Quick answer (2 November 2026, Season 42 "Starward Decade", Patch 2.2.16a): star protection stops one ranked loss from costing you a star. You get it three ways: fill your Protection Points bar to 100%, use a Star Protection Card, or, for some Mythic-bracket players, take the Roam tile's once-a-day protection.
- Bar size this season: 1,000 points at Legend and 1,100 at Mythic and Mythical Glory, read from Season 42 player screens
- What fills it: your match grade, activity, and larger bonuses when a teammate breaks the rules or your connection drops
- Rank Protection Card: a different item, which only stops a demotion at 0 stars
- Mythic: Protection Points still work there, but Star-raising Points don't
- Roam: read the tile before you queue. Season 42 shows two different labels
Moonton doesn't publish a star protection table on the web. The most recent official word we found is one short section of the Patch 2.2.16 notes:
"We've added exclusive Protection Point and Star-raising Point rewards for Supreme Medals. To balance this change, we've adjusted the Star-raising Points and Protection Points for other medals."
No numbers came with that, so point figures in older guides may be out of date. We rebuilt this one from Season 42 screenshots that players posted on r/MobileLegendsGame, and we mark which details are official, which we read from those screens, and which are only player reports.

How does star protection work in MLBB?
Losing a ranked match normally costs one star. If star protection is active, the loss doesn't take that star. The in-game text puts it simply: "Reach 100% to gain star protection."
MLBB has four protection tools, and most confusion comes from mixing them up:
| Tool | What it does | How you get it | Works at Mythic? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protection Points | Saves a star when the bar reaches 100% | Builds automatically from ranked matches | Yes, seen in Season 42 |
| Star Protection Card | Saves a star on a loss | Events and Starlight rewards, usually lasts 7 days | Guides disagree, check the card text |
| Rank Protection Card | Stops a demotion when you lose at 0 stars | Rank promotion rewards | Check the card text |
| Roam daily protection | Saves a star on a Roam loss, once a day | Choosing the Roam tile when it shows the label | Mythic bracket only, per players |
The card details come from the MLBB wiki's Ranked page. The difference between the two cards matters: if you're at Legend V with 0 stars, a Rank Protection Card keeps you in Legend, but it won't save a star you'd lose in the middle of a division.
Star-raising Points are the win-side version. Per the same wiki page, reaching 100% gives you an extra star on your next win. They're disabled in Mythic, which is why your climb feels slower once you get there. Our Mythic points guide covers how that part of the ladder works.
How many Protection Points do you need in Season 42?
You need 1,000 at Legend and 1,100 at Mythic and Mythical Glory, going by this season's screens. The wiki still lists 1,500 for Mythic, and that figure doesn't match what players see now.
| Rank | Wiki figure | Seen in Season 42 |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | 100 | Not checked |
| Elite | 200 | Not checked |
| Master | 300 | Not checked |
| Grandmaster | 500 | Not checked |
| Epic | 700 | Not checked |
| Legend | 1,000 | 1,000 (Legend IV lobby, 2 October) |
| Mythic | 1,500 | 1,100 (Mythic result screen, 22 October) |
| Mythical Glory | 1,500 | 1,100 (Mythical Glory result screen, 23 October) |
We only list what we could see on screen, so treat the lower-rank figures as older wiki numbers. Your own bar is easy to check: it sits in the corner of the ranked lobby and shows both figures.
That screen is the most painful one in the game: 1,095 out of 1,100, 99%, and still minus one star. The bar has to reach the full 100% before it pays out. Some guides still say protection stops at Mythic, but this player's 20 of 25 Mythic stars and live bar show it doesn't.
What gives you Protection Points in MLBB?
Your match grade gives a small amount, and a teammate's violation gives a lot more. Here's what real post-match screens showed in October:
| Source | Points seen | Where it came from |
|---|---|---|
| Grade Bonus | +25 | Mythic and Mythical Glory result screens |
| Active Battle Rewards | +5 | Same screens |
| Bad Connection Protection | +110 | Mythical Glory result screen |
| Violation Protection | +200 | Mythical Glory result screen |
| Report Compensation Notice | 420, others report 500 | Report Mail after a confirmed report |
The Mythical Glory screen added +385 in one match, moving the bar to 607 of 1,100. The four rows visible on that screenshot add up to 340, so the screenshot doesn't show the full breakdown.
Patch 2.2.16 also means medals now matter differently. A Season 42 medal breakdown lists these match ratings:
| Medal | Match rating | Star-raising Points |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 3.0 to 4.0 | 10 |
| Silver | 4.1 to 7.0 | 20 |
| Gold | 7.1 to 10.0 | 30 |
| Supreme | 10.1 and above | Not published |
| MVP | Top of the winning team, 10.0 or lower | 100 |
| Supreme MVP | Top of the winning team, 10.1 or above | Not published |
| MVP Loss | Top of the losing team, at least 6.6 | Not published |
These figures are third-party, and Moonton's notes don't include them. We found no official table of Protection Points per medal, so be wary of any guide that prints one.
How many losses does a full bar take? It varies a lot. One player said they normally get 150 to 180 points a match, which fills an empty 1,100-point bar in six or seven matches. The +30 Mythic screen above would take about 37. A confirmed report on a bad teammate can do the work of several games at once.
Why doesn't everyone get Roam star protection?
Because the Roam tile doesn't show the same thing for everyone. Both of these screens are from Season 42, in the same Mythic 10-Ban queue:
The first, posted on 19 October, says "Needed Lane, Star Protection Once Per Day". That's the real thing: your first Roam loss of the day keeps the star.
The second, posted on 11 October, says "Needed Lane Reward +5%" on Roaming and +15% on Flex Pro, with a line reading "Protection Point Bonus (Inactive)". That's only a points bonus, so a loss here still costs a star.
Moonton hasn't explained the difference. A player in that thread blamed rank, saying the once-a-day version starts at Mythic and above, and older threads also put it at Mythic. But the second lobby is a Mythic queue too, so rank alone may not be the whole story. Another Season 42 player lost a star on their first Roam loss of the day at 23 stars.
So don't assume you have it. Tap Roaming and read the label before you confirm.
Players also report a few rules around it. None of these are official, and some are from earlier seasons:
- Not in placement: it reportedly starts after your placement matches
- Not for full teams: it works solo, duo and trio, but not 5-man
- Below Mythic: Legend and lower get points instead. A Season 39 Legend screen showed 100 to 200 Protection Points
- Reset time: the daily reset is reported at 16:00 in the Philippines and Singapore. Everywhere else, watch when your daily tasks refresh

How do you get Star Protection Cards?
Mostly from events, Starlight rewards and ranked milestones. Per the wiki, Star Protection Cards generally last 7 days once claimed, so use them instead of saving them for the end of the season.
GamingOnPhone's Season 42 rewards list gives these ranked milestones:
- Epic: 2 Rank Protection Cards
- Legend: 2 Rank Protection Cards
- Mythic (1 star): 2 Rank Protection Cards and an MVP Star-up Card
- Mythical Honor: a Rank Protection Card
Those are Rank cards, not Star cards, so they only help at 0 stars. Save them for a promotion push, when one bad loss could drop you a whole rank.
We found no permanent shop listing or verified redeem code for Star Protection Cards this season, so check the in-game event tab, and our Starlight guide if you're weighing the membership. An older Codashop guide also mentions a team card for premade squads of 3 or 5, but we couldn't confirm that for Season 42.
How should you use star protection in ranked?
Use the bar to limit a bad session, and don't treat it as a reason to keep playing. Players are unhappy with how much it rewards volume. A thread from today compares a friend's climb with the poster's own, and one reply claims it's possible to reach Mythical Immortal with a sub-50% win rate over a thousand-plus matches. That's one player's claim, but the system does favour people who play a lot.
Five habits get the most out of it:
- Read your bar before you queue. If it's close to 100%, protection may only be a match or two away. If it's near empty, a losing streak costs real stars.
- Check the Roam tile first. If it says Star Protection Once Per Day and you can actually play Roam, queue it before your main role. One player does exactly that, then swaps to their preferred roles. Don't take the tile on a hero who can't roam, because your team pays for that.
- Report real violations. Compensation arrives by Report Mail, and 420 points is more than a third of a Mythic bar.
- Chase grades in losses. Even a lost match pays out by grade, so keep farming objectives and assists after the game turns against you.
- Stop after two bad losses. Protection saves one star. It doesn't fix tilt, and our Mythical Glory guide covers the longer climb.
Timing matters too. Season 42 is expected to end around 15 to 16 December, though Moonton hadn't announced the date when we last checked. Stars reset then, so plan your final push before that. For the full ladder, see our rank system guide.

FAQ
What is star protection in MLBB? It stops one ranked loss from costing you a star. It activates when your Protection Points bar reaches 100%, when you use a Star Protection Card, or on the Roam tile's once-a-day protection if your lobby shows it.
How many Protection Points do you need for star protection? In Season 42, screens show 1,000 at Legend and 1,100 at Mythic and Mythical Glory. The wiki's 1,500 for Mythic doesn't match this season.
Does star protection work in Mythic? Yes for Protection Points, which October 2026 Mythic screens show in use. Star-raising Points are disabled there, so they won't add a bonus star on a win.
What's the difference between a Star Protection Card and a Rank Protection Card? A Star Protection Card saves a star on a loss. A Rank Protection Card only stops a demotion when you lose at 0 stars.
Why did I lose a star as Roam? Your tile probably showed a points bonus instead of "Star Protection Once Per Day", or you'd already used it that day. It's also reportedly unavailable in placement matches and 5-man teams.
When does Roam star protection reset? Players report 16:00 in the Philippines and Singapore. Moonton hasn't published a time, so use your daily task refresh as the guide.
