Blizzard's October 15 beta build quietly changed the most permanent decision you will make in World of Warcraft: Forever — your race. Three classic weapon racials are gone, all nine races were touched, and the Skyborne's haste passive tripled. With Early Name Reservation opening October 27 and launch on November 4, 2026, the race you reserve next week is very likely the race you raid with when raids open on December 9. Here is what changed, what it means, and the best race for every class right now.
Every racial change below comes from Blizzard's own WoW Forever Beta Development Notes for October 15. Baseline race kits come from Blizzard's Create the Hero You Want to Be article. These are beta-build notes, so Blizzard can still tune numbers before launch — treat them as the current kit heading into November 4, not a final one.
TL;DR — the best race for every class in WoW Forever
- Weapon racials are gone. Human Sword Specialization became Ruthless (+2% critical strike chance), Orc Axe Specialization became Savage (+1% critical strike chance), and Dwarf Mace Specialization became Earth Fury (+2% critical damage and healing). No more choosing a race because of the sword or axe you hope to loot.
- Skyborne Wind Blessed went from 1% to 3% haste — the single biggest number change in the patch.
- Troll Regeneration doubled (10% → 20%), Tauren War Stomp dropped to a 90-second cooldown, Orc Blood Fury rose to a 3-minute cooldown, and Undead Touch of the Grave now procs far more often but on a 25-second internal cooldown.
- Best picks: Human or Orc for Warriors; Dwarf for healers; Gnome or Human for Alliance casters; Undead or Troll for Horde casters; Night Elf or Tauren for Druids; Skyborne for anyone who wants the raw 3% haste and owns the pack.
- Rule of thumb: pick the class first, the faction second (it decides who you can play with), and the race last. A racial is a small edge, not a new class.
What changed in the October 15 racial overhaul?
Blizzard opened the racial section of the notes with one line — "Racial abilities have been updated" — and then rewrote something for all nine races (both Skyborne kits included). Here are the headline changes from the official notes, in one table (minor bug and visual fixes omitted):
| Race | October 15 change (official) | Who it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Sword Specialization → Ruthless: 2% increased critical strike chance | Every Human class, especially casters who never used swords |
| Orc | Axe Specialization → Savage: 1% crit; Blood Fury cooldown 2 → 3 min; Shatter Curse now dispels Curses and Banes, magic damage reduction 15% → 5% | Melee and Hunters, with less burst |
| Dwarf | Mace Specialization → Earth Fury: 2% increased critical damage and healing; Find Treasure can also find extra items in most chests | Healers and crit-heavy builds |
| Skyborne | Wind Blessed haste 1% → 3%; Skysight and Read Leyline castable while moving; Read Leyline minimum 20 → 30 sec; Walk on Air cooldown 2 min → 90 sec | Every Skyborne class |
| Tauren | Endurance now grants 2% critical damage and healing (was 1% hit); Plainsrunning adds 3% mounted speed; Cultivation 60 → 15 min; War Stomp 2 min → 90 sec | Tanks, Druids, PvP control |
| Undead | Touch of the Grave now 30% proc chance for casters, 20% for Paladins/Rogues/Warriors, 25-second internal cooldown; Will of the Forsaken unusable under Scatter Shot | Casters most, Paladins second |
| Gnome | Eureka! is now an 8-second buff with no charges, and also boosts Power Word: Shield | Priests, Warlocks, Rogues |
| Night Elf | Quickness speed bonus now stacks with other speed increases | Leveling and PvP mobility |
| Troll | Regeneration health regen bonus 10% → 20% | Leveling sustain, solo play |

Two developer notes in the patch explain the intent. On Tauren Plainsrunning, Blizzard wrote: "Stutter-stepping is no longer sufficient to maintain the effect." And on the Undead change, which removed a lower-rank-spell penalty from the drain: "This shouldn't have been in place because it's a racial, not a Class spell or ability." In other words, Blizzard wants racials to be flat, reliable bonuses — not mini-games and not tied to a specific weapon drop.
Why does removing weapon specialization matter so much?
In 2004-era WoW, Human and Orc warriors were the "correct" raid picks largely because of +5 weapon skill with swords or axes — a hidden bonus that reduced your miss chance and the damage lost to glancing blows, and it only worked if you were holding the right weapon. That made race choice a gamble on loot tables.
Ruthless, Savage and Earth Fury work with any weapon and, for Ruthless and Earth Fury, with spells and heals too. Three practical consequences:
- Human became a caster race. A Human Mage, Warlock or Priest now gets a flat 2% crit that Classic Humans never gave casters.
- Dwarf became a healer race. Earth Fury's +2% critical healing stacks with every crit heal a Priest, Paladin or the new Dwarf Shaman lands.
- Orc got slightly worse at burst. Savage is only 1% crit, and Blood Fury now comes up every 3 minutes instead of 2 — so fewer uses on long boss fights.
This sits on top of the bigger rule Blizzard explained for Forever at BlizzCon: every race gets two active and two passive racials, tuned to bring a similar amount of offensive power plus its own utility. The October 15 build moves the kits closer to that target. For how these racials interact with the raid-wide buff change in the same build, see our breakdown of the final beta patch and class value.
Which races can play which classes in WoW Forever?
Before you pick "best race", check the combo exists. Forever adds six new race/class combos to the Classic lineup — Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Forsaken (Undead) Paladin — plus the Skyborne race on both factions (per Blizzard's BlizzCon Forever overview).
| Race | Classes available in Forever |
|---|---|
| Human | Warrior, Paladin, Hunter (new), Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock |
| Dwarf | Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman (new) |
| Night Elf | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Druid |
| Gnome | Warrior, Rogue, Priest (new), Mage, Warlock |
| Skyborne (High Order, Alliance) | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Mage, Druid |
| Orc | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Mage (new), Warlock |
| Undead | Warrior, Paladin (new), Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock |
| Tauren | Warrior, Hunter, Shaman, Druid |
| Troll | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock (new) |
| Skyborne (Windshaper, Horde) | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, Druid |
The six new Classic-race combos are in the base game with your subscription. Skyborne requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack ($29.99) or higher — and remember the Heroic Pack does not include beta access. Full details on all seven new options are in our race and class combos guide, and whether the race is worth paying for is covered in is the Skyborne race worth $30.
What is the best race for each class in WoW Forever?
These are timesaver.gg editorial picks based on the October 15 beta kits — not simulation results, which nobody can run reliably before launch. They weigh PvE first (raids open December 9), assume a standard damage or healing spec for each class, and add a PvP note where a racial changes the answer. Skyborne is listed separately because it is paid.
Warrior
- Alliance: Human. Ruthless gives +2% crit to every attack, and Will to Survive breaks stuns. Gnome is a close second for Eureka!'s 10% damage window and +5% maximum Rage from Expansive Mind.
- Horde: Orc. Blood Fury's +10% Attack Power and Spell Power for 15 seconds plus Hardiness (stuns 20% shorter) still makes it the strongest all-rounder, even after the cooldown nerf. Troll (Berserking) is the pick if you hate stuns less than you love attack speed.
- Tank note: Tauren is now a real tank race — +5% health, +2% critical damage, and a 90-second War Stomp.
Paladin
- Alliance: Dwarf for Holy, Human for Retribution. Earth Fury's +2% critical healing makes Dwarf the healer pick; Stoneform also clears poison, disease and bleed. Human's Ruthless plus +5% Spirit suits Ret and leveling.
- Horde: Undead (the only option). Will of the Forsaken breaks Fear, Charm and Sleep, Cannibalize restores health and mana from a corpse, and Touch of the Grave procs 20% of the time for Paladins.
Hunter
- Alliance: Dwarf. Big Game Hunter (+5% damage to Beasts) and Earth Fury's crit damage suit a class that crits often. Human Hunter (new) is the alternative for Ruthless' flat crit chance.
- Horde: Orc or Troll. Orc for Blood Fury burst (fight length decides how many uses you get); Troll for Berserking plus Beast Slaying (+5% vs Beasts).
Rogue
- Alliance: Human for Ruthless and Perception (stealth detection for 20 seconds — a PvP gem). Gnome for Eureka! and Escape Artist if you PvP.
- Horde: Undead for PvP (Will of the Forsaken is still the only racial Fear break, even without its old immunity window). Orc for PvE damage.
Priest
- Alliance: Dwarf for healing (Earth Fury + Stoneform). Gnome (new) is the most interesting pick: Eureka! now also boosts Power Word: Shield, and Expansive Mind adds +5% maximum Mana.
- Horde: Undead. Touch of the Grave procs 30% of the time for casters, Cannibalize restores mana, and Will of the Forsaken covers PvP. Troll (Berserking) is the raid-throughput alternative.
Shaman
- Alliance: Dwarf (the only Alliance Shaman — Skyborne High Order cannot play Shaman). The new Dwarf Shaman is one of the clearest winners of the patch for crit-heavy healers and casters — Earth Fury boosts crit heals and crit Lightning Bolts alike.
- Horde: Orc for Enhancement, Troll or Tauren for Restoration/Elemental. In Forever, Blood Fury buffs Spell Power as well as Attack Power, so it helps every spec. Tauren's War Stomp is the PvP and dungeon-safety pick.
Mage
- Alliance: Human or Gnome. Human for the flat +2% spell crit; Gnome for Eureka! (10% more damage and 10% lower cost for 8 seconds) and +5% Mana.
- Horde: Undead or Troll. Undead for Touch of the Grave and PvP; Troll for Berserking burst. Orc Mage (new) works — Blood Fury includes Spell Power in Forever — but is not a must-pick.
Warlock
- Alliance: Human or Gnome, same reasoning as Mage.
- Horde: Undead or Orc. Troll Warlock (new) is viable with Berserking, and the doubled Regeneration helps between pulls while leveling.
Druid
- Alliance: Night Elf. Elune's Light (+10% crit for 15 seconds) and Shadowmeld, and Quickness's movement bonus now stacks with other speed increases.
- Horde: Tauren. +5% health and +2% critical damage/healing for a bear or a healer, plus War Stomp.
Is Skyborne now the best race in WoW Forever?
On raw numbers, possibly. Wind Blessed now gives +3% spellcasting, melee and ranged haste — always on, every class, every fight — plus +5% damage to Elementals and Walk on Air, a 10-second glide on a 90-second cooldown. Haste and crit are not directly interchangeable — the value depends on spec and fight — but an always-on 3% haste is one of the strongest single passives on paper, and Skyborne exists on both factions.
The catches:
- It costs money. Skyborne requires the $29.99 Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition (the unlock is account-wide).
- Limited classes. High Order (Alliance) can be Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Mage or Druid; Windshaper (Horde) can be Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman or Druid. No Skyborne Priest, Paladin or Warlock.
- Beta numbers move. Haste tripled in one build; Blizzard can trim it before launch. Do not buy a pack purely for a passive.
If you were already going to buy a pack, Skyborne is now a top-tier pick for any class it can play. If you were not, the free races are close behind — your play matters far more.
Should racials decide your WoW Forever main?
No — and the numbers back that up. The biggest passive change in this patch is 3% haste; the biggest Human change is 2% crit. Compare that with the gap between a geared and an under-geared character on December 9, when Barrow Deeps (10-player), Hyjal Summit (20-player) and Onyxia's Lair (40-player) open, per Blizzard's Forever roadmap. Gear, consumables and showing up at level 60 on raid week dwarf any racial.
A sane order for the next two weeks:
- Pick your class. If you are torn, start with our best class to level and best class for solo beginners guides; PvP players should check the best PvP class tier list.
- Pick your faction and ruleset with your friends. Forever has no realm list — you choose Normal, PvP or Roleplay and get matched by language (servers and rulesets explained).
- Then pick the race using the list above.
- Reserve the name between October 27 and November 3 — the name reservation guide covers who qualifies.
Want to try a race before committing? Blizzard moved the free, open Stress Test to October 21 (Blizzard's regional start times: North America 2:00 p.m. PDT, Europe 19:00 CEST, Korea 06:00 KST and Taiwan 05:00 CST on October 22), per its October 16 update — no subscription needed. Characters are wiped afterwards. Our stress test guide has the install steps.
Raiding on day one costs gold, whatever race you pick. Forever launches on fresh realms with a fresh economy, so plenty of players are keeping a classic WoW character funded in the meantime.
- Buy WoW Classic Era Gold — keep your live Classic Era character funded while you wait for November 4.
- All WoW Classic Era services — gold, leveling and more on the live Classic Era realms.
Blizzard has not announced any gold or character transfers from Classic Era to Forever, so treat Era gold as an Era-only resource. For Forever's own economy, see the WoW Forever gold farming guide and how much gold you need for your mount. Still comparing versions? FAQ
Did Blizzard remove weapon specialization racials in WoW Forever? Yes. The October 15 beta notes replaced Human Sword Specialization with Ruthless (2% increased critical strike chance), Orc Axe Specialization with Savage (1% increased critical strike chance), and Dwarf Mace Specialization with Earth Fury (2% increased critical damage and healing).
What is the best Horde race in WoW Forever? For most PvE players, Orc (Warriors, Hunters, Enhancement Shamans) or Undead (casters, Rogues in PvP, Paladins). Tauren is the best Horde tank and Druid race, and Troll is strong for leveling now that Regeneration doubled to 20% — including 20% of your health regeneration continuing in combat.
What is the best Alliance race in WoW Forever? Human is the best all-rounder after Ruthless. For healing, Dwarf is the safest pick (Earth Fury boosts every crit heal, Stoneform cleanses); Gnome is the higher-ceiling Priest pick thanks to Eureka! and +5% Mana, and is also strong for Mages and Warlocks. Night Elf remains the Druid pick.
Are the WoW Forever racials final? No. They come from the October 15 beta build, and Blizzard can still tune them before launch on November 4, 2026. The beta ends October 21 and launch build details may change.
Can I change my race after launch? Blizzard has not announced race-change services for WoW Forever. Treat your race as permanent when you create your character during name reservation (October 27 – November 3) or at launch.
Do I need to pay for Skyborne to get the 3% haste racial? Yes. Skyborne is unlocked by the Skyborne Heroic Pack ($29.99) or a higher edition. The six new Classic-race combos, like Dwarf Shaman and Undead Paladin, are included with a subscription.
