Updated November 8, 2026. Applies to Valheim 1.0, patch 1.0.21. Drop rates, recipes and loot tables come from the community Valheim Wiki. We checked every Iron Gate patch post on Steam from the 1.0 launch up to patch 1.0.21 (October 28, 2026). None of them change Sunken Crypts, Muddy Scrap Piles, Scrap Iron or the Smelter.
Iron is the metal that runs Valheim's middle game. It builds the Swamp armor and weapons, the Forge upgrades, the Iron Pickaxe you need for silver, and a lot of later recipes too. It's also the slowest metal to farm, because there are no iron veins to mine. A post on r/valheim titled "Alright... I know it's never enough iron but... this HAS to be close, right?" had 180 upvotes and 63 comments on November 8. That's the question this guide answers: where the iron is, how fast each source pays, and how much you actually need.
Quick answer: Beat The Elder for the Swamp Key, then raid Sunken Crypts in the Swamp. Each Muddy Scrap Pile inside a crypt drops about 4.3 Scrap Iron on average, and each crypt chest about 10 Scrap Iron. Smelt it 1:1 into Iron at a Smelter (2 Coal and 30 seconds per bar). Scrap Iron can't go through a wood portal, so ship it by cart or boat. A full Iron armor set at max Forge quality (Q4) costs 165 Iron, and a practical "ready for the Mountain" kit costs about 230 Iron, or roughly 53 crypt piles.
How do you get iron in Valheim?
Almost all of your early iron comes from one place. The order is always the same:
- Beat The Elder in the Black Forest. He drops the Swamp Key. Our Elder boss guide covers the Ancient Seeds and the fight.
- Find a Sunken Crypt in the Swamp. They're small stone buildings with a barred iron gate and two green torches. The wiki says they appear to spawn in clusters of four, and only deep enough inside a Swamp.
- Open the gate with the Swamp Key in your inventory. The key isn't used up.
- Mine the Muddy Scrap Piles inside with any pickaxe, and loot the chests.
- Haul the Scrap Iron home without a portal and smelt it at a Smelter.
The Swamp Key has one rule that trips people up. The wiki's Swamp Key page puts it plainly: "It must be in the player's inventory the first time each crypt gate is opened, but is no longer needed to re-enter the same crypt. It can be used an unlimited amount of times." So one key, kept on one player, opens every crypt in the world. The key itself weighs 0.1 and can go through portals.
How much iron does a Sunken Crypt give?
There's no fixed number per crypt, because the rooms are generated. What is fixed is the drop rate of the two things inside: scrap piles and chests.
| Source | What it drops | Iron per source (average) |
|---|---|---|
| Muddy Scrap Pile (inside a crypt) | 30 segments, each 14.29% for 1 Scrap Iron | ~4.3 Scrap Iron (+0.86 Leather Scraps, +0.86 Withered Bone) |
| Sunken Crypt Chest | 4 to 5 items; 10 to 20 Scrap Iron at 68.3% | ~10.2 Scrap Iron |
| Muddy Scrap Pile (buried outdoors in the Swamp) | 20 segments, each 29.7% for 1 Scrap Iron | ~6 Scrap Iron |
The chest figure is our own math from the wiki's loot table: a 68.3% chance of an average 15 Scrap Iron works out to about 10.2 per chest. Crypt chests also roll Ruby, Amber Pearls, Chain, Ancient Bark, Coins and a 5.28% Iron Protection Idol for the Forge of Potential.
Every scrap-pile segment has just 5 health and tool tier 0. That means the Antler Pickaxe mines them as well as the Black Metal one. You don't need better tools for iron, just patience. Our Valheim pickaxe guide compares every pickaxe.
The scrap piles don't respawn, and neither do the chests. When a crypt is empty, it stays empty. Move to the next one in the cluster.
How much iron do you need in Valheim?
We summed the Iron in every recipe and upgrade from the wiki's item pages on patch 1.0.21, such as Iron Armor and the Iron Sword. "Max" means quality 4 for armor and weapons and quality 3 for shields, the highest normal Forge upgrades allow. The Forge of Potential can push past that, but it isn't counted here.
| Item | Iron to craft (Q1) | Iron to reach max quality |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Helmet | 20 | 55 |
| Iron Scale Mail | 20 | 55 |
| Iron Greaves | 20 | 55 |
| Full Iron armor set | 60 | 165 |
| Iron Sword | 20 | 90 |
| Iron Mace | 20 | 90 |
| Iron Axe | 20 | 90 |
| Iron Atgeir | 30 | 135 |
| Iron Sledge | 30 | 135 |
| Battleaxe | 35 | 140 |
| Huntsman Bow | 20 | 90 |
| Ancient Bark Spear | 10 | 45 |
| Iron Pickaxe | 20 | 90 |
| Banded Shield | 8 | 20 |
| Iron Buckler | 10 | 25 |
| Iron Tower Shield | 10 | 25 |
| Serpent Scale Shield | 4 | 10 |
| All 16 items above | 297 | 1,150 |
Upgrades are where iron disappears. A 20-Iron weapon like the Iron Sword costs 70 more to max, because the upgrade steps cost 10, 20 and 40. The armor steps are cheaper at 5, 10 and 20 per piece.
You also need Iron for things that aren't gear. The Smith's Anvil (20 Iron) and Forge Toolrack (15 Iron) are the two Forge upgrades that cost Iron. Higher Forge levels unlock higher upgrade levels, so budget 35 Iron for them first. The Stonecutter needs 2 Iron, the Iron Cooking Station 3, a Reinforced Chest 2, and the Blast Furnace 10 later on. The two Swamp trinkets, the Iron Brooch and Nimble Anklet, cost 5 Iron each. Our workbench and forge upgrades guide lists every Forge level.
How much iron for a realistic kit?
Nobody crafts all 16 items. These are the three budgets most players actually hit, with the crypt work behind them at 4.3 Scrap Iron per pile:
| Goal | What it includes | Iron | Crypt scrap piles (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter iron kit | Anvil + Toolrack, Iron Pickaxe at Q1, full armor at Q1, one 20-Iron weapon at Q1, Banded Shield at Q1 | 143 | ~33 |
| Ready for Bonemass and the Mountain | Anvil + Toolrack, Iron Pickaxe at Q1, armor at Q3, one 20-Iron weapon at Q3, Banded Shield at Q3 | 230 | ~53 |
| Maxed Swamp loadout | Anvil + Toolrack, Iron Pickaxe at Q1, armor at Q4, one 20-Iron weapon at Q4, Banded Shield at Q3 | 330 | ~77 |
Each crypt chest you find takes two to three piles off those numbers.
How do you smelt Scrap Iron?
Scrap Iron smelts 1 to 1 into Iron at a Smelter, the same station you use for copper and tin. Each bar takes 30 seconds and burns 2 Coal. A Smelter holds 10 ore and 20 Coal at a time.
That makes the coal bill easy to plan. The 230-Iron "ready for the Mountain" kit needs 460 Coal and about 115 minutes of smelting in one Smelter. Two Smelters side by side cut that to under an hour. Our smelter and blast furnace guide covers Charcoal Kiln ratios and setup.
Can you take iron through a portal in Valheim?
Not through a normal wood Portal. Scrap Iron, Iron Ore and Iron bars are all metals, and metals block the standard portal. You have three ways around that:
- Carry it the slow way. Scrap Iron weighs 10 per piece and stacks to 30, so a single stack weighs 300, which is your whole base carry weight. A Cart or a Karve is the normal answer for a crypt run.
- Turn it into Iron Nails first. Iron Nails are made at the Forge, 10 nails for each Iron bar, and they can go through portals. This only helps if you're building with them at the other end.
- Use a Portal–Stone later. The Ashlands-era stone portal carries metals. So does the "Portal items" world modifier if you turn it on in your world settings. Our Valheim portals guide explains both.
The usual pattern is to build a small outpost next to a crypt cluster with a Smelter, a Charcoal Kiln and a portal. Smelt there, then sail the bars home once. Smelting doesn't lighten the load, though: an Iron bar weighs 12, two more than the Scrap Iron it came from.
How do you get iron without the Swamp Key?
You can, but it's slow. These are the pre-Elder sources:
- Oozers. These big Swamp blobs spawn at night and sometimes in front of a crypt. The wiki puts their Scrap Iron drop at around 30%. It even calls this route "generally not a viable strategy" because Oozers are rare and iron gear is expensive.
- Giant Herring. Catching one with a Fishing Rod can also give Iron Ore, which smelts like Scrap Iron. Giant Herring live just off the Swamp coast, and their special bait is Sticky Bait. Our fishing guide has the bait recipe.
- Buried outdoor scrap piles. These Muddy Scrap Piles sit underground in the Swamp and give about 6 Scrap Iron each. No key is needed, and any pickaxe mines them. The wiki says they are "scarce" and often reach below the waterline. The easy way to find them is the Wishbone from Bonemass, which is too late here. Before that, you can prospect with the Stagbreaker. Slam the ground and watch the damage numbers: per the wiki's prospecting guide, a 0 that appears underground, with no rock or small fir nearby, marks a buried scrap pile. Dig down and mine it.
All three routes are slow next to a single crypt. So for nearly every world, beating The Elder is the real answer.
What else should you know before raiding a crypt?
Sunken Crypts are short and dangerous. These tips from the wiki's Sunken Crypts page save the most time:
- Bring poison resistance. Blobs spawn inside. Drink a Poison Resistance Mead or wear the Root Mask.
- Build a Campfire inside. Crypts are no-build zones, but the Campfire is allowed. It gives you the Rested buff and dries off the Wet debuff, which matters for long mining sessions.
- Watch for hidden Draugr. They can spawn inside a scrap pile and attack from within it.
- Use a two-handed mace on body piles. The AoE from the Stagbreaker or Iron Sledge hits Draugr and Body Piles through a scrap pile without breaking it.
- Don't smash the inner iron gates. Some rooms have unlocked Iron Gates. Destroying one gives you no iron, only durability loss.
- Check outside when you're done. Scrap from a pile that clips through the wall can drop outside the crypt, which floats above the Swamp floor.
- Don't hit the green torches. They can be destroyed for good.
Crypts also hold the Withered Bones that summon Bonemass and the Vegvisirs that point to his altar. Our Swamp survival guide and Bonemass guide pick up from there.
Where do you get iron later in the game?
Once you reach the Mistlands and Ashlands, iron gets much easier. You'll still need it there, because Mistlands recipes like the Carapace Breastplate, Mechanical Spring and Arbalest use Iron.
| Source | Biome | Tool needed | Yield |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dvergr viaduct pillar | Mistlands | Hammer, near a Forge and a Stonecutter | 48 Iron (already smelted), ~150 Black Marble, 8 Copper Scrap per pillar |
| Ancient Armor | Mistlands | Black Metal Pickaxe | 50% Scrap Iron per node: ~16.5 (33-node variant) or ~10 (20-node variant) |
| Ancient Sword | Mistlands | Black Metal Pickaxe | 15 nodes at 50% Scrap Iron: ~7.5 Scrap Iron |
| Wooden doors in Frost Caves | Mountain | Any weapon | Iron is a rare drop |
| Ancient Pots | Ashlands | Any weapon | 14% chance of 1 Iron |
The Dvergr viaduct is the biggest single iron source on this list. The wiki says knocking out the base of a pillar collapses the whole structure, and the Hammer can take the pieces down if you have a Forge and Stonecutter nearby. Some of each pillar sits underground, so you won't always get the full 48.
The Ancient Swords and Ancient Armor scattered across the Mistlands need a Black Metal Pickaxe, and each node gives either Scrap Iron or Copper Scrap at 50/50. Our Mistlands guide shows where they cluster.
Is there an iron vein in Valheim?
No, not naturally. The wiki's Iron Ore page says iron veins "do not naturally generate". Iron Ore exists, but on patch 1.0.21 the only normal way to get it is the Giant Herring bonus. Every other iron in the game is Scrap Iron or ready-made bars. Valheim 1.0 added two iron build pieces, the Iron Wood Beam 67° and an Iron Stack piece, but no new way to get iron. Our ores guide covers every other metal from copper to Bloodgold.
FAQ
How do you get iron early in Valheim? Beat The Elder for the Swamp Key and raid Sunken Crypts in the Swamp. Each Muddy Scrap Pile gives about 4.3 Scrap Iron and each crypt chest about 10. Before the key, you only have rare Oozer drops, Giant Herring fishing and buried Swamp scrap piles found by prospecting with the Stagbreaker.
Can you get iron without the Swamp Key? Yes, but very slowly. Oozers sometimes drop Scrap Iron, Giant Herring sometimes come with Iron Ore, and buried Swamp scrap piles can be found with Stagbreaker prospecting. The wiki calls the Oozer route "generally not a viable strategy" for a full set of iron gear.
Is the Swamp Key used up? No. It has unlimited uses. It only needs to be in your inventory the first time you open each crypt gate.
Can you teleport iron in Valheim? Not through a wood Portal. Scrap Iron, Iron Ore and Iron bars are all blocked. Iron Nails can go through, and so can metals through a Portal–Stone or on a world with the "Portal items" modifier.
How much iron do you need for full iron armor? 60 Iron to craft the three pieces and 165 Iron to upgrade all three to quality 4, the normal Forge maximum.
What pickaxe do you need for Scrap Iron? Any pickaxe. Muddy Scrap Piles have tool tier 0 and 5 health per segment, so even the Antler Pickaxe works.
Do Sunken Crypts respawn? No. Scrap piles and chests in a crypt don't come back, so move on to the next crypt in the cluster once one is empty.
