Modern Warfare 4 is the biggest Call of Duty launch in years, and the first mistake most players will make happens in the first 48 hours: they spread themselves across too many tracks at once. With 33 launch weapons, nine mastery camos split across three separate modes, a brand-new Armory progression system, and a campaign that unlocks a full week before multiplayer, the launch window rewards a plan — not vibes.
This is a day-by-day priority order for MW4's launch week: what unlocks when, what to grind first, and where the time actually goes. Everything here is checked against Activision's official pages — with the handful of still-provisional details flagged clearly, because Infinity Ward has not published every challenge requirement yet.

Quick answer
What should you grind first in Modern Warfare 4? If you pre-ordered digitally, play the campaign first during Early Access (October 16) — it's the only thing available, and it's the calmest week to clear it. When multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone open on October 23, the correct order is: (1) level your 2-3 main weapons to max first, because a maxed gun clears camo challenges far faster and unlocks its Apex Attachments; (2) rank up your account for perk/equipment unlocks; (3) start the mastery camo grind last, once your guns and challenges are set up. Do not chase all nine camos across all three modes at once — pick one mode and one weapon class and finish it. If you want the camos, levels and easy lobbies from day one without the grind, MW4 services are live now.
When does everything actually unlock?
Two dates matter, and mixing them up is why half the subreddit will be confused on launch day.
- Friday, October 16 (PT) — Campaign Early Access. Anyone who digitally pre-orders or pre-purchases any edition on any platform gets the full campaign a week early, per Activision's official support page. This is campaign only — no multiplayer, DMZ or Warzone.
- Friday, October 23, 2026 — full launch. Multiplayer, DMZ and the new chapter of Warzone all go live the same day, on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, Battle.net, Xbox on PC and Steam. Pacific-time players get the rolling unlock first, around 9:00 PM PT on the 22nd.
If you did not pre-order digitally (disc buyers and anyone buying at launch included), you start everything on the 23rd. Full timing and preload sizing is in our campaign early access guide and the file size & preload breakdown — preload before the 16th so you're not watching a download bar while early access ticks away.
October 16-22: play the campaign (and nothing else is available)
During Early Access week the campaign is the whole game. That's a gift, not a limitation.
The smart move is to clear the campaign on the hardest difficulty now, while multiplayer isn't competing for your evenings. Veteran-difficulty completions are far less stressful when you're not also trying to grind camos and rank at the same time. Early Access week is the calmest window to attempt hard-difficulty campaign runs — before multiplayer starts competing for your evenings.
There's also a progression reason. CoD campaigns have historically handed out operator skins, weapon blueprints and XP tokens as completion rewards — bank those during the quiet week so you walk into multiplayer on the 23rd with your double-XP tokens ready to fire.
October 23, step 1: max your main weapons first (not camos)
Here's the single most important launch-week decision, and most players get it backwards: level your guns before you chase camos.
MW4 ships with a progression system where every one of the 33 weapons starts at level 1, and each weapon tracks its camo challenges separately in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. There are 24 primary weapons, 8 secondaries and 1 melee weapon in the launch Create-a-Class pool, per Infinity Ward's confirmed arsenal. A maxed weapon matters for two reasons:
- Apex Attachments are gated behind max weapon level. You can only equip MW4's new top-tier Apex Attachments once a gun is fully leveled — and those attachments are what make a gun a camo-grinding machine.
- A maxed, kitted gun clears camo challenges dramatically faster. Trying to grind camos on a stock level-1 weapon is the slowest path there is.
So pick two or three guns you actually like, and drive them to max before you touch the mastery grind. Our weapon leveling guide and the breakdown of the new Armory unlock system cover exactly which sources give the most weapon XP per hour.
October 23, step 2: rank your account for perks and equipment
Parallel to weapon XP is your account rank, which gates perks, equipment, field upgrades and eventually Prestige. You don't need to front-load this the way you do weapons, but a few things to know:
- Account level and weapon level are separate tracks — leveling a gun doesn't rank your account as fast as objective-mode play does.
- Prestige mechanics return; what carries and what resets is covered in our prestige & rank guide and the carry-over explainer.
- Objective modes bank the most account XP per match. If you want the fastest honest path, our rank-up-fast walkthrough lays out the mode rotation.

October 23, step 3: now start the mastery camo grind
Only once your main guns are maxed and your challenges are visible should you commit to camos — and even then, do not spread across all three modes.
MW4 reorganizes mastery camos by mode instead of one global ladder. There are nine mastery camos — three per mode across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. Based on the August beta, the top camo in each mode appears to be Orion Reforged (Multiplayer), Empyros (Warzone) and Helio (DMZ). ⚠️ Treat those names — and any specific kill-count requirements you see quoted online — as provisional: Activision has not published the final written camo list or challenge requirements, so read the unlock text in-game before you commit to a grind. The full mode-by-mode breakdown lives in our mastery camo unlock guide.
The grind discipline that works: finish one weapon's challenges before switching, use playlists that spawn your active challenge often, and save weapon-XP boosts for focused sessions rather than sprinkling them.
What about the sweaty launch lobbies?
This is the wildcard that wrecks launch-week plans. The first two weeks of any CoD have the sweatiest lobbies of the year, because the population is a blender of pros and casuals and matchmaking hasn't settled.
MW4's beta ran a new matchmaking system that Infinity Ward says prioritizes connection quality, with different playlists offering varied matchmaking presets. But when pressed on skill-based matchmaking specifically, Infinity Ward's co-studio head declined to detail changes despite heavy community backlash, per Dexerto — so treat the exact SBMM behavior as unconfirmed until launch. How it works and how to get easier lobbies is in our SBMM-at-launch guide.
Reddit's MW4 threads are already full of the two complaints that define launch week: guns feeling painfully slow to level at base, and lobbies being wall-to-wall sweats. Both are exactly the problems that eat your launch week — which is why so many players lean on private, low-pressure lobbies to knock out the grind.
The shortcut: grind on easy mode from day one
If your launch week is short on hours, the fastest honest alternative to a 40-hour public grind is a private bot lobby — you clear camo challenges and weapon levels against bots instead of against the sweatiest lobbies of the year. Our bot lobbies explainer covers how they work and whether they're safe. Everything below is live and pre-orderable now, ready day one:
Lock in your MW4 setup before launch — bot lobbies, camo + weapon leveling ready day one:
- MW4 Bot Lobbies — private lobbies from $5.90; level weapons and chase camos on easy mode while everyone else fights sweats.
- MW4 Weapon Leveling — max any gun and unlock every attachment, including Apex tier.
- MW4 Mastery Camo Bundle — all mastery camos, fast and secure.
- MW4 Account Leveling — skip the grind and hit a high rank fast with pro players.

Should I grind camos or weapon levels first in MW4? Weapon levels first. A maxed weapon unlocks its Apex Attachments and clears camo challenges far faster, so leveling your main guns before chasing camos is the efficient order.
How many mastery camos are in MW4? Nine — three per mode across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. The top-tier beta names were Orion Reforged (MP), Empyros (Warzone) and Helio (DMZ), but Activision has not published the final challenge list, so confirm requirements in-game.

Is there a fast way to get camos and levels without grinding? Yes — private bot lobbies let you clear challenges against bots, and weapon leveling and camo services unlock them on your account directly.
