FC 27 corners are worth taking again, but only if you take control in the second or two before the ball arrives. EA SPORTS FC 27 took the auto-positioning out of corner kicks: after you aim, the camera moves to the box and you get a short window to move, switch, shield or use the new Avoidance move. Skip that window and the corner usually goes nowhere, which is one reason so many players now play every corner short.
This guide covers the full EA FC 27 corner sequence with every input, a routine for scoring, a checklist for defending, and the PlayStyle mistake we keep seeing on Reddit: Aerial Fortress does not help you score headers. FC 27 is in the final days of Season 1: Ones to Watch, which EA says runs "from Thursday, 17 September 2026 to Thursday, 22 October 2026" (EA, Launch Update Pitch Notes). EA's season calendar puts the start of Season 2 on the same day (EA, FC 27 Launch Rewards). Nothing below depends on the season: none of EA's FC 27 title update notes so far list a corner change.
TLDR: FC 27 corners in 30 seconds. Aim first (left stick, plus right stick for the reticle), then the camera moves to the box and you get a short window. In that window, hold R1/RB for Avoidance to slip through the crowd and hold L2/LT to Shield once you've found space. Nobody runs to the ball for you, so time the run yourself. Clean headers are rarer than in FC 26 but more accurate when you get one. Short corners skip the window. To defend, pick your best header of the ball before the kick, mark the attacker rather than the ball, and use Avoidance yourself. PlayStyles: Dead Ball helps the taker, Precision Header helps your attacker, and Aerial Fortress only works in defensive aerial duels. Corners also pay +5 match coins each, up to +50 a game (community-documented table).

What changed with corners in FC 27?
The headline change is that the game stopped positioning your attackers for you. EA's Principal Gameplay Designer Gilliard Lopes put it plainly in the Gameplay Deep Dive (29 July 2026):
"In FC 27, players contesting for corner kicks in the box will no longer automatically move into the best position to connect with the ball. It's up to you to time the run, attack the space, and make first contact manually."
You could already control a player in the box in FC 26, which is why many players were unsure what was actually new. EA answered that in its Closed Beta Feedback Update (3 September 2026): "the main difference with corners in FC 27 is the amount of assistance you get when manually positioning your player." The game now gives you free movement and "no longer moves your player toward the expected landing position of the ball."
Four changes matter in practice:
- A control window before delivery. After you aim, "the camera will shift towards the box, giving you a brief window to control attacking players" (Deep Dive). You can move, switch players, make runs, shield or use Avoidance.
- No auto-positioning. Miss the spot and "the ball evades everyone".
- Harder headers, better headers. "Connecting with a header from crosses and corners requires greater precision, making clean headers less frequent." The trade-off: a clean header is "more accurate than in FC 26".
- Crosses go into space. The same crossing rework means "your aim and power now have a much bigger impact on where your cross lands", so it can miss everyone if it isn't placed well.
EA's gameplay team confirmed on 30 September that players were "trying out newer mechanics like the updated corner kicks" and that it "won't rush to make changes until we're confident there's an issue that needs to be addressed" (Gameplay Developer Launch Update). Title Update 1.0.4 said there were "no gameplay balance and tuning changes" (EA, 7 October). What you learn now should still hold for the rest of the season.
What are the FC 27 corner controls?
EA's Deep Dive only gives one input, Avoidance: hold R1 on PlayStation or RB on Xbox. The rest come from the game's own controls list, as transcribed by Pro Clubs HQ (updated 11 October). Check the controls screen in your own settings if you play with a custom layout.
| Action | PlayStation | Xbox | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aim the kick | Left stick | Left stick | Controls list |
| Reticle aim | Right stick | Right stick | Controls list |
| Lob cross | Square | X | Controls list |
| Pass (short corner) | Cross | A | Controls list |
| Corner tactics menu | D-pad up | D-pad up | Controls list |
| Run near post / far post | D-pad up, then left / right | D-pad up, then left / right | Controls list |
| Add / remove a player | D-pad up, then up / down | D-pad up, then up / down | Controls list |
| Shielding | Hold L2 + left stick | Hold LT + left stick | Controls list |
| Avoidance | Hold R1 + left stick | Hold RB + left stick | EA Deep Dive + controls list |
| Defending: zonal / player marking | D-pad up, then right / left | D-pad up, then right / left | Controls list |
One important exception: short corners don't get the window. EA: "After a short corner kick is taken, you will revert back to your gameplay camera of choice."
How do you score from a corner in FC 27?
Use this five-step routine. The order matters more than the delivery.
- Pick your target before the delivery. EA says height and jumping change "where and when you want to attack the ball. A taller player with strong jumping, for example, may be able to meet the ball earlier in its trajectory" (Closed Beta Feedback Update). Aim at the area that suits your best header of the ball, not the same spot every time.
- Set the runs. Use D-pad up to send runners near or far post. A near-post run pulls a marker and opens the penalty spot.
- Get free with Avoidance. When the camera moves, hold R1/RB with your target man to slip through the crowd. EA describes it as letting "any attacker or defender you control to become more evasive, moving through crowded areas without getting blocked by opposing players."
- Hold the space with Shield. Once you're in the gap, switch to L2/LT. EA's advice is to pair them: Avoidance to find the space, Shielding "to hold their position after creating space and prevent opponents from stepping in front."
- Arrive moving, not standing. EA: "A player's physical momentum also matters, so it's not only about getting to the right spot, it's also about how and when you arrive there." Start a step outside the flight path and attack it late, rather than parking under it.
A simple rule of thumb: Avoidance creates space, Shield keeps it. If you're already in space and hold Avoidance, you're giving up position you've already won.
Should you still take FC 27 corners short?
Sometimes. A short corner keeps possession and avoids the counter-attack, which is the real cost of a failed direct corner. In an r/EASportsFC thread on why nobody takes corners (20 October), one player said the counter after a cleared corner is what puts them off, because their defenders leave the opponent loads of room near the halfway line. Our view: take direct corners when you have a strong header of the ball and a Dead Ball taker, and keep two defenders back using remove player in the corner tactics menu. Play it short when your best aerial player is off the pitch or you're protecting a lead late on.
How do you defend corners in FC 27?
Defending corners got harder for the same reason attacking got better: the attacker now chooses the run, so the AI marker can be beaten before the ball is even kicked. Here's a checklist for this half.
- Pick your defender before the kick. Choose the centre-back you want to control while the taker is still aiming. Switching after the ball is in the air is an easy way to concede.
- Mark the attacker, not the ball. Watch who the opponent is controlling. That's usually the real target, and near-post runners are often decoys.
- Use Avoidance yourself. It works for defenders too. EA's wording covers "any attacker or defender you control." Use it to get goal-side of the runner instead of getting stuck behind a blocker.
- Choose a marking scheme. The corner tactics menu offers zonal marking or player marking when defending (D-pad up, then right or left, per the controls list). Zonal marking guards the spaces in the box, while player marking tracks individual runners. If one player beats you every time with late runs, switch to player marking.
- Don't drag a centre-back to the short option. A short corner is an open-play problem. Leave your aerial defender in the box.
- Look for Aerial Fortress at the back. This is where that PlayStyle actually does something (next section).
For open-play defending (jockey speed, stand-tackle range and the reduced AI tackling), see our FC 27 manual defending guide and EA's launch feedback verdicts on manual defending.
Does Aerial Fortress help you score headers in FC 27?
No, not according to EA's description. It came up repeatedly in the same r/EASportsFC corners thread: one player said they'd never got a straight answer on whether Aerial Fortress helps attacking headers, and another replied that it's for jumping and Precision Header is what makes headers accurate. EA's own wording backs that reply up.
From EA's PlayStyles: Everything You Need to Know, word for word:
| PlayStyle | Who it helps on a corner | EA's PlayStyle+ impact |
|---|---|---|
| Dead Ball | Your taker | "Set pieces are delivered with exceptional speed, curve, and accuracy. Ball trajectory preview line is at maximum length." |
| Whipped Pass | Open-play crosser | "All crosses are highly accurate, travel faster, and with more curve. Performs driven crosses with exceptional power." EA doesn't mention corners. |
| Precision Header | Your attacker | "Performs headers with greatly increased accuracy and power." |
| Aerial Fortress | Your defender | "Performs even higher jumps and has greatly increased physical presence before and during defensive aerial duels." |
The key word is defensive. EA describes Aerial Fortress as "a defensive Player who is known for dominating aerial battles in defensive situations", and nothing in the description covers attacking headers. It's the right PlayStyle for the centre-back marking the opponent's target man. For your own target, you want Precision Header, and for the taker, Dead Ball, the only PlayStyle EA ties directly to set pieces. EA also trimmed the gap between Precision Header and Precision Header+ in FC 27 by "rebalancing the boost in accuracy" (Deep Dive). For the full rebalance, see our FC 27 PlayStyles breakdown.
Can you add these PlayStyles with an Evolution?
Yes, but only to Star Performer items. Since 17 October, the Evolutions store has long-running PlayStyle+ Evos, listed on fut.gg with these prices and requirements (checked 21 October):
- Dead Ball+: 5,000 coins or 50 FC Points
- Whipped Pass+: 5,000 coins or 50 FC Points
- Precision Header+: 5,000 coins or 50 FC Points
- Aerial Fortress+: 10,000 coins or 100 FC Points
All four require the Star Performer rarity and no existing PlayStyle+, are repeatable, and run until 30 September 2027. fut.gg's eligibility list showed 6 qualifying items on 21 October, so for most clubs this is a future option, not a fix for today. We cover how Star Performer items work in our PlayStyle+ Lab and Star Performers guide. The defender upgrade costs twice as much as the attacking ones.

Are FC 27 corners worth it for coins?
They are a small but steady coin source. According to the FC 27 Match Coins table documented by FIFAUTeam, every corner in your match stats adds +5 coins to your Skill Rewards, up to 10 corners (+50). EA hasn't published this formula, so treat it as community data.
Three numbers to know from the same table:
- Corners: +5 each, max +50. That's the same ceiling as shots on target (+5 each, max 10).
- A goal is +40, so one headed goal from a corner is worth eight corners' worth of Skill Rewards.
- Skill Rewards are multiplied by the DNF multiplier, so quitting early also cuts your corner coins. Our match coins and DNF guide explains the full formula.
None of this changes how you play a match, but it does mean a team that attacks down the wings and forces corners isn't wasting its possession, even when the corners don't turn into goals.
Do corners matter in FUT Champions?
More than most players think, because the narrow formations people use in Champions leave you few other ways to score from wide areas. The 4-3-1-2 narrow meta gets the ball inside, and the crossing rework made open-play crosses less reliable. A rehearsed corner routine is one of the few ways a narrow team can score from wide. Practise the timing in Squad Battles or the Practice Arena first. EA itself suggests testing PlayStyles in the Practice Arena before using them in a real match. Then take your routine into Rivals and your FUT Champions weekend.

What hasn't EA said about FC 27 corners?
EA hasn't said how long the pre-delivery window lasts, how much Dead Ball or Precision Header changes accuracy, or whether Aerial Fortress has any effect on attacking headers. Its description only covers defensive duels, which is why we treat it as defensive only. EA's Deep Dive gives only the Avoidance input. The other inputs come from the in-game controls list as transcribed by Pro Clubs HQ. The match coin values are community-documented, and the PlayStyle+ Evo prices are from fut.gg. Check the in-game store before you spend.
FAQ
How do you use Avoidance on corners in FC 27? After you aim a direct corner and the camera moves to the box, hold R1 on PlayStation or RB on Xbox and move with the left stick. Your player can then slip through crowded areas without being blocked. Defenders can use it too.
Why don't my players attack the ball on corners in FC 27? EA removed the auto-positioning. Players in the box no longer move themselves to the landing spot, so you have to control your target, time the run and make contact yourself.
How do you defend corners in FC 27? Pick the defender you want to control before the kick, mark the attacker the opponent is controlling rather than watching the ball, use Avoidance to get goal-side, and switch between zonal and player marking in the corner tactics menu (D-pad up).
Does Aerial Fortress help you score headers in FC 27? Not according to EA. Its description limits the effect to "defensive aerial duels." For attacking headers, Precision Header is the PlayStyle EA ties to header accuracy and power.
Are headers worse in FC 27? Clean headers are less frequent because they need more precision, but EA says a clean header is more accurate than in FC 26.
Do short corners use the new system? No. EA says that after a short corner you go straight back to your normal gameplay camera, with no pre-delivery window.
