Most new Helldivers obsess over weapons and stratagems and treat armor as a cosmetic. That is the single biggest loadout mistake at high difficulty. Your armor decides how fast you move, how much stamina you have, and — through its passive — whether you survive the hit that would otherwise send you back to the Super Destroyer.
This guide answers the three questions players actually ask: what the armor classes do, whether heavy armor is worth the speed hit, and which armor passives are worth building around — by faction and by difficulty. Verified against the current released build, Devoid of Liberty 7.1.1 (2026-09-24).

Quick answer: what armor should you wear in Helldivers 2?
- New players and most bug/Terminid play: Medium armor with the Fortified or Democracy Protects passive. It is the honest default — enough survivability to take a hit, enough speed to run objectives.
- High-difficulty survivability (Helldive 9 / Super Helldive 10): Heavy armor with Fortified or Servo-Assisted, ideally paired with a vehicle or a defensive playstyle.
- Automatons / open maps where you kite: Light armor with Scout or Peak Physique — mobility is your defense against ranged fire.
- The passive matters more than the class. Armor rating changes how long you live; the passive changes how you play. Pick the passive first, then the class it comes on.
There is no single "best armor" — Helldivers 2 is co-op PvE against three very different factions, and the right answer changes with the enemy, the map, and your weapon.
How armor actually works: rating, speed, and stamina
Every armor set has three stats: Armor Rating, Speed, and Stamina Regen. The game sorts all sets into three classes:
| Class | Default Armor Rating | Speed | Stamina Regen | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 50 | Highest | Highest | Mobility, kiting, stealth |
| Medium | 100 | Balanced | Balanced | All-rounder / default |
| Heavy | 150 | Lowest | Lowest | Tanking, defense, vehicles |
Armor Rating lowers the damage you take when hit — the higher the rating, the less each bullet, bite, and blast hurts. Per the community wiki, stamina regeneration is tied directly to that rating: if rating is 100 or higher, Stamina Regen = `200 − Armor Rating`; below 100 it is `150 − (Armor Rating ÷ 2)`. In plain terms, the tankier you are, the slower you refill your sprint bar. That trade — survivability for mobility — is the entire armor decision.
Source (helldivers.wiki.gg, Armor page): "Armor will lower the damage the Helldiver takes when hit, depending on its armor rating."
One more effect worth knowing: community testing (gaming.stackexchange, Steam discussions) reports that armor rating above 100 also softens headshot damage, scaling the headshot multiplier down from 150% toward roughly 97% at the top end. Arrowhead has never published that number, so treat it as a strong community estimate rather than a hard stat — but it is part of why heavy-armor mains report "shrugging off" hits that drop a light-armor diver instantly.
Was the armor-rating bug ever fixed?
Yes. Back at launch (February 2024) Arrowhead confirmed armor values were not applying correctly — for a while, every class effectively had the same protection, which is why old forum threads say "armor doesn't matter." That was patched long ago. Armor rating has worked as intended for over a year, and the 6.3.0 vehicle-armor pass (June 2026) extended accurate armor values to vehicles too. If a guide tells you armor rating is still broken, it is quoting 2024.
Is heavy armor worth it?
Short answer: yes, at high difficulty or alongside a vehicle — but not as a blanket default.
Heavy armor's appeal is simple: on Helldive (9) and Super Helldive (10), a single stray Devastator rocket or Charger clip can one-shot a light-armor Helldiver. Heavy armor turns many of those lethal hits into survivable ones. As one r/Helldivers player put it this week, "it's much harder during a fight to realize just how much time you've spent dodging common enemies because every hit is life-threatening in light armor. With heavy armor you can shrug off a stray [hit]."
The cost is movement. Heavy armor's lower speed and smaller stamina pool mean long sprints between objectives are a slog. The community's own counter to that is telling: pair heavy armor with a vehicle — the TD-110 Maelstrom tank or an FRV covers the ground your legs can't, so the stamina penalty barely registers inside an objective area.
When heavy armor is NOT worth it: on lower difficulties (1–5) nothing hits hard enough to justify the mobility loss, and on open Automaton maps where kiting ranged units is the whole fight, light armor's speed keeps you out of line-of-sight better than heavy armor's rating keeps you alive. Match the class to the threat, not to a tier list.
Helldivers 2 armor passives explained (the part that actually matters)
There are over 100 armor sets but only 31 unique passives — the sets are mostly cosmetic reskins of the same effects. Your passive is the real decision. Here are the ones worth building around, with their verified effects:
Democracy Protects — 50% chance to not die when you take lethal damage, and prevents bleed-out damage if your chest hemorrhages. A coin-flip on death is enormous at high difficulty. Note the community caveat: the blast that "kills" you often ragdolls you, and the game can count the landing as fresh impact damage — so it is "50% to survive the bomb, then survive the fall," not full immunity.
Fortified — reduces recoil while crouched or prone and cuts explosive damage taken by 50%. Against Automatons (rockets everywhere) and against your own stray stratagems, this is one of the most reliable defensive passives in the game.
Servo-Assisted — +30% throwing range and +50% limb health. The throw range alone makes it a favorite for stratagem-heavy and anti-tank builds (lob that beacon onto the Bile Titan from safety), and the limb health keeps you from getting slowed by broken legs.
Peak Physique — improves melee damage and, more importantly, weapon handling and drag on heavy, slow-ADS weapons. If you run the HMG, a Recoilless Rifle, or other low-handling guns, this passive is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade.
Scout — reduces how far away enemies detect you and marks points of interest on the map. The stealth pick for solo play and for fast, low-aggro objective runs on light armor.
Blunt-Force Mitigation (the Ironclad Democracy tank-armor passive) — 50% chance to avoid grievous limb injury and −30% impact/collision damage. Built for drivers and melee-range brawlers; see the full Ironclad Democracy weapon rankings for how it pairs with that Warbond's kit.
Honorable mentions: Med-Kit (extra stims + longer stim duration — a top-tier survivability pick the community rates above Extra Padding), Engineering Kit (reduced recoil + extra grenades), and Extra Padding (a flat +armor-rating bump that quietly pushes a medium set toward heavy-tier protection).

Best armor by faction
Armor rating is faction-agnostic, but the passive and class you want shift hard depending on who you are fighting.
Best armor vs Terminids (bugs)
Bugs swarm and melee. You want to survive being surrounded and keep moving. Medium or heavy armor with Democracy Protects or Fortified is the workhorse — Fortified also blunts the Bile Spewer and Charger impacts. For a mobile bug build on lower difficulties, light armor with Peak Physique (better melee to kick off Hunters) works well. Pair it with your best Terminid loadout.
Best armor vs Automatons (bots)
Bots are a ranged-rocket war. Fortified is close to mandatory for its 50% explosive resistance — it turns Devastator and Rocket-Strider hits from lethal to survivable. Run it on medium or heavy armor and play cover-to-cover. The matching gun choices are in the best Automaton loadout.
Best armor vs the Illuminate (squids)
The Illuminate mix fast Voteless rushes with ranged Overseer and Harvester fire. This is the one front where light armor with Scout or Servo-Assisted often wins, because kiting and repositioning beat standing and tanking. On Super Helldive, heavy armor with Democracy Protects is the safer pick. See the best Illuminate loadout for the full build.
How to unlock more armor (and the time cost)
Armor comes from three places: the free Superstore rotation (Super Credits), Warbonds (unlocked page-by-page with Medals), and the Acquisitions screen for starter sets. Every Premium Warbond bundles a light, medium, and heavy set around its theme — which is why "which Warbond first" and "which armor" are really the same question. The best passives are spread across tracks, so building a full armor toolbox is a long-game Medal and Super Credit grind.
That grind is the real cost of a deep armor collection — Medals are capped at 250 with overflow discarded, so you unlock one Warbond's worth at a time. If you would rather spend the time diving than farming pages, that is exactly where a Helldivers 2 leveling and progression service can carry the grind while you keep the gameplay. Everything in the game is earnable for free — this is purely a time trade, not a pay-to-win shortcut, since Helldivers 2 has no marketplace or item trading of any kind.
FAQ
Is heavy armor worth it in Helldivers 2? Yes at high difficulty (Helldive 9 and Super Helldive 10) and when paired with a vehicle, because heavy armor's high armor rating turns otherwise-lethal hits into survivable ones. It is not worth the speed and stamina penalty on difficulties 1–5 or on open Automaton maps where kiting is your main defense. Medium armor is the better all-round default for most players.
Did Arrowhead buff heavy armor recently? No. Heavy armor's speed, stamina, and damage reduction have not changed in the current patch line. Players who say it "feels better now" are usually remembering the launch-era (February 2024) armor-rating bug, when every class had effectively the same protection; that bug was fixed over a year ago, so armor rating has simply been working as intended.
What is the best armor passive in Helldivers 2? There is no single best, but the most universally strong picks are Democracy Protects (50% chance to survive lethal damage), Fortified (50% explosive resistance), Servo-Assisted (+30% throw range, +50% limb health), and Med-Kit (extra stims). Fortified is the standout against Automatons; Democracy Protects is the safest general survivability pick.
Does armor rating actually reduce damage? Yes. A higher armor rating lowers the damage you take from most sources and, per community testing, also softens headshot damage above a rating of 100. Light armor sits around 50, medium around 100, and heavy around 150 by default — the trade is that higher rating means slower movement and slower stamina regeneration.
How many armor passives are there? There are 31 unique armor passives spread across more than 100 armor sets, so most armor differences are cosmetic. Choose your set by its passive and class first, and treat the look as a bonus.
Can you buy or trade armor in Helldivers 2? No. There is no player trading, marketplace, or auction house in Helldivers 2. Armor is earned through the Superstore (Super Credits) and Warbonds (Medals), and both Super Credits and Medals are fully earnable in-game. Never use third-party "free Super Credit" sites — they are against Arrowhead's terms and risk your account.
