Grinding Gear Games just closed out the August 27 GGG Live stream with the reveal Path of Exile 2 players were waiting on: the next event league is called The Forbidden Rites, it ships with patch 0.5.5, and it has a hard date — September 4 PDT, one week out. This is the last big content drop before the 1.0 full release on December 11, 2026, and it comes with a fresh, separate economy, a full Ritual takeover of the campaign, the return of the Wildwood, and a top-to-bottom overhaul of the Trial of Chaos.
Here's exactly what's confirmed, what it means for the economy, and how to be ready on day one.

Quick answer: what is The Forbidden Rites and when does it launch?
- Release date: September 4 PDT (next week). Full patch notes "will be made available soon," per GGG.
- What it is: a one-month event league for PoE2 with a fresh, separate economy — Ritual spreads across every campaign area, the Wildwood returns in the endgame, and the Trial of Chaos is overhauled.
- Is it a wipe? No. It's a temporary event league on a new character and new economy; your existing Runes of Aldur league and characters keep running.
- Is it 1.0? No. 1.0 (the full free-to-play launch with the Duelist and Acts 5–6) is still December 11, 2026. The Forbidden Rites is the transition league before it.
- Commercial reality: a fresh economy means everyone restarts from zero currency. Divine sits at ~354 Exalted on the current league (poe2scout, Aug 27) — that ratio resets to near-parity at a fresh start, then inflates again.
Verbatim (GGG press release, Aug 27): "The Forbidden Rites and Patch 0.5.5 arrive next week in Path of Exile 2, on September 4 PDT. Patch notes will be made available soon." — pathofexile.com forum 3999865
When does The Forbidden Rites (0.5.5) release?
September 4 PDT. GGG announced it directly at the end of the August 27 GGG Live broadcast and confirmed it in the official press release the same day. That puts the launch exactly one week after the reveal — a fast turnaround typical of GGG's event leagues.
Patch notes weren't published at reveal; GGG says they're coming "soon," almost certainly in the day or two before launch. Expect the usual pre-launch cadence: full notes, then a short server-restart window on September 4.
For context, this lands squarely between two bigger dates on the PoE2 calendar: the Gamescom Duelist reveal (Aug 25) and the December 11 1.0 launch. The Forbidden Rites is the bridge — a way to test 0.5.5 systems live before they get folded into the full release.
What is the Forbidden Rites event league?
The theme is Ritual, everywhere. GGG's framing: the King in the Mists and his followers have spread their influence across Wraeclast, with the Nameless performing dark rituals across the land.
Concretely, three things change for how you play the league:
- Ritual sites appear in every campaign area. After you clear the enemies guarding an effigy, you activate it to resurrect those foes and fight them again — while dangerous plagues threaten the Ritual site. It's the Ritual mechanic pulled forward from endgame into the whole leveling experience.
- Tribute is now individual. Defeated monsters generate Tribute, and — this is the quality-of-life headline — party members each earn their own and spend it on the rewards they want.
- Unique Ritual Effigy clusters on the World Map grant Unique rewards, giving you dedicated nodes to chase for chase items.
Verbatim (GGG, Aug 27): "Defeated monsters generate Tribute, where party members can now individually earn their own and spend it on rewards of their choice - so no one has to miss out."
If you've run the current Rite of the Nameless Ritual chain in Runes of Aldur, this is the same DNA — Tribute, effigies, the King in the Mists — spread across the entire campaign instead of gated behind the endgame.
The Wildwood returns
Longtime PoE players will recognize this one. Ritual encounters continue into the endgame, and with them comes a returning mechanic:
- Acquire a Sacred Bloom through Ritual, then use it to add a Wildwood entrance to an Endgame Map.
- Inside the Wildwood you have limited time to follow trails and gather three types of Wisps: Primal, Vivid, and Wild.
- Release them into the map and they empower monsters: Primal turns Normal monsters into Magic monsters, Vivid adds modifiers to Rare monsters, and Wild increases the rarity of items dropped.
- Empowered enemies are considerably more dangerous — the classic risk-for-reward trade. Luckier runs may find a rare fourth type: the Sacred Wisp.
This is a direct throwback to PoE1's Wildwood/Affliction mechanic, retooled for PoE2's map system. It's the league's main "juice the map, take the fight" lever.
What's changing in patch 0.5.5?
Beyond the league mechanic, 0.5.5 ships several core-game changes that will matter well past the event:
Overhauled Trial of Chaos
The Ascendancy trial gets its biggest rework yet, straight from Early Access feedback:
- You can now pause the Trial between rooms and return later to resume the run — no more losing everything to a single sitting.
- Objectives are streamlined — most are now "slay the enemies" rather than fiddly tasks like escorting a statue or implanting Soul Cores.
- New Wager Modifiers add risk-and-reward decisions that crank danger for correspondingly bigger rewards.
- Endgame Trials can now run to 30 rooms, with difficulty and rewards escalating as you push. Reaching the later rooms lets you obtain all three Trialmaster Fragments in a single run — a far more reliable path to the Trialmaster.
For anyone who's bounced off the Trial of Chaos Ascendancy grind, this is the headline change.
Faster Atlas progression
After the main questline, you can hunt down another Arbiter of Divinity key to open an even harder version of that pinnacle boss. Beat it, and your victory automatically completes all remaining sections of the Fortress, clearing the way deeper into the endgame. That's a huge time-saver for Atlas completion — it collapses hours of node-by-node clearing into one boss kill.
Abyssal Ravines
A new Atlas feature: Abyssal Ravines appear as you explore. Maps along a ravine contain Abysses, with rewards climbing as you push back the Abyssal Legion. Reach the final map on a ravine and you're guaranteed an Abyssal boss encounter.
Runes of Aldur content goes core
The event league won't run Runes of Aldur content in every area, but Farrow, Dannig, and the Expedition mechanic stay — including in Standard leagues. Expeditions can appear from Act 4 onward, and Expedition Tablets add new ways to invest (two full Expeditions in one area, two standalone Remnant encounters, or more Sentries per Expedition depending on Tablet mods). The existing Runes of Aldur league also keeps running for players finishing their endgame and challenges.

Eight new league challenges
The Forbidden Rites adds eight event challenges — things like completing campaign Rituals, defeating named Rare monsters, and reaching level 90. Finishing them awards four exclusive cosmetics plus a commemorative Hideout Statue: the Locust Footprints Effect, Locust Swarm Finisher Effect, Wildwood Guardian Pet, and Wildwood Affliction Level-up Effect.
Duelist deep dive
GGG also previewed the Duelist — first shown at Gamescom Cologne 2026 and ships with 1.0 on December 11, not with this event league. His kit is stance-based and combo-driven:
- Ready Stance can upgrade to Sand Stance, firing huge swirling sand discs via Sand Scour, followed by Perforate — a triple stab through a drill that bleeds enemies dry.
- Bloodied Blade enters Blood Stance: paired with the Default Attack it unleashes a blood wave that causes bleed, or creates mini blood novas with Perforate.
GGG's framing is that his skills "flow naturally into one another" rather than following a rigid attack sequence. He's the game's first sword-wielding class.
What The Forbidden Rites means for the economy
This is the part that matters if you buy, sell, or trade currency. An event league starts a brand-new, separate economy. At launch, nobody has stockpiles — which means:
- Currency ratios reset. On the current Runes of Aldur league, 1 Divine is ~354 Exalted and the Mirror sits near 5,076 Divine (poe2scout, Aug 27). On a fresh economy, the Divine-to-Exalted ratio snaps back toward parity, then inflates over the month as Exalted floods the market. Early Divines are worth the most Exalted they'll ever be.
- Everyone re-levels. A fresh economy means a fresh character and a fresh campaign — the poverty phase everyone hits in week one is back for the whole player base.
- Chase items spike then fall. Unique Ritual Effigy rewards and Wildwood-juiced drops will be expensive on day one and deflate as supply catches up.

FAQ
When does PoE2 The Forbidden Rites (0.5.5) release? September 4 PDT — one week after the August 27 GGG Live reveal. Full patch notes are coming "soon" before launch, per GGG's press release.
Is The Forbidden Rites a wipe or does it delete my characters? It's not a wipe. It's a temporary one-month event league with its own fresh, separate economy and new characters. Your existing Runes of Aldur characters and league keep running exactly as they are, and GGG confirmed that league continues for players finishing their endgame and challenges.
Is this the PoE2 1.0 launch? No. 1.0 — the full free-to-play release with the Duelist class and Acts 5 and 6 — is still December 11, 2026 (PST). The Forbidden Rites is the transition event league before 1.0.
Do I have to start a new character for the event league? Yes. Like every PoE event league, The Forbidden Rites runs on its own fresh economy, so you begin a new character on that league to participate. When it ends, characters typically migrate to Standard.
What's the biggest change in patch 0.5.5? The Trial of Chaos overhaul — you can pause and resume runs between rooms, objectives are streamlined to mostly slaying enemies, new Wager Modifiers add risk/reward, and endgame Trials extend to 30 rooms where you can grab all three Trialmaster Fragments in one run.
Should I buy currency for the Forbidden Rites? A fresh economy makes early Divines worth the most Exalted they'll ever be, and everyone restarts from zero — so a starter stack lets you gear and craft while the rest of the ladder is still farming its first orbs. Trade safely and check live rates before you buy.
