FC 27 New Zealand Trick: How to Play Early Tonight — and Why It Doesn't Work on PS5

EA SPORTS FC 27 early access starts on consoles at midnight regional time on 18 September, and that one word — regional — is the whole reason the "New Zealand trick" exists. New Zealand hits midnight before anybody else, so a console that believes it lives in Auckland unlocks the game up to 19 hours before a console that believes it lives in Los Angeles.

That is the theory. The practice is messier, it is platform-specific, and on PlayStation it actively costs you the head start you were chasing. Here is exactly what works tonight, what it gets you in hours, and what it quietly takes away.

TL;DR — the quick answers

  • Current FC 27 phase: early-access eve. The Web App opened 16 September at 17:00 UTC, the Companion App refresh lands 17 September at 17:00 UTC, early access begins 17 September at 23:00 UTC on PC and 18 September at 00:00 regional time everywhere else. Worldwide launch is 25 September (PC unlocks 24 September at 23:00 UTC).
  • The trick is real and it already fired. New Zealand consoles unlocked at 17 September, 12:00 UTC. That is 11 hours before a UK console and 19 hours before a US Pacific console.
  • Xbox: it works. Console location is a normal settings toggle, and you keep your own account, your Ultimate Edition licence and your Ultimate Team club.
  • PS5: it does not, in any way that helps you. PSN account region is fixed at creation, so you need a new New Zealand PSN account — and an EA Account can only ever link one PlayStation account, which means a second EA Account and a brand-new, empty club.
  • PC: impossible, and unnecessary. PC runs on one global clock (23:00 UTC), so location changes nothing.
  • In the US on console, the free EA Play trial starts before the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. Central, Mountain and Pacific players get the 10-hour trial 1–3 hours ahead of their own paid unlock.

What is the New Zealand trick, and does it work in FC 27?

The trick is not a glitch, an exploit or a hack. It is a consequence of how EA staggers this release. EA's own FUT Launch Update Pitch Notes (14 September 2026) puts it plainly:

"Early Access: EA SPORTS FC™ 27 Ultimate Edition players can start playing on PC on 17 September at 23:00 UTC, and on all other platforms on 18 September at 00:00 regional time."

Two clocks, then. PC is a single global instant. Consoles are a rolling wave that starts wherever midnight lands first. New Zealand sits at UTC+12 in mid-September (daylight saving does not start there until 27 September), so midnight on 18 September in Auckland was 17 September, 12:00 UTC — before the sun was up in New York, and a full 11 hours before the same moment arrived in London.

Change which country your console thinks it is in, and you ride the front of that wave instead of the back. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why the community reaction on launch eve is a subreddit full of people posting kiwi emojis from imaginary Auckland addresses.

One important sanity check before you start: the trick only moves you if the release is staggered. It does nothing for a global-clock release, which is exactly why PC players cannot use it.

What time does FC 27 early access actually unlock where you live?

Three separate routes open at three separate moments. This is the table people keep asking for, and the reason the FC subreddits have been a mess all day.

New Zealand (NZST)18 Sep, 00:00 — already live18 Sep, 11:0018 Sep, 16:00

Read that table sideways and the strategy falls out on its own. West of the Atlantic, PC is the fastest legitimate route — a US Pacific PC player starts at 4pm on 17 September, eight hours before the console player sitting next to them. East of the UK, the order flips and the console goes first. And in the UK the two are the same minute, which is why British players get the cleanest launch night of anyone.

EA Play Pro members get the full game at the PC instant, 17 September at 23:00 UTC, but Pro is PC and EA app only — it is not a route on PlayStation or Xbox. We broke down that maths in our EA Play Pro vs Ultimate Edition cost comparison.

How much time does the New Zealand trick actually save you?

Measured properly — New Zealand's 12:00 UTC unlock against your own console's midnight — the head start looks like this.

Whether 11 or 19 hours is worth the hassle depends entirely on what you do with them. In FC 27 those hours are worth more than they used to be: EA has confirmed 15 to 100 Season Points per eligible match, capped at 850 per day, and says that compared with "the roughly 500 to 600 FUT Coins typically earned from a match in EA SPORTS FC™ 26", Champions and Rivals will "have the potential to reward several times more Coins". A full extra day on the front end is a full extra 850-SP bite of the Ones to Watch Season Pass.

How do you do the New Zealand trick on Xbox?

Xbox is the one platform where this is genuinely easy, because the console's location is a device setting rather than an account property. You keep your gamertag, your Ultimate Edition entitlement and your club.

  • Open Settings on your Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One.
  • Go to System.
  • Select Language & location.
  • Set Location to New Zealand.
  • Restart the console when prompted, then launch FC 27.

An FC 27 Ultimate Team pack reveal showing an 83-rated gold goalkeeper card on console

That is the whole procedure, and it is the same one Dexerto and other outlets have documented for every staggered console release. Change it back after the game has unlocked in your own country and nothing else about your console is affected.

The nuance almost every guide skips: changing the console location is not the same as changing your Microsoft account's country. Microsoft's own store documentation warns that "stuff you got in one region might not work in another" when you change your account region, and account-region changes are what strand wallet balances and break re-purchases. You do not need to touch the account. Leave it alone.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 owners can reach a similar setting, but Nintendo ties purchases to the account country rather than the console, and that country cannot be changed freely once set — treat Switch as unconfirmed rather than assuming it behaves like Xbox.

Why doesn't the New Zealand trick work on PS5?

Because PlayStation regionality lives on the account, not the hardware. A PSN account's country is chosen when it is created and cannot be changed afterwards, so there is no settings toggle to flip. The only route is a brand-new PSN account registered in New Zealand — and that is where it falls apart for Ultimate Team.

  • You would need to buy FC 27 again on the New Zealand store, with a payment method that store accepts. Players on r/EASportsFC are reporting exactly this wall tonight: cards are region-locked too.
  • You cannot bring your EA Account with you. EA's own support answer is blunt: EA Accounts can only have one of each platform linked to them, for the lifetime of the account. Your existing EA Account is already married to your existing PSN ID.
  • So you would be starting a second, empty Ultimate Team club on a second EA Account, with none of your carryover rewards, none of your Squad Foundations progress and no path to merge the two later.

You would be paying twice to get a worse version of the head start. If you are on PlayStation, skip it — and if you are thinking about moving platforms more generally, our guide to what carries over when you switch platforms explains what survives a family change and what does not.

Can you use the New Zealand trick on PC?

No, and this is the single most common misunderstanding on the subreddits right now. PC is not on a regional clock at all. EA's Launch Update fixes PC early access at 17 September, 23:00 UTC worldwide, so it unlocks at the same instant in Auckland, London and Los Angeles. A VPN, a time-zone change or a region switch moves nothing, because there is no regional wave to jump ahead of.

The corollary is a genuinely good piece of news for American PC players: your unlock is on 17 September local time, hours before your console-owning friends, with no fiddling required at all. Exact per-platform download timings are in our FC 27 preload and unlock times guide.

Is the free EA Play trial faster than the Ultimate Edition?

In the United States, on console, yes — and that is the most useful thing in this article for anyone who has not pre-ordered.

EA's key-dates block reads: "EA Play Trial: EA Play members can access a 10-hour trial on 18 September at 04:00 UTC." That is a single global instant, exactly like the PC unlock. Console early access, by contrast, waits for local midnight. Line the two up:

  • US Eastern: trial and paid early access open at the same minute — both midnight on 18 September.
  • US Central: the trial opens at 11pm on 17 September, one hour before the Ultimate Edition console unlock.
  • US Mountain: two hours before.
  • US Pacific: three hours before — 9pm on 17 September against midnight.

So an EA Play member on a PS5 in California starts FC 27 before the person who paid $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition on the same console. The catch is duration, not timing: the trial is 10 hours of play, while Ultimate Edition buys up to seven days. Progress made in the trial carries into the full game, so it functions as a free head start rather than a demo. Europe and Asia get no such bonus — there the trial lands hours after the console unlock.

Note that EA Play and EA Play Pro are different products. Pro is the PC-only tier that grants the full game at 23:00 UTC on 17 September; the 10-hour trial is the basic EA Play tier. Confusing the two is the single biggest reason people are quoting each other the wrong unlock time tonight.

What can you do right now without playing early at all?

Here is the part the New Zealand threads keep burying: the biggest launch-week advantage in Ultimate Team was never about playing matches first. It is about being in the market first, and that door is already open to everyone for free.

  • The Web App has been live since 16 September, 17:00 UTC. Claim your Squad Foundations league, open starter packs, list duplicates and start trading. If it is throwing errors at you, work through our FC 27 Web App error fixes.
  • The Companion App refresh lands 17 September at 17:00 UTC, giving you the same market access from your phone.
  • Pick your league deliberately. The Squad Foundations choice is locked to your club for good and decides four free objective players plus your starter pack pool — see which league to pick.
  • Position yourself for the launch-week crash. 85-rated golds are the SBC fodder cliff this year, and the market moves hard once early access floods it with packs. Our launch-week trading guide has the numbers.
  • Know what Season 1 is paying. Ones to Watch runs 17 September to 22 October, and the OTW upgrade rules are in our Ones to Watch explainer.

Not in the mood to grind the first 48 hours? Launch week is when a coin balance is worth the most it will be all year — the players everyone wants are still expensive and the SBC fodder market has not settled. These are the timesaver.gg services built for exactly that window:

A word of honesty on coin buying, because we would rather you hear it from us: EA's User Agreement prohibits buying, selling or transferring coins for real money, and enforcement can include coin removal, club resets and transfer-market bans. We use Comfort Trade with paced delivery and no bots, cheats or injectors, and we do not pretend the residual risk is zero.

FAQ

Does the New Zealand trick get you banned in FC 27? EA has published nothing about it, and there is no pattern of EA account action for changing a console's location setting. The real costs are commercial rather than punitive — a stranded store balance if you change your account region rather than your console's, or a second game purchase on PlayStation. Sony and Microsoft both expect accurate registration details, so it is not a sanctioned route, just a widely used one.

What exact time did the New Zealand trick unlock FC 27? 17 September at 12:00 UTC, which is midnight on 18 September in Auckland. New Zealand is UTC+12 in mid-September because its daylight saving does not begin until 27 September.

Can I use a VPN instead of changing my console location? A VPN changes your apparent IP address, not the region your console or store account reports, so on its own it does not move your unlock time. The Xbox route that works is the console's own Language and location setting.

Will the New Zealand trick work again for the 25 September worldwide launch? The same regional structure applies — EA lists worldwide launch as 24 September at 23:00 UTC on PC and 25 September at 00:00 regional time elsewhere — so the same arithmetic holds for anyone still waiting on the Standard Edition.

Do I lose my Ultimate Team progress if I change my Xbox console location? No. The location setting belongs to the console, not your gamertag or your EA Account, so your club, your Ultimate Edition entitlement and your carryover rewards are untouched.

Is the 10-hour EA Play trial available on PlayStation and Xbox? EA Play membership is available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and EA lists the FC 27 trial as a single global unlock at 18 September, 04:00 UTC. EA Play Pro, the tier that grants the full game at 23:00 UTC on 17 September, is PC and EA app only.
