PoE 2 TacticianB
Mercenary ascendancy · verified 2026-07-04 · STRDEX
community tier · patch 0.5.4b (editorial)
The buff-stacking support-commander who halves persistent-buff reservation, commands totems and banners, and locks enemies down with pins.
You freed up spirit lets you run more auras, heralds, and persistent buffs at once, then reinforce your line with deployable totems and banners while pinning enemies so they cannot act. It plays as a scaling, setup-heavy commander archetype that gets stronger the longer a fight lasts and the more buffs you layer. Significantly reworked in 0.5.0 and still being tuned, it is currently the recommended league-start and leveling pick for Mercenary.
Strengths
- Roughly doubles usable spirit by cutting persistent-buff reservation in half (A Solid Plan), enabling heavy aura/herald stacking
- Strong, easy-to-scale defenses from potent Armour scaling — very forgiving with self-found gear
- Powerful crowd control: projectile hits build Pin, and pinned enemies cannot act (Right Where We Want Them)
- Big Area of Effect and totem/banner support that boosts both you and your allies
Weaknesses
- More setup than Witchhunter — you need to place banners/totems and layer buffs before you come online in a fight
- As a reworked-in-0.5.0 ascendancy it is still under balance evaluation, so its tuning may shift patch to patch
- Buff-stacking scaling ramps over a fight, so it feels weaker in fast, bursty engagements before buffs are up
Current standing (B-tier): Strong party value; solo it wants specific setups to keep up with the S-tiers. (community tier · patch 0.5.4b — editorial rank, community meta consensus (maxroll · mobalytics · game8 0.5 tier lists), editorial — checked 2026-07-03)
Key Tactician notables
What each ascendancy notable actually does for the build — effect directions, not raw numbers (exact values shift every patch; check in game before committing points).
A Solid Plan
Your persistent buffs reserve far less spirit, effectively freeing up a large amount of spirit to stack extra auras, heralds, and minion/buff skills.
Right Where We Want Them
Lets your projectile damage build Pin on enemies, and pinned enemies are unable to act — a strong ranged lockdown tool.
Watch How I Do It
Grants your allies (minions, totems, party members) added attack damage based on your own weapon damage, turning your gear into team-wide offense.
Whoever Pays Best
Removes the limit on how many banners you can place and generates Glory over time, supercharging the banner-buff playstyle.
Cannons, Ready!
Grants an additional totem and increases the skill speed of your totems, expanding the deployable-firepower side of the ascendancy.
Polish That Gear
Converts a portion of your Armour and Evasion into deflection and ailment thresholds, adding defensive layers on top of the class's strong Armour scaling.
