Quick answer (TLDR): A GTA 6 graphics downgrade isn't proven. Rockstar's October 15 launch trailer does look softer and hazier than earlier footage, but Notebookcheck's summary of Digital Foundry's analysis says the game still appears to render at 1440p, upscale to 4K and run at 30 FPS on PS5. The real weakness is image clarity, not detail. Rockstar hasn't published a resolution or graphics modes for any console, and we found no Rockstar footage labelled as captured on PS5 Pro or Xbox.
You've seen the side-by-sides. One says GTA 6 got worse, the next says it's the best-looking game ever made. Both camps are arguing over a 90-second trailer. Here's what the footage actually supports, using Rockstar's own statements and the most detailed technical analysis available, 17 days before the November 19 launch.
Did GTA 6's graphics get downgraded?
Not on the evidence so far. The launch trailer looks different, and Digital Foundry agrees it does. What it didn't find is a drop in resolution or frame rate.
When the trailer landed on October 15, players called it blurry, hazy and washed out. Notebookcheck's report on the Digital Foundry breakdown covers both sides. The softer look and heavy bloom are real, but they may be specific to this particular footage. The rendering numbers didn't move: still around 1440p before the upscale to 4K, still 30 FPS.
The likely causes are less dramatic than a downgrade:
- Different scenes. On r/GTA6, players pointed out that weather and time of day already change how sharp Red Dead Redemption 2 looks, so one trailer can't settle it.
- A cinematic grade. Another r/GTA6 thread argued the soft look is a stylistic choice for a trailer that also runs as an advert. That's a theory, not something Rockstar has said.
- HDR handling. Digital Foundry raised concerns about the HDR presentation, and former Remedy developer Filippo Tarpini suspects AgX tone mapping may be distorting colours, according to Notebookcheck.
Digital Foundry also added a caveat that cuts the other way. It said "the cinematic shots used here just might have been selected to avoid the aliasing and image quality issues that were more prominent in the Extended Look trailer" (launch trailer analysis). So this trailer is a weak test in either direction.
What resolution and frame rate does GTA 6 run at?
Rockstar hasn't said. These are estimates from footage, not official specs.
Rockstar describes its August showcase, on its official GTA VI site, as "Captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5." That makes it the best public evidence we have. Digital Foundry and others treat it as base PS5 footage, although the wording doesn't name a model.
| Measure | What was found | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal resolution | Native 2560x1440, "or something very close to it" | Digital Foundry pixel counts | Estimated from footage |
| Output | 4K, using a spatial upscale | Digital Foundry | Estimated from footage |
| Frame rate | 30 FPS | Digital Foundry scan of all 48,242 frames | Measured in a 30 FPS video |
| Launch trailer | Still around 1440p upscaled to 4K | Digital Foundry, via Notebookcheck | Estimated from footage |
| PS5 AI upscaling (QSSR) | "Not clear one way or another", leaning towards not used | Digital Foundry | Open |
| Graphics modes | Not announced | Rockstar | Unknown |
The frame rate result is better than the number sounds. Digital Foundry found "a closer, tighter lock to 30fps than any of its predecessors" (60 FPS analysis). The launch trailer also appears to fix animation pacing errors that made camera moves look jerky in earlier footage, though it's a small sample.
Whether a 60 FPS option arrives is a separate question, covered in our GTA 6 60 FPS guide.
Where do the graphics actually fall short?
Image clarity is the honest weak spot. It's also the one that people mix up with a downgrade.
Digital Foundry's verdict on the Extended Look was blunt about this:
"However, the output does not cohere into a sharp 4K presentation, and there is no strong evidence of modern temporal upscalers such as FSR 2 or TAA upscaling being used. Instead, the image reads very much like a relatively straightforward spatial upscale from 1440p to 4K, bringing with it a degree of softness, visible geometric aliasing and shimmer on fine details." (Digital Foundry, Extended Look analysis)
That softness was there in August, two months before anyone started calling the launch trailer a downgrade. Rockstar's trade-off looks deliberate. Digital Foundry says the priority was "maximising the level of visual detail at a fixed 30fps frame-rate on all platforms", with costs "landing primarily in image quality and animation smoothness rather than systemic scale or fidelity."
There's one possible fix. Sony announced QSSR on October 1, a faster form of AI upscaling for the base PS5, starting with Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. Neither Rockstar nor Sony has said GTA 6 will use it. Don't count on it for launch.
Does GTA 6 have ray tracing?
Yes on the evidence, even though Rockstar hasn't released a feature list. Digital Foundry identified "ray-traced reflections and global illumination (with perhaps a hint of selective RT shadows), alongside the most phenomenal hair rendering we've seen" in the PS5 footage.
Here's what each part means in the game:
- Reflections: Things outside the camera's view can still show up in reflective surfaces, which older screen-space techniques can't do. Some household mirrors appear to use the older planar method instead.
- Global illumination: Light bounces off surfaces and picks up their colour. Digital Foundry calls this "arguably where RT is most indispensable", because a changing open world is hard to light with baked data.
- Shadows: Most still use refined shadow maps, not ray tracing. Close-up cutscene shots may use limited RT shadows.
- The cost: Digital Foundry's review of the footage noted RT noise and reflections that lose quality as the camera moves.
Whether all of this carries over unchanged to every console is the open question. Ray tracing is the kind of feature that often gets scaled back on weaker hardware, and we found no Rockstar footage from Xbox yet.
How do GTA 6 graphics compare to GTA 5?
The gap is biggest in characters and materials, not raw ray tracing. That surprises people, because GTA 5 Enhanced on PC already has ray-traced effects.
Digital Foundry's comparison with a maxed-out GTA 5 Enhanced found:
| Area | GTA 5 Enhanced | GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Materials | Can look "rather uniform" | Modern physically based materials, so dusty cars and rough concrete react accurately to light |
| Ray tracing | Added to an older game | Built in from the start |
| Characters | Older shading | Better skin and hair, even in tough lighting |
Ray tracing can only do so much on assets from a 2013 game. That's the main reason GTA 6 looks a generation newer. For the gameplay side, see our GTA 6 vs GTA 5 breakdown.
Are the GTA 6 screenshots real console graphics?
Don't assume so. Treat promotional stills as a best case.
When Rockstar released 63 screenshots in June, Digital Foundry wrote: "we find it unlikely that these are real-time results on PS5, Xbox Series X - or in the best case on console, PS5 Pro." Rockstar hasn't said what hardware produced them.
That matters for comparison posts. A sharp 4K still set beside a compressed trailer frame will always look like a downgrade. The images in this article come from Rockstar's official screenshot pack, so they carry the same caveat. For real console image quality, use the video that Rockstar says was captured on PS5.
Which console will have the best GTA 6 graphics?
PS5 Pro is the only version with an official upgrade promise, but nobody outside Rockstar has shown what it does.
| Version | Graphics status on November 2 |
|---|---|
| PS5 | About 1440p and 30 FPS, estimated from Rockstar's footage |
| PS5 Pro | Labelled PS5 Pro Enhanced; we found no Rockstar footage labelled as Pro |
| Xbox Series X | Launch platform; resolution not announced, and we found no Rockstar footage labelled as Xbox |
| Xbox Series S | Launch platform; resolution not announced |
| PC | No version announced |
Sony's store page carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label. The Shortcut quoted the listing as promising "improved performance, more stable frame rates (FPS) and even sharper resolutions on the most powerful console on the market." Sharper resolution would target exactly the softness described above, but the size of the gain is unknown. Our PS5 Pro verdict covers whether that's worth paying for.
Digital Foundry's expectation is "all but identical on base PS5/Xbox Series X, with Series S bringing up the rear and PS5 Pro sitting on top." That's a prediction, not a measurement. Series S owners should read our Series S guide.
Will GTA 6 have graphics modes?
Unknown. Rockstar hasn't announced Fidelity, Performance or any other mode.
Notebookcheck reported on October 28 that leaked material points to a planned performance mode, with 40 to 60 FPS floated as possible. That's unconfirmed, and it may not be there on day one. Separately, Digital Foundry says that according to reports from people who spoke to Rockstar, higher frame rate modes will be considered for post-launch updates. Neither is a promise.
What should you do before November 19?
Two things are worth doing now, and two aren't:
- Clear storage. Graphics won't matter if you can't install it. Check our GTA 6 file size guide before the November 12 preload.
- Check your TV. Turn on game mode and test HDR on a game you know well. A bad TV setup can add its own haze, and that's easy to blame on the game.
- Don't buy new hardware for graphics yet. PS5 Pro image quality is unproven. If reviews arrive on the reported November 18 date, you'll know more before launch.
- Don't trust "confirmed 4K" headlines. No resolution has been announced for any console. The 1440p figure comes from Digital Foundry's analysis.
What can you do in GTA Online while you wait?
There's no GTA 6 service at timesaver.gg, and we won't pretend otherwise. But GTA Online on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S is a good way to spend the 17 days until launch, and our pre-GTA 6 unlock list shows what's worth finishing first.
