WoW Forever Horde or Alliance? Pick Before Oct 27 (PvP Locks You In)

Ashenvale in World of Warcraft Forever, the forest Horde and Alliance have fought over since 2004

Two of the busiest threads on r/classicwow this week ask the same thing in different words: one player who started in September with no guild and no friends to follow says they have "zero preference" between the factions, and another simply asks the sub to convince them either way for the PvP ruleset. The replies are mostly jokes and Stormwind postcards, plus the honest answer that there's no wrong pick.

There is one wrong timing, though. Name reservation opens October 27, and on the PvP ruleset the first character you create decides your faction for every character after it. This guide covers what actually differs between Horde and Alliance in WoW Forever, using Blizzard's own ruleset, Skyborne and beta notes rather than 2005 forum memories.

Quick answer: In WoW Forever, choose your faction based on (1) who you'll play with, since Horde and Alliance still can't group, (2) your class, because Paladin and Shaman are no longer faction-locked but stay lopsided (Paladin: 2 Alliance races vs 1 Horde; Shaman: 4 Horde races vs 1 Alliance), and (3) your ruleset. On PvP you can only create characters of one faction, and Blizzard may temporarily limit character creation for one faction to keep the balance. For dueling and world PvP, Horde has the edge right now: 17 of 36 finalists in the $100K Forever Open were Undead. For PvE the gap is small. Make the call before name reservation opens on October 27.

Does your faction choice in WoW Forever really matter?

More than in Retail, less than in 2004. Three things are fixed:

  • No cross-faction grouping. Blizzard's ruleset article says it plainly: "Horde and Alliance players still cannot group together, preserving the faction boundaries that remain core to the World of Warcraft: Forever experience and maintaining the 'war' in Warcraft" (Blizzard News). Your faction is your dungeon pool, your raid pool, your guild pool and your Auction House.
  • No free ruleset hopping. You can't move a character between rulesets. To play under a different one, you create a new character there. The only exception is a dead Hardcore character, which can leave Hardcore (same article).
  • No faction change announced. Blizzard hasn't announced a faction-change service for Forever, so plan as if your main's faction is permanent.

What's not fixed: the class walls. Forever adds six race/class combos that original Vanilla never allowed: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Forsaken Paladin (Blizzard News). That ends the oldest reason to pick a side, "I want a Paladin, so I'm Alliance." It doesn't make the factions identical, though.

Can you play both Horde and Alliance in WoW Forever?

Yes, everywhere except the PvP ruleset. Blizzard's wording:

"On the PvP ruleset, players can only create characters for one faction. Once you create an Alliance character on the PvP ruleset, you won't be able to create a Horde character there, and vice versa. On Normal, Roleplaying, and Hardcore rulesets, you can create characters from both factions." (Blizzard News)

RulesetBoth factions on one account?World PvP
NormalYesOpt-in
PvPNo, one faction onlyAlways on in contested areas
RoleplayingYesNot a PvP ruleset
Hardcore (after launch)YesSeparate, enclosed ecosystem

So the real decision is ruleset first, faction second. If you're on Normal or RP, rolling the "wrong" faction costs you a re-level, not your account's entire PvP-ruleset future. Our WoW Forever rulesets guide covers that choice in depth.

Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield said on Blizzard's official podcast that switching later won't be offered: "If you roll on the PvP server and six months in you're like, 'Yeah, you know what? This just isn't really for me,' that's not a thing we can really facilitate… search your soul, make sure you're playing in the place that is the right place for you" (quoted by PCGamesN from episode 4 of the WoW: Forever Podcast).

Which faction has more players in WoW Forever?

Nobody outside Blizzard knows. Blizzard hasn't published a population split for the beta or for launch. Any "70/30 Horde" figure you see is a guess or a poll.

What Blizzard has confirmed is how it will respond to imbalance on PvP: Forever "will include systems intended to help keep Horde and Alliance populations closer together similar to the approach introduced in Season of Discovery, where new character creation could be temporarily limited for a faction when additional balance support was needed" (Blizzard News).

What this means in practice:

  • On PvP, the more popular faction may get harder to roll later. If you want the side everyone is flocking to, creating your character early is the lower-risk move. Blizzard hasn't said exactly how a limit would hit characters that already exist. In SoD it applied to new character creation.
  • On Normal and RP, balance controls aren't announced. Population mainly affects how fast your LFG listings fill and how deep your Auction House is.
  • The beta isn't a census. Beta access came with the Epic Pack and the Collection, not the free base game (Blizzard News), and beta characters are wiped. Treat any faction ratio from beta as noise.

Which classes are only on Horde or Alliance in WoW Forever?

None are strictly faction-exclusive anymore, but access is lopsided. Here's the faction-by-class count, built from the original Vanilla race/class matrix plus Blizzard's six new combos and the two Skyborne class lists (Skyborne reveal):

ClassAlliance racesHorde races
PaladinHuman, Dwarf (2)Forsaken (1)
ShamanDwarf (1)Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne (4)
DruidNight Elf, High Order Skyborne (2)Tauren, Windshaper Skyborne (2)
MageHuman, Gnome, High Order Skyborne (3)Forsaken, Troll, Orc (3)
WarlockHuman, Gnome (2)Orc, Forsaken, Troll (3)
PriestHuman, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome (4)Forsaken, Troll (2)
HunterHuman, Dwarf, Night Elf, High Order Skyborne (4)Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne (4)
RogueHuman, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, High Order Skyborne (5)Orc, Forsaken, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne (4)
WarriorAll fiveAll five

The headline numbers:

  • Paladin players get more race choice on Alliance. Horde's only Paladin is the Forsaken.
  • Shaman players get far more race choice on Horde. Alliance's only Shaman is the Dwarf.
  • The Skyborne split by faction. Blizzard: "Horde-aligned Skyborne embrace elemental traditions and gain access to the Shaman class, while Alliance-aligned Skyborne pursue the arcane legacy of their ancestors and gain access to the Mage class" (Blizzard News). You pick the faction at character creation, and both versions start on Zephras Isle (levels 1–12). Want a Skyborne Mage? That's Alliance. Skyborne Shaman? Horde. More in our Skyborne race guide.

Is Horde or Alliance better for PvP in WoW Forever?

Horde, if you weigh duels and world PvP by the only hard data available. Alliance is perfectly viable if you prefer it.

The tournament data. The community-run Forever Open ($100K prize pool, finals October 18) is the biggest competitive sample of Forever PvP so far. 17 of the 36 finalists were Undead, and all four Warlock finalists, including champion Warlockguy, were Undead (full results). Undead is a Horde race. That's a 1v1 duel format at the beta's level-30 cap, so it says more about duels than about 15v15 battlegrounds or raid-night PvP. It's still the strongest signal anyone has.

The racials, after the October 15 rework (Blizzard beta development notes):

FactionPvP-relevant racials
HordeForsaken Will of the Forsaken (no longer usable under Scatter Shot), Orc Hardiness and Blood Fury (now a 3-min cooldown), Tauren War Stomp (cooldown cut to 90 s), Troll Berserking
AllianceHuman Perception and Will to Survive, Dwarf Stoneform, Gnome Escape Artist, Night Elf Shadowmeld

Blizzard deliberately trimmed the Horde's PvP toys: Will of the Forsaken now loses to Scatter Shot, Blood Fury's cooldown went up, and Orc Shatter Curse's magic damage reduction dropped from 15% to 5%. Even so, a Forsaken caster with Will of the Forsaken is still what the duel ladder rewarded. We rank every race per class in WoW Forever racial changes: best race for every class, and classes in the WoW Forever PvP tier list.

Battleground balance matters less than it used to. Greenfield said battlegrounds should keep pre-mades away from solo players: "If you queue solo, you shouldn't get put up against a pre-made, pretty much straight up" (PCGamesN). Battlegrounds can also mix players from different rulesets, except Hardcore (Blizzard News), so queue times on a smaller faction aren't capped by one ruleset's population.

The Barrens in WoW Forever, a classic open-world PvP zone between Horde and Alliance

What does world PvP look like between factions in WoW Forever?

Blizzard wants it messy. Lead Designer Tim Jones said the team wants to see "organic battles happening in the outdoor world", with new rare recipes and materials that only drop in one place driving fights over contested spots. He also talked about "even encouraging people to attack each other's capital cities" (PCGamesN). Greenfield added that the team won't step in quickly on camping: "A light touch is a better touch when it comes to actually encouraging real PvP."

For your faction choice, that means on the PvP ruleset:

  • Your faction is your gank squad and your rescue party. No cross-faction grouping means no calling the other side for help.
  • Being outnumbered hurts most in the open world. Battlegrounds can mix rulesets and keep solo players away from pre-mades; contested zones don't. That's where a lopsided ruleset feels it, and why Blizzard reserved the right to limit character creation.
  • Rank rewards are faction-flavoured, not faction-gated. Both sides climb the same 14 ranks (Grand Marshal for Alliance, High Warlord for Horde), and the new Darkspear Islands battleground has a rep for each side: Darkspear Raiders (Horde) and Theramore Expeditionary Force (Alliance). Details in our Darkspear Islands and honor guide.

Is Horde or Alliance better for PvE and raiding in WoW Forever?

Close to even. The October 15 notes replaced the old weapon-skill racials with flat crit bonuses: Human Ruthless (+2% crit chance), Dwarf Earth Fury (+2% crit damage and healing) and Orc Savage (+1% crit chance, plus Blood Fury). Tauren Endurance went from +1% hit to +2% crit damage and healing, and Troll Regeneration was buffed (Blizzard beta notes). These are percent-level differences. They won't decide whether your guild clears the December 9 raids: Barrow Deeps (10), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia's Lair (40). Raid content is the same on both sides.

What matters more for PvE:

  • Group comp access. Paladin and Shaman auras, blessings and totems are no longer one per faction. Alliance groups can run a Dwarf Shaman and Horde groups a Forsaken Paladin, but supply will follow the race counts in the class table above.
  • Guild and friend availability. No cross-faction grouping and no automated Dungeon Finder means your faction's community is your dungeon queue.
  • Personal preference for 300+ hours. The game runs at level 60 for the foreseeable future, so you'll see your faction's capital a lot.

How should you choose? A 30-second decision tree

  • Friends or a guild already picked? Go with them. Nothing else on this list outweighs not being able to group with them.
  • Locked into a class? Paladin with race choice → Alliance. Shaman with race choice → Horde. Skyborne Mage → Alliance. Skyborne Shaman → Horde.
  • PvP ruleset, and you care about duels or world PvP? Lean Horde (Forsaken caster). Accept that the bigger faction may face creation limits, so roll early.
  • Normal or RP and solo? Pick the races and zones you like. You can always roll the other side on the same ruleset.
  • Still stuck? Pick the capital city you'd rather log out in for a year. The Reddit thread wasn't wrong.

When do you need to decide?

Before October 27 if you own a paid edition, since Early Name Reservation comes with the Heroic Pack and up. Blizzard's timeline: the beta closes October 21, name reservation and early character creation run October 27 to November 3 with up to three characters, and launch is November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST (Blizzard News). Reserving a name means creating a character, and Blizzard's one-faction PvP rule has no reservation exception. So the first PvP-ruleset character you reserve sets your PvP faction. Step-by-step: WoW Forever name reservation guide.

Quick reminder, because it trips people up: the $29.99 Skyborne Heroic Pack unlocks the Skyborne race and early name reservation but does not include beta access. Only the Epic Pack and the Collection did.

FAQ

Can you play Horde and Alliance on the same account in WoW Forever? Yes on the Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore rulesets. On the PvP ruleset, Blizzard allows only one faction: once you create an Alliance character there, you can't create a Horde one, and vice versa.

Can Horde and Alliance group together in WoW Forever? No. Blizzard confirmed factions stay separate, so you can't party, run dungeons or raid with the other faction. Battlegrounds can include players from other rulesets (except Hardcore), but they're still Horde vs Alliance.

Is Horde or Alliance more popular in WoW Forever? Blizzard hasn't released population numbers. On the PvP ruleset, it says it may temporarily limit new character creation for a faction to keep balance, the same approach it used in Season of Discovery.

Can Horde be Paladins in WoW Forever? Yes. Forsaken Paladin is one of Forever's six new race/class combos, which gives Horde its first Paladin on a Vanilla ruleset. Alliance has two Paladin races (Human and Dwarf).

Is the Skyborne race Horde or Alliance? Both. You choose at character creation. Windshaper Skyborne (Horde) can be Shaman, and High Order Skyborne (Alliance) can be Mage. Both can be Druid, Hunter, Rogue and Warrior.

Can I change faction later in WoW Forever? Blizzard hasn't announced a faction-change service for Forever, and characters can't move between rulesets except Hardcore characters after they die. Treat your choice as permanent.
