Quick answer (TL;DR): It's official — Grinding Gear Games revealed the Duelist at gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, and announced that Path of Exile 2 leaves Early Access on December 11, 2026 (PST) as a fully free-to-play game on PC (Steam/Epic), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Duelist is PoE2's first sword-wielding class and "a master of both sword and shield." The same 1.0 update ships the final two acts — Acts 5 and 6 — completing the six-act campaign. No Ascendancies have been named yet, and GGG has not officially confirmed the Duelist's attribute pairing or any returning skill names (the trailer's spin attack looks like Cyclone, but GGG never said the word). Free milestone cosmetics are live now via email registration at pathofexile2.com/register, running until December 10 PST. If you're planning to main a fresh sword character on day one, the smart prep is a currency buffer that carries over — PoE2 Divine Orbs or a full currency stack.
For nearly two years, Path of Exile 2's most conspicuous absence has been a weapon category that every ARPG has by default: swords. Eight of twelve planned classes were playable. Spears, crossbows, flails, quarterstaves, sceptres — all in. Blades, nothing. On August 25 at gamescom Cologne, GGG closed that hole and dropped a release date at the same time.
This guide covers exactly what GGG confirmed versus what outlets are guessing, who the Duelist is, what the December 11 free-to-play launch actually changes, how the registration rewards work (several sites have the numbers wrong), and what's worth doing in the ~15 weeks between now and 1.0. Every fact below is checked against GGG's own announcement post and pathofexile2.com.

When does Path of Exile 2 1.0 release?
December 11, 2026 (PST). That's the full 1.0 release, the end of Early Access, and the moment the game becomes free-to-play — all in one drop.
| Detail | Confirmed | |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 release date | December 11, 2026 (PST) | |
| Price at launch | Free-to-play | |
| Platforms | PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PS5, Xbox Series X\ | S |
| New class | Duelist (first sword-wielding class) | |
| New weapon type | Swords | |
| Campaign | Final two acts added → six acts total | |
| Ascendancies revealed | None yet | |
| Registration campaign ends | December 10, 2026 (PST) |
Two anchors for scale: Early Access launched December 6, 2024, so 1.0 lands almost exactly two years and five days later. And the current live build is 0.5.4f — the tail end of the Return of the Ancients expansion (0.5.0), whose challenge league is Runes of Aldur. There is still a 0.5.5 update between now and 1.0, which GGG is previewing on a separate stream (more on that below).
Who is the Duelist in PoE2?
GGG gave the Duelist an actual backstory in the reveal, and it ties him directly into Path of Exile's existing timeline:
"Raised as an orphan in the slums, the Duelist trained relentlessly for a place in the Grand Arena, where he sought vengeance. Forced to flee during the Fall of Oriath, he now fights on behalf of those unable to defend themselves." — Grinding Gear Games, gamescom 2026 announcement
The Fall of Oriath reference matters: it plants him firmly in the aftermath of Path of Exile 1's story. PoE2's campaign opens roughly twenty years after the Exile put Kitava down — the event that closes out PoE1's Fall of Oriath — so a man who fled Oriath during that collapse is a hardened veteran by the time you pick him up in Wraeclast. This is not a reskin of the PoE1 Duelist — it's the same archetype rebuilt for PoE2's combat model.
On mechanics, GGG's wording was short and specific:
"The Duelist is Path of Exile 2's first sword-wielding class, introducing one of the game's most anticipated weapon archetypes to Wraeclast. A master of both sword and shield, he offers players new ways to control the battlefield through fast, aggressive and adaptable melee combat."
Three things to pull out of that sentence:
- "Sword and shield" — the Duelist isn't purely a two-hander glass cannon. Shield interaction (blocks, parries, shield-charge style engages) is being framed as a core part of the kit, not an afterthought.
- "Control the battlefield" — that's positioning language, not just DPS language. Expect movement-and-spacing skills, which is how PoE2 melee already differs from PoE1's stand-and-spin.
- "Fast, aggressive and adaptable" — the pitch is tempo. PoE2's melee has been criticised for feeling committal; the Duelist looks like GGG's answer.
What are the Duelist's Ascendancy classes?
None have been announced. This is the single most-searched follow-up question right now and the honest answer is that GGG has not named a single one.
What we do know is the structure GGG is building toward: twelve classes, each with three Ascendancy specialisations — 36 total. The live 0.5 game is still short of that — eight classes and 22 Ascendancies, with Ranger and Druid missing their third. So the Duelist has three coming, and zero of them are public.
Worth noting while you're counting: the Duelist is the ninth of those twelve. Shadow, Templar and Marauder are the three still unrevealed for PoE2, and GGG said nothing at gamescom about whether any of them land on December 11. Any site currently listing "confirmed Duelist Ascendancies" is extrapolating from PoE1's Slayer/Gladiator/Champion, not reporting.
Same applies to his attribute pairing. GGG's class framework is two classes per attribute and per hybrid pair, and PoE1's Duelist was Strength/Dexterity — so Str/Dex is a very reasonable expectation. But it is not in GGG's announcement, and we're not going to print it as fact.
Which skills were shown in the Duelist trailer?
Be careful here, because this is where a lot of coverage has gotten loose.
What's actually supportable: the trailer's centrepiece sword attack is a spinning, sustained melee whirl that the entire community immediately identified as Cyclone — the beloved PoE1 skill. GamesRadar, which saw the same footage, hedges it as "what appears to be the Cyclone move from the first Path of Exile." GGG's own announcement post and press release never use the word Cyclone. The official forum thread's top replies are a wall of "CYCLONE" and one exile posting simply:
"LET ME SPIN 2 WIN" — HudsonKalil#2019, official Path of Exile forums
So: near-certain, community-identified, not officially named.
What is not supportable: several outlets have written up Lacerate, Dual Strike, and a Stance system (Blood Stance / Sand Stance, mirroring PoE1's Blood and Sand) as if they were part of the reveal. No GGG source names any of them. Treat those as speculation until GGG says otherwise — quite possibly at the August 27 stream.
Is Path of Exile 2 really going free-to-play?
Yes, and this is arguably the bigger commercial story than the class.
Since December 2024, PoE2 has been gated behind Early Access purchase — most commonly a $30 Supporter Pack, which was the sticking point for a lot of PoE1 veterans who expected the sequel to follow the original's fully free model. On December 11 that gate disappears. GGG's long-standing position, restated on the Steam page, is that "Once the game is out of Early Access, Path of Exile 2 will be free-to-play." Steam's own feature list still reads "Fair-To-Play. Never Pay-To-Win.", and "Purchases are shared between the two games" — so your PoE1 microtransactions carry across.
Open question worth flagging: GGG has said nothing yet about compensation, conversion or any specific gesture for people who paid to get into Early Access. There's no published policy. If that matters to you, the August 27 Q&A and ExileCon in November are the two places it's most likely to be addressed.
For anyone running a marketplace-adjacent read on this: a free-to-play launch in the December holiday window, on all three platforms, with a fresh melee class and a completed campaign, is about as large a player-influx event as this genre gets. Expect a hard economy reset and a chaotic first fortnight of currency pricing.

How do the free 1.0 registration rewards work?
GGG is running a community-milestone registration campaign at pathofexile2.com/register, and the details are being misreported in a few places, so here they are straight:
- Everyone who registers gets at least one microtransaction: the Soulflame Crown Helmet Attachment. (Note the spelling — Soulflame, not "Soulframe.")
- Four further rewards unlock at community milestones: 1M, 2M, 3M and 4M registrations. The pool is the Soulflame Weapon Effect, Soulflame Portal, Chained Chimera Wings and the Scourgeborn Boar Pet.
- GGG's own FAQ on how many you're guaranteed: "At least one! The rest of the microtransactions will be unlocked based on registration milestones, meaning that if the community unlocks all four, everyone will receive five microtransactions in total."
- The campaign runs until December 10 PST — the day before launch.
So the ceiling is five cosmetics at 4 million registrations, not "five million registrations." It costs an email address and takes about twenty seconds.
What else is happening before December 11?
Two dates worth putting in your calendar:
- August 27 (PDT) — GGG livestream. Important nuance: this was announced before gamescom and GGG framed it as a preview of 0.5.5, not a 1.0 showcase. Per the official thread: "On August 27 PDT, we'll preview some new information about Path of Exile 2 and 0.5.5!" It airs on twitch.tv/pathofexile and is followed by a Q&A with Game Director Jonathan Rogers and ZiggyD, then the final ExileCon qualifier. If Ascendancies, stances or sword skill names get named anywhere soon, it's here.
- ExileCon 2026, November 7–8 (Aotea Centre, Auckland). GGG's own convention, five weeks before launch — historically where the deep-dive reveals land.
Between those, 0.5.5 still has to ship. It's the last content step before 1.0.
What should you do between now and 1.0?
The Duelist is a fresh-start class in a fresh economy, which changes the prep math compared to a normal league.
- Don't hoard 0.5 league currency expecting it to matter on December 11. A 1.0 launch means new leagues and a reset economy. Value your current stash by what it buys you now, in Runes of Aldur — and read up on what carries over to 1.0 before you plan around it.
- Do finish what you're mid-way through. Atlas completion, pinnacle kills, Ascendancy Trials — that content isn't going anywhere, and clearing it now beats grinding it during launch-week server load.
- Do register. Free cosmetics, twenty seconds, deadline December 10 PST.
- Plan for launch-week trade chaos. First-fortnight pricing on a free-to-play launch with a brand-new weapon type is going to be violent. Sword bases and anything Duelist-adjacent will be inflated by demand while supply is nonexistent.
Get set up before the sword rush:
- PoE2 Divine Orbs — instant delivery, the crafting currency that actually gates your gear
- PoE2 Currency (all orbs) — divine, exalted and chaos in one place
- PoE2 Leveling — skip the campaign grind and get straight into endgame on a new character
- PoE2 Boss & Endgame Carries — pinnacle kills, trials and Atlas progress handled
FAQ
| When does PoE2 1.0 release? December 11, 2026 (PST), on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PS5 and Xbox Series X | S. That date marks the end of Early Access and the switch to free-to-play, all in the same update. |
|---|
Is the Duelist confirmed for PoE2? Yes. GGG revealed the Duelist in a trailer at gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, and confirmed he arrives with the 1.0 full release. He's described officially as PoE2's first sword-wielding class and "a master of both sword and shield."
What are the Duelist's Ascendancy classes in PoE2? Not announced. PoE2's structure is 12 classes × 3 Ascendancies = 36 total, so the Duelist has three coming, but GGG has not named any of them. Anything you see listed today is extrapolated from PoE1's Slayer, Gladiator and Champion, not confirmed.
Is Cyclone in PoE2? Almost certainly, but not officially. The gamescom trailer shows a spinning sword attack that the community and multiple outlets identify as Cyclone, and GamesRadar describes it as "what appears to be the Cyclone move from the first Path of Exile." GGG's own announcement never names the skill.
Will Path of Exile 2 be free to play? Yes — from December 11, 2026. Early Access required a purchase (typically a $30 Supporter Pack); 1.0 removes that entirely. GGG has not published any policy on compensation or conversion for existing Early Access buyers.
How many acts will PoE2 have at launch? Six. Act 4 already shipped during Early Access in patch 0.3.0 "The Third Edict" on August 29, 2025; GGG confirmed that "the final two acts will launch with the 1.0 Full Release" — meaning Acts 5 and 6 complete the campaign at launch.
How do I get the free PoE2 1.0 rewards? Register your email at pathofexile2.com before December 10 PST. Everyone who registers gets the Soulflame Crown Helmet Attachment; four more cosmetics unlock at 1M, 2M, 3M and 4M community registrations, for a maximum of five total.
