Quick answer (as of October 27, 2026): Onimusha: Way of the Sword has no story DLC, no expansion and no announced sequel. Its DLC is cosmetics, a few stat-boosting charms and a Red Souls pack. Three DLC packs are free right now: the Monster Hunter Rise collab outfits Hinoa (for the Oni Lady) and Yomogi's Dance (for Okuni), released September 7, 2026, plus Materials Pack: Red Souls I (2,500 Red Souls). Everything else comes from the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe kits or the pre-order and Early Adopter bonuses. You claim all of it at a Spirit Mirror → Additional Content. On a sequel, producer Akihito Kadowaki said at Gamescom 2026: "There's a desire to make more Onimusha games in the future. Obviously not committing to anything at the moment, but yeah, hopefully."
Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched on September 4, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It sold over 1 million units on day one, according to Capcom's September 7 press release. The ending also leaves a few threads open, and players are asking the same two things on r/Onimusha and the Steam forums: is there story DLC coming, and will there be a sequel?
This guide answers both with what is confirmed. It lists every DLC item on the store today, which ones are free, how to claim them in-game, and what Capcom has actually said about the series' future. It also separates that from fan theories and from the guesses on AI-written "DLC roadmap" pages.
Is there DLC for Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Yes, but none of it adds story. As of October 27, 2026, Steam's DLC page for the game (AppID 2638890) lists only cosmetics (outfits, haori coats, sword appearances, a gauntlet skin), three charms, one materials pack and the soundtrack. There is no expansion, no new chapter and no new boss in any of them.
Here is everything that exists, grouped by how you get it:
| DLC | What you get | How you get it | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outfit for the Oni Lady: Hinoa | Monster Hunter Rise collab outfit (cosmetic) | Free on every digital store | Free |
| Outfit for Okuni: Yomogi's Dance | Monster Hunter Rise collab outfit (cosmetic) | Free on every digital store | Free |

| Demo Bonus | Kubi Akari charm | Kept save data from the free demo | Free |
| Original Sound Track | Full soundtrack (released September 13, 2026) | Separate purchase | Paid |
The editions launched at $69.99 (Standard), $79.99 (Deluxe) and $89.99 (Premium Deluxe). Steam still lists the Standard Edition at $69.99 on October 27, 2026. Already own the Standard Edition? Steam also sells the Deluxe Kit (9 items), Premium Kit (10 items) and Premium Deluxe Kit (19 items) as add-ons, so you don't need to rebuy the game to upgrade. The Early Adopter deadline was September 25 on Steam and Epic but September 24 on PlayStation, Xbox, the Microsoft Store on Windows and Switch 2, per Capcom's product page. For the full breakdown of what each tier adds, see our editions comparison.
What free DLC can you claim in Onimusha: Way of the Sword right now?
Three items cost nothing. Many "DLC guides" still skip them, mostly because the two collab outfits arrived a few days after launch.
1. Outfit for the Oni Lady: Hinoa
Capcom released a Monster Hunter Rise collaboration on September 7, 2026. The first piece dresses the Oni Lady as Hinoa the Quest Maiden. Capcom's description has a joke in it: "It seems like the Oni Lady won't be sending anyone out on a Village Quest though." It is purely cosmetic. Capcom's collab page states that outfits "do not alter the character's performance in battle."
2. Outfit for Okuni: Yomogi's Dance
The second collab piece gives Izumo no Okuni an outfit based on Yomogi the Chef from Monster Hunter Rise. It is also cosmetic only. Capcom's official collab page confirms that both outfits "will be available as free DLC on each digital store," so PS5, Xbox, Switch 2 and PC players can all claim them.
3. Materials Pack: Red Souls I
This pack gives you 2,500 Red Souls, the currency you spend on the Enhance Equipment/Abilities screen. Steam lists it as free and dates it September 3, 2026 (US time), so it has been available since launch rather than arriving later. Capcom's store text says the Red Souls "can also be acquired naturally while playing the game," so this is a small head start, not a shortcut. For scale, the first Benkei fight on Gojo-Ohashi bridge alone drops about 4,025 Red Souls, according to GameTrek. The pack is worth claiming early, when 2,500 souls buys a meaningful upgrade. Our souls and upgrades guide covers what to buy first.
The name "Red Souls I" has fans hoping for a "II". GamingBible noted the numbering "could also hint that more free material packs may be released." That is speculation. Capcom has not announced a second pack.
How do you claim and use DLC in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
DLC is not applied automatically. Owning it on your store account is only step one:
- Download the DLC from your platform's store page (for the free packs, "buy" them at $0).
- Launch the game and reach a Spirit Mirror. Capcom notes that "Spirit Mirrors and Change Appearance will become unlocked separately as the game progresses," so a brand-new save has to play a little first.
- At the mirror, open Additional Content and claim each item. Depending on your platform and language, the menu may be labeled "Add-on Content," "Add-ons" or "Downloadable Content." Capcom's official account listed all four names.
- Equip it. Outfits, haori and sword skins go on through Change Appearance at the Spirit Mirror. Charms go in your charm slots. Red Souls are spent on Enhance Equipment/Abilities.
Demo Bonus (Kubi Akari charm): if you kept your demo save, first go to Settings → Privacy → Demo Bonus → Collect Reward, then claim it at a Spirit Mirror under Additional Content → Demo Bonus. This is the step most players miss. The charm never shows up if you skip the Settings part.
Can't see a claimed outfit? You have probably not unlocked Change Appearance yet. Keep playing and it appears at the mirror once the story unlocks it. Planning a second run? Check our NG+ carry-over list before you start Carnage.
Is the paid DLC worth it?
Mostly for the looks. The kits are largely cosmetic, with a few stat-boosting charms on top. Capcom's own wording draws the line clearly. Charms affect gameplay ("Equipping charms will strengthen Miyamoto Musashi's abilities"), while sword appearances are cosmetic ("They do not alter his performance in battle.").
That means the only paid items that change combat are the three Deluxe charms (Oni Lady, Little Dancer, Mentor) and the pre-order charms. The base game has plenty of charms you earn by playing, and several of them top our best charms tier list without costing anything extra. Nothing behind a paywall is needed to finish Carnage or get the platinum.
The best cosmetics are free anyway. The Raizan and Enryuu swords nod to the 2001 original's weapons, but the Panda costume, Wataru-kun outfit, Bishamon Sword and Warlord's Armor all come from play. Of those, only the Bishamon Sword (a Carnage clear) and Warlord's Armor 2 (all Carnage boss rematches) change gameplay. See our Bishamon Sword guide.
If you do want the paid set, Capcom's edition listing adds this note: "some content may become available at a later date."
Is there story DLC or an expansion for Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
No, and none has been announced as of October 27, 2026. We checked Capcom's investor-relations news, the official site and Steam's DLC list. The only addition since launch is the free Monster Hunter Rise outfit pair (the Red Souls pack was already there on day one). Capcom has not published a DLC roadmap or a season pass.
Be careful with pages titled "Onimusha Way of the Sword DLC release date" or "DLC plans." The ones ranking right now are fan wikis and aggregators repeating that Capcom "has a history of supporting its titles with post-launch content." That is a general statement about Capcom, not an announcement for this game.
Demand is clearly there, though. A Steam forum thread asked "Is there going to be any story DLCs?" after the credits. On r/Onimusha, a "DLC idea" thread from October 26 is full of requests for a Sasaki Ganryu chapter. One player wanted to see "how Ganryu gains his own Onimusha form after Gioh's soul becomes part of his gauntlet." Another pushed back that Capcom "won't do it" if it just retells the main story from the rival's side.
Will there be an Onimusha: Way of the Sword sequel?
Nothing is announced, but Capcom has said it would like to make more Onimusha games. Capcom's investor-relations news feed has no Onimusha announcement since the September 7 sales release. The clearest on-record statement comes from producer Akihito Kadowaki, speaking to SavePoint Gaming at Gamescom 2026:
"There's a desire to make more Onimusha games in the future. Obviously not committing to anything at the moment, but yeah, hopefully."
Director Satoru Nihei added that he hopes the new cast lasts: "Everyone will find a character they personally like. We think they'll be memorable five, ten years down the line."
The numbers support a follow-up, with three hard data points so far:
- 1 million+ units on day one. Capcom's official figure, from its September 7, 2026 press release.
- 10 million+ cumulative Onimusha series sales since 2001, a milestone this launch pushed the series past (Capcom).
- ~2 million copies across all platforms by the end of September, including ~730,000 on Steam. This is an analyst estimate from GameDiscoverCo, not a Capcom number. Our sales breakdown separates official from estimated figures.
Reviews were strong too: 85 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic, and the game won two awards at the Gamescom Awards 2026 (Capcom, August 31). A fast-selling, well-reviewed revival is the kind of game Capcom usually builds on. Still, "likely" is not "announced." Treat any "Onimusha 6" or "Way of the Sword 2" release date you see as invented. Capcom's earnings reports and official channels are where real news will appear first.
What would a sequel or DLC pick up from the ending?
Spoiler warning: this section mentions how the story ends.
The ending sets up a follow-up without promising one. After Musashi defeats Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the Genma-maker Dokyo escapes with a revived Sasaki Ganryu. The post-credits scene shows Musashi fighting beside Okuni, still wearing the Oni Gauntlet. Dokyo still at large plus a revived rival with his own gauntlet are the two obvious threads for a sequel or a Ganryu-focused DLC. That is our reading, though, not a Capcom announcement. The full breakdown is in our ending explained guide.
Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword a sequel to the old games?
No. It is a new entry, not a sequel, remake or remaster. Nihei called it a "fresh start," saying that after 20 years it had become "very difficult to tie directly into the story, characters, and lore of the older titles." Returning players will recognize series ideas like soul absorption, Genma and Oni gauntlets, but you don't need to have played Warlords or Dawn of Dreams.
Don't confuse it with Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny. That is a separate remaster of the 2002 game, released May 23, 2025 on PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
