How to Counter Electro Giant in Clash Royale (October 2026, Season 88)

Electro Giant has spent most of its life as the card nobody respected — a slow, 7-Elixir tank that shuffled toward your tower and usually died on the way. Season 88 "Shocktober" changed the conversation. With the Evolution Electro Giant now live and players pairing the base card with Lightning and Tornado, the ladder is full of posts that boil down to one question: how do you actually counter this thing without burning your whole hand? This guide gives you the answer that a live-stats table can't — the reasoning behind each counter, placement by placement, plus the two spells that turn an easy defense into a lost tower.

Everything below is at Tournament Standard (Level 11) unless noted. The October 6, 2026 balance update did not touch Electro Giant — so the card behaves exactly as it has, and the counters here are current.

Quick answer: what is the best counter to Electro Giant in Clash Royale?

The cleanest counter to Electro Giant is a high-DPS building placed OUT of its stun radius — Inferno Tower is the gold standard, placed next to your King Tower so the Giant dies before it reaches your tower. Electro Giant stuns and damages anything that melees it within roughly a 3-tile radius, so melee swarms (Skeleton Army, Barbarians) get shocked and chewed up. Buildings, ranged troops, and a dedicated tank-killer like P.E.K.K.A bypass that stun. The real danger is never the Giant alone — it is Electro Giant + Lightning (which resets your Inferno) or Electro Giant + Tornado (which drags your building into the stun). Plan for the spell, not just the tank.

Keep that frame in mind for the rest of the guide: you are not fighting a 7-Elixir tank, you are fighting the push built around it.

How Electro Giant actually works (the part that decides every counter)

Electro Giant is an Epic card unlocked from Arena 13 (Rascal's Hideout). It is a slow, single-target, building-targeting ground troop with very high hitpoints and moderate damage. The mechanic that matters for defending is this:

Any enemy unit that damages Electro Giant while within about a 3-tile radius is itself damaged and stunned for 0.5 seconds on each hit. (Source: Clash Royale Wiki, Electro Giant.)

That single rule explains why half the "obvious" counters fail:

  • Melee swarms get punished. Skeleton Army, Barbarians, Goblins — they walk into the radius, start hitting, and get stunned and zapped back. At Tournament Standard a full Skeleton Army deals only about 1,005 damage to Electro Giant — well under a third of his hitpoints — before it melts. It is a stall, not a kill.
  • Buildings are immune to the stun. A Cannon, Tesla, or Inferno Tower is a structure, so the retaliation zap does nothing to it. The Giant just walks up and attacks it, buying you the whole lifetime of that building.
  • Ranged units are safe if kept back. Musketeer, Electro Wizard, Dart Goblin and friends can plink the Giant from outside the radius, as long as the opponent doesn't drop support that pulls them in.

Since the 2026-08-26 patch, every Hero and Champion ability is single-use per deployment (Boss Bandit excepted) — relevant because a lot of Electro Giant pushes are now fronted by a Hero or Champion, and you only have to respect that ability once, not on a repeating cooldown.

The Evolution raises the stakes

The Evolution Electro Giant, live with Season 88, adds a "Zap Pack" that charges over a few cycles and then releases a shockwave which de-levels enemy troops and buildings in range — Supercell describes it as Royal Chef's buff mechanic in reverse. For defending, the takeaway is simple: against the Evo, your defenders arrive slightly weaker than their card level suggests, so lean even harder on buildings and spells (which the de-level can't meaningfully undress) and away from fragile troop walls. We break the Evolution down card-for-card in our Evolution Electro Giant guide.

The best Electro Giant counters, ranked

1. Inferno Tower — the premium answer

Clash Royale Inferno Tower card render — the number-one building counter to Electro Giant

Nothing deletes a lone tank faster than an Inferno Tower. Its ramping damage shreds Electro Giant's huge health bar, and because it is a building the stun never touches it.

Placement is everything. Put the Inferno Tower directly in front of (or beside) your King Tower, not out at the bridge. Placed deep, the Giant has to walk the full distance to reach it, giving the Inferno time to ramp and kill it before it ever touches your Princess Tower. Placed too far forward, you give the opponent room to kill the Inferno with a spell or pull it with a troop and let the Giant through.

Its weakness is Lightning — see the spells section below.

2. Inferno Dragon — same damage, needs discipline

Inferno Dragon kills Electro Giant with the same ramping burn, but it is squishier and, critically, it will get stunned if you fly it into the 3-tile radius. Drop it on top of the Giant in a panic and it gets obliterated. Placed a little behind, outside the stun radius, and paired with a cheap ground distraction to hold the Giant's attention, the Inferno Dragon burns it down cleanly. It is the better pick in decks that can't spare a building slot.

3. P.E.K.K.A — the tank-killer that ignores the gimmick

P.E.K.K.A trades blow-for-blow and, as a high-HP single-target monster, she eats the retaliation stun without caring. She is the counter players reach for when they don't run a building, and she flips defense into a brutal counter-push. The catch: if the opponent stalls to double (3x) Elixir and mirrors the Giant, even P.E.K.K.A can get overwhelmed — more on that in the FAQ.

4. Defensive buildings: Cannon, Tesla, Bomb Tower

If you don't own an Inferno, a plain Cannon or Tesla still does the job of a cheap pull-and-tank: they survive the stun, redirect the Giant away from your tower, and run its clock down for only 3–4 Elixir. They won't kill a healthy Electro Giant alone, but paired with any chip damage they neutralize the push for a big Elixir profit. Tesla hides underground between activations, dodging the opponent's spell.

5. Ranged support from behind

Musketeer, Electro Wizard, Flying Machine, Dart Goblin — all fine secondary damage as long as you keep them behind your tower and out of the radius. They are never your whole answer, but they stack on top of a building to speed up the kill.

The two spells that beat your counter: Lightning and Tornado

Clash Royale Lightning spell card render — the spell that resets Inferno defenses against Electro Giant

Here is the thing the ladder keeps relearning: Electro Giant is fair; Electro Giant plus a spell is not. The most-complained-about pairing right now is Electro Giant and Lightning, and it is a real interaction, not just salt.

  • Lightning resets and can destroy your Inferno Tower, stripping away your single best counter and letting the Giant walk free. Counterplay: don't commit the Inferno the instant the Giant crosses the bridge — if you bait the Lightning first, or have a backup DPS troop, you survive the reset. Consider a cheaper building the opponent won't want to spend 6 Elixir of Lightning on.
  • Tornado is the pairing competitive players flag as the Electro Giant user's best tool, described in community counter guides as the defender's "worst fear": it drags your defending troops INTO the stun radius and can pull them off the Giant entirely, or activate your King Tower against you at the wrong moment. Counterplay: defend with buildings and spells, which Tornado can't yank out of position, instead of a troop pile the Tornado can scramble.

The Lava Hound buff in the October 6 patch (damage 53 → 71) does not change Electro Giant, but it is a reminder that the win-condition meta shifted this patch — keep your defensive building flexible enough to answer both air beatdown and the Electro Giant ground push.

What NOT to use against Electro Giant

  • Skeleton Army / Goblin Gang alone — eaten by the stun, barely dents the health bar.
  • Inferno Dragon placed on top of the Giant — stunned and deleted.
  • A lone ranged troop at the bridge — it gets pulled or out-ranged by support and never kills the tank in time.
  • Nothing — do not "let the first one through." The danger is the second Electro Giant, and if the first one connects you are already behind on tower health.

FAQ

What is the single best counter to Electro Giant in Clash Royale? An Inferno Tower placed deep next to your King Tower. Its ramping damage shreds the Giant's large health pool, and because it is a building it is immune to the retaliation stun. The only real threat to it is Lightning, so bait or play around that spell before committing the Inferno.

Why do my Skeletons and Barbarians die to Electro Giant? Because Electro Giant stuns and damages any troop that melees it within roughly a 3-tile radius. Swarms walk straight into that zone, get shocked back, and deal very little before dying — a full Skeleton Army does only about 1,005 damage at Tournament Standard, less than a third of the Giant's health. Use a building or a tank-killer instead; swarms can only stall.

How do I counter Electro Giant with Lightning? You don't counter the Giant with Lightning — Lightning is what the Electro Giant user casts to reset or destroy your Inferno Tower. Your counterplay is to not throw the Inferno down the instant the Giant appears. Bait the Lightning with a cheaper building first, or keep a backup DPS troop (Inferno Dragon, P.E.K.K.A) so losing the Inferno doesn't lose you the tower.

Why is Electro Giant with Tornado so hard to defend? Tornado pulls your defending troops into the Giant's stun radius, scrambling your defense or even activating your own King Tower at a bad time. Defend with buildings and spells, which Tornado cannot reposition, rather than a pile of troops it can drag around.

How do I stop a mirrored (double) Electro Giant? The first Electro Giant is rarely the problem — the mirrored second one, often with a Champion sandwiched between, is what breaks decks, because most counter cards die to the first push. You need either double buildings, or a fast cycle that can re-draw a high-HP tank-killer like P.E.K.K.A by the time the opponent spends the ~19 Elixir to deploy Giant + Champion + Giant. Cycle efficiently on the first wave so your answer is ready for the second.

Did the October 2026 balance update change Electro Giant? No. The October 6, 2026 balance update left Electro Giant untouched. It nerfed Minion Giant, Royal Ghost, Barbarian Barrel, Hero Ice Wizard's freeze and others, and buffed Lava Hound, Wall Breakers, X-Bow, Ram Rider, Three Musketeers and Goblin Barrel. So every counter in this guide is current for Season 88.
