What's in the Bag? — quick answer

"What's in the Bag?" is a Fence task in Escape from Tarkov Season 1 (patch 1.1.5.0). To complete it you locate and obtain a Briefcase with documents — a quest item that drops off Black Division fighters, most reliably on Terminal and the Icebreaker (Lighthouse) area — then hand it over to Fence without opening it. There is no kill count and no map lock: the whole task is a loot-and-deliver against a low drop rate, so plan for several runs rather than one lucky body.

The trap that's costing people the turn-in right now: the same Briefcase with documents shows up as a survey reward and inside the Battle Pass loop, and if you crack it open for the Battle Pass documents it is consumed — you can't hand an opened case to Fence. Read that line twice before you loot one.

Wipe note: All numbers below are for the current Season 1 wipe, patch 1.1.5.0 (the Lighthouse/Icebreaker rework build). Tarkov resets trader unlocks and quest chains every season, so verify against the in-game task screen if you're reading this in a later wipe.

What is the "Briefcase with documents"?

Briefcase quest item shown in an Escape from Tarkov interface

The Briefcase with documents is a quest item — it lives in the raid-item pool, not the flea market, so you can only get it in-raid. On the Fence briefing he's blunt about it:

"A briefcase with documents. Ordinary looking thing — except two men have already failed to come back for it. Find it, bring it straight to me, and do not leaf through it on the way." — Fence, in-game task briefing

That last clause is the whole quest. The case is openable, and opening it rolls random Battle Pass documents — genuinely useful if you're grinding document turn-ins. But an opened case no longer counts for What's in the Bag?. One player on r/EscapefromTarkov put the mistake plainly: "This survey reward bailed me out — I had already opened the other 2 briefcases they give you before I knew you needed them." If you're chasing the quest, save the case, don't open it.

Where does the Briefcase with documents drop?

USEC operators approaching the Icebreaker on Lighthouse in Escape from Tarkov

It is not a floor-loot spawn you can memorize. It drops from Black Division (BD) fighters — the Season 1 faction added with the Black Division content. That means your farm is wherever BD spawn in numbers:

LocationBD densityNotes
TerminalHighThe core Season 1 BD map; heaviest, most consistent BD presence. Best first stop.
Icebreaker (Lighthouse)HighWedge's retinue + BD operatives spawn here after the 1.1.5.0 Lighthouse rework.
Streets of TarkovMedium–HighBD roam in groups; multiple players report frequent drops here.
ShorelineMediumConfirmed drops off BD, less dense than Terminal.
LabsLow–MediumBD appear, but drop reports are inconsistent — not a reliable farm.

Best route: run Terminal first (highest BD count, and you're likely questing there already — see the Terminal map and extract guide), and treat Icebreaker as your second farm since you'll be there for other Season 1 objectives anyway.

The drop rate is the real objective

There is no polite way to say it: the drop chance is low and streaky. This is the single most-repeated complaint from players actively farming it — "Killed so many BDs and still only 1. So frustrating," and, on the harder end, "On Labs I killed ~80 BD for the 3 SSDs." Different item, same farm and same pain: BD drops are RNG-gated, so:

  • Kill every BD you can on Terminal/Icebreaker — don't cherry-pick.
  • Loot the body fully. The briefcase sits in their gear like any other drop; a rushed loot on a hot body is how you leave it behind.
  • Bank spares. If you pull a second Briefcase with documents, keep it — you'll want it for the document turn-ins even after the quest is done.

Two things stack the odds in your favour without changing the RNG. First, go where BD spawn in the largest packs. The value of Terminal isn't a higher per-kill chance, it's raw volume — more bodies per raid means more rolls per raid, and that's the entire game with a low drop rate. Second, bring the loadout to win those fights. BD in Season 1 hit hard, so a rat kit that survives but can't push contested bodies leaves the case on a corpse you never reach. If you're re-kitting between attrition raids, keeping a stack of Tarkov roubles on hand so you never skip a run for lack of gear is the difference between three farm raids a night and one.

Shortcut for the survey-reward players

If BSG hands you a Briefcase with documents as a survey/event reward while the quest is active, that reward case counts — it is the same item. Bank it, hand it straight to Fence, and you've skipped the BD farm entirely for that turn-in. This is exactly the situation catching people out right now: they receive the survey case, open it for the Battle Pass documents on reflex, and only afterwards realise it was the fastest possible completion of What's in the Bag? Check your open task list before you open any briefcase this patch.

Step-by-step: completing What's in the Bag?

  • Unlock the task. It's a Fence task in the Season 1 chain. If Fence isn't offering it, work your Fence reputation and clear the prerequisite tasks first.
  • Load Terminal (or Icebreaker). Kit for BD fights, not a rat run — you're here to kill, not hide.
  • Hunt Black Division. Engage BD squads, kill, and fully loot each body for the Briefcase with documents.
  • Do NOT open the case. The moment it's in your bag, it's turn-in fuel, not loot to crack.
  • Extract it out. It's a quest item, so it survives death like other quest items — but you still need to physically extract to bank it in stash. Learn your Terminal extracts.
  • Hand it to Fence. Return to Fence, hand over the Briefcase with documents, done. His sign-off: "You did not read it, did you? Good. The less you know, the longer you walk around."

Where this sits in the Season 1 grind

What's in the Bag? is a small cog in the wider Season 1 Fence/Black Division questline, and it's worth doing early because you'll be farming the same BD for other objectives. If you're mapping your priorities, line it up with the most profitable early Season 1 quests and the broader Season 1 quest/task rework so a single Terminal run is knocking out three tasks, not one.

A quick reality check on time cost: BD farming is XP- and gear-intensive, and BSG reduced the XP you get for eliminating Wedge, his squad, and Black Division operatives on Icebreaker in 1.1.5.0 — so the "grind and it'll come" math got slightly worse this patch. If the RNG is eating your evenings, that's exactly the kind of turn-in worth handing to a Tarkov quest & Kappa boost so you skip the drop-rate lottery and keep progressing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Briefcase with documents drop in Tarkov? It's not a fixed floor-loot spawn — it drops from Black Division fighters. Farm them where they're densest: Terminal and the Icebreaker (Lighthouse) area first, with Streets and Shoreline as backups. Every BD you kill is a roll at the case, so kill and loot as many as you can.

Should I open the Briefcase with documents? No — not if you still need "What's in the Bag?" Opening it consumes the case (it rolls random Battle Pass documents) and an opened case can't be handed to Fence. Only open spare copies you pull after the quest is complete, or ones you get purely for document turn-ins.

Is What's in the Bag? a Kappa requirement? As of Season 1 (1.1.5.0) it is a standard Fence task, not flagged as a Kappa-required quest on current trackers — but the Season 1 Collector/Kappa list shifts patch to patch, so confirm against the live Collector rework Kappa requirements before you skip anything.

Can I buy the Briefcase with documents on the flea market? No. It's a quest item, so it's locked out of the flea market and can only be obtained in-raid off Black Division. The only shortcut is farming BD yourself or having the task completed for you.

Why can't I find a Briefcase after killing loads of Black Division? The drop rate is low and streaky by design — players regularly report killing dozens of BD for a single case. Fully loot every body (it's easy to rush past on a hot corpse), run high-density BD maps like Terminal, and treat it as a multi-raid farm rather than a one-and-done.

Does the Briefcase survive death like other quest items? It behaves as a quest item, but you still have to extract to bank it in your stash — dying mid-raid means starting the farm over. Have your Terminal or Lighthouse extract picked before you go looking for BD.
