How to Beat The Maven in PoE 3.29: Access, Memory Game & Every Phase

The Maven is the first pinnacle boss most Path of Exile players hit a wall on — not because she hits hard, but because her signature memory game punishes panic. Beat her and you walk away with the Ceremonial Voidstone, a huge step toward a fully-upgraded Atlas. This guide covers how to unlock her in league 3.29 "Curse of the Allflame," every phase of the fight, and the mistakes that get exiles killed.

Quick answer: how do you beat The Maven in PoE?

Collect 10 Crescent Splinters from Maven's Invitations across the Atlas to form The Maven's Writ, open it in your Map Device to enter the arena Absence of Mercy and Empathy, then survive 7 alternating phases (four against the Maven, three against the Nucleus). The hardest part is her memory game: she lights up arena sections in a pattern, yells "SCURRY, SCURRY!", and you must run through those sections in the exact order or a blast fills the arena and kills you. Win, and you get an Atlas Passive Skill Tree Point and the Ceremonial Voidstone.

This fight is unchanged in 3.29 — the mechanics below apply to the current league and have for several leagues.

How do you unlock The Maven fight?

You don't buy or find the Maven directly. You earn the right to fight her by letting her witness your boss kills across the Atlas.

Here's the chain:

  • Progress your Atlas and complete Maven's Invitations — encounters where the Maven watches you fight a set of bosses at once.
  • Completing Invitations rewards Crescent Splinters.
  • When you have 10 Crescent Splinters, they merge into The Maven's Writ.
  • Open the Writ in your Map Device, exactly like a map fragment, to enter her arena: Absence of Mercy and Empathy.

The Invitations themselves escalate. The early ones ask you to witness 3, then 4, 5, and 6 bosses in a single fight. Later ones group content by family: The Formed (all four Shaper Guardians), The Twisted (all four Elder Guardians), The Elderslayers (the four Conquerors), and the brutal The Feared.

Is "The Feared" the same as the Maven boss fight?

No — and this trips up a lot of exiles. Maven's Invitation: The Feared is a separate invitation where the Maven forces you to fight several of the game's hardest bosses simultaneously — Uber Atziri, The Elder, The Shaper, Chayula, and Cortex. It's widely called one of the hardest encounters in the game, but you are not fighting the Maven herself in it. The actual Maven pinnacle fight is unlocked by the Writ, not by any single Invitation. Invitations are the source of your Splinters; the Writ is the real key.

The Maven fight: all 7 phases

Per Maxroll's boss guide: "The Maven Fight has 7 Phases. 4 phases in which you fight against the Maven, 3 phases against the Nucleus." The two enemies alternate — you fight the Maven in phases 1, 3, 5, and 7, and the Nucleus in phases 2, 4, and 6.

Fighting the Maven (phases 1, 3, 5, 7)

The Maven's arena during a beam phase — sweeping beams cross the circular Absence of Mercy and Empathy arena

During her phases, the Maven floats above the arena and throws out a rotating set of attacks. The ones that matter:

  • The Memory Game. The Maven teleports to the center, becomes invulnerable, and flashes arena sections purple — three zones in the first memory phase (Phase 3), scaling to six zones in the later phases (6 and 7). When she yells "SCURRY, SCURRY!" you must run through those zones in the exact order she showed them. Each wrong step heavily slows you and speeds up a blast that expands to fill the arena. If the blast completes — or you stand in a charged section — you take massive, usually lethal damage.
  • Rotating Beams. Sweeping beams that apply Maven's Punishment, a debuff that lowers your maximum elemental resistances by 10% and disables all Life and Energy Shield recovery for 10 seconds. You cannot heal through it — you have to not get hit.
  • Volatile Orbs. Orbs drift around the arena; when she shouts "MINE!", they lock on and chase you.
  • Gravity Well. Three Celestial Orbs accelerate across the arena and leave slowing puddles behind them.

Fighting the Nucleus (phases 2, 4, 6)

Between her own phases, the Maven hands off to the Nucleus. The Nucleus channels a lethal area attack (the "Brain Blast") — your job is to reach the outer platforms of the arena before it detonates. Treat the Nucleus phases as positioning puzzles, not DPS races.

Myth check: there is no ability called "Maven's Hand" in this fight, despite the name floating around guides and chat. The one-shots come from the memory-game blast and the Nucleus Brain Blast — learn those two and the fight stops being scary.

How to actually survive the memory game

The Maven's memory-game mechanic: arena sections flash purple in a sequence the player must repeat in order

The memory game is where 90% of Maven deaths happen, and it's almost entirely a focus problem:

  • Stop attacking during the setup. You deal zero damage while she's invulnerable mid-center. Watch the pattern instead of tunnelling your skill.
  • Say the order out loud (or count it). Three zones is easy; six zones at low life is where people blank. Verbalizing forces you to encode it.
  • Move the instant she says "SCURRY, SCURRY!" — not before. Moving early doesn't register; hesitating lets the blast catch up.
  • Build for it. Enough life or ES to eat one mistake, capped chaos/elemental resistances, and a reliable movement skill (Flame Dash, Dash, Shield Charge) to cross zones fast turn a failed pattern from a death into a scare.

If your character physically can't cross the arena in time or dies to a single clipped beam, that's a gearing gap, not a skill gap — a quick resistance/life pass (or a carry, below) fixes it faster than re-rolling the fight ten times.

What does The Maven drop?

Beating the normal Maven for the first time gives you, per Maxroll: "an Atlas Passive Skill Tree Point and the Ceremonial Voidstone which can be socketed into your Atlas." That Voidstone is the real prize — it's one of the four stones that upgrade every map you run toward Tier 16.

Her boss-specific drop pool also includes uniques such as Legacy of Fury, Graven's Secret, Doppelgänger Guise, Echoforge, Arn's Anguish, and Olesya's Delight, among others.

How do you unlock and fight Uber Maven?

Once you've killed the normal Maven, you can fight the Uber version by opening 5 Reality Fragments in your Map Device. Uber Maven drops everything the regular version does, plus a tier of chase items on top: Viridi's Veil, Impossible Escape, Progenesis, and Grace of the Goddess, as well as Awakened Empower, Enlighten, and Enhance. Progenesis in particular is a build-defining flask, which is why Uber Maven is one of the most-farmed pinnacle targets in the game.

For current drop values, verify the live rate on poe.ninja — pinnacle-unique prices swing hard across a league and are never static.

Has The Maven changed in 3.29?

No. The official 3.29.0 "Curse of the Allflame" patch notes make zero changes to the Maven fight, her Invitations, the Writ, or the memory game — the encounter is identical to previous leagues. (For context, 3.29 did add Atlas "Anomalies" and trim some maps from the Atlas, so the surrounding endgame has shifted even though the Maven herself has not.) Everything in this guide is current for the league that launched on 24 July 2026 and is still live today.

FAQ

How many Crescent Splinters do you need for the Maven? You need 10 Crescent Splinters, which combine into The Maven's Writ. You open the Writ in your Map Device to enter her arena, Absence of Mercy and Empathy.

What is the Maven's memory game? The Maven becomes invulnerable at the center of the arena and flashes sections purple in a sequence — three zones in the first memory phase, rising to six in the final phases. When she yells "SCURRY, SCURRY!", you must run through the sections in that exact order. Wrong steps slow you and let an expanding blast fill the arena, which kills you if it completes.

What voidstone does the Maven drop? The first normal-Maven kill grants the Ceremonial Voidstone plus an Atlas Passive Skill Tree Point. It's one of the four Voidstones that push your maps toward Tier 16.

How do you unlock Uber Maven? After defeating the normal Maven, open 5 Reality Fragments in your Map Device to access the Uber fight. Uber Maven adds chase drops like Progenesis, Viridi's Veil, and Impossible Escape on top of the regular loot.

Is "The Feared" the Maven boss fight? No. The Feared is a separate Maven's Invitation where you fight Uber Atziri, The Elder, The Shaper, Chayula, and Cortex at once. The Maven herself is fought via the Writ, not the Feared.

Did 3.29 change the Maven? No. The official 3.29.0 patch notes list no changes to the Maven fight, her Invitations, or the memory game. The encounter is the same in Curse of the Allflame as in prior leagues.
