Quick answer: which NBA 2K27 edition should you buy?
For most players, the $69.99 Standard Edition (Victor Wembanyama cover) is the right buy — it is the only edition on every platform, including Nintendo Switch 2, and it plays the exact same game on September 4, 2026. Pay up only if you specifically want two things: to play early, and a big pile of Virtual Currency (VC). The $99.99 Deluxe Edition adds 100,000 VC plus a week of Early Access (from August 28); the $149.99 Ultra Edition stacks 135,000 VC, guaranteed MyTEAM cards, and season passes on top. Everything above Standard is a head start and a MyTEAM/MyCAREER convenience package — not more basketball.
This guide breaks down all three NBA 2K27 editions using only what 2K has officially confirmed (2K Newsroom press releases and the Steam store listing, both verified in mid-August 2026), the exact VC amounts, the Early Access rules, and the traps that cost buyers money.

Two things jump out immediately, and both are the exact things buyers get wrong:
| 1. Only the Standard Edition is sold on Nintendo Switch 2. The Deluxe and Ultra Editions are **PS5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC only. If you play on Switch 2, your only option is Standard — and, as we'll see, that also means no Early Access on Switch 2.** |
|---|
- The Standard Edition contains 0 VC by itself. The 10,000 VC that gets advertised alongside it is a pre-purchase bonus, not part of the base package — you only get it if you buy before launch.
What is VC, and why does it drive the edition price?
Virtual Currency (VC) is NBA 2K27's real-money currency. You spend it to upgrade your MyPLAYER's attributes in MyCAREER, buy animations and apparel, and open MyTEAM packs. You can earn it by playing — MyCAREER games, City and REC activity, daily rewards, Seasons progress — or buy it outright. VC is the single biggest reason the Deluxe and Ultra Editions cost more. You are essentially pre-buying a stack of VC at a bundle discount.
Here is the exact, confirmed VC math (from 2K's press release and the Steam edition panels):
- Standard: 0 VC included. Pre-purchase bonus of 10,000 VC if you buy before launch.
- Deluxe: 100,000 VC included.
- Ultra: 135,000 VC included (2K phrases it as Deluxe's contents "plus an additional 35,000 VC").
⚠️ One number nobody can confirm yet: whether the 10,000 VC pre-order bonus stacks on top of the Deluxe/Ultra totals (making them 110,000 and 145,000). Several third-party sites print those "stacked" totals, but neither 2K's press release nor the Steam page actually says the bonus stacks — so treat the confirmed edition amounts as 100,000 and 135,000, with the 10,000 bonus as a separate maybe. 2K has also not published NBA 2K27 VC pack prices, so anyone quoting "how much 100,000 VC would cost you" is using last year's numbers. We'll update this the moment 2K's store goes live on August 28.
The practical takeaway: if you were going to buy VC anyway, the Deluxe/Ultra bundle is cheaper than buying that VC à la carte. If you're a casual who doesn't spend on VC, you're paying $30–$80 for currency you'd never have purchased — which is why the Reddit veterans' standard advice to newcomers is blunt: get the cheapest one.
What each edition actually includes
Standard Edition — $69.99 (Victor Wembanyama)
The full game, nothing withheld. Wembanyama — whom 2K's release calls "the NBA's first-ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year" — fronts it. This is the only edition available on all four platforms, and the only one you can buy on Switch 2. Pre-purchasing adds a 10,000 VC bonus. No Early Access.
Deluxe Edition — $99.99 (Caitlin Clark)
Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever is the cover — the first WNBA player ever to headline her own global NBA 2K cover, a genuine franchise first. For your extra $30 over Standard you get:
- 100,000 VC
- MyCAREER boosts: 25× 6-types Skill Boosts, 25× 3-types Gatorade Boosts, a Victor Wembanyama jersey, a Caitlin Clark jersey, and a 2-hour 2XP Coin
- MyTEAM: the full '27: Series 1 Team Selection, a Triple Threat Park Free Agent Pack, 5× '27: Series 1 Packs, and a 2-hour 2XP Coin
- Early Access from August 28
Ultra Edition — $149.99 (Derrick Rose)
Chicago legend Derrick Rose — "the youngest MVP in NBA history," last seen on the NBA 2K13 cover — fronts the top tier. Ultra includes everything in Deluxe, plus:
- +35,000 VC (for 135,000 VC total)
- A Season 1 Pro Pass
- The Summer Season Pass Pro Pass Bundle (Seasons 7–9 Pro Passes, releasing Summer 2027)
- The Roses Oversize Hoodie in MyCAREER
- Premium MyTEAM player cards, including a guaranteed 98 OVR card (December 2026) and a guaranteed Invincible card (May 2027), delivered via The Exchange
There's a catch that matters more than the price tag — see the next section.
The Ultra Edition trap: "unauctionable" cards
Per NBA 2K27's Steam listing, all of the Ultra Edition's bonus MyTEAM cards and packs are "unauctionable." That means you cannot sell them on the Auction House — you're locked into using them yourself. If your MyTEAM plan was to flip a guaranteed 98 OVR or Invincible card for a mountain of market currency, that plan doesn't work. It's the same "buy-and-keep" restriction Madden players know from BND (Bound) cards. Factor it in before you pay the extra $50 over Deluxe.
Two more Ultra fine-print items:
- Ultra is limited-time and digital-only. 2K's two press releases actually disagree on the exact cutoff (one says "through September 6," the other "through September 4"), so don't trust a single date — just know it disappears within the first days after launch. Buy it before then or you can't get it.
- NBA 2K26 owners get a 10% Ultra discount. If you owned NBA 2K26 and pre-order the Ultra Edition on the same platform, 2K offers a 10% loyalty discount — but only through the platform store, through September 3, 2026, limit one per account (2K notes it "is not responsible for fulfillment").
Early Access: who plays first, and who doesn't
Early Access begins 9:00 AM PT on August 28, 2026 — for Deluxe and Ultra owners only. That's up to a week before the September 4 global launch. Standard owners wait for launch day.
The most-missed fact: there is no Early Access on Switch 2. Because Deluxe and Ultra aren't sold on Switch 2 at all, Switch 2 players — who can only buy Standard — start on September 4 like everyone else. No amount of pre-ordering unlocks early play on Switch 2.
You may also see "September 3" floating around as a release date, especially on Steam. That's a storefront timezone artifact — Steam renders the unlock in a different time zone. 2K's official date is September 4. (We break the exact unlock times down platform-by-platform in our NBA 2K27 release date and Early Access times guide.)
Pre-order bonuses — and a deadline you can still hit
Beyond the edition contents, 2K is running Limited-Time Offer (LTO) bonus packs with a hard deadline of 10:00 AM PT on August 17, 2026. Verified on the Steam listing:
- NBA 2K27 LTO Bonus Pack: a Hyperdrive Suit and a 90 OVR Victor Wembanyama MyTEAM card in NBA 2K27.
- NBA 2K26 LTO Bonus Pack: 15,000 VC, a Racecar Helmet, and a G.O.A.T. Stephen Curry MyTEAM card in NBA 2K26 (you need to own 2K26 to use this one).
Steam bundles both under the Ultra pre-purchase; whether the LTO packs also apply to Standard/Deluxe pre-orders isn't spelled out, so verify on your storefront before assuming. All bonus content requires an internet connection and an NBA 2K Account to redeem. Note that the 90 OVR Wembanyama card is a MyTEAM card, not his in-game player rating — 2K has not announced any player ratings for NBA 2K27 yet.
Regional and platform gotchas
- The Deluxe and Ultra Editions are not available in Brazil — verbatim from 2K's press release. Brazilian players are limited to Standard.
| - NBA 2K27 is a current-gen-and-Switch-2 title only. The platforms are **PS5, Xbox Series X | S, PC (Steam), and Switch 2. There is no PS4, Xbox One, or original Switch version.** If you're on an Xbox One or PS4, NBA 2K27 will not run on your console — that's a genuine recurring question from players still on last-gen hardware. |
|---|
So, which edition is worth it? (The verdict)
- Buy Standard ($69.99) if you're a casual, a MyNBA/Play Now player, a newcomer, or on Switch 2. Same game, same launch day, none of the VC premium.
- Buy Deluxe ($99.99) if you (a) want to play a week early and (b) were going to spend real money on VC anyway — the 100,000 VC essentially pays for the upgrade if you're a MyCAREER grinder or MyTEAM spender.
- Buy Ultra ($149.99) only if you're a heavy MyTEAM player who values the guaranteed 98 OVR and Invincible cards, the extra 35,000 VC, and the season passes — and you've accepted that those cards are unauctionable. It's also the only edition on a countdown clock, so decide before it's pulled.
Whatever tier you pick, remember the real cost driver is VC, and VC is spent grinding attributes and packs. The smartest pre-launch move is to plan how you'll earn (not just buy) VC in MyCAREER and MyTEAM once the servers go live — we'll have those routes verified and ready the moment NBA 2K27 is playable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the NBA 2K27 Deluxe or Ultra Edition worth it? Only if you want to play early (from August 28) or you were going to buy Virtual Currency anyway. Deluxe includes 100,000 VC and Ultra 135,000 VC, which offsets the price bump for players who spend on VC. If you don't spend on VC and don't need Early Access, the $69.99 Standard Edition is the same game.
What's the difference between the NBA 2K27 editions? The gameplay is identical across all three. The differences are the cover athlete (Wembanyama / Clark / Rose), the amount of VC included (0 / 100,000 / 135,000), Early Access (Standard has none), and Ultra's extras — season passes plus guaranteed MyTEAM cards that are "unauctionable" (can't be sold on the Auction House).
Can I get NBA 2K27 Early Access on Switch 2? No. Early Access (August 28) is for Deluxe and Ultra owners only, and neither of those editions is sold on Switch 2 — only the Standard Edition is. Switch 2 players start on the September 4 launch day.
| Can I play NBA 2K27 on PS4, Xbox One, or the original Switch? No. NBA 2K27 is only available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. There is no last-gen (PS4/Xbox One) or original Switch version. |
|---|
Does the Standard Edition come with VC? Not by itself — it includes 0 VC. Pre-purchasing the Standard Edition before launch adds a 10,000 VC bonus, but that's a pre-order incentive, not part of the base package.
When is the last day to get the NBA 2K27 pre-order bonus packs? The Limited-Time Offer bonus packs (including the 90 OVR Wembanyama MyTEAM card) must be pre-ordered by 10:00 AM PT on August 17, 2026. All bonus content requires an internet connection and an NBA 2K Account to redeem.
All details verified against 2K Newsroom press releases (July 22 and July 28, 2026) and the NBA 2K27 Steam listing (AppID 4356430) as of August 12, 2026. NBA 2K27 has not released; anything about in-game "best builds," ratings, VC farming rates, or MyTEAM prices is not yet knowable. We'll update this guide after the game is playable.
