Quick answer: In Path of Exile 2 (patch 0.5.5, Forbidden Rites event live since September 4, 2026), clearing rooms in the Trial of Chaos is not enough to get all your Ascendancy points. Beating 4 / 7 / 10 rooms grants points on a ladder up to points 5 & 6 — but points 7 & 8 only unlock when you collect all three Fate fragments, open the Trialmaster's door, and kill him. And if you killed the Trialmaster and still got nothing, you almost certainly walked past the Ascendancy device in his room without interacting with it — the points are not automatic. If you haven't left and re-entered a new instance, you can portal back into the cleared Temple of Chaos and claim them. Below is exactly why each "no points" case happens and how to fix it.
If the Trial itself is the wall, a self-play PoE2 Ascendancy & boss carry gets your points banked without the rage-quits.

Why you got no Ascendancy points (the 3 real causes)
There are only three ways to finish a Trial of Chaos and come away with fewer points than you expected. Every "I did the trial and got nothing" thread on r/PathOfExile2 lands on one of them:
- You only cleared rooms — you never killed the Trialmaster. Rooms alone cap you at points 5 & 6. Points 7 & 8 are gated behind the capstone boss.
- You killed the Trialmaster but never interacted with the Ascendancy device in his room. The kill does not auto-grant the points; you have to activate the statue/device afterward.
- You died, ran out of the room, or the affliction stack killed the run before the reward was locked in. The run fails and you start over.
Here's each one, with the exact fix.
Cause 1: You cleared 10 rooms but the Trialmaster wasn't part of it
This is the single most common one, and it catches new players every league. As one confused player put it after a full clear: "nobody ever said anything about fighting the trialmaster — I also assumed you get ascendancy points from doing 10 floors."
Here is the actual Ascendancy point ladder for the Trial of Chaos (verified against the official Path of Exile 2 wiki and current 0.5.5 data):
| What you clear | Ascendancy points granted |
|---|---|
| 4 rooms | Points 1 & 2 |
| 7 rooms | Points 3 & 4 |
| 10 rooms | Points 5 & 6 |
| 10 rooms + defeat The Trialmaster | Points 7 & 8 |
You get 8 Ascendancy points total, and either Trial (Chaos or the Trial of the Sekhemas) can grant all 8 on its own. But notice the last row: 10 rooms gets you to 6, not 8. The final two are locked behind the boss.
To even reach the Trialmaster you need three Fate fragments, and this is the second thing people miss. The Fates drop from the boss on the 10th room (the round-10 boss — Uxmal, Bahlak, or Chetza depending on the run):
- Cowardly Fate — dropped by Uxmal, The Beastlord
- Deadly Fate — dropped by Bahlak, The Sky Seer
- Victorious Fate — dropped by Chetza, The Feathered Plague
You need all three, and they can appear as easy-to-miss white item drops — several players report killing the round-10 boss, seeing a plain white drop, and leaving it on the floor. Grab everything. Once you hold all three Fates, insert them into the door in the final reward room to open the path to the Trialmaster's Tower.
The fix: if you only cleared rooms, you're not stuck — you have points 5 & 6, and you just need to run a full 10-room Inscribed Ultimatum, kill the 10th-room boss for the three Fates, and then beat the Trialmaster to claim 7 & 8.
Cause 2: You killed the Trialmaster but still got no points
This is the gut-punch one, and it's a UI trap, not a bug. You beat the capstone, the arena clears, you feel done — and you leave. But the Ascendancy points are not awarded on the kill. You have to walk to the Ascendancy claim device in the Trialmaster's room and interact with it to actually receive them.
The community learned this the hard way. In one widely-linked thread, the answer to "no Ascendancy points after defeating Trialmaster" was simply: "Did you click on the Ascendancy statue in the Trialmaster room after beating him? That is required to receive the points." The replies are a string of players going "I DID NOT" and "SOB, I also did not." You are not alone here.
The fix (recovery): as long as you haven't already done something that resets the instance — logged into a fresh Trial, taken a new area, etc. — you can portal back to the Temple of Chaos, walk through the (now fully cleared, everything dead) trial, reach the Trialmaster's room, and interact with the Ascendancy device to claim your 7 & 8. If the instance has already expired, you'll need to run the Trial again from scratch. So the moment you kill him: do not leave until you've clicked the device and watched the "Ascended" points land on your tree.

Cause 3: You died or the run failed before it counted
The Trial of Chaos is the affliction path. Each of the 10 rooms forces you to accept one of three negative modifiers that stack and last the entire run, so by rooms 8–10 you're fighting under a pile of debuffs. If you die (or, in the endgame version, run out of your death allowance) before the reward is secured, the run fails and no points are granted — you have to start a new Trial.
Good news: patch 0.5.5's Trial of Chaos rework made this far less brutal. You can now pause and resume a Trial between rooms instead of one-sitting the whole thing, room objectives were streamlined to mostly straightforward monster-slaying, and new Wager Modifiers were added. Endgame Trials now go up to 30 rooms, and all three Trialmaster Fragments can be obtained in a single run.
The fix: don't over-invest an Ultimatum you can't finish. For the campaign Ascendancy points, run a low-tier Chimeral Inscribed Ultimatum you can comfortably clear; if you fail, the Trialmaster now hands the Chimeral Ultimatum back (a 0.5.5b fix) so you can retry. Cap your elemental resistances, bring life/ES sustain, and pick the least dangerous of the three offered modifiers each room rather than the one with the shiniest reward.
The fastest clean way to actually get your points
If you just want the 8 points banked and off your to-do list, here's the efficient path in 0.5.5:
- Get to points 5 & 6 first. Run a 10-room Ultimatum at a tier you can clear. Grab every drop from the round-10 boss.
- Confirm you have all three Fates (Cowardly, Deadly, Victorious) before you touch the door. No Fate = no Trialmaster = no 7 & 8.
- Open the door, kill the Trialmaster, then immediately interact with the Ascendancy device. Watch the points land before you portal out.
- Don't gamble the run. Take the safest modifier each room; the reward difference isn't worth failing a 10-room run at room 9.
Prefer to skip the Ultimatum grind entirely? A PoE2 Ascendancy / Trial carry or a full leveling boost banks the points for you, and if you're funding your build the Trial rewards flow straight into the PoE2 currency market — 1 Divine trades for roughly 539 Exalted Orbs on the live Forbidden Rites economy (community estimate, checked September 28, 2026).

FAQ
Why did I get no Ascendancy points after clearing the Trial of Chaos? Because clearing rooms alone caps you at points 5 & 6. Points 7 & 8 require collecting all three Fate fragments, opening the Trialmaster's door, defeating him, and then interacting with the Ascendancy device in his room. If any of those steps is missing, the last two points don't land.
I killed the Trialmaster but still got nothing — is it a bug? No. The points are not awarded on the kill; you must interact with the Ascendancy claim device (the statue/device) in the Trialmaster's room afterward. If you haven't started a new instance, portal back into the cleared Temple of Chaos, reach his room, and interact with the device to claim points 7 & 8.
How many Ascendancy points does the Trial of Chaos give? Up to 8 total: 4 rooms = points 1 & 2, 7 rooms = 3 & 4, 10 rooms = 5 & 6, and 10 rooms plus defeating the Trialmaster = 7 & 8. Either the Trial of Chaos or the Trial of the Sekhemas can grant all 8 on its own — you don't have to do both.
Where do the three Fates drop? From the boss on the 10th room: Cowardly Fate (Uxmal, The Beastlord), Deadly Fate (Bahlak, The Sky Seer), and Victorious Fate (Chetza, The Feathered Plague). They can appear as plain white item drops, so pick up everything before you leave the room. You need all three to open the Trialmaster's door.
Can I recover points if I already left? Only if the trial instance hasn't reset. If it's still active, portal back and interact with the Ascendancy device. If the instance has expired or you started something new, you'll have to run the Trial again — this time claiming the points at the device before you leave.
Did the 0.5.5 rework change how points work? No — the point ladder (5 & 6 from rooms, 7 & 8 from the Trialmaster) is unchanged. What 0.5.5 changed is quality of life: you can pause and resume between rooms, room objectives are mostly monster-slaying, new Wager Modifiers were added, endgame Trials go up to 30 rooms, and all three Fragments can drop in one run.
