Diablo 4 Season 16 Class Changes: Buffs, Nerfs & Who Wins (PTR)

TL;DR: Who wins the Diablo 4 Season 16 class changes? On the 3.3.0 PTR notes, dual-wield Barbarian, Greater Demon Warlock and Bone or Blood Core Necromancer gain the most. Double Swing doubles from 75% to 150% per swing, Abyssal Colossus Smash jumps from 700% to 1,000%, and Bone Spear rises from 160% to 175%. Druid is the biggest gamble, because upgrades and variants no longer add the Nature Magic or Shapeshifting tags. Spiritborn's top setups lose the most. The all-class cut to plan around is Banished Lord's Talisman, down from 130-150% to 80-100% Critical Strike Damage. None of this is final: the PTR closes November 3 at 10 a.m. PST, and Blizzard hasn't dated Season 16.

Patch 3.3.0 touches all eight classes, and most of the list is noise for any single player. A Rogue doesn't care about Petrify. A Warlock main needs to know whether Blazing Scream survived. This guide sorts the official 3.3.0 PTR notes by the decision you're actually making: stay on your class, switch builds or reroll when the season starts.

The ranking is our read of Blizzard's numbers, not a test of finished builds. Numbers are quoted from the notes. Verdicts are labeled as ours.

Which class gains the most in Diablo 4 Season 16?

Barbarian, Warlock and Necromancer get the cleanest damage gains, in that order. Druid could beat all three or fall behind them, depending on how its rebuilt Paragon nodes play. Here's every class on one screen:

1BarbarianDouble Swing 75% to 150% per swingBattering Ram burn 252% to 126%Strong buy for dual-wield

Our ranking leaves one thing out. Blizzard says "some features from the Season of Hell's Legacy will be carrying forward into Season 16," but those features aren't on this PTR. If runewords return, the order can move. Our Grief Season 16 guide tracks what's confirmed.

What changed for Barbarian in Season 16?

Dual-wield is the headline. Double Swing goes from 75% to 150% per swing, the Slice and Dice Variant drops its Cast Speed penalty, and the Ambidextrous Glyph goes from 8%[x] to 15%[x]. Aspect of Incendiary Fissures also doubles, from 40-60%[x] to 80-120%[x].

Three cuts matter:

  • War Cry now has diminishing returns per rank, up to a maximum of 15%. Any build stacking its ranks loses value.
  • Charge, Battering Ram Variant drops from 252% to 126% Burning damage, an exact halving.
  • Limitless Rage Aspect now only counts Fury generated by Basic Skills, though its bonus rises from 0.15-0.2%[x] to 0.5-0.75%[x].

Our call: if you were waiting for a reason to play Barbarian, this is it. Just check that your setup doesn't lean on Battering Ram.

Is Warlock nerfed in Season 16?

Blazing Scream builds are, slightly. Warlock as a class isn't. Warlock dominated the top of the Season 15 Tower, so the base cut was expected: Blazing Scream falls from 130% to 115%. Its Abyssal Oppression Variant rises from 227% to 259%, though, so the headline nerf doesn't apply evenly.

The real money moved to demons:

Warlock changeBeforeAfter
Fiend of Abaddon, Colossus Swipe455%630%
Fiend of Abaddon, Colossus Smash700%1,000%
Rampage, Abyssal Titan automatic Smashes64% (x1.5)288%
Umbral Chains periodic damage25%60%
Metamorphosis basic attack65%95%
Overmind, Abyss damage to Crowd Controlled45%120%

On the other side, Hand of the Worldbreaker drops from 290-350% to 250-300%, Moloch's Beating Flame from 20-30% to 15-20% per empowered Skill, and the Annihilation Variant halves its per-stack bonus while doubling max stacks from 100 to 200.

Our call: keep the class, plan on switching the build. Blizzard pushed power from Season 15's item-heavy peaks into demon skills.

Why is the Druid rework such a big deal?

Almost every Druid build gets recalculated. Skills no longer gain the Nature Magic or Shapeshifting tags from upgrades and variants. Those tags now sit on the base skill only, so Lightning Claw grants Storm and nothing else. Blizzard's developer note spells out the aim:

"The primary goal for Druid in Season 16 is to address tag stacking. We want to reduce Druid's ability to stack tags and their reliance on them, so builds that pick only one tag can still benefit from 4 legendary boards."

Diablo 4 Druid with a staff and wolf companions in official class art

The payoff is a rebuilt Paragon board with far fewer conditions:

  • Survival Instincts: Werebear now deals a flat 50% more damage and takes 25% less. The old bonus depended on Fortify math.
  • Inner Beast: Shapeshifting Skills deal 65% more damage.
  • Human Ingenuity: human damage bonus rises from 35-50% to 60-75%.
  • Stampede: companion bonus rises from 15-35% to 35-55%.
  • Untamed: damage per Companion Skill rises from 20% to 25%.

Storm players should test first. Storm Shepherd's 2-piece no longer consumes Spirit for damage, and its old Double Cast effect moves down from the 5-piece into the 2-piece. Resolve and Fortify are also being split apart, so Earth upgrades that granted Resolve now give Overpower or other effects. Song of the Old Mountain's 5-piece goes from 200% to 300% on paper, but Blizzard's PTR known issues list says it still gave 200% on the test server.

Our call: Werebear and Companion builds look like the safest bets. Don't copy a Season 15 Druid planner into Season 16.

Does Paladin get a real buff in Season 16?

Aura builds do. The rest of the class is more mixed. Aura Potency now scales the aura's value including Skill Ranks. Blizzard calls this "a significant increase in power for Aura Potency," then trims sources to pay for it: Cathan's Iron Conviction 2-piece goes from 55% to 40%, and Sundered Night from 160-200% to 140-180%.

Players testing it aren't all convinced. In a r/diablo4 thread with 65 comments, u/shinobi_gi wrote: "No meaningful buffs to Paladin (poor lad)." The same post argues "Bigger class upgrades went to archetypes that didn't need them." We'd push back a little on Paladin specifically, since Zealot Oath also rises from 35% to 45% and adds 15% Damage Reduction at maximum Fervor. Juggernaut has less to celebrate: Fortress's Resolve bonus falls from 4% to 2% per stack and now only applies to Juggernaut Skills.

What changed for Necromancer, Rogue, Sorcerer and Spiritborn?

Necromancer gets the safest upgrade of the four. Bone Spear and Blood Lance rise from 160% to 175%, Blood Surge's nova from 125% to 140%, and Sever's scythe from 100% to 120%. Aspect of the Great Feast doubles. The cost is sustain, with Blood Orbs down from 15% to 10% healing and Decrepify's Life Tap Variant from 10% to 5%.

Rogue trades skill bonuses for items. Ferocity upgrades fall to 4% on Penetrating Shot, Rapid Fire and Rain of Arrows, from 7%, 7% and 10%. Orphan Maker goes to 150-180% and Skyhunter to 135-175%, so bow power now sits in Uniques you have to find. Shadow Imbuement also changes behavior: reapplying it no longer refreshes the effect, it stacks for more damage.

Sorcerer gets reworks, not raw power. Incinerate now builds Intensity, and at maximum that damage bonus persists for 3 seconds after you stop channeling. Living Bomb more than doubles. Strike of Stormhorn rises from 40-60%[x] to 75-100%[x] for Ball Lightning. But Habacalva's Cauldron stops making Pyromancy free at maximum Heat, giving 50 Mana Regeneration instead, so Fire builds have a resource problem to solve again.

Spiritborn loses the most from its top setups. Stinger drops from 140% to 125%, with two of its upgrades cut as well. Bliss of the Multitude falls from 20%[x] to 15%[x] on the 2-piece and 50%[x] to 40%[x] on the 5-piece. Razor Wings is the counter-offer at 160%, plus restored Charges from Focus and Ultimate Skills, and Kwatli's Grace 5-piece rises to 225%[x].

Which gear changes affect more than one class?

Item or runeBeforeAfter
Banished Lord's Talisman, Critical Strike Damage130-150%[x]80-100%[x]
Thundergod's Blessing damage250-300%[x]300-350%[x]
Moonrise Aspect damage40-60%[x]60-80%[x]
Temerity Barrier duration8 seconds4 seconds
Que rune Offering required300500
Lac rune Offering required400600

The Banished Lord's Talisman cut is the one to plan around. At the midpoint it loses about 36% of its Critical Strike Damage roll. If your Season 15 amulet slot is built on it, that slot needs a new look. Pair this list with our Horadric Items guide, because Horadric jewelry may change which amulet you want anyway.

D4Guides also reports 14 tooltip changes missing from the notes, including March of the Stalwart Soul rolling 100-120% against the listed 70-100%. Blizzard hasn't confirmed them, so don't plan a build around them yet.

Should you reroll for Season 16?

Don't lock it in until the final patch notes. PTR numbers are test values, and Blizzard's known issues list covers problems it intends "to address by the official release of 3.3.0." Season 16 still has no official date. The December 1 figure comes from a Season 15 Reliquary countdown, not an announcement.

Use this until the notes land:

  • You play Barbarian, Necromancer or Warlock: stay. Barbarian and Necromancer buffs mostly stack on what you have. Warlocks should look at demon builds.
  • You play Spiritborn or Paladin: stay if you like the class, since neither is broken. Compare Razor Wings or aura setups before you commit.
  • You play Druid: expect a rebuild. Treat Season 16 as a new class and don't reuse your old Paragon path.
  • You play Rogue or Sorcerer: check whether your build relies on Ferocity or free Pyromancy. If it does, it's a rebuild too.
  • You want the strongest start: dual-wield Barbarian has the simplest case on paper.

Keep the rest of your Season 15 time on what still pays out. Our Season 15 end-date checklist ranks what to finish first, and the Tyrael's Boons gold guide shows where Season 16 gold income is headed. Our Season 16 PTR guide covers the other new systems.

FAQ

What are the biggest Diablo 4 Season 16 class changes? Double Swing doubles to 150% per swing, Druid upgrades stop granting Nature Magic and Shapeshifting tags, Paladin Aura Potency now counts Skill Ranks, and Abyssal Colossus Smash rises to 1,000%. All of them are PTR values from patch 3.3.0.

Is Banished Lord's Talisman nerfed in Season 16? Yes, on the PTR. Its Critical Strike Damage falls from 130-150%[x] to 80-100%[x]. It's the biggest damage cut in the general Unique section of the notes.

Is Druid nerfed in Season 16? It's rebuilt rather than simply nerfed. Druid loses tag stacking, while Werebear, Shapeshifting and Companion effects get large Paragon and Aspect buffs. Storm builds using Storm Shepherd need the most retesting.

Are the Season 16 class changes final? No. They're PTR values, the test ends November 3, 2026 at 10 a.m. PST, and Blizzard can still change them. Expect final numbers in the live 3.3.0 patch notes.

When do the class changes go live? With Season 16, which Blizzard hasn't dated as of November 3, 2026. Trackers estimate around December 1, based on the Season 15 Reliquary timer.

What is the best class for Season 16? Nobody can say yet, because no live data exists. Going by the notes alone, we'd pick dual-wield Barbarian for the simplest gain and Warlock or Necromancer as the safest long-term picks.
