TBC Anniversary Phase 3 Loot Priority: Black Temple & Hyjal Drops Ranked (and the Epic Gems Worth Your Gold)

Phase 3 is roughly 24 hours old. Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal opened on August 27, 2026 at 3:00 pm PDT, and every raid on the Anniversary realms is making the same mistake: treating fourteen new bosses as fourteen equally exciting loot piñatas. Some Phase 3 rewards are enormous and cost almost nothing. Some cost a fortune in DKP or gold and move your parse by a rounding error.

This is the loot priority ranking — what to chase first in BT and Hyjal, what to spend DKP on, and which epic gems are worth the launch-week premium. If you want the raw "where do gems come from" breakdown, we covered that in the Phase 3 epic gems guide; this one is about order of operations.

Quick answer: The highest-value Phase 3 rewards are not raid drops at all — they are the Ashtongue Talisman class trinket (29g from Okuno at Exalted with the Ashtongue Deathsworn) and your Band of the Eternal ring from Scale of the Sands, both of which cost reputation instead of DKP. After that: Illidan's weapons, then Tier 6 tokens (helm from Archimonde, gloves from Azgalor, shoulders from Mother Shahraz, legs from the Illidari Council, chest from Illidan), then trinkets, then everything else. Epic gems are last — they are only a +2 primary stat upgrade per socket over your Phase 2 rare gems, the orange/green/purple cuts are locked behind Honored with Scale of the Sands so they physically cannot exist in week one, and launch-week auction house prices are a scarcity tax you do not have to pay.

What actually changed when Phase 3 went live?

Blizzard flipped the switch on schedule (news.blizzard.com).

  • Black Temple — level 70, Shadowmoon Valley, 9 bosses: High Warlord Naj'entus, Supremus, Shade of Akama, Teron Gorefiend, Gurtogg Bloodboil, Reliquary of Souls, Mother Shahraz, the Illidari Council, and Illidan Stormrage. Raid reputation: Ashtongue Deathsworn.
  • The Battle for Mount Hyjal — level 70, Caverns of Time in Tanaris, 5 bosses: Rage Winterchill, Anetheron, Kaz'rogal, Azgalor, Archimonde. Raid reputation: Scale of the Sands.
  • Netherwing dailies, epic gems, and Tier 6.
  • Arena Season 3 is not live yet — Blizzard dates it to September 1 with the regional resets. This is a pure PvE week.

Both raids are still attunement-gated — Hyjal needs "The Vials of Eternity", BT needs the Medallion of Karabor chain. If you are locked out, see the Phase 3 attunement checklist.

One housekeeping note, because it changes how loot reaches you: GDKP is banned on Anniversary realms in NA and EU. You distribute Phase 3 loot by DKP, loot council or soft-res — not by bidding gold on drops. Selling services for in-game gold through the `/join Services` channel is still allowed. Plan around a DKP sheet, not an auction pot.

How should you rank Phase 3 loot priority?

On three questions, in order: how big is the upgrade, how contested is it, and what does it cost you. A modest upgrade that costs zero DKP outranks a big one that costs your whole bank — you can have both, just not in the same week.

Which Phase 3 loot is S-tier?

The Ashtongue Talisman — the best item in the phase that nobody bids on

Every class gets a unique trinket from Okuno, the Ashtongue Deathsworn quartermaster who stands in the main room of Black Temple immediately past Supremus. There are nine of them — Talisman of Valor, Vision, Equilibrium, Zeal, Acumen, Insight, Lethality, Shadows and Swiftness — and each one costs 29 gold at Exalted (icy-veins.com).

Twenty-nine gold, for a trinket that is genuinely BiS for several specs. The catch is the rep: roughly 7,700 Ashtongue reputation per full Black Temple clear, and Neutral to Exalted is 42,000 — about five to six clears, fewer once your attunement rep counts. That is a month of raiding, which is why you start in week one, not week five. Kill the trash; do not skip packs to save twenty minutes.

The same vendor sells Shadow Resistance patterns for 8 gold each at Friendly and Honored — Soulguard, Redeemed Soul and Shackled Souls pieces. Not glamorous, but Mother Shahraz's Fatal Attraction is a hard gear check your raid hits in week two or three.

Band of the Eternal — the free ring you get exactly one shot at

Completing "The Vials of Eternity" puts you at Friendly with Scale of the Sands and unlocks a ring quest chain in the Caverns of Time. There are four paths — Band of the Eternal Champion (physical DPS), Band of the Eternal Sage (caster DPS), Band of the Eternal Restorer (healer) and Band of the Eternal Defender (tank) — and the ring upgrades at each reputation rank as you climb toward Exalted (icy-veins.com, warcrafttavern.com).

Pick carefully. You commit to one path and you are stuck with it for a very long time — the community consensus is that you cannot switch until Exalted, if at all. Hybrid specs that flip between healing and DPS on raid night should choose for their raid role, not their questing spec. This is the single most common irreversible mistake of Phase 3 week one.

Hyjal rep comes fast, which is why this ring is S-tier: trash mobs give 12 rep, Frost Wyrms give 60, the first four bosses give 375 each, and Archimonde gives 1,500. A full clear is around 3,000 rep from bosses alone before trash — so Friendly to Honored (6,000) is roughly two lockouts, and Revered is a month or more of weekly lockouts.

Illidan's loot table is the reason the raid exists

Illidan Stormrage drops more meaningful gear than any other boss in the phase — both Warglaives of Azzinoth, the Bulwark of Azzinoth shield, Cursed Vision of Sargeras, Zhar'doom, Greatstaff of the Devourer, Black Bow of the Betrayer, Crystal Spire of Karabor, Shard of Azzinoth, Memento of Tyrande, The Skull of Gul'dan, and the Tier 6 chest token.

Sort out your guild's legendary policy before your first Illidan pull, not during the loot call. We wrote up the actual numbers and how guilds handle the pair in the Warglaives of Azzinoth drop rate guide. The rest of that table is where your DKP should go — a weapon upgrade at this tier outweighs almost any armour slot.

What should you spend DKP on first in Black Temple?

Tier 6 tokens, in this order — and the order is dictated by which boss you can reliably kill, not by set-bonus theorycraft.

T6 slotBossRaid
HelmArchimondeMount Hyjal
GlovesAzgalorMount Hyjal
ShouldersMother ShahrazBlack Temple
LegsThe Illidari CouncilBlack Temple
ChestIllidan StormrageBlack Temple

All five Tier 6 slots are obtainable this phase, which is unusual — most tiers dribble out. Tokens are redeemed at Tydormu near the Mount Hyjal entrance inside the Caverns of Time.

Archimonde at the Battle for Mount Hyjal, the final boss who drops the Tier 6 helm token and 1,500 Scale of the Sands reputation.

The practical read: Hyjal's two tokens are the cheapest set pieces in the game right now. Hyjal is the softer of the two raids, Azgalor is boss four of five, and plenty of guilds will clear Hyjal weeks before they see Mother Shahraz die. Bank DKP for Hyjal helm and gloves first, get your 2-piece online, and treat the BT tokens as a progression reward rather than a plan.

One non-Illidan drop outranks all of them for a single role: Madness of the Betrayer, which drops from the Illidari Council (warcraft.wiki.gg). It is the trinket physical DPS have been waiting a phase for. If you are a rogue, a fury warrior, a cat druid or an enhancement shaman, that is your DKP target — ahead of any tier piece.

Are epic gems worth it in Phase 3?

Here is the part everyone gets backwards, and it is worth real gold to get right.

Blizzard's own wording on the source is unambiguous: "Earn epic gems through mining in the Battle for Mount Hyjal with a Mining skill of 375, or discover them as rare drops within the Black Temple. Looking to enhance your gear with epic gems? Purchase Jewelcrafting Designs from Indormi, Keeper of Ancient Gem Lore, inside the Battle for Mount Hyjal raid instance." (news.blizzard.com)

Every word of that is a bottleneck: raw gems are raid-gated, the cuts are rep-gated, and the stat gain is small.

Two Strength per socket. Across ten sockets that is twenty Strength — real, but not a tier upgrade, and the last thing holding your raid back in week one.

Which epic gem cuts can you actually get right now?

This is the detail almost nobody has clocked. Indormi's designs are gated by Scale of the Sands reputation, and the colours unlock in stages (icy-veins.com):

  • Friendly (available now, 6g per design): Crimson Spinel (red) — Bold, Bright, Delicate, Runed, Subtle, Teardrop; Lionseye (yellow) — Brilliant, Gleaming, Smooth; Empyrean Sapphire (blue) — Lustrous, Solid, Sparkling.
  • Honored (roughly two Hyjal clears away): Pyrestone (orange), Seaspray Emerald (green), Shadowsong Amethyst (purple), plus Thick Lionseye.
  • Revered (about a month of lockouts): Rigid Lionseye, Wicked Pyrestone, Enduring Seaspray Emerald, Royal Shadowsong Amethyst.

Read that again if you are about to spend gold: orange, green and purple epic gems cannot yet exist on your realm's auction house, because no jewelcrafter has hit Honored with Scale of the Sands yet. If someone is advertising them, they are advertising a promise. The only epic cuts available on day one are red, yellow and blue — and red is by far the deepest list.

So the correct gem priority is: fill your red sockets first with the day-one Crimson Spinel cuts (biggest list, cheapest supply, and red is where your primary stat lives), leave yellow and blue on rare gems unless you are chasing a socket bonus, and simply wait on orange/green/purple until Honored designs land in week two or three. Your meta gem does not change.

Why are epic gems so expensive right now — and what should you pay?

Supply, not demand. Raw gems enter the economy through the handful of 375-Mining players who hold a Hyjal raid spot, plus rare drops inside Black Temple, and both raids are attunement-locked on a weekly lockout. There is no farming route, no vendor and no badge conversion. The buyable Sunwell epic gems older players remember arrive with patch 2.4 / Phase 4, which Blizzard has only dated as an Autumn 2026 window.

That produces the classic fresh-tier curve: silly opening listings, a steady slide as more guilds clear Hyjal, a floor once jewelcrafters hit Revered. Be honest about the numbers, though — no cross-realm price tracker has settled Phase 3 data yet, and gem prices vary enormously by realm, faction and day. Anyone quoting a precise global price for a Crimson Spinel this week is guessing.

What you can control is the order you spend in:

  • Consumables and repairs first. Flasks, potions and food for two raid nights a week dwarf gem value in actual raid output.
  • Enchants on new tier pieces second. A missing weapon enchant costs you more than a whole gem tier.
  • The 29g Ashtongue Talisman and 8g Shadow Resistance patterns third. Cheapest DPS and survivability in the phase, by a mile.
  • Red epic gems fourth, and only for slots you are confident you are keeping.
  • Everything else after the market cools.

If your reserve cannot cover steps 1–3 comfortably, you do not have a gem problem, you have a bankroll problem — and week one of a new tier is the worst time to discover it. Repair bills, fresh-tier flask prices and the last stretch of epic flying all land at once.

What Phase 3 loot should you deprioritise?

  • Off-set BT pieces for slots you will replace. Phase 3 is deep and Zul'Aman follows in the Autumn window — do not burn a DKP pile on a mid-raid ring you drop in six weeks.
  • A full regem before your set is stable. Gem the tier tokens and the weapons; leave the rest on rare gems.
  • Blue and yellow epic cuts, for now. The socket-bonus maths often favours a rare gem you already own.
  • Second-best trinkets. These are the most contested items in BT; if you are not the top DKP holder, spend on tier and take the trinket later.
  • Anything Sunwell. It is not live. Neither is Zul'Aman. Both remain Autumn 2026 windows with no confirmed dates.

The through-line: the cheapest upgrades in Phase 3 are bought with reputation, not DKP or gold. Rep is the resource nobody bids on and everybody forgets to farm in week one — the players counting Ashtongue and Scale of the Sands rep from day one will out-gear the ones who dropped 2,000g on gems.

For where the phase's power sits by spec, see our Phase 3 DPS rankings; if you are weighing a carry to get through the door, the Black Temple carry economics breakdown has the numbers.

FAQ

What should I spend DKP on first in Black Temple? Weapons, then Tier 6 tokens. Illidan's weapon table is the biggest single upgrade in the phase, and among tier pieces the Mount Hyjal tokens (helm from Archimonde, gloves from Azgalor) are the cheapest to obtain because Hyjal is the softer raid. Physical DPS should slot Madness of the Betrayer from the Illidari Council above any tier piece.

Are epic gems worth it in TBC Anniversary Phase 3? Eventually yes, immediately no. Epic gems are roughly a +2 primary stat step over the Phase 2 rare gems (for example Bold Crimson Spinel at +10 Strength versus Bold Living Ruby at +8). That is real over ten sockets but it is the lowest-value gold you can spend during launch week, when supply is raid-gated and prices are at their peak. Gem your red sockets, wait on the rest.

Which epic gems can I buy in the first week of Phase 3? Only red, yellow and blue cuts. Indormi's Crimson Spinel, Lionseye and Empyrean Sapphire designs are available at Friendly with Scale of the Sands, which you reach by completing the Hyjal attunement. Pyrestone (orange), Seaspray Emerald (green) and Shadowsong Amethyst (purple) designs require Honored, so those cuts realistically appear a week or two into the phase.

How long does it take to get the Ashtongue Talisman? You need Exalted with the Ashtongue Deathsworn, which is 42,000 reputation from Neutral. A full Black Temple clear grants roughly 7,700 rep depending on how much trash you kill, so plan on about five to six clears — fewer if you banked rep from the Black Temple attunement questline. The trinket itself costs only 29 gold from Okuno.

Which Band of the Eternal ring should I choose? Choose for your raid role, not your levelling spec: Champion for physical DPS, Sage for caster DPS, Restorer for healers, Defender for tanks. The choice is effectively locked once made, and the ring upgrades at each Scale of the Sands reputation rank, so a wrong pick follows you for the whole phase.

Can I buy Phase 3 loot in a GDKP run? No. GDKP is banned on TBC Anniversary realms in both NA and EU under Blizzard policy, alongside RMT and organised cross-realm boosting communities. Guilds distribute Phase 3 loot through DKP, loot council or soft-reserve. Selling raid services for in-game gold through the `/join Services` channel remains allowed.
