Quick answer (TLDR): GTA 6's story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple trying to give their relationship another shot. When "an easy score goes wrong", they land in "a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida". Edge reported on October 29 that quitting crime is a core theme. Your Criminal Profile and a four-point closeness scale shape how the story plays out. Rockstar hasn't revealed the ending, the villain or how many endings there are.
Rockstar has guarded the plot for nearly three years. Then on October 29, three weeks before the November 19 launch, Edge's cover feature handed over the most useful story details so far, including Rob Nelson's line about the couple wanting "another shot".
This guide keeps to material from Rockstar and on-record interviews: the official site, the trailers, the Extended Look and Edge's reporting. Nothing here comes from the 2022 hack or the Cyberleek footage. It does cover scenes from official footage, so skip the Extended Look section if you want to go in cold.
What is the story of GTA 6?
Rockstar's official summary is one paragraph, and everything else builds on it:
"Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive." — Rockstar Games, official GTA VI site
Three things in that paragraph are fixed. There are two leads. A job goes wrong. And the fallout is a conspiracy that spreads statewide, well beyond Vice City.
Rockstar didn't start from that premise, either. Edge says the studio's early work focused on the place, and it held back on committing to its Bonnie-and-Clyde-style story until Red Dead Redemption 2 was finished.
Who are Jason and Lucia before the story starts?
Rockstar's official bios give each of them a clear backstory and a clear want.
| Jason Duval | Lucia Caminos | |
|---|---|---|
| Grew up | "around grifters and crooks" | Her father taught her to fight "as soon as she could walk" |
| Past | "a stint in the Army", then the Keys | "Fighting for her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary" |
| Now | "working for local drug runners" | Out of prison, and "sheer luck got her out" |
| Wants | "an easy life" | "the good life her mom has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City" |
The October 15 Launch Trailer fills in Jason's side. Its first spoken lines are about why he can't go straight:
"I got in some trouble in the Army. Didn't leave on the best of terms. They don't give loans or anything to people like me." — Jason Duval, Grand Theft Auto VI Launch Trailer
Then a voice cuts in: "This is a free call from Lucia Caminos." The trailer doesn't explain the call, but it is the moment that connects them on screen. Neither Rockstar nor the trailer has said what Jason did in the Army or what exactly Lucia did to end up in prison.

Were Jason and Lucia together before the game?
Very likely yes, though nobody has spelled out the details. This is the new part. In Edge's feature, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said:
"We start them wanting to be together, and wanting to give this relationship of theirs another shot. But, as the game progresses, it's yours to keep or yours to lose." — Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to Edge (October 29, 2026)
"Another shot" points to a history, and Edge itself says the pair are bound by "an emotional history as well as a professional one". An r/GTA6 thread goes further and calls them ex-lovers. It's a fair reading, but "ex-lovers" is the community's phrase, not Rockstar's. Commenters there read the reunion as tentative rather than cold, and some think the pair met years ago. That part is theory.
Why do Jason and Lucia want out of crime?
Edge's clearest story claim is this one: "Quitting crime is, however, a fundamental theme of the authored storyline." It frames this as a break from earlier GTA games, where the goal was simply to pile up wealth, cars and status.
Nelson's version is short:
"These games, maybe some people think, 'Oh, they're power fantasies'. Sure. But what if these characters want something else?" — Rob Nelson, to Edge
He points to Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur Morgan's money raised a question of "selfishness versus selflessness". Edge's summary for GTA 6 is that the question becomes what kind of life you're trying to build. Jason and Lucia are still professional thieves, though. Wanting out doesn't mean getting out, and Rockstar hasn't said whether they make it.
What goes wrong in the GTA 6 story?
Rockstar hasn't said which job is the "easy score". The 26-minute Extended Look (August 27) is the best evidence so far, but Mashable cautions that it doesn't reveal the complete plot or necessarily show scenes in chronological order. Taken in the order shown:
- A pickup goes bad. Working for Vice City businessman Boobie Ike, the couple go to a rundown building to find a man named Raymond. A caller named Ernesto warns that a task force is on the way.
- The raid. Police storm the building and open fire instead of making arrests. Lucia asks if one of the officers was Méndez (some outlets spell it Menendez), so the couple may already have a history with him.
- They look for help. At a rooftop bar they meet Brian and Lori Heder, and the conversation shows the couple needs an introduction to someone who can help.
- The test. They end up on a job with Raul Bautista, who Rockstar calls "a seasoned bank robber always on the hunt for talent". The job turns into a huge police chase through Vice City.
- The step up. They then work private security for Andrés de León at the opening of Megamundo's first American headquarters, where masked gunmen attack the party and split the couple up.
Mashable's read is the sensible one: a failed pickup sends them looking for help, and that help pulls them into bigger, more dangerous jobs. Whether Megamundo sits at the center of the conspiracy is unconfirmed. The Launch Trailer also shows a vault with banknotes in the air, but Rockstar hasn't said which mission that shot belongs to.
Can your choices change the GTA 6 story?
Partly, within limits. Edge names two systems, and the limits are as clear as the features:
- Criminal Profile. It tracks behavior from "Professional" to "Irredeemable", shown with angel and devil icons. (Earlier previews reported "Psycho" as the top label, so the final wording may differ.) Edge reports that "Rockstar says that your Criminal Profile will influence how Jason and Lucia's story unfolds." Our Criminal Profile guide covers how the system works.
- Closeness. The relationship runs on a four-point scale that usually rises with time spent together: beach walks, cycling, the gym or just driving around.
- The limit. Edge is direct: "You can choose what kind of criminal you are, but not whether you are one." The couple also can't fully walk away from each other.
- Marriage. Nelson "refuses to confirm or deny" whether they can marry.
Nelson also told The New York Times that his roughly 80-hour run included "optional goals with narrative ramifications", so some side content feeds into the story too.
How is the GTA 6 story structured?
Three things are known about the way the story plays:
- Two leads, one switch. You can swap between Jason and Lucia "whenever the narrative allows", per Edge. It isn't a free swap at every moment.
- Chapters. Rockstar Support says the Ultimate Edition's 16 items are "threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter". Rockstar hasn't said how many chapters there are.
- Forced breathers. Edge reports "some natural gating" between missions. Sometimes you must raise cash for the next job by robbing a store or stealing a car wanted by a fence, so you can't sprint straight through.
The campaign is single-player. The PlayStation listing says 1 player, and there's no co-op story. Multiplayer is its own question, covered in our GTA 6 Online guide.

What should you do before the story starts?
Preload opens November 12 and the game unlocks November 19. Our preload guide has the timing. If you want the story cold, stop watching footage now. Clips from the Cyberleek leaks are still circulating, and they aren't official.
Beyond the game itself, there's nothing to buy for GTA 6 yet, and no GTA 6 service exists on timesaver.gg. Anyone selling GTA 6 money or accounts before launch is lying.
