Palworld: How to Change Passive Skills (1.0) — Pal Surgery Table, Implants & the Breeding Route

The Palworld Pal Surgery Table Transfer Passive screen, showing a Pal's four passive-skill slots being overwritten in the 1.0 update

There is no "reroll passives" button in Palworld — which is exactly why the question "how do I change my Pal's passive skills?" floods the subreddit every week, usually right after someone hatches a near-perfect Pal saddled with one junk trait. The honest answer in 1.0 (build v1.0.5) is that you have three ways to fix a Pal's passives, they cost very different things, and the one most new players reach for first is also the one that locks you out of the strongest skills in the game. This guide covers all three — the Pal Surgery Table + Implants method (the real "edit this Pal" option), the breeding route (how the best players build a passive from scratch), and simply re-catching — plus exactly which passives you cannot implant, so you don't burn a rare module on a dead end.

Quick answer: You cannot freely edit a Pal's passives from its menu. To add or replace a passive you build a Pal Surgery Table (unlocks in the mid-30s Technology tier — see the version note below), then use an Implant module to inject one specific passive; if the Pal already has all 4 slots full, you pick one to overwrite. Implants are bought with Bounty Tokens from a Bounty Officer or with Battle Tickets from the Pal Arena merchant — but only a limited pool of common/utility passives is implantable. Top-tier "rainbow" passives like Legend cannot be implanted — those only come from breeding (set the skill as a parent's active passive and use a Special Cake) or from catching a wild Pal that already spawned with it. A Pal holds a maximum of 4 passive skills, and the same passive can never appear twice.

This article applies to Palworld 1.0, build v1.0.5 (the current live build as of October 2026). If you want the finished endgame Pals without grinding Bounty Tokens or breeding chains, our Palworld leveling service gets your account and roster to the Level 80 cap fast — then you spend your passive slots on min-maxing, not catching up.

Can you change passive skills in Palworld?

Yes — but not by opening the Pal's stat page and swapping traits like gear. Passive skills (sometimes called traits) are locked onto a Pal when it is caught or hatched, and the only way to alter that set afterward is to physically build the station that performs the operation or to make a new Pal with the passives you want.

A Pal can carry up to 4 passive skills at once, and the same passive can never appear twice on one Pal. Different passives that affect the same stat stack — so Swift (+30% movement), Runner (+20%) and Nimble (+10%) all add together on a mount. That stacking is the whole reason people obsess over getting the exact four they want: one wasted slot is a real, permanent loss of power on your main combat or work Pal.

The three methods, ranked by how most players use them:

  • Pal Surgery Table + Implants — the closest thing to "edit this specific Pal." Add or overwrite a passive directly on a Pal you already own. Great for utility/common passives; blocked from the best ones.
  • Breeding — the pro route. Build a Pal that hatches with a curated passive set from the start. The only reliable way to get rainbow passives like Legend onto a specific species.
  • Re-catching — the free route. Catch another of the same species until one spawns with a better trait roll. Cheapest, slowest, no control.

How to change passives with the Pal Surgery Table

The Pal Surgery Table is the in-game building that lets you add, replace, and even change the gender of Pals in your party for a cost. It is the one tool that modifies a Pal you already have, so it is what most guides mean by "how to change passive skills."

Unlocking it: the Pal Surgery Table sits in the mid-30s of the Technology tree. Sources disagree on the exact tier — TheGamer and several Steam community guides list it at Technology Level 36, while the Palworld wiki (Fandom) and some community posts put it at Level 38 — so treat "around Tech 36–38" as the target and check your own tech menu. It costs a small number of Technology Points to unlock and ordinary base materials to craft. Place it in a base like any other station.

Using it: interact with the table, choose a Pal from your party, and you'll see its current passive slots. From there you:

  • Select an Implant (the module that carries the passive you want to inject).
  • Choose the slot — if the Pal already has 4 passives, you pick which existing one to overwrite. Even a full 4/4 Pal can be edited this way; the old passive is simply replaced.
  • Pay the Gold Coin cost and confirm. The new passive is applied instantly.

That's the mechanic players are really asking for: you can force a specific passive onto a specific Pal, as long as you have the Implant for it. The catch is where those Implants come from and which ones exist.

Where to get Implant modules

Implants are consumable items, one per passive type, and you buy them rather than craft them. Two reliable sources in 1.0:

  • Bounty Officer — pay with Bounty Tokens, which you earn by hunting the wanted human NPCs that spawn around the map. Finding a Bounty Officer permanently marks that NPC on your map so you can return to restock.
  • Pal Arena merchant — pay with Battle Tickets, earned through the Pal Arena combat challenges.

Both currencies are endgame-adjacent — you won't be swimming in Bounty Tokens at Level 20 — which is why the Surgery Table is realistically a mid-to-late-game tool, not an early fix.

The passives you CANNOT implant

This is the trap that wastes everyone's first big Implant run: the strongest passives in the game are not available as Implants. The implantable pool is weighted toward common and utility traits — the Tier 1–3 combat and work passives — while the mutation-only "rainbow" passives are locked out of the Surgery Table entirely.

That rainbow set — Legend, Divine Dragon, Sky Strider, Heavily Armored (Immune to Explosion Damage), and Serene/Serious at the top end — cannot be bought as a module. They're the mutation-only passives that only appear on mutated hatches or carefully bred lines. If you want Legend (its top-tier mix of Attack, Defense and +15% movement speed) on your Jetragon, the Surgery Table will never offer it. Those come only from breeding or from catching a Pal that already has them. Plan your Implant spending around the common/utility tier and save the rainbow passives for the breeding farm.

How to get the best passives by breeding

Breeding is how top players build a Pal with a perfect passive set from birth — including the rainbow passives the Surgery Table won't sell you. The mechanic is inheritance: a hatched Pal inherits a mix of its two parents' passive skills.

The reliable method:

  • Set the passives you want as the parents' active passive skills. The child pulls from the combined pool, so the fewer "junk" passives the parents carry, the higher the odds the child inherits the ones you want.
  • Use the Special Cake in the Breeding Farm. The Special Cake makes offspring "more likely to inherit multiple Passive Skills from their parents" — it's the single biggest lever on passing down a curated set. It's also the most demanding recipe in the game, unlocking at Technology Level 74 (20 Flour · 8 Caramel Cotton Candy · 15 Milk · 15 Egg · 2 Mammorest Meat), so it's a genuine endgame commitment.
  • Chain it. Breed a clean two-passive parent, then breed that child with another clean parent to layer a third and fourth passive in. This is how a Pal ends up with, say, Legend + Ferocious + Lucky + Swift and nothing wasted.

The free method: just re-catch the Pal

If you don't have Implants or a breeding setup yet, the oldest trick still works: catch another of the same species. Every wild Pal rolls its passives on spawn, so catching five Lamball gives you five different passive sets to pick from. It costs only Pal Spheres and time, gives you zero control over what you get, and is best for early-game when you just want a "good enough" worker rather than a min-maxed fighter.

Combine the methods in practice: catch a decent base, breed to lock in the rainbow passive you can't buy, then use the Surgery Table to top off the last slot with a utility Implant. That's the full pipeline experienced players run.

FAQ

Can you remove a passive skill without replacing it in Palworld? Not directly — there's no "delete passive" button. The Pal Surgery Table only overwrites a passive with a new one from an Implant, so to get rid of a bad trait you replace it with something better. The only other way to "remove" it is to breed or catch a fresh Pal that never had it.

What Technology Level is the Pal Surgery Table? It unlocks in the mid-30s of the Technology tree. Most guides list Technology Level 36, though the Palworld wiki lists 38 — check your own tech menu, as it's one of the first stations past the Level 35 wall. It costs Technology Points plus standard base materials to build.

Why can't I implant Legend or other rainbow passives? The implantable pool is limited to the common and utility (Tier 1–3) passives. Mutation-only rainbow passives — Legend, Divine Dragon, Sky Strider, Heavily Armored, Serene — are excluded from the Surgery Table. They can only be obtained by breeding or by catching a Pal that already spawned with them.

How many passive skills can a Pal have? A maximum of 4 at once, and the same passive can never appear twice on one Pal. Different passives that buff the same stat stack together, which is why filling all four slots with the right traits matters so much on your main combat and mount Pals.

Do Implants work on any Pal? Yes — Implants are not species-locked. You can inject the same utility passive onto any Pal in your party at the Surgery Table, provided you have the module and can pay the Gold cost. Species only matters for breeding inheritance, not for implanting.

Is it better to breed or use the Surgery Table? Use the Surgery Table for quick utility fixes on a Pal you already like (a missing work or movement passive), and breed when you want a top-tier combat Pal with rainbow passives from birth. The Surgery Table can't give you Legend; breeding can't be done instantly. Serious min-maxers do both.

Change passives fast

Fixing passives is one of the slowest grinds in Palworld — Bounty Tokens for Implants, Special Cake chains for breeding, and a Level 80 roster before any of it matters. If you'd rather skip to the part where you're actually optimizing builds instead of grinding to reach them:
