Quick answer: Yes. The weapon levels, attachment unlocks and Player XP you earn in Modern Warfare 4's DMZ Early Access (starting October 20, 2026) count toward your Multiplayer progression once the full game launches on October 23. Activision's own DMZ intel calls weapon progression "a global system", and DMZ XP feeds the standard 1–55 Player Progression too. What doesn't cross over is weapon access: a gun you unlock in DMZ through a Weapon Manual isn't unlocked for Multiplayer, and the reverse is also true. Your campaign reward tokens can't help either, because those rewards only activate at full launch.

TL;DR
- Weapon levels: shared. "This is a global system, so any Progression you achieve across Multiplayer and DMZ is counted" (callofduty.com DMZ Deep Dive, Part 2).
- Player rank: one-way. DMZ XP goes toward your 1–55 Player Progression, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP does not raise your 1–70 DMZ Level.
- Failed exfil? You keep the XP. Activision says DMZ XP from a deployment still counts even if you die before extracting.
- The head start is about 3 days. DMZ Early Access opens Tuesday, October 20. Multiplayer opens for everyone on Friday, October 23.
- Not shared: weapon access. DMZ unlocks guns with Weapon Manuals you have to extract with. Those are separate from Multiplayer unlocks in both directions.
- By the numbers: the example M4 has 72 weapon levels, the DMZ Gunsmith's buy list covers 32 launch weapons across 8 classes, and a base M4 costs about 5,000 DMZ Cash there.
DMZ Early Access is the last stage before launch. Campaign Early Access went live on October 16, and the full game unlocks on October 23 (our unlock schedule breakdown has every wave). Activision's October 9 DMZ deep dive settled whether those three days count toward Multiplayer. They do, which makes October 20–22 the only time anyone can level MW4 weapons before Multiplayer opens.
What carries over from MW4 DMZ Early Access to Multiplayer?
Here's the official picture. Everything marked Confirmed comes straight from Activision's FOB Intel Guide, published October 9, 2026:
| Progress type | Carries DMZ → Multiplayer? | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon levels (per gun) | ✅ Yes, one global track | Confirmed (Activision) |
| Attachment unlocks / Shared Attachments | ✅ Yes, unlocked once for every compatible gun | Confirmed (Activision) |
| Apex Attachment (after max weapon level, where supported) | ✅ Yes, it sits at the end of the shared track | Confirmed (Activision) |
| Player XP → 1–55 Player Progression | ✅ Yes, DMZ XP "also contributes" | Confirmed (Activision) |
| Multiplayer/Warzone XP → DMZ Level | ❌ No | Confirmed (Activision) |
| Weapon access (Weapon Manuals) | ❌ No, in either direction | Confirmed by Activision for DMZ; Multiplayer side per Infinity Ward AMA |
| DMZ Level 1–70, FOB upgrades, Operator Traits | 🔒 Stays in DMZ | Confirmed (Activision) |
| Camo progress on the weapon track | ✅ Shown on the shared weapon track | Activision shows camos on the track; Infinity Ward says the full camo grind works in Early Access |
The weapon line is the one that matters. In Activision's words, the DMZ Gunsmith "works similarly to Multiplayer: level up specific weapons to unlock attachments along their progression tracks, weapon progression counts across both MP and DMZ." Its screenshot above shows a DMZ M4 at level 10 of 72. That's the same 72-level track you'll be on when you load into Multiplayer on the 23rd.
Does DMZ XP count toward your Multiplayer rank (1–55)?
Yes, but only in one direction. DMZ has its own Level 1–70 track, which unlocks FOB stations, 3D Printer recipes, Stash slots and other DMZ rewards. The blog is explicit about how the two tracks interact:
"XP earned in the 1-70 DMZ Player Progression also contributes to your overall 1-55 Player Progression, but XP earned in Multiplayer or Call of Duty: Warzone does not contribute to your DMZ Level. Even if you fail to exfil, the DMZ XP earned during your deployment still counts toward your progress." — Activision, DMZ Deep Dive, Part 2 (callofduty.com)
So every Story Mission, Dynamic Op and Side Op you run from October 20 also moves your main Soldier Rank toward the Level 55 Prestige gate. Activision's progression graphic also notes that Double XP Tokens speed up DMZ Player XP. (For how Prestige works once you reach 55, see our MW4 Prestige & leveling explainer.)
The "keep XP on a failed exfil" rule matters more than it sounds. Loot and gear are on the line in every DMZ run, but progress isn't. A bad deployment still levels your gun and your rank. (Operator Dog Tag levels and Trait Points are different: those come from successful exfils.) Our DMZ progression guide covers the gear-loss side in detail.
Can you grind camos in MW4 DMZ Early Access?
Mostly yes, and here it helps to separate what's officially confirmed from what developers have said.
- Confirmed by Activision: a weapon's Progression menu in DMZ shows "any Attachment unlocks and Weapon Camos available at each level," and that track is global. Camos tied to weapon levels advance in DMZ the same way they do in Multiplayer.
- Stated by Infinity Ward (not a patch note): in its October 9 r/DMZ AMA, the studio said the full camo grind would be accessible and progressible in DMZ Early Access, as summarized by GamerFuzion. Pre-launch answers can still change, so check your first challenge in-game before planning a full grind around it.
- Mode Mastery Camos are separate per mode. MW4 has nine Mastery Camos, three per mode. Multiplayer has Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged, and DMZ has Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio (details in our DMZ Mastery Camos guide). Early DMZ grinding gives you a head start on the shared weapon track. It won't finish the Multiplayer-specific mastery challenges for you.
The practical takeaway: DMZ Early Access is a real head start on weapon levels and attachments, which are the slowest part of the launch-week camo chase. The Multiplayer mastery tiers themselves still wait for October 23 (our MW4 mastery camo guide breaks down that grind).
What does NOT carry over from DMZ to Multiplayer?
Three things stay put:
- Weapon access. You can still use any gun you loot or keep in your Stash. To buy a base weapon in the DMZ Gunsmith, though, you first have to "locate the Weapon Manual for that weapon, and extract with it." Infinity Ward's AMA answers say the wall goes both ways: a Manual extracted in DMZ doesn't unlock that gun in Multiplayer, and a Multiplayer unlock doesn't make it buyable in DMZ. The levels are shared, but the right to use the gun isn't.
- Your DMZ-only economy. DMZ Cash, Stash contents, the 3D Printer, FOB station upgrades and your 1–70 DMZ Level rewards all stay in DMZ.
- Operator Traits and DMZ Prestige. Each Active Duty Operator can earn up to 18 Trait Points and up to three Permanent Prestige Traits. That system is "separate from the standard Level 1–55 Player Progression," per Activision. The full breakdown is in our FOB stations & Level 70 guide.
One more catch for anyone who finished the campaign early: Activision says the 16 campaign rewards, including 3 Double XP Tokens and 2 Double Weapon XP Tokens, become "available for use in Multiplayer and DMZ upon the full game launch." That means those tokens can't speed up your October 20–22 DMZ sessions. (The full list is in our campaign rewards guide.)

Is the 3-day DMZ head start "pay to level"? What players are saying
The carry-over news set off a predictable argument. In a recent r/modernwarfare4 thread, one player said it felt unfair that pre-order owners could raise their main combat level three days before everyone else. Several replies pushed back. DMZ Early Access isn't tied to a pricier edition, they pointed out. It comes with any digital pre-order or pre-purchase (Standard Digital or Vault Edition) on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox on PC, PS5, Battle.net, Steam and Switch 2. So the "advantage" mostly goes to people willing to play DMZ. Physical-disc buyers are the real exception: they wait for October 23 either way.
Whatever you think of it, the effect is real. On launch day, some of the lobby will already have leveled guns and unlocked attachments, and fresh Level 1 accounts will be matched against them. That's worth knowing before you play your first Multiplayer match.
How do you get the most out of DMZ Early Access (Oct 20–22)?
If your goal is Multiplayer readiness, play DMZ as a weapon-XP farm first and a loot game second:
- Pick your Multiplayer main now. Every level on that gun in DMZ is a level you skip on the 23rd. Use guns from your Stash or Free Loadout, or loot the one you want in Hajin. To buy a specific base gun, you first need to extract with its Weapon Manual. Infinity Ward's AMA hint is that Manuals often turn up in military containers and safes.
- Chase Shared Attachments. Each attachment unlocks once for every compatible weapon, and levels that would give you one you already own become a Bonus Level Up. Leveling one gun per class unlocks a lot of attachments for the rest of your build.
- Run Dynamic Ops and Story Missions. Activision lists them as the main DMZ XP sources, and that XP counts toward your 1–55 rank even if the run fails.
- Use Vault perks if you have them. Vault Edition owners start with a third Active Duty slot and one-time DMZ access to the Signature Weapon Collection Blueprints.
- Plan the Apex. On weapons that support one, the Apex Attachment unlocks only after the full level track (72 levels on the M4). Launchers have no attachments or Apex Attachments. See our Apex Attachments explainer and the day-one weapon leveling guide for the fastest Multiplayer routes once you're in.
Timing note: Activision hasn't posted an exact unlock hour for DMZ Early Access. Campaign Early Access went live at 10 AM PT, and most trackers expect DMZ to follow the same pattern. Our DMZ Early Access explainer covers eligibility and the rollout.

FAQ
Does weapon XP from MW4 DMZ Early Access carry over to Multiplayer? Yes. Activision calls weapon progression "a global system," so levels you earn on a gun in DMZ from October 20 count on the same gun in Multiplayer at the October 23 launch.
Does DMZ XP level up my Multiplayer rank? Yes. DMZ XP contributes to the standard 1–55 Player Progression. It doesn't work the other way: Multiplayer and Warzone XP don't raise your separate 1–70 DMZ Level.
Do I lose XP if I die in DMZ without extracting? No. Activision says the DMZ XP you earned during a deployment still counts even if you fail to exfil. You only lose the gear and loot you didn't secure.
If I unlock a gun in DMZ, can I use it in Multiplayer? Not automatically. DMZ weapon access comes from Weapon Manuals you extract with, and Infinity Ward says those unlocks don't cross into Multiplayer or Warzone. Weapon levels on the gun are shared, but access isn't.
Can I use my campaign Double XP Tokens during DMZ Early Access? No. Activision says campaign rewards, including the Double XP and Double Weapon XP Tokens, become usable in Multiplayer and DMZ at the full launch on October 23.
Who gets MW4 DMZ Early Access? Anyone who digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the Standard Digital or Vault Edition on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox on PC, PS5, Battle.net, Steam or Switch 2. Physical copies don't include it.
