Quick answer (TLDR): No, GTA 6 does not have crossplay. It launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S as a single-player game, so on day one there's no shared online world for PS5 and Xbox players to meet in. Both official store pages say it word for word: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience" (PlayStation, Xbox). Rockstar hasn't announced cross-progression (moving saves between PS5 and Xbox) either. There's no PC version dated yet. And GTA Online has gone 13 years without crossplay between consoles. If you're choosing a console, buy the one your friends play on.
Crossplay is one of the most-asked GTA 6 questions this month. People search it about 4,400 times a month in the US (Google Keyword Planner), and most of the answers out there mix up three separate things: crossplay, cross-progression and the PC version. With 26 days until launch and preload opening November 12, here's what's actually confirmed, what isn't, and what to do if you and your friends own different consoles. This guide covers:

Is GTA 6 crossplay between PS5 and Xbox?
No. At launch it can't be, because GTA 6 has no multiplayer mode to cross.
The official sources agree:
- PlayStation's GTA VI page lists "1 player", "Offline play enabled" and "Remote Play supported". In its FAQ, the answer to the multiplayer question is one sentence: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." (PlayStation)
- The Xbox Store listing uses the exact same sentence: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." (Xbox)
- Rockstar's own announcements name PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as the launch platforms for November 19, 2026. None of them mentions an online mode, crossplay or cross-progression (Rockstar Newswire).
Crossplay means a PS5 player and an Xbox player sharing the same session. A single-player game doesn't have sessions to share. So the honest answer for November 19 isn't "Rockstar turned crossplay off". It's that the feature doesn't apply to the game that's shipping.
That's also why you'll see two kinds of "no" online. Some sites say "GTA 6 doesn't have crossplay". Others say "crossplay isn't confirmed". For the launch build, both are true. For a future online mode, only the second one is. Rockstar hasn't ruled crossplay in or out for something it hasn't announced yet.
Does GTA 6 have online multiplayer at all?
Not at launch. No GTA 6 Online mode has been named, dated or shown. The only public timeline comes from outside Rockstar. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told Bloomberg on September 17, 2026: "You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer." History gives a rough idea of the gap. GTA Online arrived 14 days after GTA 5 (September 17 to October 1, 2013). Red Dead Online's beta opened 32 days after Red Dead Redemption 2 (October 26 to November 27, 2018, when Ultimate Edition early access began). If GTA 6 follows a similar pattern, crossplay only becomes a real question once that online mode exists, and Rockstar announces what platforms it connects.
Is there cross-progression or cross-save in GTA 6?
Not announced. This is the part most guides get wrong, because cross-progression is a different feature from crossplay:

In practice: if you buy GTA 6 on PS5 and later buy it again on Xbox, plan on starting over. Nothing official says a story save will carry across console families. Remote Play is sometimes mistaken for a multiplayer feature. It isn't. It just streams your own game from your PS5 to your phone, PC or PlayStation Portal. It doesn't put a second player in your world.
Does GTA Online have crossplay? (The best clue we have)
GTA Online is the closest thing to evidence, because it's Rockstar's current online game and it shows how the studio handles platforms. Its answer has been no crossplay between consoles, and no crossplay between console and PC, for 13 years (October 2013 to October 2026).
Rockstar's support pages are clear about it:
- PC is its own pool. "Cross-network play only applies to gameplay between PC platforms (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, the Xbox app on PC, etc.)" (Rockstar Support). Steam players can play with Epic players, but PC players can't play with console players.
- Progress doesn't cross console families. "Profiles cannot be migrated between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S or from PlayStation or Xbox console families to PC" (Rockstar Support, updated January 29, 2025). The one exception is a one-time move from PS4 or Xbox One up to PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.
- Even PC versions are split. When GTA 5 Enhanced arrived on PC in March 2025, Rockstar said players on the older Legacy version would be kept separate from Enhanced players, so friends need to be on the same version.
Red Dead Online works the same way: PlayStation with PlayStation, Xbox with Xbox, PC with PC.
None of this proves what a GTA 6 online mode will do. Rockstar could build it differently. But every online game Rockstar runs today keeps platforms apart, so plan for no crossplay and treat it as a bonus if it's announced. That's the safe assumption when you're spending $79.99 (Standard) or $99.99 (Ultimate) on a console version today.
Is GTA 6 crossplay with PC?
There's nothing to cross with yet. Rockstar hasn't announced a GTA 6 PC version. The only PC timing in circulation is a report pointing to early 2027, which Rockstar hasn't confirmed. Our GTA 6 PC release guide covers what's known.
If Rockstar announces a PC version, the GTA Online rules above are the best precedent. PC players play with other PC players across storefronts, and Rockstar has never let PC and console players into the same session in GTA Online.
And for the record, older consoles aren't part of the crossplay question at all. PlayStation's FAQ says "Grand Theft Auto VI will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles. Can friends on PS5 and Xbox still enjoy GTA 6 together?
Not in the same game world on November 19, but you can still share the launch:
- Play the story side by side. It's single-player, so you each play your own copy and compare runs, routes and Criminal Profiles. Nobody falls behind because of the console they own.
- Start on the same day. Both versions release on November 19, and preload opens November 12 for digital pre-orders, so a mixed-console group can be ready at the same time. Rockstar hasn't published an exact unlock time. Our preload guide has what's known.
- Party chat works across platforms through Discord. Voice apps that run outside the game don't depend on crossplay. Voice chat isn't the same as playing together, but it's how most mixed-console friend groups will spend launch night.
Which console should you buy if your friends are split?
Buy GTA 6 where your friends' GTA Online characters already are. That's the deciding factor for the future online mode.
- Most of your group plays GTA Online on PS5? Buy PS5. GTA Online profiles can't move from PS5 to Xbox Series, and that's the community you'll most likely carry into GTA 6's online mode.
- Most of your group is on Xbox Series X/S? Buy Xbox, for the same reason.
- Nobody plays online and you only want the story? Pick on price and hardware. PS5 Pro owners get the PS5 Pro Enhanced version, according to PlayStation's listing. Our PS5 vs Xbox Series X guide for GTA 6 compares them.

What would have to change for GTA 6 to get crossplay?
Watch for these signals, roughly in the order they'd appear:
- Rockstar announces a GTA 6 online mode. Until it does, crossplay doesn't apply to anything.
- The store listings change. Sony and Microsoft both tag online features on their store pages. Right now PlayStation says "1 player" and "Offline play enabled". A new online-play tag would be the first hard sign.
- Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft mentions crossplay by name. None of them has said anything about crossplay for GTA 6 so far.
- Take-Two's next earnings call. Take-Two reports its fiscal Q2 results on Monday, November 9, 2026. Executives usually take questions on GTA there, though they rarely give feature details.
