WoW Midnight Season 2 Best DPS Rankings: Mythic+ and Raid Tiers for Patch 12.1 (Launch Week)

Midnight Season 2 opens Tuesday, August 18, 2026 (NA) / Wednesday, August 19 (EU) — and patch 12.1 "Curse of Ula'tek" rewrote enough of the DPS pecking order that last season's main may not be this season's main. This is the launch-week DPS hub: the Mythic+ tiers, the raid tiers, exactly what Blizzard buffed and nerfed, and where the data comes from.

Read this next line before you reroll, because most "Season 2 tier list" pages will not tell you: there are no live Season 2 logs yet. The season has not started. Every ranking below is built from patch 12.1 PTR testing, sim-based tier lists published during PTR, and Blizzard's own official 12.1 class tuning posts — including the tuning batch Blizzard published on August 15, 2026, three days before the season opens. When real Warcraft Logs data from The Venomous Abyss and Season 2 keys lands, this page gets updated.

⚡ TL;DR — Best DPS in WoW Midnight Season 2 (Patch 12.1)

- Season 2 starts Tue Aug 18 (NA) / Wed Aug 19 (EU), 2026. Patch 12.1 has been live since Aug 11 (NA) / Aug 12 (EU), so the raid, the M+ ladder and PvP Season 2 all switch on a week after the patch.

- Top of the pile going in: Arms Warrior, Arcane Mage and Frost Death Knight. Arms and Arcane sit at the very top of Icy Veins' Mythic+ PTR tier list; Frost DK just took an across-the-board +9% ability damage buff in Blizzard's August 15 tuning pass.

- Also S/A+ contenders: Unholy Death Knight, Windwalker Monk, Outlaw Rogue, Balance Druid and Devourer Demon Hunter (raid).

- The single biggest change is not a spec, it's the combat math: player health and creature damage are both up 25% at max level, and major DPS cooldowns lost throughput so filler abilities could gain it. Burst-window specs got flatter; sustained-damage specs got better.

- Nothing is locked. Blizzard published a tuning calendar — passes on Aug 18, Aug 25, Sep 1 and Sep 22 — and said early tuning will be "conservative." Expect week-1 rankings to move.

- Rankings source: 12.1 PTR sims/tier lists + Blizzard official 12.1 patch notes and class tuning posts. No live Season 2 log data exists yet — this page is updated when it does.

Why can't anyone give you real Season 2 DPS numbers yet?

Because Season 2 has not happened. The Venomous Abyss raid, the Season 2 Mythic+ rotation and PvP Season 2 all unlock on August 18 — one week after the content patch itself, exactly as Blizzard described the two-phase rollout. Until players clear bosses and push keys, there are no parses to rank.

What does exist, and what this guide uses:

  • Blizzard's official 12.1 content update notes — the design intent and the global combat changes.
  • Blizzard's class tuning posts, including a full spec-by-spec batch posted by community manager Linxy on August 15, 2026, going live for the season start.
  • PTR-based tier lists from Icy Veins, built on months of PTR testing (their Mythic+ PTR list was last updated August 2, 2026; their raiding sim list on August 8, 2026).

Treat anything more precise than that — a specific DPS-per-second figure for a Season 2 boss, a percentile chart, a "1st place with 1.24M DPS" claim — as invented. It cannot exist on August 15.

If you're still getting geared for the opener, the Season 2 gearing guide and item level chart and the Season 2 prep checklist cover the ilvl side, and the Patch 12.1 vs Season 2 unlock breakdown explains exactly what turns on which week.

What did patch 12.1 actually change about DPS?

Two things, and the second matters more than any individual spec buff.

1. Cooldowns got quieter, filler buttons got louder. Blizzard's 12.1 content update notes state it plainly:

"In Curse of Ula'tek, we're going to be lowering throughput for major DPS cooldown's for several specializations and increasing their steady state damage. When damage done during cooldowns is significantly higher than damage outside of cooldowns, the pacing of combat outside of cooldowns can feel sluggish. Our priority is ensuring that cooldowns continue to be high-impact and fun moments, that damage dealt without cooldowns is effective, and that we maintain texture between specs."

Curse of Ula'tek Content Update Notes, Blizzard Entertainment

2. Everyone got 25% tankier and everything hits 25% harder. Also verbatim from the notes: "Player health and creature damage has been increased by 25% at max level. Health consumable values have been adjusted to match new health values."

Together those two changes punish the same archetype: the spec that does nothing for 90 seconds, then deletes a pack. Pulls last longer relative to a burst window, so sustained, low-ramp damage profiles are worth more in Season 2 than they were in Season 1 — which is precisely why specs like Arms Warrior and Arcane Mage sit at the top of PTR lists while several Season 1 burst kings slid down.

Which DPS specs are best for Mythic+ in Season 2?

Based on Icy Veins' Mythic+ PTR tier list for patch 12.1, last updated August 2, 2026, which ranks on raw damage plus group value — utility, mobility, survivability, self-sustain — not damage alone.

TierSpecsWhy they're here
S+Arms Warrior, Arcane MageArms' output is described as "extraordinary" and the best of the melee pack; Arcane is called the strongest ranged spec on the PTR, with better durability on top of the damage.
SOutlaw Rogue, Windwalker MonkOutlaw took consecutive buffs into launch. Windwalker is one of the highest-burst melee specs after four years in the wilderness.
A+Balance Druid, Elemental Shaman, Unholy Death Knight, Frost Death Knight, Devourer Demon Hunter, Assassination Rogue, Destruction Warlock, Retribution PaladinCompetitive single-target with elite AoE (Balance), big aura buffs (Assassination), strong AoE but thin single-target (Destruction). Frost DK is called one of the best melee choices going into S2 — and that was before the Aug 15 buff.
AEnhancement Shaman, Feral Druid, Shadow Priest, Havoc Demon Hunter, Fury Warrior, Demonology Warlock, Affliction Warlock, Fire MageAll playable, all one tuning pass from moving. Fury's weak mass AoE and Affliction's single-target are the named concerns.
BAugmentation Evoker, Frost Mage, Marksmanship Hunter, Survival HunterAugmentation is explicitly weaker than its Season 1 version. Frost Mage got almost no PTR changes.
CBeast Mastery Hunter, Devastation EvokerDevastation falls off hard outside cooldowns — the exact profile 12.1's cooldown flattening hurts most.
TBDSubtlety RogueThe PTR iteration was described as unfinished; it took a +6% all-damage buff on Aug 15, so expect movement.

Where the sources disagree — Unholy Death Knight. During PTR, Icy Veins published a separate update headlined "The King is Back" that moved Unholy to S and called it "likely the highest DPS class for Season 2 at the moment", before later tuning settled it back at A+ on their August 2 list. Other launch-week reads still call Unholy the safest Mythic+ meta pick. We've placed it at A+ because that's where the most recently dated list has it — but treat Unholy as a genuine S-tier candidate rather than a settled A+.

The honest caveat: the Hunter situation is the clearest example of why you shouldn't tattoo this on your arm. All three Hunter specs were flagged as underperforming with buffs expected — and Beast Mastery then received a Venomous Abyss 4-set buff on August 15 (Cobra Shot's Beast Cleave bonus 20% → 30%, additional damage 15% → 20%). C-tier on Aug 2 does not mean C-tier on Aug 18.

For the dungeon list itself, see the Season 2 Mythic+ dungeon pool breakdown, and for the rating targets, the Season 2 Keystone Master guide.

Which DPS specs are best for the Venomous Abyss raid?

Icy Veins' Midnight raiding DPS tier list (updated August 8, 2026) ranks by sim-driven raid viability and strength.

TierSpecs
SDevourer Demon Hunter, Arms Warrior, Balance Druid
A+Arcane Mage, Destruction Warlock, Windwalker Monk, Shadow Priest, Frost Death Knight
AFrost Mage, Affliction Warlock, Elemental Shaman, Enhancement Shaman, Devastation Evoker, Outlaw Rogue
BDemonology Warlock, Subtlety Rogue, Retribution Paladin, Marksmanship Hunter, Beast Mastery Hunter, Fury Warrior
CAssassination Rogue, Unholy Death Knight, Fire Mage, Augmentation Evoker, Havoc Demon Hunter, Survival Hunter, Feral Druid

Note how differently the two lists treat the same spec. Unholy Death Knight sits high in Mythic+ (A+, with an S-tier case) and bottom-tier C in raid. Arms Warrior is top-two in both. That gap is the whole reason a single blended "best DPS" list is useless — pick for the content you actually run.

How does Blizzard's August 15 tuning change these lists?

This is the newest data on the page and it lands after both tier lists above were written. Blizzard's community manager Linxy opened the tuning post with:

"With the first week of the Curse of Ula'tek content update, we're making some adjustments to low and high performers to start Season 2 next week."

Linxy, Blizzard Entertainment, August 15, 2026

The DPS-relevant changes:

SpecChangeDirection
Frost Death KnightAll ability damage +9%; Venomous Abyss 2-set attack speed 2% → 1% per stack; Icy Death Torrent bonus 4% → 2% per stack⬆️ Big baseline buff, tier set trimmed
Devourer Demon HunterAll ability damage +14%; Reap/Cull/Eradicate −12%; 4-set soul fragments 8 → 2, Reap bonus 20% → 10%↔️ Baseline up, tier set gutted
Fury WarriorAll damage +6%; 4-set Bloodthirst +10%; Recklessness crit bonus 5–10% → 3–6%⬆️ Classic "cooldown out, filler in"
Subtlety RogueAll damage +6%; 4-set 100% → 60%⬆️
Enhancement ShamanAll damage +5%⬆️
Assassination RogueAll damage +4%⬆️
Arcane MageAll ability damage +3%; 2-set Arcane Missiles 20% → 5%; 4-set Cumulative Power 5% → 3%⬇️ Net nerf once you're in tier
Demonology Warlock2-set Implode 250% → 350% main target, 225% → 315% others⬆️
Beast Mastery Hunter4-set: Cobra Shot now benefits from Beast Cleave at 30% effectiveness per stack (was 20%), additional damage 15% → 20%⬆️
Restoration DruidAll damage +20% (and +4% healing)⬆️
Discipline PriestAll damage −30%, Atonement transfer 32% → 46%⬇️

A detail worth knowing if you also do rated PvP: several of these lines — including the Devourer, Restoration Druid and Discipline Priest damage changes — are tagged "Does not affect PvP combat," so they are PvE-only adjustments.

Read the pattern, not the individual lines. Blizzard repeatedly buffed baseline damage while cutting tier-set bonuses — Frost DK, Devourer, Fury, Subtlety and Arcane all follow that shape. The practical consequence: week-1 rankings, before anyone has 4-piece, will not match week-4 rankings. Specs whose power was moved into baseline abilities look strongest at the opener; specs whose tier sets survived intact look strongest once the raid has been farmed.

Should you reroll for Season 2?

Almost always: no. Three reasons, in order of how much they should weigh on you.

Tuning is scheduled and Blizzard is being cautious about it. Blizzard's Kaivax laid out passes on August 18, August 25, September 1 and September 22, plus more before Season 3, and said "Early progression tuning will generally be conservative, especially before Ula'tek has been defeated on Mythic difficulty" and that "if we notice unhealthy trends begin to emerge, we'll quickly develop tuning changes." Translation: a spec that looks 5% ahead on August 18 may not be on August 25.

A B-tier spec you know beats an S-tier spec you don't. The 25% health increase means fights last longer, which means more chances to die to a mechanic you haven't learned. Execution gaps between "know the spec" and "learned it last night" are far bigger than the gaps between tiers on either list above.

Class feel matters more in a long season than 3% throughput. The community response to 12.1's combat overhaul has been unusually positive on exactly this axis. From r/wow on August 15, 2026:

"Frost DK is the kind of gameplay I've always been looking for in this game. […] Cool, flashy procs, a rotation with lots of buttons, 2 resources (Runes and Runic Power), and oh my god!!! The effects, guys. THE EFFECTS."

u/RecentHistorian220, r/wow

If you are rerolling, the fastest route to a season-ready alt is not the tier list — it's gearing throughput. The Season 2 gold budget breakdown covers what an alt actually costs to kit out, and Bountiful Delves are the cheapest solo catch-up lane in 12.1.

FAQ

What is the best DPS spec in WoW Midnight Season 2? There is no single answer, because the two lists disagree. For Mythic+, Arms Warrior and Arcane Mage top Icy Veins' patch 12.1 PTR tier list, with Unholy Death Knight the strongest A+ case behind them. For the Venomous Abyss raid, Devourer Demon Hunter, Arms Warrior and Balance Druid lead their sim-based raid list. Arms Warrior is the only spec in the top tier of both. All of this is PTR data — Season 2 has not started, so no live logs exist yet.

Are these rankings based on real Season 2 logs? No, and nobody's are. Season 2 begins August 18, 2026 (NA) / August 19 (EU). These tiers come from patch 12.1 PTR testing, sim-based tier lists published during PTR, and Blizzard's official 12.1 class tuning posts — including the August 15, 2026 batch. This page will be updated once Warcraft Logs has real Venomous Abyss and Season 2 keystone data.

Which specs got the biggest buffs in 12.1? In Blizzard's August 15 tuning pass, Devourer Demon Hunter took the largest flat increase of any DPS spec at +14% ability damage (paired with a −12% cut to Reap, Cull and Eradicate and a heavy tier-set nerf), followed by Frost Death Knight at +9%, then Fury Warrior and Subtlety Rogue at +6%, Enhancement Shaman at +5%, and Assassination Rogue at +4%.

Why do burst specs feel worse in Season 2? Blizzard deliberately moved throughput out of major DPS cooldowns and into baseline rotational abilities, and raised player health and creature damage by 25% at max level. Longer fights plus flatter cooldowns means a spec that relies on one enormous window converts less of its damage than a spec with steady pressure.

Should I reroll to a top-tier spec before Season 2? Generally no. Blizzard has tuning passes scheduled for August 18, August 25, September 1 and September 22, and has said early tuning will be conservative — placements will move. A spec you play well will out-perform a higher-tier spec you're learning, especially with 25% more health making mechanics-driven deaths costlier.

When will these Season 2 DPS rankings be final? They won't be "final" at any point, but they stabilise once Mythic Ula'tek has been killed and the first two tuning passes have landed — realistically early-to-mid September 2026. Blizzard themselves tied the loosening of conservative tuning to Ula'tek being defeated on Mythic difficulty.
