Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has two separate start lines, and confusing them is the fastest way to burn a day of your launch window. Campaign Early Access opens Friday, October 16, 2026, but the full game — multiplayer, the Warzone integration, and everything the grind actually runs on — does not go live until Thursday, October 23, 2026. If you pre-ordered expecting to jump into ranked lobbies on the 16th, you are going to be staring at a locked menu.
This guide lays out exactly what you can play on October 16, what stays locked until the 23rd, who qualifies for Early Access, and how to use that seven-day head start so you are not starting the multiplayer and camo grind a week behind everyone who planned ahead.

Key Takeaways
- October 16 = Campaign Early Access only. You can play the full single-player campaign a week early — nothing else.
- October 23 = full launch. Multiplayer, Warzone integration, ranked, Zombies/DMZ and the live-season systems all unlock on this date.
- Early Access requires a digital pre-order or pre-purchase of the Standard Digital or Vault Edition. Physical copies and non-buyers do not get the campaign early.
| - MW4 is not on Game Pass at launch, and it does not release on PS4 or Xbox One — current-gen (PS5, Xbox Series X | S, PC, Switch 2 later) only. |
|---|
- The smart play is to clear the campaign during the quiet week, pre-load, and have your account prep done so you can hit multiplayer at full speed on the 23rd.
What can you actually play on October 16?
The campaign. That is the entire list.
Per Activision's official Campaign Early Access post, players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase Modern Warfare 4 "get Early Access to the game's Campaign" starting Friday, October 16. The wording is deliberate — it is campaign and only campaign. Multiplayer, Warzone, and the live-service systems are explicitly tied to the October 23 launch date.
The campaign itself is substantial. You play as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time, when a routine mission collapses into a full-scale North Korean invasion. A second thread follows Captain Price operating off-book, hunting a weapon "powerful enough to shift the balance of power." Infinity Ward is promising the usual spread: large-scale battles, covert missions, combined-arms warfare, and cinematic set pieces.
So on the 16th you get a full, finished single-player campaign — a genuine week-long head start on the story. What you do not get is any of the content that the Timesaver grind, your camo progress, or your rank are built on.
What stays locked until October 23?
Everything multiplayer-facing. Here is the clean split.
| Mode / System | Early Access (Oct 16) | Full Launch (Oct 23) |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign (single-player) | ✅ Playable | ✅ Playable |
| Core Multiplayer | ❌ Locked | ✅ Unlocks |
| Ranked Play | ❌ Locked | ✅ at/after launch |
| Warzone integration | ❌ Locked | ✅ Unlocks |
| Weapon leveling & camo grind | ❌ Locked | ✅ Starts |
| Operator packs / launch rewards | ❌ Not usable in MW4 | ✅ Granted at launch |
| Battle Pass / live season | ❌ Locked | ✅ Season begins |
The practical read: none of your competitive progression starts on the 16th. Weapon XP, mastery camos, prestige, ranked placement — all of it begins on the 23rd alongside the rest of the player base. The campaign week does not feed your multiplayer account in any way.
That matters for the launch grind. If your goal is to be deep into weapon leveling or chasing mastery camos in the first 48 hours, the campaign head start does nothing for you — the clock on that grind still starts October 23 for everyone. Who qualifies for Early Access?
Early Access is a pre-order / pre-purchase benefit, not a free launch perk. From the official post, you qualify if you pre-order or pre-purchase:
- The Standard Digital Edition, or
- The Vault Edition
| ...on **Xbox Series X | S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, or Nintendo Switch 2** (Switch 2 pre-orders open "later this year"). |
|---|
Three things that trip people up:
- Physical copies do not get the campaign early. Early Access is digital-only. A physical Standard Edition gets you Open Beta early access, but not the October 16 campaign start.
- No pre-order = no early campaign. If you buy the game on launch day, you start on the 23rd like everyone else.
- It is "subject to change." Activision footnotes platform availability and the start date as subject to change, so treat October 16 as confirmed-but-watch-for-updates, not an immovable guarantee.

Does Early Access change when multiplayer unlocks?
No. This is the single most common misconception. Buying the Vault Edition does not get you into multiplayer earlier than the Standard Edition. Both editions hit the exact same October 23 multiplayer unlock. The only early-play benefit tied to pre-order is the campaign on October 16 (and, earlier in the cycle, the Open Beta).
What the Vault Edition does add is content that becomes usable at launch — the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces Operator packs, the Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ Deployment Bonus. The Hunter Killer Operator skin is a pre-order bonus that lands instantly in Black Ops 7 and Warzone, and in MW4 at launch. None of that shortens the multiplayer release date.

What platforms is MW4 on — and what's excluded?
Two confirmed exclusions worth knowing before you plan:
- No Game Pass at launch. Unlike Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, which hit Game Pass on day one, Modern Warfare 4 will not be on the subscription service at launch — Activision has indicated it arrives on the service "at least a year after release day." You have to buy it. (More in our is MW4 on Game Pass post.)
| - No last-gen. MW4 will not release on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. It is current-gen only: PS5, Xbox Series X | S, PC (Battle.net, Steam, Xbox on PC), and Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. (See MW4 last-gen support.) |
|---|
| Development is led by Infinity Ward, with Beenox handling the PC build and Digital Legends bringing the Switch 2 version. Xbox Play Anywhere means a single Xbox purchase covers both Series X | S and Xbox on PC. |

How to use the seven-day head start
If you have Early Access, the quiet week before launch is free value. Here is how to spend it so you are ahead, not behind, when multiplayer goes live:
- Pre-load now. The PC build is roughly 115GB — do not wait until the 23rd to download it. Our PC preload time and specs guide has the file-size and timing details.
- Clear the campaign October 16–22. Knock out the story while servers are quiet, so launch day is 100% dedicated to multiplayer and your grind.
- Have your launch-day plan locked. Decide your first weapons, your camo order, and your ranked timing before the 23rd so you are not deciding at the menu. Our launch-day first-things-to-do checklist and how to play the campaign early on October 16 cover both ends.
- Lock in your setup before launch. The multiplayer grind starts the same minute for everyone on the 23rd — the players who prepped their leveling, camos, and lobby plan in advance pull ahead in the first weekend.
Want to skip the week-one grind entirely and start MW4 multiplayer already stacked? Lock your launch-day setup before October 23 — Timesaver.gg has MW4 services ready day one:
- MW4 Bot Lobbies — the fastest, safest way to level weapons and farm camos in low-pressure lobbies from launch
- MW4 Weapon Leveling — max your core weapons without the grind
- MW4 Mastery Camo Unlock — the mastery camo track, done for you
- MW4 Account Leveling — rank up your account ready for launch-week lobbies
FAQ
Can I play MW4 multiplayer on October 16? No. October 16 is Campaign Early Access only. Multiplayer, Warzone, ranked, and all progression systems unlock at the full launch on October 23, 2026.
| What do I need to play MW4 early on October 16? A digital pre-order or pre-purchase of the Standard Digital or Vault Edition on Xbox Series X | S, Xbox on PC, PS5, Battle.net, or Steam. Physical copies and launch-day buyers do not get the campaign early. |
|---|
Does the Vault Edition unlock multiplayer before the Standard Edition? No. Both editions unlock multiplayer at the same October 23 launch. The Vault Edition adds extra operator packs, the Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell, and a DMZ bonus — all usable at launch, not earlier.
Does my campaign progress from Early Access carry into multiplayer? No. Campaign and multiplayer are separate. Playing the campaign early does not grant any weapon XP, camo progress, or rank toward multiplayer — all of that begins on October 23.
| Is MW4 on Game Pass or last-gen consoles? No to both. MW4 is not on Game Pass at launch and does not release on Xbox One or PS4. It is current-gen only: PS5, Xbox Series X | S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. |
|---|
When does the MW4 multiplayer grind actually start? October 23, 2026, for everyone — pre-order status does not change this. The campaign head start does not shorten the multiplayer clock, so your weapon leveling, camos, and rank all begin at launch.
