Heroes are the newest power system in Clash Royale, and they are the one most players do not fully understand — how you unlock them, what a Hero actually does, and, since the August 26, 2026 patch, how their abilities now work. If you have hit Arena 5, seen the "Hero Coins" counter tick up, and wondered which Hero to spend them on first, this is the guide.
Here is exactly how Heroes work in September 2026, how much they cost, the balance change that quietly broke every old Hero guide, and how to pick your first Hero as a free-to-play or spending player — one week before Season 87 drops a brand-new Hero into the mix.
Quick answer: Heroes in September 2026
- Heroes are a feature that adds an ability to a card. A specific card placed in your Hero slot (a Champion-type slot) gains a special ability the base card does not have.
- Heroes unlock at Arena 5. The old Arena 15 gate was removed in the 2026 updates — you now get access far earlier in progression.
- Each Hero costs 200 Hero Coins, and you choose which Hero to unlock. Random Hero summons were removed in the mid-March 2026 update.
- Hero Coins are capped at 200. Any overflow past the cap converts to Gems at a 1:1 rate, so there is no point letting them sit maxed.
- The big one: since the August 26, 2026 balance patch, every Hero (and Champion) ability is single-use per deployment — you get one activation per time you place the card. The lone exception is Boss Bandit. Any older guide telling you to "use the ability again after the cooldown" is now wrong.
- Which Hero first? For most players, unlock the free seasonal Hero through its event, then save your 200 Hero Coins for a Hero that fits a deck you actually play. Hero Ice Wizard arrives with Season 87 on September 7 and is the one many players are saving for right now.
What are Heroes in Clash Royale?
A Hero is not a new card you pull from a chest, and it is not a rarity like Legendary or Champion. Supercell describes Heroes as a feature rarity: you take an existing card, slot it into your Hero slot, and it gains an ability. Hero Valkyrie, for example, is the normal Valkyrie card plus an activatable ability (Wild Whirlwind); Hero Berserker is the base troop plus Savage Survival.
Two things trip people up constantly, so get them straight:
- A Hero is a mode a card is played in, not a separate unit. You still level the base card the normal way. The Hero unlock is what lets that card carry an ability when it sits in your Hero slot.
- Heroes are not Champions, and they are not Evolutions. Champions are their own card rarity with a built-in ability. Evolutions are upgraded card variants that come out stronger after you cycle them — they have no ability button at all. Heroes bolt an ability onto a card that normally has none. If you want the full breakdown of the other special slot, see our Clash Royale Evolutions guide.
Since the March 2026 update, your deck has three special slots: 1 Evolution, 1 Hero, and 1 Wild (the Wild slot accepts either an Evolution or a Hero). So you can run one Hero in the Hero slot, or a second one in the Wild slot if you want — but you cannot flood your deck with them.
How do you unlock Heroes in Clash Royale?
Unlocking a Hero is a two-part answer: when you get access, and what it costs.
When: Arena 5. Heroes and your first Hero slot both unlock at Arena 5. This is a big change from the game's earlier design — the March 2026 update pulled the Hero requirement way down the progression track, and new players are handed their first batch of Hero Coins when they reach that arena.
Cost: 200 Hero Coins per Hero, and you pick which one. This is the part the mid-March 2026 update rewrote. Before, Heroes were random summons. Now:
- The old Hero Fragments were converted to Hero Coins at a 1:1 rate.
- Random Hero summons were removed — you spend 200 Hero Coins on the exact Hero you want.
- Hero Coins are capped at 200. Once you are holding 200, any additional Hero Coins you earn convert to Gems at 1:1. That means sitting on a maxed Hero Coin balance is a small ongoing waste — if you are capped, unlock a Hero.
Where do Hero Coins come from? Season events, Pass Royale, and various reward tracks. Many seasons also hand you a Hero for free through a limited-time event — Season 86 let players earn Hero Berserker through the Ken's C.H.A.O.S Draft event without spending Coins at all. Supercell's own August 2026 update notes put it plainly: "Unlock Hero Berserker by using Hero Coins or through her unlock event, Unleash the Beast!" When a free route exists, take it and keep your Coins for a Hero that has no free path.
The August 26 change every old Hero guide gets wrong
This is the single most important thing on this page, and it is why you should throw out any Hero guide written before late August 2026.
In the Final August Balance Changes on August 26, 2026 — the biggest balance patch Clash Royale has had in years, touching roughly 40 cards — Supercell reworked how abilities function:
Every Hero and Champion ability lost its cooldown and is now single-use per deployment. You get one ability activation each time you place the card. The only exception is Boss Bandit.
Previously, a Hero's ability was on a cooldown: activate it, wait, activate it again while the card was still alive. That is gone. Now the ability fires once, and to use it again you have to let the card die and play a fresh copy. This changes how you sequence Heroes in a push and, frankly, nerfs the ones that leaned on repeat activations.
If a YouTube deck or a written guide tells you to "pop the ability, then hit it again when it's off cooldown," it predates this patch and its advice is stale. For the full list of what else changed in that patch, see our August 2026 balance changes breakdown.
Which Hero should you pick first in September 2026?
There is no single "best Hero" answer, because a Hero is only as good as the deck it sits in. But there is a clear decision framework, and it is the one experienced players actually use.
Step 1 — grab the free seasonal Hero first. If the current season has a free Hero route (like Berserker's event in Season 86), unlock that Hero through the event and spend zero Coins. You get a Hero and keep your 200 Hero Coins for later.
Step 2 — spend your 200 Coins on a Hero that fits a deck you already play. The mistake is unlocking a flashy Hero you will never build around. A Hero only earns its slot if it slots into a win condition or role you already run. Ask "which of my decks wants an ability here?" before you ask "which Hero is strongest?"
Step 3 — if you are free-to-play, be patient and save. Because Hero Coins are capped at 200 and come slowly, F2P players effectively get one Hero pick every so often. Do not blow it on a Hero that is strong this week; pick one with staying power in a deck archetype you enjoy.
What's actually strong right now: Hero Valkyrie is a heavily-used Season 86 Hero and Hero Barbarian Barrel is another commonly picked non-default option. But the Hero most players are deliberately saving Coins for is Hero Ice Wizard, which lands with Season 87 on September 7, 2026. As one r/ClashRoyale player put it when asked which Hero to get: "probably save up for Ice Wizard if he's not free next season and you are F2P." That is sound advice — if you are close to a decision and you are F2P, waiting a week to see the Season 87 Hero costs you nothing.
⚠️ A note on tier lists: any "best Hero" ranking you see is community opinion, and it shifts every balance patch and every season. Treat rankings as a starting point, not gospel — especially right now, one patch after the single-use ability rework reshuffled which Heroes are worth running.
The current Hero roster (as of September 2026)
Supercell adds Heroes steadily — the roster grew across the January, February, and 2026 seasonal updates and keeps expanding, so this is not an exhaustive list and it will be longer by the time you read it. Heroes confirmed in 2026 include:
| Hero | Ability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hero Barbarian Barrel | Rowdy Reroll | Commonly picked non-default Hero |
| Hero Magic Archer | Triple Threat | — |
| Hero Valkyrie | Wild Whirlwind | Season 86 featured Hero, heavily used |
| Hero Berserker | Savage Survival | Season 86; earnable free via the Unleash the Beast event |
| Hero Balloon | — | — |
| Hero Ice Golem | — | Freeze-style utility Hero |
| Hero Ice Wizard | — | Season 87 — arrives September 7, 2026 |
More cards have gained Hero forms across 2026 (Wizard, Goblins, and Mega Minion among them). The takeaway is not to memorize the list — it is that you choose your Hero, so the roster size just means more options for the deck you actually run.
Hero Ice Wizard and Season 87 (September 7)
Season 87 begins Monday, September 7, 2026, and it is a big one for Hero players: it introduces Hero Ice Wizard alongside the season's headline card, the 4-Elixir Minion Giant win condition. If you have been sitting on 200 Hero Coins, this is the moment the "which Hero first" question gets a fresh answer.
A word of caution: Season 87 details are still pre-release coverage at the time of writing, not a finalized official release-notes post. The season start date and the arrival of Hero Ice Wizard are well-supported, but exact ability numbers can change before launch — do not commit a build around unreleased stats until the official Season 87 notes go live. (For context on how the competitive side changes each season, see our guide to unlocking Ranked.)
Heroes vs Champions vs Evolutions — don't mix them up
Because Clash Royale now has three special systems, it is easy to blur them. Quick reference:
- Champions — a card rarity with a built-in activatable ability. They occupy the Champion/Hero slot. You unlock them like any card.
- Heroes — a feature that gives an ability to a card that normally has none. Unlocked with 200 Hero Coins, your choice. Abilities are single-use per deployment since August 26, 2026.
- Evolutions — upgraded variants of base cards, played from the Evolution slot, that come out stronger after you cycle the card a set number of times. No ability button, no cooldown.
All three are capped by your deck's three special slots (1 Evolution, 1 Hero, 1 Wild). You are always making a choice about which power system to bring — that is the whole design.
FAQ
How do you unlock Heroes in Clash Royale? Heroes unlock at Arena 5. Once you are there, you spend 200 Hero Coins to unlock a Hero of your choice. Some seasons also give a specific Hero away free through a limited-time event, which lets you save your Coins for a different Hero.
How much does a Hero cost? 200 Hero Coins each. Hero Coins come from season events, Pass Royale, and reward tracks. They are capped at 200, and any overflow past the cap converts to Gems at 1:1 — so if you are sitting at 200, you are slowly wasting value and should unlock a Hero.
Which Hero should I pick first? Unlock any free seasonal Hero through its event first, then spend your 200 Coins on a Hero that fits a deck you already play — not just the strongest one this week. As a free-to-play player, patience wins, because Coins come slowly. Right now many players are saving for Hero Ice Wizard, arriving with Season 87 on September 7, 2026.
Do Hero abilities have a cooldown? No — not anymore. Since the August 26, 2026 balance patch, every Hero and Champion ability is single-use per deployment: one activation per time you place the card, then you must play a fresh copy to use it again. Boss Bandit is the only exception. Any guide describing an ability cooldown is out of date.
Are Heroes the same as Champions or Evolutions? No. Champions are a card rarity with a built-in ability; Heroes add an ability to a card that normally has none; Evolutions are upgraded card variants that get stronger after cycling and have no ability button. They all compete for your deck's three special slots.
Can you get Heroes for free? Sometimes. Many seasons include a free unlock event for that season's new Hero (Season 86 gave Hero Berserker through the Unleash the Beast event). Outside of those events, Heroes cost 200 Hero Coins, which you earn over time rather than buy directly.
Heroes are the most flexible power system Clash Royale has added, precisely because you choose where your Coins go. Grab the free ones, save the rest for a Hero your favorite deck actually wants, and remember the one rule that trips everyone up in September 2026: one ability activation per deployment.
