The Modern Warfare 4 Beta has a hard ceiling on how far you can rank up — and it is different in each weekend. If you are grinding for the "Dread Tiger" skin or the Level 30 "Beta Forged" blueprint, you need to know exactly where the cap sits, what unlocks at each rank, and why the XP you earn after hitting the cap is wasted. Here is every confirmed number, straight from Activision's official Beta blog.
Updated August 27, 2026 — Weekend Two (Open Beta) goes live tomorrow, Friday August 28 at 10:00 AM PT and runs to 10:00 AM PT on Tuesday, September 1. Preload has been open on every platform since Wednesday, August 26, 9:00 AM PT, and no pre-order or Beta code is required. This update also corrects the single most-repeated myth about the Weekend Two cap (your Player Level does carry over — see below), confirms the Level 30 blueprint weapon, and adds every Weekend One balance patch Activision shipped between August 22 and 24.

Quick Answer: What Is the MW4 Beta Level Cap?
TL;DR: The Modern Warfare 4 Beta level cap is Level 20 during Weekend One (Early Access, Aug 21–25) and rises to Level 30 during Weekend Two (Open Beta, Aug 28–Sept 1). Weekend One unlocks the first 5 of 8 milestone Beta Rewards; Weekend Two unlocks all 8, plus five extra weapons, new Perks, Killstreaks, and modes. Once you hit each weekend's cap you can keep playing, but you cannot rank up further. Your Player Level itself does carry into Weekend Two — finish Weekend One at 20 and you resume at 20, not 1 — but overflow XP earned after you hit the cap is voided, so there is no banked head start on Level 21. Cosmetic Beta Rewards you unlock are tied to your Activision Account and reappear in the full game at launch on October 23, 2026; your in-beta weapon and level progression resets when the Beta ends.
This is the single most important thing to understand about the Beta grind: the cap is per-weekend, and progression is not continuous. Below is the full breakdown of both caps, the complete reward ladder, and the fastest path to Level 30.
Level 20 vs Level 30: Why Two Different Caps?
The MW4 Beta runs across two weekends, and Activision deliberately gated progression so returning players still have something to chase in Weekend Two.
- Weekend One — Early Access (Aug 21, 11:00 AM PT → Aug 25, 10:00 AM PT): Requires a pre-order/pre-purchase or a redeemed Beta Code. Player Level is capped at 20. Not available on Nintendo Switch 2.
- Weekend Two — Open Beta (Aug 28, 10:00 AM PT → Sept 1, 10:00 AM PT): Free for everyone, no pre-order or code needed, and available on every platform including Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. The cap is raised to 30.
Straight from the source:
"Weekend One allows progression to Player Level 20, while Weekend Two raises the level cap to 30, granting access to the remaining gameplay unlocks and Beta Rewards." — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta blog, Activision (callofduty.com)
The practical takeaway: if you played Early Access and pushed to Level 20, you do resume at Level 20 in Weekend Two. Activision is explicit that the Beta is one continuous ladder with a ceiling that moves, not two separate runs — a point a lot of coverage has gotten backwards. The key is understanding what the extra ten levels actually give you.
Does Progress Carry Over Between Beta Weekends?
Your Player Level carries over. Overflow XP does not. These are two different things, and conflating them is the most common error in MW4 Beta coverage — including, until this update, in an earlier version of this guide. Here is the exact split, from Activision's own Beta blog.
Your level persists. The Beta install and your progression are shared across both weekends:
"If you're joining both Beta weekends, you only need to install the Beta once, as any updates and progression will carry over into Weekend Two." — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta blog, Activision
And the Weekend Two framing is a continuation, not a restart:
"Return for Weekend Two to continue progressing through Level 30 and unlock the remaining gameplay items and Beta Rewards." — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta blog, Activision
Overflow XP does not persist. Once you are sitting at the Level 20 ceiling, the XP you keep earning has nowhere to go — it is not stored as a buffer that dumps into Levels 21–30 when the cap lifts on Friday:
"You can continue to play once you've hit the Player Level cap, you will just not be able to level up any further than each weekend's cap. Earning XP once you've hit the Player Level cap will not go toward the second weekend." — Call of Duty official Beta blog
So a player who capped at Level 20 on the Saturday of Early Access starts Weekend Two at Level 20 with zero progress toward 21 — the level is kept, the surplus XP is gone. The practical rule: burn your Double XP tokens and your best XP playlists before you touch the ceiling, never after.
Two related resets people mix into this, which are separate again:
- Between weekends: nothing resets. Same install, same level, same unlocks.
- When the Beta ends (Sept 1): gameplay progression resets. Player Level and weapon unlocks do not travel to the retail game — only cosmetic Beta Rewards do.
For the fastest routes to the cap, see our dedicated guide on how to level up fast in the Modern Warfare 4 Beta.
The Full MW4 Beta Reward Ladder (All 8 Milestones)
Eight Player Levels are flagged as Beta Rewards — cosmetic unlocks that carry into the full game. Here is the confirmed ladder from Activision's Beta blog:
| Player Level | Beta Reward | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 | "Through the Paces" Legendary Emblem | One |
| Level 8 | "First Served" Weapon Charm | One |
| Level 12 | "Meonjeo" Legendary Weapon Sticker | One |
| Level 16 | "Last Charge" Legendary Calling Card | One |
| Level 20 | "Dread Tiger" Operator Skin – Reece | One (cap) |
| Level 23 | "Field Tested" Epic Spray | Two |
| Level 26 | "Beta Rights" Epic Loading Screen | Two |
| Level 30 | "Beta Forged" Weapon Blueprint | Two (cap) |
Resolved: the Level 30 blueprint is for the Han 86 Assault Rifle. Early beta coverage split on this, because one Activision progression table appeared to attach "Beta Forged" to the ISO Nightshade SMG. The official PlayStation Blog post published alongside the Beta settles it, naming "the Dread Tiger Operator Skin for Reece and the Level 30 Beta Forged Weapon Blueprint for the Han 86 Assault Rifle" — wording matched by Activision's own Weekend One Intel blog. If a page still tells you it is an ISO Nightshade blueprint, it is running the superseded early-coverage error. Either way, reaching Level 30 is the only way to earn it.
Beyond the milestone ladder there are extras. Twitch Drops are the easiest three, and they are watch-time only — link your Activision and Twitch accounts, then earn the "Get Tactical" Emblem at 15 minutes, the "Clearing House" Calling Card at 30 minutes, and the "Action Ready" Charm at 45 minutes watched. There is also a Clockwork Charm for the Mobility Course Challenge and Combat Record rewards.
One thing to be careful about: the free Black Ops 7 Season 05 Battle Pass offer (or 10 Tier Skips if you already own it) was scoped to Weekend One players who played a Multiplayer match on a linked Activision ID. Activision has not extended it to the Open Beta weekend, so if you see a post telling you to play the open beta for a free Battle Pass, that is a Weekend One offer being recycled.
What Changed After Weekend One (Every Beta Patch)
Weekend One was not a static build. Infinity Ward shipped balance patches on three consecutive days, and the Level 21–30 weapons you are about to unlock have already been tuned. If you are planning a Level 30 grind around the Weekend One meta, this is what moved:
| Date | Key changes |
|---|---|
| Aug 22 | Enemy footstep and gear audio volume decreased, audible distance reduced. ISO Nightshade: more damage falloff at range, lower headshot multiplier. Oris 8.6: shorter range before falloff, lower headshot multiplier. Frangible Rounds: slow duration −26.8%, slow magnitude −21.4%. Added map Cachette and mode Inflation; map voting enabled at four maps. |
| Aug 23 | Added map Lotus, 3v3 Gunfight on Kill Block, and a Transit 24/7 playlist. Attack Helicopter health −45%. Headshot multipliers cut: M4 1.5 → 1.2, Patriot XMR 1.42 → 1.22. ISO Nightshade recoil increased. Vertical Grip strafe benefit +50%; ADS speed penalty removed from Holo, Mini Reflex and Reflex optics. |
| Aug 24 | Damage-range nerfs to Han 86, Kastov 762, M4, PPSh-41 and MAR-9. Han 86 headshot multiplier 1.4x → 1.25x; Kastov 762 1.48x → 1.35x; PPSh-41 neck multiplier 1.1x → 1x; MAR-9 neck multiplier 1.2x → 1.1x. |
Infinity Ward was unusually direct about why, in a statement issued with the first patch:
"We heard you loud and clear on the footstep volume, so we've adjusted things downward for today. We've been following the conversation and agree that time-to-kill (TTK) isn't quite right yet, so we've tuned down the lethality of some of our guns to start." — Infinity Ward, MW4 Beta patch notes, August 22, 2026
For Weekend Two, Infinity Ward has said it is going further on minimum TTK, movement, weapon balance, aim assist and Hardpoint spawns. The studio has confirmed the categories but has not published the numbers, so treat any page quoting exact Weekend Two aim-assist values as speculation. Notably, the same update said nothing about SBMM — though Activision has confirmed Open Playlist (reduced-SBMM) options are in the Beta, and "Open Moshpit" appeared in the Weekend One playlist rotation. Our MW4 SBMM and open matchmaking guide covers what is actually known there.
One more number worth having before you plan your weekend: the Beta peaked at 115,145 concurrent Steam players on August 21 and fell to under 38,000 by the end of Early Access — a drop of more than 65% across the weekend, per SteamDB tracking. That figure excludes all console players and measures concurrents rather than unique players, but it means Weekend Two lobbies are getting a large influx of first-time-on-Switch-2 and free-access players. Expect lower average lobby skill on Friday than you saw on Monday.

What Do You Actually Unlock From Level 21 to 30?
The extra ten levels in Weekend Two are not just cosmetics — this is where the Beta hands you a chunk of the arsenal and your tactical toolkit. Confirmed unlocks on the Weekend Two track include:
- Level 21 — Kastov 762 (Assault Rifle): a full-auto 7.62x39mm rifle with heavy per-shot impact and firm recoil.
- Level 23 — .50 GS (Pistol) + Heartbeat Sensor (Tactical).
- Level 24 — Ghost (Perk: undetectable by enemy UAVs, Portable Radars, and Heartbeat Sensors) + Missile Salvo Killstreak.
- Level 25 — Patriot XMR (Assault Rifle): high-impact mid-to-long-range rifle that rewards controlled fire.
- Level 26 — Combat Drone Killstreak (5 kills) + Thermite.
- Level 27 — X-58 (SMG): an integrally suppressed subsonic SMG with very low recoil.
- Level 28 — Battle Hardened (Perk: reduces enemy Tacticals).
- Level 30 — Signal 50 (.50 Cal Sniper Rifle) + Cold-Blooded (Perk) + the "Beta Forged" blueprint.

Does Any of This Carry Into the Full Game?
Yes and no — the split matters:
- Cosmetic Beta Rewards (carry): The eight milestone unlocks, plus challenge and Twitch Drop cosmetics, are tied to your Activision Account and become available when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026. Sign in with your Activision Account before playing so nothing is lost.
- Gameplay progression (resets): Your Player Level, weapon unlocks, and other in-Beta progression reset when the Beta concludes. You are not building a head start on your launch account's rank.
This is the same account-linked model that governs the wider carry-forward question. For how progress, Warzone, and unlocks move into MW4 at launch, read does your progress carry over to Modern Warfare 4.
Fastest Way to Reach the Level 30 Cap
Because the cap is per-weekend and XP does not roll over, efficiency inside each window is everything. Activision's own progression tips plus the beta meta point to a clear plan:
- Rush Level 4 first to unlock Create a Class — Default Loadouts are handed out early, but custom loadouts (and better XP efficiency) start at Level 4.
- Bank Daily Challenges before you deploy. New Daily Challenges refresh each day and many stack, so clearing them mid-match is bonus XP on top of your normal grind.
- Play objective-heavy modes. Modes with continuous score events out-earn pure Team Deathmatch over a session — the classic CoD XP-per-minute truth.
- Use your Double XP tokens strategically — spend them while you are still below the cap, never after, or the boosted XP is wasted.
- Come back for Weekend Two. Ten of the levels (21–30) and the best rewards are Weekend-Two exclusive. If you only play Early Access, the Level 30 blueprint is impossible.
Grinding to Level 30 in a short beta window is a real time sink — and for players who want the reward chase without the multiplayer slog, our MW4 account leveling and weapon leveling services carry over to the full game when it releases.
Lock in your MW4 setup before launch — bot lobbies, camo + weapon leveling ready day one:

FAQ
What is the max level in the Modern Warfare 4 Beta? The cap is Level 20 during Weekend One (Early Access, Aug 21–25) and Level 30 during Weekend Two (Open Beta, Aug 28–Sept 1). You cannot rank past each weekend's ceiling, though you can keep playing after you hit it.
Does XP carry over from Weekend One to Weekend Two? No. Once you hit a weekend's Player Level cap, any further XP is not counted and does not bank toward the next weekend, per Activision's official Beta blog. Spend Double XP tokens before you cap.
Do my Beta rewards and level carry into the full game? Cosmetic Beta Rewards (the eight milestone unlocks, challenge cosmetics, and Twitch Drops) are tied to your Activision Account and become available at launch on October 23, 2026. Your in-Beta Player Level and weapon unlocks reset when the Beta ends.
How do I unlock the "Beta Forged" blueprint? Reach Player Level 30, which is only possible during Weekend Two (Open Beta). It is a blueprint for the Han 86 Assault Rifle, confirmed by both the PlayStation Blog Beta post and Activision's Weekend One Intel blog. Reports naming an ISO Nightshade SMG blueprint are an early-coverage error.
Is it worth grinding to Level 30 in the Beta? If you want the exclusive cosmetic rewards and want to test the full Level 21–30 arsenal (Kastov 762, Patriot XMR, Signal 50, Ghost, Cold-Blooded), yes. Remember gameplay progress resets — only the cosmetics and account-linked rewards survive to launch.
Can I reach Level 30 in Weekend One? No. Weekend One is hard-capped at Level 20. The final three reward tiers (Levels 23, 26, and 30) are Weekend-Two exclusive.
Do I start back at Level 1 in Weekend Two? No. Your Player Level carries over — Activision states that "any updates and progression will carry over into Weekend Two," and describes Weekend Two as a chance to "continue progressing through Level 30." If you finished Early Access at the Level 20 cap, you resume at 20. The only thing you lose is XP you banked after hitting the cap, which is voided rather than carried.
What time does the Weekend Two level cap unlock? The Open Beta opens at 10:00 AM PT on Friday, August 28 (1:00 PM ET / 6:00 PM BST / 7:00 PM CEST) with the Level 30 cap already active, and closes at 10:00 AM PT on Tuesday, September 1 — a four-day window. Note the start time differs from Weekend One, which opened an hour later at 11:00 AM PT. Preload has been available since 9:00 AM PT on Wednesday, August 26. Activision has not published a per-platform download size, so budget 40–70 GB of SSD space; MW4 requires an SSD and will not run from a mechanical drive. If the client refuses to launch or update, our MW4 beta not working fixes and Secure Boot / TPM 2.0 error fix cover the two failure modes that cost people the most playtime on day one.
Does anything I unlock in the Beta carry into Modern Warfare 4 at launch? Only cosmetics. Activision's wording is that "cosmetic Beta Rewards earned during the Beta are tied to your Activision Account and will be available when Modern Warfare 4 launches, while gameplay progression resets when the Beta concludes." So the eight milestone unlocks, Twitch Drops and challenge cosmetics survive to October 23 — your Player Level, rank and weapon unlocks do not. Before you grind, it is worth checking our best MW4 PC settings for FPS, since frame rate does more for your XP-per-hour than any playlist choice, and the MW4 beta camo rewards guide for the unlocks that sit outside the level ladder.
