Is the Modern Warfare 4 Beta Over? When You Can Play MW4 Again — and How to Be Max Rank on Day One (2026)

Quick answer (TL;DR): Yes — the Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta is over. It ran across two weekends (Early Access Aug 21–25 and Open Beta Aug 28–September 1, 2026) and there is no more MW4 to play right now. The next time you can play is Friday, October 16 — but only the Campaign, and only if you have a digital pre-order (that's a 7-day head start). Multiplayer, DMZ and the full game go live for everyone on Friday, October 23, 2026. Your beta levels and weapon XP do not carry over — only the 8 cosmetic Beta Rewards follow you to launch — so everyone starts multiplayer from Level 1 on Day One. That reset is exactly why the smart prep window is now: pre-order for the early campaign, plan your pre-load, and line up MW4 Bot Lobbies and leveling so you're maxed while everyone else is still grinding.

If you searched "is the MW4 beta over," you already felt it — you booted the game up and the servers were gone. This guide answers the three questions every player has right now: is it really over, when can you play again, and what should you do in the ~7-week gap to hit the ground running at launch. Everything below is verified against Activision's official Call of Duty channels; anything not yet confirmed is flagged.

Is the Modern Warfare 4 beta over?

Yes. The beta has fully ended. Activision ran the MW4 Open Beta over two separate weekends:

  • Early Access Weekend — August 21–25, 2026: open to anyone who pre-ordered MW4 (and Black Ops 7 owners).
  • Open Beta Weekend — August 28–September 1, 2026: open to all players on every platform, no pre-order required.

The second weekend closed on September 1, and the servers went offline with it. There is no "extended" beta and no drop-in access — when Activision says a beta concludes, the client stops connecting. As the official Call of Duty beta blog put it: "These rewards will not be available to earn after the Modern Warfare 4 Beta concludes."

So if the game won't connect, that's expected behavior, not an error or an outage. (If you are seeing a specific error message during an active session, that's different — see our MW4 server status and "is MW4 down" guide.)

When can you play Modern Warfare 4 again?

There are two dates that matter, and they're different depending on how you buy the game:

MilestoneDate (2026)Who gets in
Campaign Early AccessFriday, October 16Anyone with a digital pre-order (Standard or Vault)
Full launch — Multiplayer, DMZ, Campaign for allFriday, October 23Everyone, all platforms

That's the key nuance most people miss: the campaign unlocks a full 7 days early — October 16 — but only for digital pre-orders. Physical disc copies do not get early access. Activision confirmed it directly: "Continue the fight with Campaign Early Access starting October 16 for digital pre-orders, ahead of the full game launch on October 23."

Multiplayer and DMZ — the modes you actually tested in the beta — are not part of early access. Nobody plays MW4 multiplayer before October 23. So between now and launch, the only official way back into the game world is the campaign, and only if you pre-ordered digitally. For the full countdown, edition breakdown and pre-load timing, see our MW4 release date, pre-load & countdown guide.

Did anything I did in the beta carry over?

Mostly no — and this is the single most important thing to understand before launch.

Your beta multiplayer progression is wiped. Every level, every gun's weapon XP, every attachment unlock you earned across those two weekends is gone. The full game ships with a brand-new progression system — you level weapons, earn Apex Attachments and Prestige from scratch starting October 23. Everyone is Level 1 on Day One, no exceptions.

The one thing that follows you: the 8 cosmetic Beta Rewards. Activision confirmed "All Beta Rewards that you unlock via the game or Twitch Drops will be available in the full game when it releases on October 23." Those are skins, charms, stickers and similar cosmetics — nice to have, but they give you zero head start on rank, weapons or mastery camos.

We break the full reset down here: Does MW4 beta progress carry over? What resets and what you keep. The takeaway for prep: a clean-slate launch means the players who plan the grind before October 23 are the ones flexing max rank and gold guns in Week 1.

What's actually coming at launch (that the beta didn't show)?

Modern Warfare 4 Operators in an intense multiplayer firefight

The beta was a slice. The full game is much bigger. Confirmed for Day One via Activision and the official store listing:

  • 12 all-new 6v6 multiplayer maps — the beta only rotated a handful. See the full list in our all MW4 launch maps confirmed breakdown.
  • DMZ returns as a Day One mode — extraction-style runs into contested territory, alongside core multiplayer.
  • The full Campaign — a story that spans trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, chases through Paris and SAS night raids in Mumbai, with Captain Price back in the mix.
  • The full mastery camo grind across Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ on a shared track — the beta only exposed a fraction. See all MW4 mastery camos and what's confirmed.
  • Warzone integration in Season 1. Activision stated: "Beginning in Season 1, Call of Duty: Warzone will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression as part of a connected experience between both titles." That means MW4's arsenal, operators and battle pass become the Warzone standard shortly after launch — full Warzone integration breakdown here.

Is there another MW4 beta or way to play before launch?

Short answer: no second beta has been announced. The two-weekend Open Beta (August 21–September 1) was the full pre-launch multiplayer test, and Activision has not scheduled another. Historically, Call of Duty runs one beta window per title and does not re-open it, so plan around the beta being finished for good.

The only official way to touch MW4 before the October 23 launch is Campaign Early Access on October 16 — and again, that's campaign-only and digital-pre-order-only. There's no multiplayer trial, no "free weekend," and no early access to DMZ or Warzone integration before launch day. If you see a site or video claiming otherwise, treat it as a rumor until it's on an official Call of Duty channel — stating unconfirmed access as fact is exactly how people get scammed by fake "beta key" pages.

So the realistic timeline from today is simple: ~6 weeks of downtime, then campaign on the 16th (if you pre-ordered digitally), then the full multiplayer grind opening for everyone on the 23rd. That gap is your prep window — here's how to use it.

What should you do before October 23 to hit max rank on Day One?

This is the ~7-week window that separates the players who dominate launch from the ones grinding challenge lists into November. Here's the concrete game plan:

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer — preparing loadouts before launch

1. Pre-order digitally (if you want the campaign early). Only digital pre-orders get the October 16 campaign head start, and pre-orders also lock in your Beta Rewards and bonus operator content. If you're weighing Standard vs Vault, we compared them in the MW4 Vault Edition — is it worth it? guide. Note: MW4 is not on Game Pass at launch and is priced at $70, so subscribers will need to buy it to play Day One.

2. Sort your pre-load and PC settings now. The full-game pre-load opens a few days before launch; getting your install, drivers and Secure Boot/TPM sorted early means you're queuing at unlock, not troubleshooting. Prep your rig with best MW4 PC settings for high FPS.

3. Know the grind you're facing. Between max rank, every weapon's Apex Attachments and the full mastery camo track, unlocking everything is a serious time sink — we did the math in how long it takes to unlock everything in MW4. Because progression resets to zero, that clock starts for everyone at the same moment on October 23.

4. Decide how you want to spend that time. You have two paths on Day One: grind it yourself over dozens of hours, or start the season already ahead. This is where a service saves the launch window — private MW4 Bot Lobbies let you rack up weapon XP, camo progress and kills against bots instead of sweaty pubs, and weapon leveling and mastery camo unlocks get your loadout launch-ready without the burnout. Because everyone starts from Level 1, a head start on Day One is at its most valuable it will ever be.

Lock in your MW4 setup before launch — bot lobbies, camo + weapon leveling ready Day One (Oct 23):

- MW4 Bot Lobbies — private lobbies from $5.90 · level & camo grind on easy mode

- MW4 Weapon Leveling — max any gun · unlock every attachment

- MW4 Mastery Camo Bundle — all mastery camos · fast · secure

- MW4 Account Leveling — skip the grind · pro players

The servers are offline and there is no way to play the beta again — the client will not connect. This is expected, not an outage.

When can I play Modern Warfare 4 again? The Campaign unlocks Friday, October 16, 2026 for anyone with a digital pre-order (a 7-day head start). Multiplayer, DMZ and the full game launch for everyone on Friday, October 23, 2026. There is no multiplayer access before October 23.

Does my MW4 beta progress carry over to the full game? No — your beta levels, weapon XP and unlocks are wiped. Only the 8 cosmetic Beta Rewards you earned carry over to the full game at launch. Everyone starts multiplayer progression from Level 1 on October 23.

Do I need to pre-order to play the campaign early? Yes, and it must be a digital pre-order (Standard or Vault edition). Physical disc copies do not receive the October 16 Campaign Early Access.

Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass at launch? No. Activision confirmed MW4 is not available on Game Pass at launch and is priced at $70 — Game Pass subscribers must buy the game to play Day One. Full details in our is MW4 on Game Pass guide.

What's the fastest way to be max rank at launch? Because progression resets to zero for everyone, the fastest route on Day One is to skip the sweaty grind entirely — private MW4 Bot Lobbies and weapon leveling let you bank rank, weapon XP and camo progress from the first hour instead of over weeks.
