On 2 October 2026 Behaviour Interactive posted a teaser from the official Dead by Daylight account, and within an hour the community had decided it was NieR: Automata. By the next morning that read was on every aggregator as a near-certainty.
It is a good guess. It is still a guess. Behaviour has not said the words "NieR: Automata" anywhere, and the gap between what was posted and what is being reported is wide enough that you should know which half is which before you plan a purchase around it. This article separates the two, and then uses Behaviour's own track record with licensed crossovers to work out what the thing most likely actually is. Everything here applies to the live retail build, Patch 10.1.2a of 17 September 2026.
Quick answer
- Confirmed by Behaviour: a teaser posted 2 October 2026 whose copy points at four Survivors, plus a teaser video on the official Dead by Daylight YouTube channel. The teaser art uses a stark white-on-black UI font and background styling.
- Not confirmed by Behaviour: the words NieR, Automata, 2B, 9S or A2. The official news feed on deadbydaylight.com contains zero occurrences of "NieR" as of 3 October 2026. The newest article there is the Silent Hill Collection reveal from 15 September 2026.
- Where the NieR read comes from: fans decoding the glyphs in the teaser art as NieR's in-fiction Angelic and Chaos scripts, reading out to the word "Interception". That is community decoding, not an announcement.
- It is almost certainly a Collection, not a Chapter. A Chapter ships one Killer and usually one Survivor. Four Survivors is the shape of a cosmetic Collection, and it matches The Witcher Collection exactly.
- It is probably not an October release. Behaviour's own October of Horror broadcast mapped six weeks of content and this crossover is in none of them.
- Do not pre-plan a spend. No price, no date and no character list has been published. Licensed Collections have also been pulled from the store before, with roughly a month of notice.
What did Behaviour actually post?
Two things, and both are thin on purpose.
The first is a teaser image on the official Dead by Daylight account on X, posted 2 October 2026 at 3:00 PM, which had passed 322,200 views by the following morning. The copy on it refers to four Survivors. It does not name a franchise, a character, a date, or a product type. A second teaser image followed in the same visual language: white text on black, the sort of stark system-menu typography that reads as a user interface rather than a horror logo.
The second is a teaser video on the official Dead by Daylight YouTube channel. Same material, moving. Again no franchise name.
That is the entire first-party record. There is no news post. We pulled the full article index from deadbydaylight.com directly and searched it: there is no NieR article, no unlisted draft surfacing in the feed, and the most recent entry remains the Silent Hill Collection reveal of 15 September 2026. Behaviour has not published a word about this beyond two images and a video.
Why does everyone think it is NieR: Automata?
Because of the glyphs.
The background texture in the teaser art is not decorative noise. Players who know NieR recognised it as the game's constructed scripts, the Angelic and Chaos languages that appear throughout NieR: Automata's own menus and environments. Decoded, the community read is the word "Interception". The font treatment and the black-and-white UI framing are also strongly reminiscent of YoRHa's interface design, which is one of the most distinctive menu looks in modern games.
So the inference is reasonable and it is built on something real in the image. But it is still an inference made by players, not a confirmation made by the publisher. The clearest statement of the actual status came from VGTimes, which reported the teaser and then said plainly: "Behaviour Interactive has not officially confirmed the collaboration, and its contents remain unknown."
Treat anything you read today that asserts a character roster or a release date as somebody's reasonable extrapolation wearing a headline's clothing.
Is it a Chapter or a Collection?
This is the single most useful thing to get right, because it determines whether you are buying a Killer or buying skins.
The teaser points at four Survivors. Dead by Daylight Chapters do not ship four Survivors. A Chapter ships a Killer, usually one Survivor, and usually a map. Four Survivors and no Killer teased is the shape of a cosmetic Collection, and the community caught this fast. The best-reasoned reply on the main subreddit thread put it bluntly: "Everyone here seems to be assuming that this must be a full chapter collab, but it's certainly not."
There is a precedent that matches the teaser almost exactly. The Witcher Collection, announced on Behaviour's own news page on 3 June 2025, shipped four Survivor Outfits and two Killer Outfits:
- Vittorio Toscano as Geralt of Rivia, a Legendary outfit, with new voice lines recorded by Doug Cockle, Geralt's own actor
- Sable Ward as Ciri's Visit, Very Rare
- Kate Denson as Yennefer's Song, Very Rare
- Mikaela Reid as Triss's Dream, Very Rare
- The Artist as The Leshen, a Legendary outfit with unique sounds and lobby animations
- The Knight as Eredin's End, Very Rare
Four Survivors. Teased as four Survivors. If you want a model for what a NieR crossover looks like in practice, that is the one to hold in your head, not a Chapter reveal. If you want the Killer side of that Collection in context, our The Artist guide covers how she actually plays underneath the Leshen skin.
What have past licensed Collections actually contained?
A distinction matters here, because a lot of coverage blurs it. Some licensed franchises entered Dead by Daylight as full Chapters, with a playable licensed Killer and Survivor — Silent Hill and Castlevania both arrived that way. Others arrive, or return, as cosmetic Collections that put licensed outfits onto existing characters. Behaviour has done both with the same franchise: Silent Hill came in as a Chapter years ago, and the most recent entry in Behaviour's own news feed, dated 15 September 2026, is a new Silent Hill Collection.
That is the fork this teaser sits on, and the four-Survivor framing points at the Collection side. The Witcher Collection above is the cleanest documented example of that format, and it is the one we verified line by line against Behaviour's own announcement rather than a wiki.
Two patterns from it are worth taking into a NieR guess. First, when a franchise has an iconic protagonist, that protagonist tends to get the Legendary treatment, meaning a full character replacement with its own name in the lobby, rather than a lookalike outfit. Geralt got that. The Leshen got that. Second, Behaviour is comfortable mapping a licensed character onto an existing Survivor whose silhouette is close, and shipping the rest as Very Rare cosplay-style outfits rather than true replacements. Kate Denson did not become Yennefer; she wore Yennefer's Song.
Applied to NieR, that is the realistic frame: expect 2B to be the headline, expect it on whichever Survivor fits, and expect the rest of the set to sit a tier below. The common community wish for a 2B that behaves like Geralt, a Legendary with her own identity, is plausible on precedent, but Behaviour has published nothing either way.
When could the NieR collab release?
Probably not in October, and Behaviour's own calendar is the reason.
The official October of Horror broadcast laid out a six-week schedule, and it is specific:
- Week 1 — Hallowed Blight, with blighted outfits for Jason, The Houndmaster and The Knight
- Week 2 — the Academia Rift
- Week 3 — Haunted by Daylight
- Week 4 — the Diablo Collection
- Week 5 — Day of the Dead and November Days
- Week 6 — Lights Out, plus Stranger Things content including Steven and Nancy alongside Vecna
A NieR crossover appears nowhere in that six-week map. Behaviour does not usually tease a product four to six weeks ahead of a slot it has already filled and announced. The more natural reading is that this one sits beyond the published window. November is already busy as well: Art the Clown and the Terrifier chapter are widely reported for that month, and we broke down what is known about that one in our Terrifier chapter first look.
What we are not going to do is give you a date. Behaviour has not published one, and an invented release window is exactly the kind of claim that ages into misinformation within a week. For what is genuinely live right now instead, see our Haunted by Daylight event guide and the current October Twitch drops.
Which characters are most likely?
Flagging this clearly: everything in this section is reasoning from precedent, not reporting.
NieR: Automata's cast gives Behaviour an obvious trio in 2B, 9S and A2, all androids, all with distinctive silhouettes, all Survivor-shaped rather than Killer-shaped. A fourth slot is the open question, and the machine lifeforms are the natural source if Behaviour wants something non-human in the set.
The community's leading guesses are a 2B outfit on Sable Ward, on silhouette and hair-length grounds, and a Feng Min set on the strength of the bob. Both are the kind of casting Behaviour has actually done before. Neither has any first-party support.
The one structural note worth making: NieR: Automata has no slasher villain. There is no character in that game who maps cleanly onto a Dead by Daylight Killer the way Pyramid Head or the Leshen did. That is another independent reason to expect a Survivor-weighted cosmetic set rather than a Chapter.
Should you wait, or buy in advance?
There is nothing to buy yet, so the only real decision is whether to stockpile currency. Two things worth knowing before you do.
First, no price has been published. We are not going to estimate one. Behaviour's own Witcher Collection news post did not list a single currency figure, and quoting a number that has not been published is how storefront misinformation starts.
Second, licensed Collections are not permanent. The Attack on Titan Collection is the cautionary case. It was removed from the store on 18 July 2023 at 2 PM ET, with the cutoff landing at 11:59:59 PM local time for European, New Zealand and Australian players. That set had ten outfits — eight Very Rare Survivor outfits pairing Dwight with Eren, Yui with Mikasa, Jake with Levi, Meg with Annie, Felix with Armin, Kate with Historia, Zarina with Hange and Ace with Kenny, plus two Ultra Rare Killer outfits, The Oni as the Armored Titan and The Spirit as the War Hammer Titan. It sold as two five-outfit packs at $29.99 each.
The important detail for anyone who already owned it: outfits already purchased stayed usable after removal. Delisting locks out new buyers, it does not confiscate what you have. So the practical lesson is about timing, not panic. When a licensed Collection you want does go live, buying it during its run is materially safer than assuming it will sit in the store forever.
If you are topping up currency through free routes in the meantime, the current working list is in our October 2026 codes post.
What we are not claiming
To be explicit, because most coverage of this teaser is not:
- We are not claiming Behaviour has confirmed NieR: Automata. It has not.
- We are not claiming a release date, a release month, or an event slot.
- We are not claiming a character list, a rarity breakdown or a price.
- We are not claiming the glyph decode is correct. It is a community reading of an image.
What is solid: a real first-party teaser exists, it points at four Survivors, and Behaviour's six-week October map does not include it.
FAQ
Has Behaviour confirmed the Dead by Daylight NieR: Automata collab? No. As of 3 October 2026 Behaviour has posted a teaser image and a teaser video and named no franchise. The official news feed on deadbydaylight.com has no NieR article at all.
Why does everyone say it is NieR then? The teaser art's background glyphs are NieR: Automata's in-fiction Angelic and Chaos scripts, which players decoded to the word "Interception", and the typography matches YoRHa's menu style. It is a strong community read, not an announcement.
Is this a new Chapter with a NieR Killer? Almost certainly not. The teaser points at four Survivors, which is Collection shape, not Chapter shape. NieR: Automata also has no obvious slasher-villain character to build a Killer from.
When does the NieR collab release in Dead by Daylight? No date has been published. It is likely outside October, because Behaviour's own October of Horror broadcast already filled all six weeks of that month and the crossover is in none of them.
Will 2B be a Legendary skin? Unknown. Precedent allows it, since Geralt shipped as a Legendary with newly recorded voice lines from Doug Cockle, but Behaviour has published nothing about NieR rarities.
How much will the NieR Collection cost? No price has been published. For scale only, the Attack on Titan Collection sold as two five-outfit packs at $29.99 each in 2023, but that tells you nothing reliable about this set.
Could the collab leave the store later? Yes, licensed Collections can be delisted. Attack on Titan was pulled on 18 July 2023. Outfits already owned stayed usable, but new purchases stopped.
Which Survivors are getting NieR outfits? Not announced. Community guesses centre on Sable Ward for 2B and Feng Min for a second set, on silhouette grounds only.
