PoE Currency Flipping Guide (3.29): How to Make Currency by Trading

Flipping is how you make Path of Exile currency without farming a single map — you buy currency below its market rate and resell it at the rate, pocketing the spread. In 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" the in-game Currency Exchange turned this from a tedious chat-spam grind into a near-passive order book that even fills while you're offline. This guide covers both flipping engines (the Currency Exchange and the player-trade site), the Divine/Chaos spread that most flips are built on, the 3.29-specific trade changes, and the pitfalls that quietly eat your profit.

Quick answer: Currency flipping means capturing the spread between what sellers will take and what buyers will pay. The fastest, lowest-effort path in 3.29 is the Currency Exchange (NPC Faustus in Kingsmarch) — set a want/have order at a market ratio, let it fill (even offline), and resell. The classic method is the official trade site (pathofexile.com/trade) with a public Premium Stash Tab: buy bulk Divines/Chaos cheap, relist at market. Both need starting capital and both charge a Gold fee or require a paid tab, so thin spreads can vanish. Never quote a fixed Divine:Chaos rate — it floats all league; verify live on poe.ninja.

Applies to Path of Exile league 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame" (live since 24 July 2026, latest patch 3.29.3b). The trading systems below are evergreen 3.25-era mechanics, so this guide stays accurate into the next league — but always price against poe.ninja for the current economy.

What is currency flipping in PoE?

Path of Exile has no gold-for-trade economy — everything is bartered in currency orbs, and those orbs have floating exchange rates against each other. Flipping exploits the gap between the lowest sell order and the highest buy order for a currency. Buy at the bottom of that gap, sell at the top, and the difference is your profit. You never touch a monster.

There are two places to do it:

  • The Currency Exchange — the in-game bulk market (added in the 3.25 Settlers of Kalguur era, still live in 3.29). Lowest effort, fills automatically, but charges a Gold fee per trade.
  • The official trade site (pathofexile.com/trade) — player-to-player. More manual, needs a paid Premium Stash Tab to list, but you set your own margins and can capture bigger spreads on bulk deals.

Most profitable flippers run both: they arbitrage the price difference between the two markets.

"Trading with other players is one of the most important aspects of Path of Exile." — Maxroll, Trading Guide for Beginners

How does the Currency Exchange work?

The Currency Exchange is accessed through Faustus in Kingsmarch (the Settlers town). It's a ratio-based order book: you choose the currency you want to receive and the currency you're paying with, set a market ratio, and submit. Your order either fills immediately against existing stock at your rate or better, or it rests as a listing until someone matches it.

Per Maxroll's market guide: "Hovering over the Market Ratio shows you a number of the best ratios currently listed to fulfill your exchange." That hover is your whole flipping dashboard — it tells you the current spread at a glance.

Three things make it the default flipping engine in 3.29:

  • It fills while you're offline. Maxroll: "If you are offline or happen to miss this notification, Faustus displays this icon in your Hideout to notify you of completed Currency Exchanges." You set an order, log off, come back to filled currency.
  • No Premium Stash Tab required. Unlike the trade site, you don't need to buy anything to use it.
  • It's asynchronous. No whispers, no "sorry, sold," no travelling to a stranger's hideout.

The catch is the Gold fee. Maxroll: "When you increase the amount of currency you are trading, the Gold cost for the exchange increases proportionally." Gold is earned through normal play across Wraeclast and the Kingsmarch settlement — and critically, Gold cannot be traded between players (it's account-bound), so you can't buy your way around the fee. If your spread is razor-thin, the Gold cost can turn a "profit" into a loss. Always size the fee into the margin before you submit.

How do you flip on the official trade site?

The player-trade method is older, more manual, and still where the biggest bulk margins live. The loop:

  • Get a public Premium Stash Tab. Maxroll is blunt about the prerequisite: "To list an item for sale you need to purchase a premium tab, or a program that puts items on the forums for you." The cheapest route is upgrading a single tab to Premium with points, then right-clicking it to set it public and priceable.
  • Find underpriced bulk orders on pathofexile.com/trade — specifically the bulk item exchange section, where whole stacks of Divines or Chaos are sold at a ratio.
  • Buy low, relist at market. Snap up a stack listed below the going rate, drop it in your public tab, and price it at or just under market so it sells fast.
  • The buyer travels to you. In player trade the purchaser comes to your hideout — you don't chase anyone.

The skill here is reading the ratio: the trade site and the Currency Exchange frequently disagree on price by a few percent, and that gap is a free flip if you can move currency between the two faster than the market corrects.

The Divine / Chaos spread — the engine of most flips

Nearly every currency flip is built on the two pillars of the PoE economy. Maxroll frames the hierarchy cleanly: "Chaos Orbs are the standard unit of trade. Think of Chaos Orbs as $1 and Divine Orbs as $100." Chaos is the workhorse you quote small items in; Divine is the premier high-value store of wealth.

The Divine-in-Chaos price floats all league long. Early in a league Divines are scarce and expensive in Chaos; as the league matures and currency floods in, the ratio shifts. That movement is the flip:

  • Ratio flip: accumulate the currency the market is undervaluing and offload it when the ratio swings back.
  • Cross-market arbitrage: when the Currency Exchange ratio and the trade-site bulk ratio diverge, buy on the cheaper market and sell on the richer one.

Do not memorise a number. The whole point is that the rate moves. Pull the live Divine:Chaos ratio from poe.ninja (current 3.29 league) before every session — a flip priced off last week's ratio is how you lose currency.

What changed for trading in 3.29?

Three 3.29 patch-note changes directly help flippers, all verified against the official forum notes:

  • Chart trade-market Gold fee slashed (3.29.1). Verbatim from the 3.29.1 notes: "Greatly lowered the Gold fee for purchasing Charts on the trade market." If you flip league-mechanic items (Charts), your fee overhead dropped hard.
  • Trade links no longer expire (3.29.3b). From the 3.29.3b notes: "Trade Site search URLs will no longer use short ids, and will instead encode the entire search. This means that these links will no longer expire, and you can share URLs without actually performing the search." You can now save a flipping search and reuse it league after league.
  • Pseudo mods show in results (3.29.3b). Also from 3.29.3b: the trade market now correctly displays pseudo mods in search results — useful when you branch from pure currency flipping into item flipping.

None of these touched the core Divine/Chaos mechanics; the farming and currency facts from earlier in the league still hold.

Is currency flipping against the rules?

Flipping in-game currency for in-game currency is completely legitimate — it's trading, the intended backbone of the economy. What is bannable is real-money trading (RMT). GGG's official policy is unambiguous: "Buying and selling items or accounts for real money or external currencies (such as Forum Gold) is not allowed and we will ban people who attempt to engage in it in-game or on the pathofexile.com forums."

The line is simple: trade orbs for orbs, items for orbs, all inside the game — never real money.

Flipping pitfalls that eat your profit

  • The Gold fee is real. On the Currency Exchange the fee scales with trade size, so high-volume, low-margin flips can net negative once the fee is paid. Price it in first.
  • Thin spreads collapse. Because the ratio floats, a 2% margin can evaporate between the moment you buy and the moment your sell order fills. Keep a buffer.
  • You need capital. Flipping multiplies what you already have; it doesn't create a starting stack. If you're broke, farm a base of currency first, then flip it.
  • Time vs profit. Manual trade-site flipping can out-earn the Currency Exchange per trade but costs attention. If you'd rather play, set Currency Exchange orders and let them fill offline.

If you'd rather skip the grind to a starting stack entirely, you can buy a safe, instant delivery currency base and flip from there.

FAQ

What is currency flipping in Path of Exile? Flipping is making currency by trading rather than farming — you buy a currency below its market rate and resell it at the rate, keeping the spread. It's done on the in-game Currency Exchange and on the official trade site, and most of it revolves around the Divine/Chaos ratio.

How do I use the Currency Exchange in 3.29? Talk to Faustus in Kingsmarch, open the Currency Exchange, pick the currency you want and the currency you're paying, and set a market ratio. The order fills against existing stock or rests until matched — and it completes even while you're offline, with Faustus flagging the result in your hideout. Each trade costs Gold that scales with the amount.

Can I trade Gold to other players to pay the fees? No. Gold is account-bound and cannot be traded between players (added in 3.25 Settlers). You earn it through normal play and the Kingsmarch settlement, and it's the only thing that pays Currency Exchange fees, respecs, and NPC purchases.

Do I need a Premium Stash Tab to flip? Only for the player-trade site — listing items for sale requires a public Premium Stash Tab. The Currency Exchange needs no tab at all, which is why it's the easier entry point for pure currency flipping.

What's the current Divine to Chaos ratio? It floats throughout the league and changes constantly, so any number printed here would be wrong by the time you read it. Check the live rate on poe.ninja for the current 3.29 economy before every flipping session.

Is flipping currency bannable? No — trading in-game currency for in-game currency is the intended economy and completely allowed. What gets you banned is real-money trading: buying or selling currency, items, or accounts for real money or external currencies, which GGG explicitly prohibits.
