Is Once Human Isles of Abyss PvP or PvE? What the Studio Actually Confirmed (2026)

Once Human: Isles of Abyss is a PvE scenario, not a PvP one. Every official description Starry Studio has published — the May 2026 Pioneer Test post, the August 2026 Final Test post, and the October launch reveal — calls it a "new survival scenario" and a "maritime survival challenge" where you explore islands, gather resources, build facilities, and fight threats from the environment and mysterious enemies. That is textbook PvE. There is no confirmed player-versus-player mode inside Isles of Abyss. If you've seen it tagged "PvP" on a wiki or an aggregator, that tag is unverified — the studio has never used the word. Here's exactly what "enemies" means in this scenario, why the confusion exists, and where PvP actually lives in Once Human if that's what you're after.

Quick answer: PvP or PvE?

  • Isles of Abyss is PvE. Officially a "new survival scenario" / "maritime survival challenge." You fight the ocean, the weather, sea monsters and a deep-sea boss — not other players.
  • The "enemies" are AI, not humans. The official text says you'll "confront threats from the environment and mysterious enemies." In Once Human's language, "enemies" means Deviated creatures, monsters and environmental hazards — the same PvE threat model as Manibus or The Way of Winter.
  • No PvP mode has been announced or shown for it. As of September 27, 2026, no official page describes ganking, open-world PvP, or a competitive faction mode inside Isles of Abyss.
  • PvP still exists elsewhere. If you want PvP, Once Human already has dedicated PvP scenarios — Evolution's Call and Prismverse's Clash — that are separate, named servers you choose at scenario selection.
- It launches October 22, 2026 (October 21 PT), free, on PS5/PS5 Pro, Xbox Series XS (including Game Pass), PC and mobile, with full cross-play and cross-progression.

New to how Once Human is structured? Isles of Abyss is a scenario, not a season — a self-contained world you sign up for on its own server.

What the studio actually said

The cleanest way to settle a PvP-or-PvE question is to read the developer's own words, not a third-party tag. Starry Studio has described Isles of Abyss the same way in every official post it has published about the scenario.

From the official Isles of Abyss Final Test Recruitment notice (oncehuman.game, August 28, 2026):

"The Isles of Abyss scenario will present players with a brand-new maritime survival challenge. Metas will explore a cluster of scattered islands, gather resources amidst dynamic weather and day-night cycles, build facilities, and confront threats from the environment and mysterious enemies."

The earlier Pioneer Test post (oncehuman.game, May 22, 2026) uses near-identical language — "a brand-new maritime survival challenge… explore a cluster of scattered islands, gather resources amidst dynamic weather and day-night cycles, build facilities, and confront threats from the environment and mysterious enemies" — and adds that the test exists "to validate the core game mode loop, system stability, and story pacing."

Three things stand out, and all three point to PvE:

  • "Survival challenge" and "survival scenario" are the studio's category label for PvE content. Once Human's PvE flagship, Manibus, is described the same way.
  • The threats are "the environment and mysterious enemies." No mention of other players, factions, raiding rival bases, or open-world combat between people. The named late-game threat aggregators have reported — a deep-sea entity often called "The Sunken Lord" — is a monster boss, i.e. PvE.
  • The loop is "explore, gather, build, confront threats." That is the survival-crafting loop, not a competitive PvP loop.

Nothing in any official Isles of Abyss communication describes a player-versus-player mode. When a studio wants PvP, it says so loudly — as Once Human does for its actual PvP scenarios.

Why people think it might be PvP

If the official text is this clear, why is "Isles of Abyss PvP or PvE" even a search? A few honest reasons:

  • Once Human genuinely has PvP scenarios. Because Evolution's Call and Prismverse's Clash exist, a new player reasonably assumes any new scenario might be PvP. It's a fair question — the answer just happens to be no this time.
  • "Confront threats… mysterious enemies" reads ambiguously out of context. Skim-read, "enemies" can sound like other players. In Once Human's vocabulary it means AI monsters and Deviated creatures.
  • The NDA closed beta hid the details. The Pioneer and Final tests were both confidential, NDA-bound, data-wipe betas — no legal screenshots, streams or leaks. When official detail is scarce, aggregators fill the gap with guesses, and a few tagged it PvP without a source.
  • "Sea monsters" and "hostile regions" sound like conflict. They are — just player-versus-environment conflict. Hostile sea regions and a final boss are hard PvE content, not PvP.

The takeaway: treat any "PvP" label you see on Isles of Abyss as unconfirmed unless it links to an official Once Human page. As of this writing, none does.

What "enemies" means in a PvE scenario

Isles of Abyss deep-sea shipwreck and ocean environment in Once Human — the survival setting you explore and gather in

Once Human is a survival game built around fighting Deviations (the game's mutated creatures) and environmental hazards. In a PvE scenario, "enemies" is always that AI threat model. For Isles of Abyss specifically, the confirmed and reported threats are all environmental or monster-based:

  • The ocean itself — dynamic weather, storms and day-night cycles that the official text calls out as survival pressure. Your ship and your stamina are as much at risk from the sea as from anything with teeth.
  • Sea monsters and deep-sea creatures — the scenario's headline threat, matching the studio's "mysterious enemies" line and the "Year of the Monsters" theme it branded 2026 with.
  • A deep-sea final boss — reported by multiple outlets as the scenario's climax encounter (commonly referred to as "The Sunken Lord"). A raid-style monster fight is the definition of PvE endgame.
  • Hostile island and sea regions — zones with tougher enemies and harsher conditions, gating progression the way high-tier areas do in existing scenarios.

None of that is another human trying to kill you. It's the survival-crafting-combat loop scaled onto an ocean.

Where PvP actually lives in Once Human

A player with a firearm in Once Human's Evolution's Call PvP scenario — where player-versus-player combat actually happens, separate from Isles of Abyss

If you came looking for PvP, you're not out of luck — you just want a different scenario. Once Human keeps PvP in dedicated, clearly-labelled scenarios you pick at character creation, so PvE players never get dropped into PvP by accident:

  • Evolution's Call — the main open-world PvP scenario. Combat between players is part of the ruleset.
  • Prismverse's Clash — a faction-based PvP scenario, structured around competing groups.

These run on their own servers with their own phase cycles, exactly like PvE scenarios do. Choosing PvE (Manibus, The Way of Winter, Endless Dream, and now Isles of Abyss) or PvP (Evolution's Call, Prismverse's Clash) is a decision you make when you sign up for a server — it isn't something a single scenario flips on you mid-run.

There is also RaidZone, a PvP spin-off mode where every player starts at Level 50 with no carried-in gear — a fair-start, scavenge-and-fight format. It's separate from the main scenario roster. If you picked it by accident and are wondering why your character starts at Level 50, that's covered in our character missing / "Level 50 save" fix.

How Isles of Abyss fits the scenario system

Understanding that Isles of Abyss is a scenario — not a season, not a patch — is the key to the whole PvP-or-PvE question. Once Human doesn't run one global world. It runs many scenarios, each a themed world with its own map, rules and progression, hosted on servers you sign up for. A server advances through numbered phases over roughly nine to ten weeks, ending in a settlement phase — and permanent, no-wipe servers exist too.

Isles of Abyss is a new PvE scenario joining that roster. That means:

  • You opt into it. It appears in scenario selection as its own choice. You aren't forced out of your current Manibus or Winter run.
  • It follows PvE rules. Its threat model, progression and combat are player-versus-environment, like the other survival scenarios.
- Cross-play and cross-progression apply. Like every current scenario, Isles of Abyss supports full cross-play across PS5/PS5 Pro, Xbox Series XS, PC and mobile, with cross-progression via account linking. A PS5 and a PC player can survive the ocean together on the same server.

If the scenario-and-server model is new to you, our what carries over and what resets when a scenario ends guide breaks down how progress moves between runs — and it applies to Isles of Abyss the same as any other PvE scenario.

Should you play it if you only like PvE (or only like PvP)?

If you're a PvE / survival-crafting player: Isles of Abyss is built for you. A fresh ocean map, ship-building from raft to mobile sea base, aquatic vehicles, sea monsters and a deep-sea boss — all PvE, all on a brand-new scenario. It's the biggest content drop the studio has shipped, and it's free.

If you only want PvP: Isles of Abyss isn't your scenario. Stick with Evolution's Call or Prismverse's Clash, or drop into RaidZone for fast fair-start fights. There's nothing wrong with skipping a PvE launch if PvP is your thing — the roster is built so you can.

If you like both: you can run Isles of Abyss for the new PvE content and keep a PvP server going in parallel. Different scenarios, different servers, one account. Just remember each server has its own phase clock.

FAQ

Is Once Human Isles of Abyss PvP or PvE? It is PvE. Every official description from Starry Studio calls it a "survival scenario" and a "maritime survival challenge" where you confront threats from the environment and mysterious enemies — the game's standard PvE threat model. No official source describes a player-versus-player mode inside Isles of Abyss.

Are there sea monsters or bosses in Isles of Abyss? Yes. The scenario centers on hostile sea regions, sea monsters, and a deep-sea final boss (widely reported as "The Sunken Lord"). These are AI enemies — part of what makes it PvE endgame content, not PvP.

Can other players attack me in Isles of Abyss? There is no confirmed player-versus-player combat in Isles of Abyss. Because it's a PvE scenario, the danger comes from the environment and monsters. If you want players to be able to fight you, you'd choose a PvP scenario like Evolution's Call or Prismverse's Clash instead.

Which Once Human scenarios are PvP? Evolution's Call and Prismverse's Clash are the dedicated PvP scenarios, and RaidZone is a separate PvP spin-off mode. The PvE scenarios include Manibus, The Way of Winter, Endless Dream and now Isles of Abyss. You choose PvE or PvP when you sign up for a server.

When does Isles of Abyss release and is it free? It launches October 22, 2026 (October 21 PT) as a free update, on PS5/PS5 Pro, Xbox Series XS (including Xbox Game Pass), PC and mobile, all at once, with full cross-play and cross-progression.

Do I have to leave my current scenario to play Isles of Abyss? No. Isles of Abyss is a separate scenario you opt into at scenario selection. Your existing Manibus, Way of Winter or other runs continue on their own servers — starting Isles of Abyss is a choice, not a forced migration.

Everything above is checked against Starry Studio's official Once Human posts (Isles of Abyss Pioneer Test, May 22, 2026; Final Test Recruitment, August 28, 2026; and the October launch reveal).
