Once Human Classes Explained: All Classes and the Best One to Pick (2026)

Once Human's class system trips up almost every new player, because it is not the class system you know from other RPGs. There are no warriors, mages or healers. Instead you pick a specialized job — Chef, Gardener or Beastmaster — that changes how you cook, farm or fight alongside animals, and you can still build any weapon and any playstyle on top of it.

This guide covers every class in Once Human as of the September 2026 updates, exactly what each one does, which to pick for solo play, group play and pure combat, and the class-change rules that confuse everyone. It applies across PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X/S, PC and mobile. If you're brand new, pair it with our Once Human console beginner guide for your first hours.

Quick answer: which Once Human class should you pick?

  • New player who just wants the strongest all-round boost: pick Chef. The Glutton talent lets you stack two food and two drink effects at once, which is a flat quality-of-life and damage-uptime win for any build.
  • Solo player who wants combat help and the most gameplay-changing class: pick Beastmaster. After the September 28 (PT) update it summons up to 3 animals at once again, plus rideable mounts and 70% carry-load reduction on animals.
  • Base builder / long-term farmer: pick Gardener for biomechanical crops that fight, gather and produce resources.
  • Not sure yet: pick Freelancer. It has no special ability but comes with a class-change item, so you can commit later without wasting your pick.

The most important fact up front: your class does not lock your weapons, your Deviations or your build. A Chef can still be a top DPS player; a Beastmaster can still snipe. The class only adds a job-flavored core ability and three talents on top of your normal progression.

What is the Once Human class system?

Once Human's class system launched with Annual Version 2.0: Dreamveil, entering public testing after the July 3, 2025 anniversary update, and it replaced the old Memetic Specialization approach to identity. The studio was explicit about why, and about what a class is not.

"This isn't a traditional MMO class system. In Once Human, classes aren't rigid archetypes but specialized jobs that enrich your character progression and exploration of Nalcott." — Once Human Development Team, official 2.0 Dreamveil class preview

That single line clears up most of the confusion. In its own words, the dev team built the class system because the old Memetic Specialization pushed players into "meta builds" and min-maxing, "contrary to our goal of playstyle diversity." Classes are meant to open up playstyles, not fence them off.

Here is how it actually works:

  • Each class has one core ability that changes a gameplay rule, plus three talents that reinforce it, plus starting items.
  • Classes are available in all non-Novice scenarios, and are excluded from Once Human: RaidZone (RaidZone starts everyone at Level 50 with no carried-in progression, so classes don't apply there). If you're unclear on what a scenario resets versus keeps, see what carries over between Once Human scenarios.
  • You choose your class in the wilderness after creating a character and finishing the tutorial tasks — not at character creation.
  • Your class does not touch your weapons, armor, Mods, Deviations or damage build. You keep full freedom over those.

Because a class is a job and not an archetype, "best class" is really "best job for how you like to play." Below is each one, verified against the official preview.

Every Once Human class, explained

Chef

The Chef breaks the recipe-locked cooking system. Its core ability, Creative Cooking, lets you freely combine ingredients into custom dishes, with a chance for a "Success" that grants enhanced effects and longer durations. Chefs start with a Campfire Stove (a solar-powered portable cooker that needs no fuel and can be deployed outside your territory) and a Gourmet Atlas that records your creative recipes.

Its three talents:

  • Glutton — consume more food than normal to run up to 2 food effects and 2 drink effects at the same time. This is the headline reason Chef is the strongest all-round early pick.
  • Ingredient Scent — a chance for bonus ingredients when gathering from Fridges, Beverage Machines and Food Crates in wilderness settlements.
  • Fine Cuisine — repeatedly eating the same creative dish enhances its effects and duration over time.

Who it's for: brand-new players, solo players, and anyone who wants a permanent stat and buff-uptime edge without changing their combat build. Stacking two food and two drink buffs is a real, always-on advantage.

Gardener

The Gardener turns farming into an economy and combat engine. Its core ability, HP Sewing, lets you graft crops with other crops, or with biomechanical parts dropped by Biomechanical Deviants, to grow dual-stat crops or special biomechanical crops that can fight, gather and produce resources. The Portable Planter Box lets those mutant crops travel with you outside your territory.

Its three talents:

  • Environmental Expert — an Environment Detector that reads environmental parameters in real time, plus crafting to restore and enhance soil.
  • Portable Planting — store biomechanical parts or mass-produce seeds from mature crops on the go.
  • Greenhouse Technology — a Greenhouse Module to manipulate crop growth conditions.

Version 2.0 also added a Fertility parameter to wilderness soil: high fertility grants bonus effects, growing crops lowers it, and Soil Solution (or time) replenishes it. Note the nuance — low fertility does not cut yields, it only removes the bonus.

Who it's for: base builders and long-haul players who want a self-sustaining materials and resource machine. It's the "chill economy" class more than a combat class.

Beastmaster

The Beastmaster is the most gameplay-changing class, and it's the one getting the biggest changes this month. Its core ability, Beast Partner, uses a Beast Whistle to summon and command an animal to fight, gather or mine, swappable back in your territory. You pick a starting partner: Pongo (a green boar that excels at gathering and can forage rare items), Misha (a large golden bear that tanks in battle) or Shiro (a white wolf that evolves through combat).

Its three talents:

  • Beast Whisperer — wild animals won't attack or flee from you, and you can inspect their stats and traits.
  • Breeding Expert — use mutant genes to change animal traits and raise partners that keep growing.
  • Wilderness Master — craft gear that boosts a partner's combat, gathering, production and growth.

Who it's for: solo players who want combat companions doing damage and gathering while they fight, plus anyone who enjoys collecting, breeding and riding animals. It has the steepest learning curve of the three but the highest ceiling.

Freelancer

The Freelancer is the "no class" option. It has no unique ability, but it comes with a class-change item, so you can play the class system's default and switch into Chef, Gardener or Beastmaster once you've decided what fits. Many players deliberately start Freelancer to avoid locking in a pick too early.

The September 2026 Beastmaster changes you need to know

The Beastmaster is mid-overhaul right now, so its power level depends on the exact date you read this.

The September 16 (PT) update rolled out a major class-system overhaul adding Beast Riding — Beastmasters craft saddles and ride animals, gaining the animal's active and passive skills while mounted. But to ship on schedule, that build temporarily capped Beastmasters at summoning 1 animal at a time. The studio was direct about the walk-back:

"We realized that in our previous plan, we increased the strength of a single animal, but overlooked that having multiple animals fight alongside is the very reason many Metas chose and love Beastmasters." — Once Human Dev Blog, September 15, 2026

The timeline, straight from the official FAQ:

  • September 16 (PT) → September 28 (PT): Beastmasters could summon only 1 animal at a time.
  • After the September 28 (PT) update: Beastmasters are restored to 3 simultaneous summons (non-Beastmaster classes are capped at 1).

So if you're reading this on or after September 28, 2026, the 3-animal Beastmaster is back. For the full mechanics of saddles, mounts and how the summon system works, see our Once Human beast riding and summon-animals guide. Other confirmed perks: Beastmasters get a 70% load reduction when carrying animals, can use each animal's active and passive skills (non-Beastmasters cannot), and can craft saddles (non-Beastmasters can ride a saddled animal but can't craft the saddle). Currently rideable animals are Deer, Boar, Bear and Wild Buffalo, with aquatic animals confirmed as the next batch — a nod to the ocean-themed Isles of Abyss expansion arriving October 22, 2026.

Traits that depend on multiple animals — Pack Wolves, Alpha Wolf, Wrath of Nature, Tearer and similar — keep working, and the studio confirmed there is no depreciation of animals, rare patterns or attributes you already bred.

Best Once Human class for each playstyle

Here's the practical ranking. Remember these are jobs layered on top of your build, so "best" means best fit, not strongest character.

If you want…PickWhy
Strongest all-round buff, easiest first classChef2 food + 2 drink effects stacked via Glutton; helps every build, every scenario
Combat companions + highest skill ceilingBeastmasterUp to 3 summoned animals (post-Sept 28), mounts, active/passive animal skills
Base/resource economy, group supportGardenerBiomechanical crops that fight, gather and produce; self-sustaining materials
To decide later without wasting the pickFreelancerNo ability, but ships with a class-change item

The community consensus tracks this closely: Chef is the popular "just pick this first" answer for its universal buffs, Gardener is the farming and materials pick, and Beastmaster is the enthusiast pick that rewards investment in breeding and riding. None of them is a wrong answer, because you keep your full weapon and Deviation build regardless.

FAQ

Are Once Human classes like normal RPG classes with skills and roles? No. The studio states directly that "this isn't a traditional MMO class system" — classes are specialized jobs, each with one core ability and three talents, that change how you cook, farm or handle animals. They do not lock your weapons, Deviations or damage build, and there are no fixed roles like tank, healer or DPS.

What are all the classes in Once Human? As of September 2026 there are three active classes — Chef, Gardener and Beastmaster — plus Freelancer, the no-ability default that comes with a class-change item. The studio has said it will add more classes over time and issue class-change items when it does.

What is the best class in Once Human? For a first character, Chef is the safest strong pick because its Glutton talent stacks two food and two drink buffs for any build. Beastmaster is the best combat-companion and highest-ceiling class, especially now that 3-animal summons are restored after the September 28 update. Gardener is best for base-building and a self-sustaining resource economy. Pick by playstyle, not power.

Can you change your class in Once Human? Not freely on demand mid-scenario — your pick sticks for that character until the game gives you a class-change item. Existing characters received a class-change item when the system launched, Freelancer comes with one, and the studio issues new class-change items whenever it adds or rebalances classes. Many players start as Freelancer specifically so they can decide later.

When do you choose your class, and where does it work? You choose in the wilderness after creating a character and finishing the tutorial tasks — not at character creation. Classes are available in all non-Novice scenarios and are excluded from Once Human: RaidZone, which starts everyone at Level 50 with no carried-in progression.

How many animals can a Beastmaster summon now? From September 16 to September 28 (PT) 2026, Beastmasters were temporarily limited to 1 summoned animal. After the September 28 (PT) update, that returns to 3 simultaneous summons, while non-Beastmaster classes stay capped at 1. Beastmasters also get a 70% animal carry-load reduction and access to animal active and passive skills.

Does my class affect my weapons or build power? No. Your class adds a core ability, three talents and starting items, but your weapons, armor, Mods, calibration and Deviation build are entirely separate. A Chef or Gardener can be just as strong in combat as a Beastmaster.

Class details verified against the official Once Human 2.0 "Dreamveil" class-system preview and the September 11–23, 2026 class-system dev blogs on oncehuman.game. Update dates are in Pacific Time (PT).
