FC 27 Poor Sophia Evo: Best Goalkeepers and Why Your 81 Is Wasted

FC 27's new free goalkeeper Evolution gives every keeper +5 OVR, 3-star skills and up to three PlayStyles in four matches, but its caps are so tight that a 78 finishes almost level with an 81. EA SPORTS FC 27 released Poor Sophia on Monday 19 October at 17:00 UTC. It's a standard match-based Evolution for goalkeepers rated 81 or lower, it costs 0 coins and 0 FC Points, and it caps at 83 OVR.

FC 27 is in the last days of Season 1: Ones to Watch, which runs "from Thursday, 17 September 2026 to Thursday, 22 October 2026" (EA, Launch Update Pitch Notes). Season 2 starts the same day (EA, FC 27 Launch Rewards), and Poor Sophia runs past that reset. We pulled fut.gg's full eligible-player list for the Evo (2,142 items on 20 October) and ran every card through the upgrade table. The checks below show who gains the most, who barely gains anything, and which recommended picks are a waste.

TLDR: FC 27 Poor Sophia in 30 seconds. Free Evo for any GK rated 81 or lower with no PlayStyle+ (max 7 PlayStyles). 2 levels: play 2 matches, then win 2 (Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or higher, Rivals, Champions or Live Events). You get +5 OVR (cap 83), +6 Diving, Handling, Kicking, Reflexes, Positioning and Reactions (each capped at 80 to 84), +30 Acceleration and Sprint Speed (cap 50), 1-star to 3-star skills and Cross Claimer, Footwork and Far Throw, but each PlayStyle only lands while the card has fewer than 3. Start by Thursday 29 October, 18:00 UTC. The caps flatten everything from 78 to 81: the median 78 finishes 2 points behind the median 81 on the four shot-stopping stats, so don't use your best 81. Best results: Casey Murphy, Kamil Grabara, Moritz Nicolas, Jane Campbell, Édouard Mendy. Best value: any 78 or 79 you already own.

What is the FC 27 Poor Sophia Evolution?

Poor Sophia is a free, two-level goalkeeper Evolution. Its in-game description, reproduced on fut.gg, reads: "Poor Sophia no more! A bit more pace (don't get excited, still a keeper) and extra skill moves. Enough to nutmeg the striker, then calmly jog back to goal." (fut.gg, Poor Sophia)

The name is a nod to a real player. FUTBIN explained it within minutes of the release:

"London City Lionesses Goalkeeper, Sophia Poor, has made several TikToks questioning her FC 27 Rating, guess EA thought she deserved an upgrade." (FUTBIN on X, 19 October 2026)

Her own card is in the pool. Sophia Poor's base item is a 62 OVR keeper with no PlayStyles and a GK Speed stat of 26. After the Evo, fut.gg shows her at 67 OVR, every face stat up 6, Speed at 50, 3-star skills and all three PlayStyles. It's a joke Evo with real numbers attached.

Two things follow from the table. First, the max 0 PlayStyle+ rule shuts out any keeper with a PlayStyle+; none of the 2,142 eligible items has one. Second, the store's goalkeeper PlayStyle+ Evos (Cross Claimer+ and Far Throw+ at 5,000 coins, Footwork+, Far Reach+, Deflector+ and 1v1 Close Down+ at 10,000) are restricted to Star Performer items on fut.gg, so they can't stack on a base keeper anyway. Our PlayStyle+ Lab and Star Performers guide covers how those work.

The pool is broad: 1,055 bronze, 889 silver and 198 gold keepers, 1,930 men's and 212 women's items. All but two are base items. The other two are Team of the Week cards, one of them Konstantinos Tzolakis's 81. If a keeper you own doesn't show up, our FC 27 "player not eligible" guide covers the hidden traps.

What does Poor Sophia upgrade at each level?

Every cap works the same way: the boost is added, then cut at the cap, and a stat already above a cap keeps its value. Moritz Nicolas starts with 84 Diving and keeps 84, even though the Diving cap is 80. That rule decides which keepers come out best.

Why does an 81 rated keeper gain so little?

FC 27 Poor Sophia chart comparing median shot-stopping stats before and after the Evo for 76 to 81 rated keepers The four shot-stopping stats (Diving, Handling, Reflexes, Positioning) added together. Before the Evo the gap from 78 to 81 is 10.5 points. After it, the gap is 2. Chart: timesaver.gg from fut.gg data.

Because the caps sit just above where good keepers already are. Diving and Positioning stop at 80, Handling at 82, Reflexes at 84. A 78 has room to take most of each +6. An 81 is already near or over most caps, so it takes the overall bump and little else.

Across the whole pool:

  • 2,081 of 2,142 keepers (97%) get the full +5 OVR. Only the 61 cards rated 79 to 81 lose some of it to the 83 cap.
  • 1,872 keepers (87%) take the full +30 face-stat points across Diving, Handling, Kicking, Reflexes and Positioning.
  • The 19 keepers rated 81 gain a median of 8 face-stat points. The 26 rated 78 gain a median of 20.
  • 1,963 keepers (92%) have a GK Speed below 50, so they gain pace. The extra pace stops at 50.

The median 81 finishes at 328 on the four shot-stopping stats, against 326 for the median 78, 79 and 80. The before-and-after table:

Base OVRCardsMedian beforeMedian afterMedian after − median before
7634302322+20
7736307325+18
7826310.5326+15.5
7919315326+11
8023319326+7
8119321328+7

The last column compares the two medians, which is why it differs slightly from the per-card median gains quoted above (those also include Kicking). So the 78s through 81s all end up as near-identical 83s, give or take the few stats that started above a cap. That has a practical consequence: the Evo isn't repeatable (fut.gg lists a repeatability count of 1), so spend it on a keeper who gains the most, not on the one already in your starting XI.

Which PlayStyles will your keeper actually get?

FC 27 Poor Sophia chart showing how many eligible keepers get three, two, one or zero of the Evo's PlayStyles Every eligible keeper finishes with at least three PlayStyles, but only cards with none to start with get all of Poor Sophia's. Chart: timesaver.gg from fut.gg data.

Each PlayStyle shows a "(^3)" cap on fut.gg. It's added only if the card holds fewer than three PlayStyles at that moment, in level order: Cross Claimer at Level 1, then Footwork, then Far Throw at Level 2. A PlayStyle the card already has is skipped. We tested the order on fut.gg's evolved cards: Alexander Nübel and Rui Silva (one PlayStyle each) come out with Cross Claimer and Footwork, but no Far Throw.

Footwork is the one to care about. EA's FC 27 PlayStyles article describes it as "Exclusive foot save animations and increased performance against low trajectory shots" (EA, PlayStyles: Everything You Need to Know). Low driven finishes are among the most-discussed shots in FC 27 right now, as our FC 27 PlayStyles guide explains. EA publishes no numbers for any PlayStyle, so treat the size of the effect as unknown.

2,078 keepers finish with Footwork. 64 don't. 38 of them already hold two PlayStyles, so Cross Claimer takes the third slot; the other 26 already hold three or more without Footwork, so they get no PlayStyle at all. Ten of those 64 are gold 78+ keepers: Matz Sels, Keylor Navas and Noah Atubolu lose Footwork to Cross Claimer, while Álex Remiro and Jennifer Falk already have three PlayStyles and gain none. If Footwork matters to you, pick someone else.

The other two are smaller. Cross Claimer gives "Unique punching animations, increased hand strength and ball out speed from punches", and Far Throw gives "Unique GK throw animations and increased GK throw max distance" (same EA article).

Who are the best players for Poor Sophia?

Because the caps flatten everyone, the best results come from keepers who already beat a cap on a stat that matters, so they keep that extra stat after the Evo. "Final four" below means Diving + Handling + Reflexes + Positioning after the Evo. The cap-limited maximum for a keeper with nothing above a cap is 326. The table is a selection of the top finishers, sorted by final four.

Stats: fut.gg base items and evolved results, 20 October 2026. fut.gg lists 212 women's keepers in the same eligible pool as the men's. Rui Silva, Pauline Peyraud-Magnin and Abby Smith also finish at 329 and end with Footwork.

Moritz Nicolas is the standout value pick. He's a 79 with no PlayStyles and a GK Speed of 21, so he gains +4 OVR, all three PlayStyles and 28 Speed, and keeps the 84 Diving that's the highest of anyone in the pool after the Evo.

Best "spare keeper" picks (78 to 79, all landing at 326 to 327): Bernd Leno, Emil Audero, Lukáš Hrádecký, Kepa and Nick Pope each gain 15 to 21 face-stat points. Pope and Hrádecký finish with only 70 Kicking, which matters if you play out from the back.

Which popular picks gain the least?

Two keepers on Destructoid's widely shared "best players" list are poor uses of a one-time Evo:

  • Bart Verbruggen (81): gains 5 face-stat points and +2 OVR. His only meaningful stat upgrade is Handling (plus Cross Claimer and 3-star skills).
  • Konstantinos Tzolakis TOTW (81): gains 4 face-stat points and no PlayStyles, because he already has three. His base 79 item gains 16, so if you own both, evolve the base card.

Low-rated keepers are the other trap. A bronze or silver keeper gets the full +30 and +5, but a 62 ends at 67 like Sophia Poor. That's fine for a laugh and the Evo's challenge objectives, not for a Champions squad.

When does Poor Sophia end, and how fast can you finish it?

According to fut.gg's event data, you must start Poor Sophia by Thursday 29 October 2026, 18:00 UTC and finish it by Thursday 5 November, 18:00 UTC. EA hasn't published Poor Sophia's end time on ea.com, so check the in-game timer as well.

The fastest route is four Squad Battles matches on Semi-Pro: two of any result for Level 1, then two wins for Level 2. The keeper has to play in each match. Squad Battles also earns rank rewards on the side; our Squad Battles rewards table has the tiers.

Poor Sophia takes up one Evolution slot while it's active. With Season 2 starting on 22 October, check how many Evos you can run at once before you start it. Four matches is quick: Zoomaestro needs five, and the other live free options are in our week 4 Evolutions ranking.

Is Poor Sophia worth it?

Yes, if you pick the right keeper. Four matches for +4 to +5 OVR, a big Handling and Reflexes bump, Footwork and 3-star skills on a 78 or 79 is a strong return for a free Evo. Using it on your existing 81 is the mistake: it gets you an 83 with the same handful of stats you already had.

Keep the scale in mind. EA has said this year's upgrades are deliberately smaller: "by the end of the season, we are intending for the scope of Attribute and PlayStyle upgrades between base items and final campaign Items to be meaningfully smaller compared to FC 26" (EA, FUT Deep Dive). A free 83 OVR keeper with Footwork holds up well in that economy, but it isn't an end-game card. Our breakdown of the FC 27 Evolutions nerf has the bigger picture, and the Season 2 start guide covers what changes on 22 October.

No time for four Squad Battles matches before 29 October, or short on coins for the keeper you actually want to evolve? Our FC 27 team can clear your Evolution levels for you, or top up your club.

What hasn't EA said about Poor Sophia?

EA hasn't published a news article or Pitch Notes entry for Poor Sophia. Its requirements, upgrades and end times come from the in-game Evo as captured by fut.gg, and match Destructoid's table and Sportskeeda's requirements list. EA also publishes no numbers for how much Cross Claimer, Footwork or Far Throw improve a keeper, and no official explanation of the Evo's name beyond the in-game joke. The Sophia Poor link comes from FUTBIN and the player's own videos.

FAQ

Is the Poor Sophia Evo free in FC 27? Yes. It costs 0 coins and 0 FC Points. You only need to play two matches and win two more with the keeper.

What are the Poor Sophia requirements? A goalkeeper rated 81 OVR or lower, with no PlayStyle+ and no more than seven PlayStyles. Bronze, silver and gold keepers all qualify. fut.gg lists 2,142 eligible items.

Who is Poor Sophia named after? London City Lionesses goalkeeper Sophia Poor, who posted TikToks questioning her FC 27 rating, according to FUTBIN. Her own 62 OVR card goes to 67 through the Evo.

Why didn't my keeper get Footwork or Far Throw? Each PlayStyle is only added while the card has fewer than three, in the order Cross Claimer, Footwork, Far Throw. A keeper with two PlayStyles gets just one new one; a keeper with three or more gets none.

What is the best keeper for Poor Sophia? For the strongest result, Casey Murphy, Kamil Grabara, Moritz Nicolas or Jane Campbell, because they keep stats above the caps. For value, any 78 or 79 you already own, since it finishes within a couple of points of an 81.

When does Poor Sophia expire? fut.gg lists Thursday 29 October 2026, 18:00 UTC as the last time to start it and Thursday 5 November, 18:00 UTC to finish. Check the in-game timer, since EA hasn't published this Evo's end time.
