The DBD player count people quote is almost always one number: how many Steam clients have the game open right now. That number is real, but it covers one storefront out of eight platforms. This page gives you the live Steam reading, the full history behind it, and the totals Behaviour itself has published, so you can tell how many people actually play Dead by Daylight.
Quick answer (3 November 2026, 05:37 UTC): 38,348 people were playing Dead by Daylight on Steam, an early-morning UTC reading. The last 24 hours peaked at 66,676. October 2026 averaged 47,884 concurrent Steam players and peaked at 79,512. The Steam all-time record is 168,845 on Steam Charts (170,073 on SteamDB), set in June 2026. Across every platform, Behaviour says the game has passed 70 million lifetime players and averages over 1 million players a day. Live build: Patch 10.2.2a.
Data checked: 3 November 2026, from the Steam Web API, Steam Charts and Behaviour's own press releases. Applies to: Patch 10.2.2a, the last day of Haunted by Daylight 2026.
How many people are playing DBD right now?
At 05:37 UTC on 3 November 2026, Steam's own player counter API returned 38,348 for Dead by Daylight (app 381210). That is a morning snapshot: Steam Charts logged a 24-hour peak of 66,676 around it.
The time of day matters more than most trackers admit. Our own readings over the past month show the swing:
| Reading (UTC) | Steam players | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 6 Oct 2026, 05:45 | 28,947 | Morning, the day 10.2.0 went live |
| 29 Oct 2026, 15:40 | 63,010 | Afternoon, Haunted by Daylight week 3 |
| 2 Nov 2026, 10:30 | 35,748 | Morning, after a short outage |
| 3 Nov 2026, 05:37 | 38,348 | Morning, final day of Haunted by Daylight |
So a single "right now" number can sit anywhere from roughly 30,000 to over 60,000 on a normal day. If you want one figure to compare across weeks, use the monthly average, not a live snapshot.
If the number looks oddly low and you can't get into a match, check our DBD server status page first. Steam's counter tracks open clients, so it keeps counting players who are stuck on a broken connection.
What does the Steam number leave out?
Steam's counter only sees the Steam version. Behaviour's cross-play support article lists eight platforms:
- PC (Steam)
- PC (Microsoft Store)
- PC (Epic Games)
- PlayStation 4
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox One
- Xbox Series S/X
- Nintendo Switch
That leaves seven of eight platforms invisible to every Steam tracker, including two PC storefronts. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and Epic publish no public live player count for Dead by Daylight, and Behaviour does not break its own totals down by platform. Any site that gives you an exact "all platforms" live number is estimating it. Some say so openly: one tracker labels its figure as estimated "using our algorithm based on Google Trends".
The separate Dead by Daylight Mobile game, run by NetEase, is not counted by Steam and never shared the cross-play pool. Its service ended on 20 March 2025. Behaviour's older daily-player lines did fold mobile in, which is one more reason those figures don't compare with Steam data.
How you queue is covered in our DBD crossplay guide. The short version: with cross-play on, players from every platform on the same game version can land in the same match, so the Steam number is only a slice of the lobby you queue into.
What is the DBD all-time peak player count?
Dead by Daylight's Steam record is 168,845 concurrent players on Steam Charts, in June 2026. SteamDB shows 170,073 on 25 June 2026. The two sites record at different moments, so their peaks differ slightly, which is why you will see "about 170k" quoted on Reddit.
That June 2026 record was not a close call. Here are the highest monthly peaks on Steam Charts:
| Month | Steam peak | Monthly average |
|---|---|---|
| June 2026 | 168,845 | 71,077 |
| July 2026 | 121,937 | 70,813 |
| June 2025 | 120,430 | 56,490 |
| June 2021 | 105,052 | 48,769 |
| August 2025 | 104,570 | 59,522 |
| October 2021 | 100,416 | 50,161 |
June 2026 beat the previous record by 48,415 players, a jump of about 40%. June 2026 also holds the best monthly average in the game's history at 71,077. That month brought the Jason chapter on 16 June and the 10-year anniversary broadcast on 14 June. Both landed in the record month, but no tracker can tell you how much each one added.
How many people play Dead by Daylight in total?
This is where Behaviour's own numbers come in, and they need careful reading, because Behaviour's press pages still print three different totals.
| Behaviour source | Total players | Daily players |
|---|---|---|
| Behaviour games page (undated) | "more than 48 million" | "up to 2 million" |
| Game boilerplate in the 15 Sep 2026 release | "over 60 million" | "up to 2 million" |
| Fun Pimps partnership release, 24 Mar 2026 | "nearly 70 million" | not stated |
| 10th anniversary statement, June 2026 | "more than 70 million" | "over 1 million" a day |
| Charity campaigns release, 15 Sep 2026 | "70 million" | not stated |
The newest figure is the one to use: more than 70 million players since 2016. The 48 million and 60 million lines are old boilerplate that Behaviour never updated. One release from 15 September 2026 prints both "70 million" and "over 60 million" on the same page.
The anniversary statement is the most detailed one Behaviour has published. CEO Rémi Racine, as quoted by IGN on 11 June 2026:
"Initial forecasts predicted sales of around 300,000 copies. 10 years and more than 70 million players later, I'm astounded by how the game continues to reach new heights. 2025 was Dead by Daylight's most successful year so far. We welcomed over six million new players and delivered record performance."
The same statement said revenue grew by more than 50% over the previous 12 months, and called Dead by Daylight "the most played horror game in history". Note that this counts players, not copies sold. Behaviour has not published an updated sales figure.
On daily numbers, trust the newer "over 1 million players a day". The older "up to 2 million" line describes a best day, not a normal one.
Is DBD dying in 2026?
No. But the growth has stalled since August, and it's worth being honest about that.
Average concurrent Steam players by year, calculated as the mean of Steam Charts' monthly averages (2026 covers January to October only):
| Year | Average Steam players | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 20,453 | |
| 2020 | 34,161 | +67% |
| 2021 | 44,822 | +31% |
| 2022 | 36,396 | -19% |
| 2023 | 33,513 | -8% |
| 2024 | 37,159 | +11% |
| 2025 | 45,469 | +22% |
| 2026 (Jan to Oct) | 54,615 | best year on record |
Compared like for like, January to October 2026 averaged 54,615 against 45,992 for the same months of 2025, about 19% higher. Every month from January to July 2026 beat the same month a year earlier, often by a wide margin. January 2026 was up 61%.
The trend turned after the summer:
- August 2026: 57,800, down 2.9% on August 2025
- September 2026: 47,610, up 0.5% on September 2025
- October 2026: 47,884, down 7.0% on October 2025, even with a three-week Halloween event running
October 2026's peak of 79,512 also fell short of October 2025's 90,008. Haunted by Daylight 2026 ran from 13 October to 3 November, yet October averaged only 0.6% above September.
So the fair read is this: Dead by Daylight is far above where it was in 2022 to 2024, and 2026 will almost certainly be its biggest year on Steam. The summer spike has faded back to 2025 levels, though, not above them. That is a game holding a high plateau, not one that is dying.
Player habits explain some of the curve. Counts rise with chapters, collabs and modes like 2v8, and they dip in the quiet weeks between them. December is usually a soft month: December 2025 fell 18% from November.
When will the DBD player count go up again?
The next dated content is close. Behaviour's Steam listing for Dead by Daylight: Terrifier shows 24 November 2026, which would bring Art the Clown, Sienna Shaw and the Hartshorne Mall map. Our Art the Clown guide covers what the 10.3.0 PTB showed.
Before that, Behaviour's 10.2.2 notes date Lights Out: Stranger Things Edition from 5 to 12 November. Lights Out is a limited-time mode, so expect a smaller bump than a chapter. Beyond November, the confirmed items are in our DBD roadmap.
A chapter launch is the next real test, so 24 November is the date to watch. A November average above 47,080, last November's figure, would mean year-on-year growth is back.
Which DBD player count tracker should you trust?
The honest ones all start from Steam data. They differ in how they record it and what they add on top.
| Tracker | What it shows | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Web API | Live Steam clients, one number | The raw current count |
| Steam Charts | Monthly average, gain, peak since 2016 | Long-term trends |
| SteamDB | Daily charts and exact peak dates | Record days |
| "All platforms" sites | Estimates built from Steam plus assumptions | Rough guesses only |
Use Steam Charts or SteamDB for anything you plan to quote. Treat any "all platforms live" figure as a guess, because the console makers don't publish that data. If you want to see how the playerbase actually performs, Behaviour publishes official kill rates and pick rates, which tell you more about the game's health than raw counts do.
