FC 27's first gameplay balance changes arrive in Title Update 1.2.0, which EA says is due in mid-November. There are five changes: fullbacks hold the defensive line, attackers read the offside line better, AI attackers make better runs into the box, the defensive line stays higher after kick-off, and auto-switching picks the right player more often. Nothing is nerfed outright. EA SPORTS FC 27 announced the list on 28 October in its Gameplay Developer Notes. That's a month after launch, and one day after Title Update 1.1.0 shipped with zero balance changes.
We're in Season 2 of FC 27, which started on 22 October, and Ultimate Scream is live. Until 1.2.0 lands, the launch tuning is still the game you play in Rivals and Champions. Below: every change, what EA left out, how it compares with what EA said on 30 September, and what it means for your tactics.
TLDR: FC 27 Title Update 1.2.0 in 30 seconds. When: "mid-November" per EA. No exact date has been announced. What changes (5): Fullback positioning · Offside awareness · Attacking AI runs · Kick-off goal reduction · Loose-ball auto-switching. Still under investigation, not announced for 1.2.0 (3): high defensive lines pressuring too much · collisions between players of different sizes · accuracy of specific shot types vs goalkeeper positioning. Not mentioned at all: fouls and referee calls, interceptions by low-DEF players, stamina/sprinting, dribbling. Next step: an EA Discord Q&A with the gameplay team on 30 October, 16:30 GMT / 09:30 PT. For your squad: don't rebuild tactics for a patch EA is targeting for mid-November.

When is FC 27 Title Update 1.2.0 coming out?
EA says mid-November and hasn't given a date. The Developer Notes say the first set of gameplay balance updates is "arriving in an upcoming November Title Update", and later: "Our next Title Update in mid-November will introduce our first set of gameplay balance changes for FC 27." The same article calls it Title Update v1.2.0 (EA, 28 Oct 2026).
For 1.1, EA posted a short preview Pitch Notes on 26 October, then the full 1.1.0 notes on release day, 27 October. If 1.2.0 follows the same pattern, the preview is your signal that the date is close. Treat any specific November date you see before that preview as a guess.
The long wait was deliberate. Before launch, EA said in its Closed Beta Feedback Update that it did "not plan on making significant gameplay balance changes in our early Title Updates". Today's notes say the same thing looking back: "we've avoided making any early gameplay updates, which marks a new approach for us compared to previous years." No update so far has included gameplay balance or tuning changes, which is why we titled an earlier post FC 27 Gameplay Heavy: No Fix Before November. That forecast held.
What changes in FC 27 Title Update 1.2.0?
Five areas, all aimed at AI positioning and player selection. None touches shooting, passing power, PlayStyles or AcceleRATE.
| # | Change | What EA says it fixes | What EA says 1.2.0 does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fullback Positioning | Fullbacks "drop too deep while defending", breaking the shape and "unintentionally keeping attackers onside" | Fullbacks "hold their defensive line more consistently", tracking runs only when there's "a genuine attacking threat" |
| 2 | Offside Awareness | Attackers not reading the line | Attackers "better recognise the defensive line and make more effective runs to stay onside" |
| 3 | Attacking AI Improvements | AI attackers not making "decisive runs into available space, particularly around the penalty area" | "more purposeful supporting runs" around the box |
| 4 | Kick-Off Goal Reduction | The defensive line dropping "too deep following kick-off" | The line "will hold a higher position after kick-off" |
| 5 | Loose Ball Switching | Auto-switching not selecting the player closest to the ball | Targeted fixes after a teammate's slide tackle, after a headed pass, and after a missed shot |
EA is careful about how much it promises. On fullbacks: "this behaviour may still occur occasionally, but overall consistency has been noticeably improved." On the patch as a whole: "The adjustments in this update are subtle and targeted, designed to reduce how often more 'frustrating' moments happen in-game." Read 1.2.0 as fewer of these moments, not none.
Fullbacks: the biggest complaint since launch
Fullbacks were the top item from day one. On 30 September, EA wrote: "One of the largest quantities of feedback we've received has been around fullbacks dropping too early and breaking the defensive line" (EA Gameplay Developer Launch Update). It was the first fix on today's list.
The detail that matters: EA pairs the fullback change with Offside Awareness for attackers. A fullback holding the line catches more runners offside. A smarter runner stays onside more often. EA changed both sides at once, so a high line doesn't simply get stronger.
Kick-off goals: confirmed after a month of data
On 30 September, EA said it had "noticed some early movement in the data" on kick-off goals and was watching "whether it develops into a wider trend". Today it lists Kick-Off Goal Reduction as a change. The cause it names is the defensive line dropping too deep straight after kick-off. That fits a common Reddit complaint: conceding, kicking off, and losing the ball into an empty half.
Switching: three specific moments
The switching fix is targeted. EA gives three examples where auto-switching skipped the closest player: after a teammate completes a slide tackle, after a headed pass, and after a shot misses the target. If your complaint is that the game hands you the wrong defender on a loose ball in open play, EA doesn't list that case, so wait for the full notes before assuming it's fixed. Our FC 27 manual defending guide covers why switching matters more this year: EA cut the reach of AI-controlled defenders, so the player you hold decides more interceptions.
What did EA say on 30 September, and what happened since?
The 30 September Launch Update flagged four gameplay topics and one active investigation. EA said then: "an item appearing on this list doesn't mean that changes are coming." Here's where each stands four weeks later.
| Flagged 30 Sept | Status in the 28 Oct notes |
|---|---|
| Fullbacks dropping too deep | Changing in 1.2.0 |
| Goals from kick-off | Changing in 1.2.0 |
| Low driven shots, especially to the near post | Shot types under review: EA lists "Assessing the accuracy of specific shot types alongside goalkeeper positioning" but doesn't name low driven shots, so the link is our read |
| Low-DEF players making interceptions only the best defenders should | No fix mentioned. EA now presents interceptions as a positive: passing is "more efficient" even with "manually-controlled defenders intercepting slightly more often" |
| Fouls and referee calls ("we are looking into several issues related to fouls") | Not mentioned in the 28 Oct notes |
So 2 of the 5 get an announced change in 1.2.0, one probably stays under review, and two aren't mentioned. The foul gap is the one to watch. EA called it the only thing it was actively working on in September, and today's notes say nothing about it. That doesn't mean it's abandoned: it could be a bug fix in the 1.2.0 patch notes rather than a "balance" item. We'll check when the full notes land.
What is EA still investigating?
Three items are listed under Ongoing Investigations. EA hasn't announced them for 1.2.0:
- High defensive lines. "Situations where high defensive lines can put too much pressure on the opposition." This is the 95-depth / Aggressive approach debate from our FC 27 95 Depth post.
- Collisions by size and physicals. "Looking at how collisions between players of different sizes and physical attributes are handled." That's the "this game is Agility, Balance and your ISP" thread from r/EASportsFC today, phrased politely.
- Shot types vs goalkeepers. "Assessing the accuracy of specific shot types alongside goalkeeper positioning." EA doesn't name low driven shots, but that was the shot type it flagged in September.
EA keeps the brakes on: "Changes to one gameplay system can have an impact on others, so we will be deliberate before deciding the level of adjustment needed." We'd expect none of these three before December at the earliest. That's our read, not an EA date.

What isn't in the FC 27 gameplay notes at all?
Measured against today's Reddit, the biggest omissions are:
- Sprinting and stamina. A thread complaining about being sprinted at for 90 minutes got traction on r/EASportsFC today. One commenter said their player sprinted for a whole half without slowing down. Another said stamina should actually punish 95 press and permanent sprint. EA's notes don't mention stamina.
- Pass targeting. A post showing a pass going to the wrong player (aimed at one, locked onto a second, ball going to a third) was the most-upvoted of the 24 newest r/EASportsFC posts we pulled today. Pass assistance isn't in the notes. EA's only passing comment is that completion rates are up.
- Dribbling and manual defending. EA repeated its position: some players want more manual control, others want more AI help. It already said on 13 October that manual defending has a learning curve, and it announced no change.
EA's own explanation for the gaps is the most quotable line in the article: "Something that happens regularly in Division 7 might happen much less frequently in Division 3. This means one single change might not work perfectly for everyone which can result in feedback that goes in opposite directions."
What does EA's match data say about FC 27 so far?
EA shares direction but no numbers. Its four headline findings after one month:
- Shooting: "taking fewer shots overall but scoring more of the opportunities they create."
- Passing: a higher completion percentage "despite making slightly fewer passes overall."
- Defending: "an increase in successful tackles."
- Tactics: "win rates by formation are evenly distributed with minimal variance," with "a wider number of different tactical set ups compared to FC 26."
That last claim cuts against the "everyone plays the same formation" complaint. EA admits some formations are "more popular, especially in the higher divisions", but says no formation wins much more than others. It publishes no win-rate table, so you can't check this yourself. That's worth knowing before you copy a "best formation" list.
Should you change your tactics for FC 27 update 1.2.0?
Not yet. EA's target is mid-November, roughly two weeks away, and it calls the changes subtle. Here's how we'd prepare:
- Keep your current Rivals and Champions setup. The live game is still launch tuning until 1.2.0 actually goes live. Weekend League runs before mid-November happen on today's game.
- Expect higher lines to behave differently, not to disappear. Fullbacks holding the line help a high line. Smarter offside runs hurt it. High lines are still under investigation, not nerfed. Test your Defensive Approach in Friendlies after the patch before taking it into Champions.
- Your kick-off habits may need a rethink. If you score straight from kick-off by running the ball through an empty half, expect that window to shrink.
- Re-save your tactics after the update. Title Update 1.1.0's only tactic-position fix was in Manager Career (players placed in the wrong positions after saving a new tactic), and players on r/EASportsFC were still reporting multi-formation tactics not saving today. Check each custom tactic once 1.2.0 lands. Our kick-off position-switching fix post has the workarounds.
- Bring questions to the Q&A. EA's gameplay team takes questions in the official EA SPORTS FC Discord on 30 October, 16:30 GMT / 09:30 PT (17:30 Paris, 19:30 Moscow). That's the best place to ask for a 1.2.0 date or about the foul gap.

FAQ
When is the next FC 27 title update? EA says Title Update 1.2.0 is coming in mid-November 2026. No exact date has been announced. Expect preview Pitch Notes shortly before release.
Is FC 27 update 1.2.0 a gameplay patch? Yes. It's the first FC 27 update with gameplay balance changes. EA says it avoided any early gameplay updates, and the 1.0.4 and 1.1.0 notes both state they contain no balance or tuning changes.
Is EA nerfing high defensive lines or 95 depth in FC 27? Not announced for 1.2.0. High defensive lines putting "too much pressure on the opposition" are listed as an ongoing investigation, with no change or date announced. The fullback change in 1.2.0 actually makes the line hold more consistently.
Is EA fixing kick-off goals in FC 27? Yes. Title Update 1.2.0 includes Kick-Off Goal Reduction: the defensive line will hold a higher position after kick-off, making it harder to run straight into the box.
Are low driven shots getting nerfed in FC 27? Not confirmed. EA is "assessing the accuracy of specific shot types alongside goalkeeper positioning" but hasn't announced a change. In September it said it was "pretty happy with the current balance between shooting and goalkeeping".
