Fresh off the console launch? The single most-asked new-player question in the Once Human community right now is blunt: "how do I get a gun?" The good news — you do not wish, roll, or trade for your first real weapon. You craft it from a blueprint, and since the March 2026 system overhaul, unlocking that blueprint is far simpler than every pre-2026 guide still tells you.
Quick answer: how to get weapons in Once Human (2026)
| You get weapons by unlocking their blueprint, then crafting the gun at a workbench. The fastest first-gun path on any platform (PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X | S, PC, mobile) is: |
|---|
- Play the main Journey quests — the tutorial hands you a starter pistol and teaches crafting. If you skipped it, follow the Journey tab objectives.
- Build a Weapon Crafting Bench in your territory, then craft a weapon whose blueprint you own.
- Unlock better blueprints in the Blueprint System by spending Starchrom (a fixed cost per blueprint — no gacha, no fragment hoarding anymore).
- Loot settlements and Silos for weapon crates and gear you can reverse-engineer for Tech Points and recipes.
- Craft ammo at a Supply Bench — a gun with no ammo is the other half of the "I have no weapon" problem.
You cannot be handed a gun by another player — weapons and armor are not tradeable in Once Human. Everybody loots or crafts their own. Below is exactly how, in the current (patch 3.0.7, 2026) system.
The one thing that trips up every returning player: the old Wish Machine "pull blueprint fragments and combine them" loop is gone. Since March 2026 you unlock a full weapon blueprint directly in the Blueprint System for a set Starchrom price. If a guide tells you to farm fragments, it is out of date.
Your very first gun comes from the tutorial
Once Human eases you in. The opening Main Story / Journey sequence puts a basic weapon in your hands within the first few minutes and walks you through crafting, a workbench, and ammo. As one veteran bluntly told a stuck new player on the official subreddit: "Restart and actually play the main quest/tutorial — the game outlines steps for your journey in the Journey tab. The game teaches you step by step."
If you genuinely have no weapon and no idea why, you almost certainly skipped or outran the tutorial. Open your Journey tab (the quest tracker) and complete the earliest unfinished objective. It will route you to a weapon.
The three benches you need early, and what each one does:
| Facility | What it makes | Why you need it first |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon Crafting Bench | Guns and melee weapons from blueprints you own | This is where a blueprint becomes an actual gun |
| Supply Bench | Ammunition, consumables, basic supplies | A crafted gun is useless without ammo from here |
| Gear Crafting Bench | Armor pieces from armor blueprints | Keeps you alive while you hunt better weapons |
Build all three as soon as your territory is placed. The materials are common early-game drops (wood, copper, etc.) and the blueprints for the benches themselves come from early Memetics.
How weapon blueprints actually work now (the 2026 system)
This is the part every stale guide gets wrong. Here is the current model.
In Once Human, a weapon is defined by its blueprint. Owning the blueprint lets you craft that weapon at the bench, and later upgrade its star rating (★1 to ★6) for more power. Blueprints and their star ratings are permanent across scenarios — this is why veterans rebuild their arsenal in an afternoon when a new server opens.
You acquire blueprints two ways in 2026:
- The Blueprint System (primary): Open your backpack → Blueprints tab. Browse the weapon and armor pools, pick the one you want, and unlock it directly with Starchrom for a fixed, displayed cost. (For example, the humble Wrench melee blueprint unlocks for 200 Starchrom in the Blueprint System.) There is no randomness — you pay the listed price and the blueprint is yours. This replaced the old fragment-combining grind in March 2026.
- The Wish Machine (legacy/limited pools): The Wish Machine still exists for limited-time prize pools and some seasonal weapons, where you spend Starchrom to pull. But it is no longer the main way to build out a weapon set, and you should not sink your early Starchrom into it chasing a specific gun — buy that gun's blueprint directly instead.
Where Starchrom comes from. Starchrom is the game's main progression currency, earned steadily through the normal loop: exploration, Journey tasks, weekly and seasonal objectives, phase rewards, events, and the Battle Pass. One important guardrail — there is a regional monthly cap on how much Starchrom you can earn, so spend it deliberately on the weapon and armor set you actually play rather than unlocking everything. (For a deeper farming routine, see our Starchrom and Energy Links farming guide.)
"You can buy the blueprints and upgrade their stars with Starchrom… sometimes you might find a gun or armor that you can put in the research machine and reverse-engineer. When you clear a settlement of its weapon/gear crate and mystic crate there is a chance to find a blueprint." — a player summarizing the current loop on r/OnceHumanOfficial, October 2026.
Loot cities and settlements for free weapons and blueprints
You do not have to craft everything. Dropped weapons are a perfectly good early arsenal, and settlements are stuffed with gear.
When you enter a new, uncompleted city or settlement, you get objectives like find the Mystical Crate, repair the Worldstone, and locate weapon and gear crates. Clearing these is the fastest way to arm up without spending a single Starchrom:
- Weapon and gear crates drop ready-to-use guns and armor at the area's level.
- Mystical Crates have a chance to contain blueprints — a free unlock you would otherwise pay Starchrom for.
- Silos and Monoliths (the endgame-ish dungeons) also have a minor chance to drop blueprints, on top of strong gear.
A practical early rhythm: explore cities matched to your level (each has a recommended level — around level 5 for the first ones in Manibus Novice), clear the crates, equip what drops, and reverse-engineer the rest. As one mobile player put it: "Even though I can craft the finest weapons, I like playing with dropped gear — you just need to loot more."
Reverse Engineering: turn junk loot into Tech Points
The green wrench tool is your best friend. Carry it, and reverse-engineer (dismantle) weapons, gear, and items you do not need.
Reverse Engineering at a Tech Research Workbench converts items into Tech Points, which you spend to unlock Memetics — the tech tree that gates crafting recipes, facility upgrades, and build-defining gear. A big chunk of the "I can't find the recipe" confusion new players hit is exactly this: many recipes were moved out of the open world and onto the tech tree. If a recipe seems to have vanished, it is almost certainly a Memetics unlock you have not bought yet.
The 2026 Tech Research Workbench has two modes:
- Reverse Engineering — feed it loot, get Tech Points. (Batch reverse-engineering was added in 2026, so you can process a whole farming run at once instead of one item at a time.)
- Invention — experiment with different combinations of materials and it rolls a random blueprint, a secondary way to pick up new recipes (the outcome and success rate scale with the type and quantity of materials you invest).
Always keep the wrench equipped, dismantle everything you will not use, and feed the Tech Research Workbench constantly. Tech Points are the quiet currency that unlocks half the recipes you think are missing.
Fast-track checklist: from zero to armed
Do these in order and you will be comfortably geared within your first few hours:
- Finish the opening Journey quests — collect the starter weapon and learn the benches.
- Place your territory and build the Weapon Crafting Bench, Supply Bench, and Gear Crafting Bench.
- Craft ammo at the Supply Bench before every outing.
- Clear nearby settlements (at or near your level) for weapon/gear crates and Mystical Crate blueprints.
- Carry the wrench and reverse-engineer spare loot into Tech Points → unlock Memetics recipes.
- Spend Starchrom in the Blueprint System on the one or two weapons you want to main — a shotgun or AR for PvE Manibus is a safe first pick — then upgrade its stars over time.
- Only touch the Wish Machine for limited-time pools you specifically want.

FAQ
How do you get a gun in Once Human? You craft it from a blueprint at a Weapon Crafting Bench, or you loot one from a weapon crate in a settlement. The tutorial gives you a starter weapon automatically; after that you unlock more blueprints in the Blueprint System with Starchrom, or find them in Mystical Crates and dungeons.
Can someone give me a weapon in Once Human? No. Weapons and armor are not tradeable in Once Human — friend trading is limited to Tools, Consumables, Materials and Special items, and guns are not in those categories. Every player loots or crafts their own weapons. If you have no gun, play the Journey quests or loot a settlement; nobody can hand you one.
Do I still need to collect blueprint fragments? No, not for the main blueprint set. Since the March 2026 overhaul you unlock full weapon and armor blueprints directly in the Blueprint System for a fixed Starchrom cost. The old "pull fragments from the Wish Machine and combine them" loop is legacy — any guide that tells you to farm fragments is out of date.
Why can't I find a recipe I used to have? Many recipes were moved from the open world onto the tech tree. Open your Memetics and check whether the recipe is a Tech Point unlock you haven't bought yet. Reverse-engineer loot with the wrench at a Tech Research Workbench to earn the Tech Points you need.
Where do I get Starchrom for blueprints? Starchrom comes from exploration, Journey tasks, weekly and seasonal objectives, phase rewards, events, and the Battle Pass. There is a regional monthly earning cap, so spend it on the weapons you actually play rather than unlocking everything at once.
How do I make ammo in Once Human? Ammunition is crafted at a Supply Bench, not the Weapon Crafting Bench. If your gun won't fire, you are almost certainly out of ammo — build a Supply Bench in your territory and craft rounds before heading out.
What's the best first weapon to craft? For a new PvE player in Manibus, a reliable AR or shotgun blueprint from the Blueprint System is the safest early investment because you can keep upgrading its stars as you progress. Don't spread your early Starchrom thin — commit to one or two weapons and level them.
