An Escape from Tarkov PMC in night-vision goggles wielding an MP5 fights through a dark, smoke-filled battlefield strewn with bodies — the Blackout event's pitch-black combat

The Wedge is the single most valuable — and most lethal — kill in Escape from Tarkov right now. During the Blackout event (live since July 14, 2026 on build 1.0.6.5), this Black Division commander stalks a pitch-black version of The Lab, and he is the one enemy guaranteed to be carrying the key that unlocks the entire event. Kill him, loot his pockets, and you hold the shortcut to the emergency access code, the arsenal storage room, and the working extracts. Miss him — or get farmed by his guards first — and you're extracting with nothing.

This guide covers exactly who The Wedge is, his health and gear, where he roams in Blackout Labs, the loadout that beats him, and the step-by-step fight that gets you out alive with the key.

Quick answer: how to beat The Wedge

TL;DR — The Wedge is a ~880 HP Black Division commander who spawns on Icebreaker at 100% and, during the Blackout event, roams The Lab near the Hangar Gate and Parking Garage extracts with 3–6 guards. Bring NVGs (power cuts ~10–15s in and Labs goes near-black), high-penetration ammo, grenades, and ideally a smoke or two. Don't rush the middle of the map — his guards stack up and block each other, so funnel them into a hallway, hit the front man to stall the group, then push. He is a guaranteed drop of the TerraGroup Labs arsenal storage room key (Blackout) — the key to the system admin's office where the emergency access code lives. That key is the backbone of the whole event.

Who is The Wedge in Escape from Tarkov?

The Wedge is a boss of the Black Division faction, holding the in-game rank of Commander. He was added with the Icebreaker map in patch 1.0.5, where he spawns at a 100% chance — so if you're on Icebreaker, he's there. He commands a squad of 3–6 elite guards whose health and gear are well above ordinary Scavs or Raiders.

For the Blackout event, Battlestate Games moved The Wedge and his Black Division onto The Lab. Regular Black Division fighters now patrol the whole map alongside Raiders, but The Wedge himself remains the apex threat — and the guaranteed key-holder.

A word on difficulty: the community consensus is that Black Division are far deadlier than their spawn tier suggests, and Wedge is a step above even that. As one r/EscapefromTarkov player put it after an early Blackout run, Wedge and his sub-bosses are "insane" and took 10–15 attempts to down naturally before they resorted to smoke to cheese the fight. Treat him like a raid boss, not a glorified Rogue.

Two things make Wedge a payday. First, his gear is genuinely high-tier — that Spiritus Systems LV-119 plate carrier is also the collateral for the Icebreaker quest A Wedge Between Us, and he frequently carries strong weapons like the MP7A1. Second, his oversized pockets mean he's holding far more than a normal kill.

But in Blackout, the real prize is the key. Per the event mechanics, The Wedge's copy of the TerraGroup Labs arsenal storage room key (Blackout) is a guaranteed drop. His guards and rank-and-file Black Division can carry it too, but their pocket drop is random — so if you're farming the key specifically, Wedge is your kill priority.

Where does The Wedge spawn in Blackout Labs?

The Blackout event takes place entirely on The Lab, and Wedge does not sit in one fixed room — he roams. Early-event tracking (and heavy player reporting) puts him and his guards most often near the Hangar Gate and Parking Garage areas — which, not coincidentally, are the only two extracts in Blackout Labs.

That overlap is deliberate and dangerous: the two extracts don't open until someone restores main power, and Wedge tends to be camped right where you want to leave. Expect to fight him near your exit, not in a convenient side room.

Getting to him matters too. The central and upper floors of Labs turn into a meat grinder as Black Division and Raiders brawl across open platforms. The safer approach — echoed repeatedly by players — is to route through the basement. One survivor described the lower level as their "rat tunnels," largely free of Black Division during early runs. Cross underground, come up near Wedge's area, and pick your engagement.

What to bring to kill The Wedge

Blackout Labs is a specialist raid. Roughly 10–15 seconds after you load in, the power cuts and the map goes extremely dark. Your kit should reflect that:

  • Night-vision goggles (mandatory). Flashlights work but paint a target on you. Black Division carry NVGs too, so you can loot a replacement off a body — but that's a gamble, not a plan.
  • High-penetration ammo. Wedge's guards wear real armor. Bring rounds that punch through class 4–6, not budget flea ammo.
  • Grenades. HE/frag grenades are the great equalizer when the squad clumps up. TarkovHead's boss notes flag an aggressive, grenade-led assault as the go-to answer for Wedge.
  • 1–2 smokes. The proven "cheese" is to smoke Wedge's group, break their line of sight, and push through it. Multiple players confirmed this is how they finally beat him consistently.
  • Solid armor + a full med kit. You will trade shots. The raid timer sits around 25 minutes (raised from an initial 20), so you have time to heal and reposition — but not to dawdle.

One caveat worth knowing: you can bring thermals to spot bodies in the dark, and thermals are now insurable in general — but insurance does not function on Labs, so anything you bring in and lose is gone for good. Weigh the risk.

How to fight The Wedge: step-by-step

1. Get keycard access sorted BEFORE you queue. Blackout still requires a TerraGroup Labs access keycard to enter. Trader requirements were relaxed for the event, but as one player warned, showing up without keycard access "turbo-fucks" your first attempts. Sort it first.

2. Cross via the basement. Load in, expect immediate contact (Black Division can spawn close to PMC starts), and drop to the lower level to move toward Wedge's typical Hangar/Parking area without crossing the deadly center.

3. Don't rush the stack. Wedge travels with 3–6 guards, and their biggest weakness is their AI: when they bunch up, they block each other and struggle to separate and engage. The winning line, straight from the community: hold a right-handed peek in a surrounding hallway, dump into the front guard to stagger the whole group, and let the choke do half your work. Attacking them at an open angle — where all of them can shoot you at once — gets you wrecked.

4. Use grenades and smoke on the clump. A frag into a stacked squad, or a smoke to blind them while you reposition, swings the fight hard.

5. Prioritise Wedge, then loot fast. Once the commander is down, get to his body first — that guaranteed key is the objective. Grab it, then decide whether to loot the rest of his high-tier gear or bail.

6. Restore power, then extract. Both Hangar Gate and Parking Garage stay sealed until main power comes back on. Restore it, and both gates open automatically — no button at the extract itself. Get out before more Black Division rotate into your exit.

Is farming The Wedge worth it?

Yes — on two fronts. Commercially, his gear (LV-119 MultiCam Black carrier, MP7A1, double pockets of loot) is a strong solo payout. But the bigger reason is progression: his key unlocks the emergency access code, which is the literal spine of the Blackout questline. The Key to Every Door quest sends you to the system admin's office — locked behind the arsenal storage room key Wedge drops — to find the code that opens every keypad room in Labs. Complete the full five-quest chain and you earn the Going Dark legendary achievement.

Per Battlestate's own Icebreaker changelog, BSG "Decreased reaction speed for the boss Wedge and his guards" — so he's marginally more forgiving than at launch, but on a pitch-black Labs map crawling with Black Division, "more forgiving" still means lethal.

Skip the grind: Tarkov Blackout carry & services

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does The Wedge spawn in Tarkov? The Wedge spawns at a 100% chance on the Icebreaker map, where he was added in patch 1.0.5. During the Blackout event (build 1.0.6.5, live July 14, 2026) he and his Black Division guards also spawn on The Lab, where they tend to roam near the Hangar Gate and Parking Garage extracts.

How much health does The Wedge have? Community testing puts The Wedge at roughly 880 total HP across his body parts — about double a standard PMC (~435 HP) — on top of a high-tier plate carrier. Battlestate hasn't published official per-limb values, and event/seasonal tuning can shift numbers, so treat this as community-verified rather than an official stat.

What does The Wedge drop in the Blackout event? His guaranteed drop is the TerraGroup Labs arsenal storage room key (Blackout), which unlocks the system admin's office holding the emergency access code — the key item behind the Key to Every Door quest. He also carries high-value gear including the Spiritus Systems LV-119 Plate Carrier (MultiCam Black) and often an MP7A1.

Can I get the Blackout Labs key without killing The Wedge? Sometimes. His guards and regular Black Division fighters can carry the arsenal storage room key too, but their drop is random. Wedge's copy is the only guaranteed one, which is why he's the kill priority if you're specifically farming the key.

What's the best way to beat The Wedge and his guards? Bring NVGs, high-pen ammo, grenades and smoke. Avoid the open center of Labs — route through the basement, hold a right-handed peek in a hallway, and dump fire into the front guard so the stacked squad blocks itself. Grenades and a smoke to break line of sight are the community's reliable answer.

Is insurance worth it on Blackout Labs? No — insurance does not return items lost on Labs, event or not. Anything you bring in and don't extract with is gone, so kit accordingly.
