Quick answer (TLDR): GTA 6 reportedly needs PS5 system software 14.22.00.00 or newer, but that isn't official. The number comes from the PlayStation Game Size store tracker, and VGTimes notes that neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed it. Sony did release firmware 26.07-14.22.00 on November 2, and its only listed change is security fixes. Install it anyway. It's about 1.3 GB, and it removes the one version risk you control before the November 12 preload. Sony may ship another update before launch, so check again on November 11.
A new PS5 update landed today, 17 days before GTA 6, and the internet instantly decided the two are connected. One of those connections has evidence behind it. The other is a guess. Here's which is which, and the short list of things worth doing on your console this week.
Does GTA 6 really require PS5 update 14.22?
Reportedly yes. Officially, nobody has said so.
The claim comes from PlayStation Game Size (@PlaystationSize), an account that tracks changes to the PlayStation Store database. VGTimes reports the account now shows a 14.22.00.00 minimum for GTA 6, and the post reached r/GTA6 within hours, passing 500 upvotes. It's the same account behind the 210 GB PS5 download size, so it has a reason to be taken seriously. It's still a reading of store data, not an announcement.
Here's where each claim stands today:
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Firmware 26.07-14.22.00 exists and is live | Confirmed | Sony release notes |
| It contains security fixes | Confirmed | Sony release notes |
| GTA 6 lists 14.22.00.00 as its minimum | Reported | PlayStation Game Size, via VGTimes |
| Sony built 14.22 to protect GTA 6 | Speculation | PlayStationInfo: "timing alone is not proof" |
| 14.22 is the final minimum for launch | Unknown | IGN says Sony may ship more updates before Nov 19 |
The detail most coverage skips is that the listed minimum has already moved. On October 3, the same tracker showed 14.10. Thirty days later it shows 14.22. So don't treat 14.22 as a finish line.
What does PS5 update 14.22 actually change?
Almost nothing you can see. Sony's whole patch note for the release is one line:
"We've made some security fixes to the system software." (Sony, PS5 system software notes, version 26.07-14.22.00)
There are no new features, and IGN puts the download at 1.267 GB. It arrived 12 days after 14.20, and it applies to both PS5 and PS5 Pro.
Don't expect a GTA 6 boost from it. Sony has announced no performance improvement for the game, and PlayStationInfo found no confirmed information on that front. If you're curious about real resolution and frame rate expectations, that's a separate question, covered in our GTA 6 graphics breakdown.
Why does Sony keep patching the PS5 before GTA 6?
Sony hasn't explained it, beyond calling 14.22 a security update. The likely reason is a public jailbreak race, with GTA 6 as the biggest target in years, and that's our reading of the sequence rather than anything Sony has said.
In late September, a jailbreak supporting firmware 7.00 through 13.60 went public, covering the PS5 Pro too. IGN calls what followed "a game of Whac-A-Mole": the homebrew scene targets the newest firmware, and Sony ships another one.
| Firmware | Released | Sony's listed change |
|---|---|---|
| 26.06-14.10.00 | October 1 | Security fixes, performance and stability |
| 26.07-14.20.00 | October 21 | Messages and usability on some screens |
| 26.07-14.22.00 | November 2 | Security fixes |
The worry, as IGN frames it, is that a jailbreak on GTA 6's required firmware could open the game to piracy on PS5. If that's the motive, it would explain why a minimum version matters so much this close to launch.
Regular players barely feel this. In the r/GTA6 thread, most people weren't surprised at all. The common view was that public bragging about exploits only speeds up Sony's patches, and a few pointed to Sony's bug bounty, which recently paid out $50,000 for a reported exploit.
Can you preload GTA 6 on older PS5 firmware?
Nobody outside Sony and Rockstar knows yet, so assume no.
The tracker data speaks to running the game, not downloading it. Two earlier cases show how these gates behave in practice. IGN reports that some PS5 games required 14.00 just to download updates. And specialist reporting summarized by Yahoo Tech says consoles left on 14.00 were refused PSN access, including the PlayStation Store, until they installed 14.10.
If that pattern holds, an out-of-date console could hit a wall on November 12, which is the worst possible moment to discover it. Rockstar says preload opens at local midnight, and a 210 GB download is already a long job without a firmware prompt in the way.
That also applies to boxed buyers. The physical GTA 6 box contains a download code, not a disc, so there's no offline route around any of this.
Which PS5 owners should actually worry?
Most won't need to think about this. If your console is online and has automatic updates on, 14.22 will arrive by itself, and Sony's notes give you no reason to delay it.
The real risk sits with a smaller group:
- The second console. A PS5 in a spare room or at a parent's house may have missed several updates.
- The GTA 6 purchase. If you've bought a PS5 for this game, expect it to need updating out of the box, because stock can sit on older firmware. Do that before November 12, not on launch night.
- Automatic updates off. You'll get no silent fix, so check by hand.
- Rarely online consoles. Anyone with limited internet should plan the 1.3 GB update and the far larger preload together.
- Homebrew users. Anyone holding old firmware on purpose has a real decision to make, covered below.
What should you do on your PS5 before November 12?
Five things, in this order. All the settings paths below come from Sony's own support pages.
- Check your version. Go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony's guide says you're current if "Up to date" appears under the version number.
- Turn on automatic system updates. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then turn on Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically. That's Sony's documented path, and it covers you if Sony ships another patch next week.
- Keep the console online in rest mode. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Without this, rest mode won't fetch anything.
- Clear the space. The reported PS5 download is 210 GB, so we recommend clearing about 250 GB by November 12. Rockstar hasn't published an official size.
- Decide on your pre-order first. This is the trap. Under normal PS Store rules, a digital pre-order can't be cancelled for a change of mind once the main game starts downloading, and that includes preloading. Faulty content and local consumer rights are separate. Sony says a pre-order with auto-downloads set up starts downloading as soon as it's available. If you're still unsure, open Game Library, select your GTA 6 pre-order, select the countdown timer, and clear the checkbox for the game before selecting OK. Note that reviews are reported for November 18, six days after preload opens.
Then do one last check of Console Information on November 11. It takes 30 seconds and catches any late update.
What if the PS5 update won't install?
Sony documents two fixes on its system software page.
If the download is stuck: press the PS button, open Downloads/Uploads in the control center, highlight the system software update, then select View Error Info and Try Again.
If it keeps failing: use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Create a folder named PS5, put a folder named UPDATE inside it, and save Sony's file there as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Then start the console in Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep, and choose Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device. Folder and file names must be in uppercase.
Get that file only from Sony's own page. Treat any site offering a "GTA 6 firmware" download as a scam, the same family as the fake early access pages we covered last week.
Should you stay on old firmware to keep a jailbreak?
Not if you want to play GTA 6 on that console. Those two goals now pull in opposite directions.
A PS5 held at 13.60 or below for homebrew would need updating if the reported requirement stands, and PlayStationInfo notes that Sony offers no rollback. Yahoo Tech says the same: Sony's documentation gives ordinary users no downgrade path. So the update is one-way.
For everyone else, PlayStationInfo's verdict is the right one: there's no known reason to avoid this update.
Does GTA 6 need an Xbox update too?
We found no equivalent report. The firmware story is PS5-specific, and the jailbreak race driving it is about PlayStation. Rockstar hasn't published a minimum Xbox version either, and Xbox Series S owners have bigger concerns in storage. Keep your console's updates on and you're covered.
What happens next?
Expect more firmware. IGN says Sony may release further security updates before November 19, and the run from 14.10 to 14.22 in about a month shows how quickly they've been coming. Two dates matter:
- November 9: Take-Two's earnings call, the next time management talks about the Nov 19 date.
- November 12: Preload opens. That's when anyone on old firmware finds out how strict the store really is.
We'll update this page if Sony or Rockstar publishes a real minimum, or if the tracker's number moves again.
Waiting for November 19? GTA 6 has no timesaver.gg service, but GTA Online is live now if you want to stay busy until launch.

FAQ
Does GTA 6 require PS5 update 14.22? Reportedly. The PlayStation Game Size tracker lists 14.22.00.00 as the minimum, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed it, and the number may rise before launch.
Is PS5 update 14.22 mandatory? PlayStationInfo reported that it wasn't yet mandatory for all users on release day, but that could change. Consoles left on 14.00 were reportedly later refused PSN access until they updated.
Will PS5 update 14.22 improve GTA 6 performance? There's no sign of that. Sony lists security fixes only, with no mention of game performance.
How big is PS5 update 14.22? IGN reports 1.267 GB. Sony's USB method asks for roughly 1.1 GB of free space on the drive, so use a slightly larger stick to be safe.
Can I downgrade my PS5 after updating? No. Sony offers no official way back to older firmware.
Do I need the update on PS5 Pro too? Yes. Firmware 14.22 applies to both PS5 and PS5 Pro. If you're still choosing a console, the firmware makes no difference between them.
