Diablo 4 Masterworking Guide: Rank 1–25, Costs & Capstone (S14)

Diablo 4 Masterworking Guide: Rank 1–25, Costs & Capstone (S14)

Quick answer (TLDR): Masterworking upgrades your Ancestral Legendary or Unique gear at the Blacksmith using Obducite — dropped from Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes, and Kurast Undercity. Each upgrade raises an item's Quality by 1–5 ranks (random), up to a cap of 25. Every Quality rank adds +1% to all affix values and base stats for a total of +25% at max. Reaching Quality 25 unlocks a Capstone Bonus (+50% to one random affix). The single best Obducite farm in Season 14 is a Nightmare Dungeon with the Treasure Breach (goblin) sigil affix, especially rotated with a group of four goblin-sigil holders.

Diablo 4 Blacksmith at the forge — the Masterworking NPC in Season 14

Masterworking is the final lever you pull when your gear is otherwise perfect — right affixes, tempered correctly, Greater Affixes on the right stats. It is the system that turns a solid item into a max-power carry machine, and in Season 14's Death Awakening it matters more than ever: the cap is Quality 25, every rank adds a flat percentage bonus on top of Greater Affixes, and the Capstone at the top can stack an extra 50% on an already-boosted stat.

This guide covers everything for Season 14 (Patch 3.1.0–3.1.2): how the system works, exact Obducite costs by rank, the fastest farming routes ranked by efficiency, and how to target the Capstone Bonus you actually want. We also cover how Masterworking interacts with Enchanting at the Occultist and which item slots to prioritize first.

How Does Masterworking Work in Diablo 4?

Masterworking is accessed at the Blacksmith in any major town. Select the Masterworking tab, insert an Ancestral Legendary, Unique, or Mythic Unique item, and confirm the upgrade.

Three things happen with each Masterwork:

  • The item's Quality increases by a random amount between 1 and 5 ranks per upgrade attempt.
  • Every Quality rank adds +1% to the item's base damage, armor, or resistance AND +1% to every affix value — including Tempered affixes and Greater Affixes.
  • Materials are consumed — Obducite scales up with your current Quality, so late pushes cost significantly more per attempt.

Key rule: Masterworking never fails. You will always gain Quality ranks; the only variance is how many ranks you gain per attempt.

At Quality 25, you unlock a one-time final upgrade — the Capstone Bonus — which applies +50% to a random affix on the item. If that bonus lands on a low-value affix, you can spend Obducite, Neathiron, and Gold to reroll it, but you cannot undo Quality ranks.

What Items Can Be Masterworked?

Any Ancestral Legendary, Unique, or Mythic Unique item. Tempering is NOT required first — the systems are independent. If you Enchant (reroll) a Masterworked affix at the Occultist, the new affix retains the same Quality bonus.

How to Unlock Masterworking

Masterworking unlocks automatically once you find your first Obducite from endgame content. No separate quest. The moment Obducite appears in your inventory, the Blacksmith's Masterworking tab becomes available.

To reach Obducite-dropping content you need Torment difficultyNightmare Dungeons (Torment I+), Infernal Hordes, and Kurast Undercity all gate behind Torment access. If you are still leveling toward Torment, check our Season 14 Paragon leveling guide for the fastest path there.

Masterworking Ranks 1–25: What Does Each Quality Rank Do?

Each rank of Quality gives a flat +1% to every affix and base stat on the item. This adds onto Greater Affixes (which already give +50% to that specific affix) rather than replacing them.

Example: A helmet with 1,509 Armor pre-Masterworking hits 1,886 Armor at Quality 25 (1,509 × 1.25 = 1,886). Source: Maxroll.gg Masterworking Guide.

Quality RankTotal Affix BonusBase Stat BonusObducite Cost (This Upgrade, 1H/armor)
0 → 1+1%+1%~10 Obducite
5+5%+5%~25 Obducite
10+10%+10%~48 Obducite
15+15%+15%~66 Obducite
20+20%+20%~85 Obducite
24+24%+24%~100 Obducite
25 (Capstone)+25% + Capstone+25%250 Obducite

Obducite cost per rank formula (community-derived from in-game data, verified by Maxroll.gg): floor(3.75 × CurrentQuality + 10). 2H weapon costs are doubled at every rank.

Total Cost to Max One Item (Quality 0 → 25)

Reaching Quality 25 on a single 850 Item Power Legendary or Unique (costs are for 1H/armor — double for 2H weapons):

ScenarioObduciteAbstruse SigilsGold
Worst case (1 Quality per upgrade)1,366150~11.25M
Best case (3+ Quality per upgrade)49270~7.25M

For 900+ Item Power Ancestrals and Mythic Uniques, Abstruse Sigils are replaced by Forgotten Souls — approximately 275 (worst case) or 115 (best case). The Obducite and Gold costs remain the same as above.

Per the Maxroll.gg Masterworking Guide: "Each upgrade can give up to 5 Quality ranks at once, thus adding a small element of randomness in terms of how fast you get to Quality rank 25."

On lucky days you hit Q25 in eight attempts; on bad days it takes twenty. Plan Obducite budgets around the worst case.

What Is the Capstone Bonus and How Do You Reroll It?

Once your item hits Quality 25, the Capstone Bonus upgrade appears at the Blacksmith. This applies +50% to a randomly chosen affix — including Tempered affixes and Greater Affixes. If a Greater Affix already grants +50%, the Capstone stacks on top for a compounding final stat.

Cost of the initial Capstone upgrade: 250 Obducite + standard Gold and salvage materials.

Rerolling the Capstone

If the Capstone lands on a non-priority affix (e.g., Potion Capacity on a ring), reroll it:

For Ancestral items (all endgame gear):

  • 200 Obducite (400 for 2H weapons)
  • 1 Neathiron (2 for 2H weapons)
  • 10,000,000 Gold

For non-Ancestral items: 100 Obducite (200 for 2H), no Neathiron, 10M Gold — but you will rarely Masterwork non-Ancestral gear.

(Source: Maxroll.gg Masterworking Guide) You can reroll indefinitely — there is no attempt cap.

Where to get Neathiron in Season 14: Drops from World Bosses, Bartuc (Infernal Hordes), Astaroth (Escalation Dungeons), and Belial (requires a Superior Lair Key). Farm World Bosses first — they are the most accessible zero-key Neathiron source.

Where Does Obducite Drop? Best Farming Routes (Season 14, Ranked)

Obducite comes from multiple endgame activities, but efficiency varies significantly. The Season 14 ranking from highest to lowest yield per hour:

Diablo 4 Nightmare Dungeon combat — prime Obducite farming ground in Season 14

1. Nightmare Dungeon with Treasure Breach Sigil Affix (Best)

The Treasure Breach affix on a Nightmare Dungeon Sigil spawns a Goblin NMD — a special dungeon variant packed with treasure goblins that drop large quantities of Obducite, gold, and gear. In our testing across multiple Goblin NMD runs, this sigil affix consistently outpaces every other single-source Obducite method in Season 14.

Group strategy: Find three other players also holding Goblin NMD Sigils and rotate through all four in one session. Each player opens their sigil, everyone joins, and you collectively farm four goblin dungeons back-to-back. Per-hour Obducite yield from this four-player rotation is substantially higher than solo farming.

Check your Sigil Inventory for Treasure Breach as soon as a new Sigil drops — these are the ones to hold for a coordinated group session.

2. Nightmare Dungeon with Horadric Strongroom Affix

The Horadric Strongroom affix adds a bonus chest room to any Nightmare Dungeon containing concentrated Obducite. Less impactful than Treasure Breach but easy to fold into any normal NMD farming session. Always clear the Strongroom before leaving.

3. Kurast Undercity with Tribute of Refinement

At the Kurast Undercity (Kurast Docks, Kehjistan), select a Tribute of Refinement offering before starting the run. This tribute concentrates the completion chest on Masterworking materials — Obducite will be a significant share of the reward. Efficient when you are also targeting Undercity gear in the same session.

Access: Torment I+ required. Build Tributes by collecting Timebound Curios during the run.

4. Infernal Hordes (Spoils of Materials)

After clearing an Infernal Hordes run, spend Burning Aether on Spoils of Materials for a batch of Obducite, Gold, and occasional Abstruse Sigils. If you are already farming Infernal Hordes for gear, always buy at least one Spoils of Materials chest before switching to equipment chests — the Obducite adds up across sessions.

Tip: Higher-Torment Infernal Hordes yield more Aether per run, which translates to more chests and more Obducite per session.

5. General Nightmare Dungeon Clearing

Even without Treasure Breach or Strongroom sigils, Nightmare Dungeons passively drop Obducite from enemies, chests, and events throughout each run. Lower per-hour than the specific sigil affixes, but any NMD session builds your stockpile.

6. Mercenary Bartering (Supplemental)

Your Mercenaries in the Hideout can barter for a Masterworking Cache using Coiling Wards (mercenary currency). This is not a primary farm — treat it as a free daily top-up when you check mercenary reward caches.

Which Items Should You Masterwork First?

Obducite is the bottleneck in Season 14. Spend it on the items that compound your damage most.

Priority 1 — Items with Greater Affixes on your core damage stat. The Capstone Bonus amplifies one affix by 50%, and if that affix is already a Greater Affix (+50%), both bonuses apply to the same stat. A Critical Strike Damage Greater Affix that also gets Capstoned is an extreme outlier. Prioritize pieces with at least one Greater Affix in the right slot.

Priority 2 — Weapons first. Your weapon directly scales your damage output. A two-hander costs twice the Obducite per rank, but the damage return is typically the largest single gain in your build. Max the weapon before polishing rings or amulets.

Priority 3 — Skip transitional gear. If you plan to replace an item within a few sessions, do not invest 500+ Obducite into it. Wait for a piece you are confident keeping to end-season. Re-tempering a Masterworked item preserves its Quality rank — salvaging a replaced piece returns nothing.

Priority 4 — Jewelry last. Rings and amulets are strong but the per-rank absolute stat gains (All Resistance, Max Life) tend to be smaller numbers than equivalent weapon or armor improvements. Get weapon and armor slots maxed first.

Masterworking & Enchanting: How They Interact

After Masterworking, you can still Enchant (reroll) any affix at the Occultist. The new affix carries the same Quality rank bonus — +25% carries over to whatever new stat rolls in. If you Masterwork a weapon and then realize one affix is wrong, you can fix it without losing your Masterworking investment.

See our Diablo 4 Enchanting Guide for Occultist reroll costs and Veiled Crystal management in Season 14.

FAQ

What is Masterworking in Diablo 4 Season 14? Masterworking is a Blacksmith system that upgrades an item's Quality from 0 to 25, adding +1% to all affixes and base stats per rank — +25% total at cap. Reaching Quality 25 unlocks a Capstone Bonus, a permanent +50% boost to one random affix.

How much Obducite does it take to max an item in Season 14? Between 492 and 1,366 Obducite depending on RNG (each upgrade gives 1–5 Quality ranks). Budget for the worst case — roughly 1,366 Obducite plus 250 for the Capstone upgrade itself. Two-handed weapons cost double at every step.

Where does Obducite drop in Season 14? From Nightmare Dungeons (highest yield with Treasure Breach sigil affix), Kurast Undercity with Tribute of Refinement, Infernal Hordes Spoils of Materials, and Mercenary bartering. It does NOT drop from The Pit.

Can Masterworking fail or be reset in Diablo 4? Masterworking never fails — every attempt gains Quality ranks. Quality itself cannot be reset. The Capstone Bonus can be rerolled by spending 200 Obducite, 1 Neathiron, and 10 million Gold per attempt (for Ancestral items, which is all endgame gear).

What is the Capstone Bonus in Diablo 4? A final upgrade at Quality 25 that adds +50% to a randomly selected affix — including Tempered and Greater Affixes. It stacks on top of a Greater Affix's existing bonus.

Where to get Neathiron in Season 14? Neathiron drops from World Bosses, Bartuc in Infernal Hordes, Astaroth in Escalation Dungeons, and Belial (Superior Lair Key required). World Bosses are the most accessible route since they require no keys.
