Quick answer (TLDR): No, GTA 6 will not have a full first-person mode at launch on November 19, 2026. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told Brazilian outlet Flow Games during the August 2026 Edinburgh preview that the studio focused its effort on third-person animation. First person is still in for aiming with certain weapons. Rockstar has never said first-person will never come. GTA 5 shipped without it in 2013 and added it 14 months later with the PS4/Xbox One version, so a later update or the PC version is a realistic path, though nothing about that is confirmed. The October 8 footage showing first-person driving is unverified leaked material, and Rockstar has not commented on it.
Can you play GTA 6 in first person? Players keep asking, and the answer has seemed to flip back and forth since August. One preview interview said no, a leak on October 8 seemed to say yes, and Rockstar hasn't said anything new publicly since. With 27 days until launch and preload opening November 12, here is what's actually confirmed, what's only reported, and what you should plan around. This guide covers:
- Exactly what Rockstar North said about first person, and who said it
- Which first-person views are in the game (aiming with some weapons)
- How GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 handled first person, and what that suggests for GTA 6
- The October 8 footage, and why it doesn't change the official answer
- Whether a first-person mode could arrive later, on PC or in an update
Does GTA 6 have a first-person mode?
Not a full one at launch. That's the only answer that comes from Rockstar itself.
The source is a long interview that Rob Nelson, Development Lead and co-studio head at Rockstar North, gave to Davy Jones of the Brazilian site Flow Games during the hands-off preview at the studio in Edinburgh. Flow Games published it on August 27, 2026. In Flow Games' report (translated from Portuguese), "GTA 6 will not have a complete first-person mode. The studio decided to concentrate its efforts on third-person animations, although it is possible to use a first-person perspective while aiming with certain weapons." (Flow Games)
VICE, TweakTown, Beebom and Dexerto all reported the same thing from that interview the next day. VICE summarised it as Nelson confirming that "GTA 6 will not have a full first-person mode at launch." (VICE)
Two details matter here:
- "Full" is the key word. Nelson didn't say there's no first-person camera at all. He said there's no complete mode that lets you walk, drive and play the whole campaign from Jason's or Lucia's eyes.
- "At launch" is how most outlets framed it. Spanish creator elrubius, who was at the same Edinburgh preview, said he asked Nelson about first person and was told it "hasn't been implemented yet", as relayed by GTA BOOM. That's a creator recalling a private conversation, not an official statement, but it points the same way: missing for now, not ruled out forever.
Rockstar's own channels (the GTA VI site and the Rockstar Newswire) haven't published anything on first person. They list the game as coming November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and that's it.
What can you do in first person in GTA 6?
Based on the preview reporting, here's where first person stands:
| View | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Full first-person mode (on foot, driving, whole campaign) | Not at launch | Rob Nelson via Flow Games, Aug 27, 2026 |
| First-person view when aiming certain weapons | In the game | Rob Nelson via Flow Games |
| Binoculars and similar scoped views | Reported by preview creators | GTA BOOM, from creator accounts |
| First-person driving camera | Not confirmed, only seen in unverified leaked footage | Dexerto / VideoCardz, Oct 8, 2026 |
| Default camera | Third person, over the shoulder | Every official trailer and the Extended Look |
The aiming exception makes sense. Scoped weapons need a close view to aim properly, and GTA has always switched the camera when you zoom a sniper scope. If you want the full picture of what you can carry and how the weapon wheel works, see our guide to GTA 6 weapons and the carry limit.
What you shouldn't expect on November 19: a camera toggle that turns all of GTA 6 into a first-person game the way GTA 5's next-gen version did. TweakTown also pointed out that Rockstar's Extended Look has no first-person camera scenes during gameplay. (TweakTown)
Why did Rockstar leave out first-person mode?
The reason Rockstar gave is animation priority. According to Flow Games' report, the team put its effort into third-person animation. In GTA 6 that covers a lot of new systems:
- Two playable leads who interact constantly. Jason and Lucia share a relationship stat and a bank balance, and one can drive while the other shoots (Flow Games).
- Body changes. Gym work and diet change muscle and weight, San Andreas-style.
- Weapons you can see on the body. You carry two small and two long guns, and rifles stay visible on the character.
- Lots of enterable interiors. Shops, lobbies and rooftops all need animation work (see GTA 6 interiors you can enter).
A good first-person mode isn't just moving the camera into the character's head. Hands, weapons, car interiors, doors and every interaction need their own animation from that angle, which is why GTA 5's version took a full re-release to build. It's a real cost, and Rockstar chose to spend that time on the third-person game first.
There's a reasonable counterpoint from fans: Rockstar modelled car interiors in a lot of detail, with working speedometers and gauges. GTA BOOM made the same point, asking why anyone would build that cockpit detail "for a camera you never intend to offer." That's a good argument that first person is planned eventually. It's still speculation, though, and it isn't confirmed.
How did GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 handle first person?
History is the best guide here, and it looks hopeful for first-person players.
| Game | Original launch | Full first-person mode |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 | September 17, 2013 (PS3 / Xbox 360) | Added November 18, 2014 with the PS4 / Xbox One version, about 14 months later. Also in the PC version (April 14, 2015) |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 26, 2018 | At launch |
| GTA 6 | November 19, 2026 (PS5 / Xbox Series X/S) | Not at launch, per Rob Nelson |
So GTA 6 is following the GTA 5 pattern, not the RDR2 one. GTA 5's first-person mode arrived with the next version of the game, not as a free patch to the original PS3/360 release. Fans worry the same thing could happen again. One commenter in the original r/GTA thread said they expect it to be held for a later release, "like they did with V", and others said they plan to wait for the PC version for that reason.
What did the October 8 footage show?
On October 8, 2026, roughly 25 minutes of footage attributed to a leaker known as "Cyberleek" appeared online. According to Dexerto and VideoCardz, it included driving from inside a car and walking from a first-person view.
Treat this as UNCONFIRMED. We aren't linking or describing the footage itself, and here's why it doesn't change the official answer:
- Rockstar hasn't verified it or commented on it. As of October 23, its official position is still the August preview statement.
- Development builds have tools the shipped game doesn't. As Dexerto put it, "Its presence in a leaked build, however, does not establish whether it will be available in the finished game."
- A camera existing in the code is not the same as a supported mode. Rockstar may have a first-person camera internally for testing, or for a mode it plans to finish later.
The honest reading: if the footage is authentic, it would suggest Rockstar has experimented with a first-person camera. Even then, it wouldn't tell you that the mode will be in the build you download on November 12.
Will GTA 6 get first-person mode later?
Possibly, but nothing is confirmed. These are the possible routes, based on how Rockstar has handled past games (in no particular order, since there's no evidence for which one is most likely):
- The PC version. Rockstar hasn't announced a PC date. A recent report pointed to early 2027, which Rockstar hasn't confirmed (details in our GTA 6 PC release guide). GTA 5's PC version shipped with first person, and PC releases are where Rockstar usually adds features.
- A post-launch update. It's possible, and the "not implemented yet" wording leaves room for it, but Rockstar has made no promise.
- An enhanced re-release. This is the GTA 5 route. It's the one fans complain about most, because it would mean buying the game again to get the mode.
- Mods. These are only realistic once a PC version exists, and that's when they arrived for GTA 4 and GTA 5.
If first person is a dealbreaker for you, the practical choice is between buying on console on November 19 and playing in third person, or waiting for a PC version that hasn't been announced yet. For most players, the first option makes more sense, because the third-person game is what Rockstar actually built.
Is GTA 6 still worth playing in third person?
For most players, yes. GTA has always been designed and tuned for third person, and every system Rockstar has shown is built around that camera: the new Criminal Profile, cover combat, the two-lead switching, and car chases where one character drives and the other shoots. Third person is also the only full gameplay perspective on either console at launch (aiming with certain weapons is the exception). Frame rate is a separate question, covered in our guide to GTA 6 performance mode and 60 FPS.
If you want first person right now, GTA 5 and GTA Online already have it. Press V on PC, or tap the camera button (Touchpad on PS4/PS5, View on Xbox One/Series) until you reach the first-person view. With 27 days to go, GTA Online is still the best place to play in first person while you wait. FAQ
Does GTA 6 have first-person mode? Not a full one at launch. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said during the August 2026 preview that GTA 6 won't have a complete first-person mode because the studio focused on third-person animation. First-person aiming with certain weapons is included.
Can you drive in first person in GTA 6? Not as far as Rockstar has confirmed. First-person driving only appears in unverified footage leaked on October 8, 2026, and Rockstar hasn't commented on it. Plan on a third-person driving camera on November 19.
Will GTA 6 add first-person mode in an update? Rockstar hasn't announced one. A creator at the Edinburgh preview said Nelson described it as "not implemented yet," which leaves the door open. GTA 5 added first person 14 months after launch with its PS4/Xbox One version.
Will the GTA 6 PC version have first-person mode? Unknown. Rockstar hasn't announced a GTA 6 PC release or its features. GTA 5's PC version did include first person, so many players expect it there, but that's a guess and not confirmed.
Did Red Dead Redemption 2 have first-person mode at launch? Yes. RDR2 included a full first-person mode when it launched on October 26, 2018, which is why many fans assumed GTA 6 would too.
Is GTA 6 third person only? On November 19, 2026, the default and only full camera mode is third person, over the shoulder. The one confirmed first-person exception is aiming with certain weapons.
