MW4 TTK Changes Explained: Every Weapon Nerf in the Beta Before Weekend 2

Quick answer (TL;DR): Infinity Ward nerfed Modern Warfare 4's time-to-kill three separate times during the Early Access Beta — on August 22, 23 and 24, 2026 — after players said guns were killing too fast. The cuts hit at least 12 weapons across every class, and the biggest damage in the whole beta was the FiNN LMG, dropped from 39 to 33 max damage (−15%). Headshot multipliers were slashed just as hard: the M4 went from 1.5x to 1.2x, the KRAIT P68 pistol from 1.6x to 1.4x, and the FiNN from 1.5x to 1.3x. At the same time, Infinity Ward buffed attachments — the Holo, Reflex and Mini Reflex optics lost their ADS-speed penalty entirely. Infinity Ward has confirmed more TTK, movement and spawn changes are coming for Open Beta Weekend 2 (August 28 – September 1). Everything below is taken from the official MW4 beta patch notes. If your beta gunfights felt like whoever pulled the trigger first simply won, you weren't imagining it — and Infinity Ward agreed with you within 24 hours of the beta going live. Over four days of Early Access, the studio published daily patch notes that quietly rewrote Modern Warfare 4's damage model: shrinking range bands, cutting damage values, and pulling headshot multipliers down across assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, marksman rifles and pistols.

This guide collects every confirmed TTK-related change from the official patch notes, day by day and weapon by weapon, so you know exactly what's different when the free Open Beta Weekend 2 opens on August 28. Every number here comes from Activision's own Modern Warfare 4 beta patch notes page — nothing is leaked, estimated, or datamined.

What is TTK in Modern Warfare 4, and why did Infinity Ward change it?

TTK (time-to-kill) is how long it takes, in milliseconds, to down a full-health opponent when every shot lands. It isn't a cosmetic stat — it's the single number that decides whether a gunfight is a reaction test or a duel. A very fast TTK rewards whoever shoots first. A slower TTK gives the player being shot at time to strafe, break line of sight, or win the trade.

MW4 uses a range-banding damage model: damage doesn't decay smoothly with distance, it steps down in tiers at fixed distance thresholds. That's why almost every nerf in the patch notes below appears twice — once as a damage value cut and once as a range band shrink. Both push TTK up, but in different ways. Cutting damage raises the number of bullets required to kill. Shrinking a range band means you drop into the weaker damage tier sooner, so the gun needs more bullets at the same distance.

Infinity Ward acknowledged the problem publicly on Day 2 of the beta (August 22), writing in the official patch notes:

"We've been following the conversation and agree that time-to-kill (TTK) isn't quite right yet, so we've tuned down the lethality of some of our guns to start."

That "to start" mattered — two larger rounds followed on August 23 and 24.

What did Infinity Ward change on each beta patch day?

Here's the full Early Access Beta timeline, straight from the patch notes:

The framing shifted noticeably between rounds. On August 23, Infinity Ward described TTK as an ongoing investigation: "Time-to-kill remains a focus as we are identifying weapons that are killing too fast and adjusting based on feedback and in-game data." By August 24, it was a stated goal — the studio wrote that the update "includes adjustments that increase the minimum TTK for several weapons."

Which assault rifles were nerfed in the MW4 beta?

Assault rifles took the most attention, because they're the class most players default to and the class whose headshot multipliers were furthest out of line.

WeaponChangeBefore → AfterPatch day
M4Head damage multiplier1.5x → 1.2xAug 23
M4Max damage range0–25.4m → 0–20.3mAug 24
M4Minimum damage17 → 16Aug 24

PATRIOT XMR (Gunfight)Head damage multiplier1.42x → 1.22xAug 23

The M4 is the clearest example of a two-stage nerf. On August 23 its headshot multiplier fell from 1.5x to 1.2x. On August 24 its maximum-damage range was cut by 5.1 metres — a 20% reduction — and Infinity Ward inserted an entirely new medium damage band (17 damage from 38.4m to 51.5m) that didn't exist before, stretching out the fall-off curve rather than dropping straight to minimum damage.

The Kastov 545 Apex Attachment took the harshest single hit of any assault-rifle configuration: max damage fell from 36 to 31, its 22.9–39.6m band was deleted outright, and everything past 22.8m now uses the 18-damage minimum tier. If you were running Kastov Apex builds in Weekend 1 and they suddenly stopped melting people, that's why. (For a refresher on how Apex Attachments work at all, see our MW4 weapons and Apex Attachments guide.)

Which SMGs, LMGs and marksman rifles were nerfed?

The SMG and LMG cuts were blunter — mostly straight damage reductions rather than range surgery.

Three things stand out here.

The FiNN LMG was gutted. A 6-point cut to max damage (−15%) plus a 0.2x headshot reduction is the single largest nerf package handed to any weapon in the beta. It went from a gun that could out-trade SMGs at close range to a weapon that has to be played as an LMG.

The MAR-9 lost a third of its ideal range. Its maximum-damage band was cut from 30.7m to 20.8m — a 32% reduction. The damage numbers themselves (50 / 48 / 46 / 37) were untouched; the gun is identical up close and dramatically weaker at mid-range. That's a pure range-band nerf, and it's the cleanest illustration of why reading only the damage column misses half the story.

The Krait P68 pistol was rebalanced almost everywhere. Head 1.6x → 1.4x, neck 1.25x → 1.15x, upper torso 1.25x → 1.15x, lower torso 1.15x → 1.0x, and extremities 1.15x → 1.0x. Five multipliers cut in one patch — the most comprehensive locational rework of the beta.

Did MW4 nerf headshots in the beta?

Yes — and this is the change most players felt without being able to name it. Across the three patch days, Infinity Ward reduced the head damage multiplier on eleven weapons and weapon variants, and cut neck, torso or extremity multipliers on several more (the MAR-9, the Kastov 545 Apex, the PPSH-41, the HAN 86 and the Krait P68 all lost locational damage outside the head).

WeaponHead multiplier beforeAfterDrop
Krait P681.60x1.40x−0.20
Oris 8.61.70x1.60x−0.10
FiNN LMG1.50x1.30x−0.20
M41.50x1.20x−0.30
M4 Hurricane1.50x1.30x−0.20
Kastov 7621.48x1.35x−0.13
PPSH-411.40x1.25x−0.15
HAN 861.40x1.25x−0.15
Type 73 Assault1.40x1.30x−0.10
X-58 Nyx1.35x1.20x−0.15
ISO Nightshade1.40x1.20x−0.20

The M4's −0.30 drop is the biggest in the beta, and it explains why the most-used gun in Weekend 1 felt materially different by Sunday night. Lower multipliers don't just slow headshot kills — they compress the gap between a precise player and a spray-and-pray player, which is exactly the "luck over skill" complaint Infinity Ward was responding to.

Which attachments were buffed to offset the nerfs?

This is the half of the August 23 patch that got much less coverage, and it's the half that actually gives you levers to pull. Infinity Ward stripped handling penalties off a batch of attachments:

  • Holo, Mini Reflex and Reflex optics — ADS speed penalty removed entirely.
  • Bipod — ADS speed penalty removed.
  • Underbarrel Launcher and Underbarrel Shotgun — ADS speed penalty removed.
  • Angled Grip — ADS penalty cut from +28ms to +22ms; sprint-to-fire penalty cut from +15ms to +10ms.
  • Vertical Grip — ADS penalty cut from +22ms to +18ms, jog speed benefit +17%, strafe speed benefit +50%.
  • Frangible Rounds — stun effect removed; slow duration −26.8% and slow magnitude −21.4%.
  • All muzzles and all lasers — pros/cons corrected in Gunsmith, laser brightness adjusted.

Infinity Ward also confirmed a menu bug was misleading players: "Many 'Cons' were also displayed incorrectly in the menu, and we've corrected the descriptions to reflect accurate behavior." If you avoided an optic in Weekend 1 because its listed downside looked brutal, re-check it in Weekend 2 — the downside may never have existed.

Net effect: guns kill slower, but they now aim faster. The 22ms saved on an Angled Grip and the removed optic penalties partly claw back the TTK you lost, which is why attachment unlocks matter more in Weekend 2 than they did in Weekend 1. That's a levelling problem, not a skill problem — our MW4 weapon levelling guide covers the fastest routes to those unlocks.

What TTK changes are confirmed for Open Beta Weekend 2?

Infinity Ward has confirmed that balance work continued between weekends. In the final Early Access patch note on August 25, the studio wrote:

"We'll be sharing a more detailed update about what we're focused on ahead of this weekend including spawns, TTK and movement."

Here's what is officially confirmed versus what is still unpublished as of writing:

ItemStatus
Open Beta runs Aug 28, 10:00 AM PT → Sep 1, 10:00 AM PT✅ Confirmed (official beta page)
Player level cap raised 20 → 30✅ Confirmed
Additional weapons, equipment, perks and killstreaks unlock✅ Confirmed
Spawn logic improvements live in all modes except Hardpoint✅ Confirmed (Aug 25 notes)
Hardpoint gets dedicated spawn tuning in Weekend 2✅ Confirmed (Aug 25 notes)
10v10 Gunfight on Kill Block returns✅ Confirmed (Aug 24 notes)
Warzone Resurgence map Zodiac added✅ Confirmed
Further TTK and movement changes✅ Confirmed as planned — exact values not yet published
Specific per-weapon Weekend 2 damage numbers⏳ Not published at time of writing
SBMM changes❌ Not confirmed by Infinity Ward

Two practical notes. First, patch notes are updated every full day of the Open Beta, so the numbers above will move — Infinity Ward said it will "be back with more Patch Notes updates right here every full day of the Open Beta." Second, XP does not roll over: any XP earned after you hit Weekend 1's Level 20 cap did not carry into Weekend 2, so the climb to 30 starts from where your level stood, not from banked XP. Full breakdown in our MW4 beta level cap and rewards guide.

Note that TTK and aim assist are separate systems — slowing TTK doesn't touch rotational aim assist strength. If that's your actual complaint, our MW4 aim assist explainer covers what's confirmed there.

What do players actually think about MW4's TTK?

Community reaction across r/CODWarzone and r/CallOfDuty through the beta has been broadly supportive of slower kill times, but with two consistent caveats.

The dominant thread is that close-range TTK still isn't slow enough. One player reported measuring the M4 in the Firing Range at roughly 0.22 seconds to kill; the most-upvoted MW4 TTK thread of the week argued the beta's 500–600ms close-range band should move back toward the 700–800ms feel of Modern Warfare III. Several replies also pointed out that Warzone's armour plates change the maths entirely, so multiplayer TTK complaints don't map cleanly onto battle royale.

The counter-argument is more interesting: a large share of players say TTK is a symptom, not the disease. Recurring points blame spawn placement, netcode, and movement speed — the argument being that fast TTK only feels unfair when you're spawning inside an enemy's sightline or getting slid past. Notably, Infinity Ward's own patch notes agree on at least the first of those, admitting on August 23: "Based on what we're seeing, we need to improve. We're focused on refining spawn placements and logic across all maps and modes." If you want the mechanics side of that debate, our MW4 movement systems guide breaks down what changed.

A third strand — lobby difficulty — is really a matchmaking question rather than a balance one; we covered it separately in our MW4 SBMM and open matchmaking explainer.

FAQ

Did Infinity Ward increase the TTK in the Modern Warfare 4 beta? Yes. Infinity Ward pushed three separate rounds of TTK-raising changes on August 22, 23 and 24, 2026. The August 24 patch notes state directly that the update "includes adjustments that increase the minimum TTK for several weapons." More TTK changes are confirmed as planned for Open Beta Weekend 2, but the exact values had not been published at time of writing.

Which weapon was nerfed hardest in the MW4 beta? By raw damage, the FiNN LMG — its maximum damage dropped from 39 to 33 (−15%), medium from 32 to 28, minimum from 28 to 24, plus a headshot multiplier cut from 1.5x to 1.3x. By headshot multiplier alone, the M4 took the biggest single hit, falling from 1.5x to 1.2x.

Do the beta weapon nerfs carry over to the MW4 launch build? Not necessarily. Beta balance is explicitly test data — Infinity Ward has said it is "identifying weapons that are killing too fast and adjusting based on feedback and in-game data." Expect further tuning between the Open Beta and the October 23, 2026 launch. Treat every number in this guide as the current beta state, not final launch values.

Were any attachments buffed alongside the weapon nerfs? Yes. The Holo, Mini Reflex and Reflex optics, the Bipod, and both underbarrel launcher and underbarrel shotgun attachments had their ADS speed penalties removed entirely. The Angled Grip's ADS penalty dropped from +28ms to +22ms and the Vertical Grip's from +22ms to +18ms, with a 17% jog-speed and 50% strafe-speed benefit added.

Does MW4 beta progress and XP carry between Weekend 1 and Weekend 2? Your Player Level carries over, but banked XP does not. Activision's beta blog states that earning XP once you've hit a weekend's level cap will not go toward the second weekend. Weekend 1 capped at Level 20 and Weekend 2 raises the cap to Level 30.

Is the Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta free? Yes. Open Beta Weekend 2 runs August 28 at 10:00 AM PT through September 1 at 10:00 AM PT and requires no pre-order, on PS5, Xbox Series XS, PC (Battle.net, Xbox on PC, Steam) and Nintendo Switch 2.
