Half the Pal Sphere guides online are wrong, and it costs you Pals. They were written during early access, so they list the old capture-bonus number, miss the top-tier Ancient Sphere that 1.0 added, and never explain the one stat that actually decides whether a throw sticks: Capture Power. This guide fixes all of it. It ranks every sphere tier in Palworld 1.0 by the only number that matters, shows exactly how to push your catch rate on the Pals that fight back — Alpha field bosses, Tower Bosses, Legendaries — and spells out the capture trick on the World Tree boss that, done wrong, soft-locks the endgame.
Quick answer: Palworld 1.0 has seven sphere tiers, each with a fixed Capture Power that the target Pal's level is subtracted from — the bigger the gap, the better your odds. In order: Pal Sphere (7) → Mega (unlocks Lv.14) → Giga (Lv.20) → Hyper (Lv.27) → Ultra (Lv.35) → Legendary (Lv.44, Capture Power 38) → Ancient Sphere (Capture Power ~64), the 1.0 top tier you find from expeditions, chests and salvage rather than craft on the tech tree. Three free multipliers stack on top: throw from behind the Pal, drop its HP into the red, and inflict a status effect. For permanent, account-wide gains, build a Statue of Power (Technology Lv.9) and feed it Lifmunk Effigies — there are 605 across Palpagos and 353 fully max your Capture Power. Catching is also the fastest XP in the game, so the Pals worth chasing — Alphas, Tower Bosses, Legendaries — double as your leveling engine.
If the climb to 80 is the part you want to skip, our Palworld leveling service handles it on PC, Xbox and PlayStation, on your own world or a dedicated server.

How do Pal Spheres work in Palworld?
Every sphere has one hidden number — Capture Power — and the capture math is built around it. The game subtracts the target Pal's level from your sphere's Capture Power to get a "level gap," then runs that gap through a formula that rewards low HP and status effects. The practical takeaway: a sphere two or three tiers below the Pal you are throwing at will simply bounce, no matter how many you waste.
Per the official Palworld Wiki's Capture Power page, the exact factors that feed into the Capture Power used in a throw are: the sphere tier, Lifmunk Effigies collected, Sphere Modules equipped, a critical hit on the throw, and some party-Pal abilities. The wiki states the capture chance scales off the level gap "raised to the ninth power" — which is the technical way of saying a handful of levels changes your odds by an order of magnitude. That is why tier and multipliers matter so much more than throwing volume.
Two confirmed 1.0 changes rewrote the old advice:
- The Capture Bonus now completes at 5 catches of a species, not 12 — a direct quote from Pocketpair's patch notes: "Reduced the number of captures required to complete a Capture Bonus from 12 to 5." If a guide tells you to catch twelve of something, it is from early access.
- The whole capture-rate curve was retuned for 1.0 so Pals are easier to catch across the board. Early-access catch-rate tables are no longer accurate.
What are all the Pal Sphere tiers in Palworld 1.0?
There are seven tiers in 1.0. Six are crafted recipes you unlock in the Technology tree; the seventh — the Ancient Sphere — is a 1.0 addition you obtain rather than craft. Capture Power is the number to read; everything else is cost.
| Sphere | Capture Power | Tech unlock | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pal Sphere | 7 | Starter | Base tier; useless on anything much above Lv.10 |
| Mega Sphere | 14 | Level 14 | First real upgrade; early-game workhorse |
| Giga Sphere | 20 | Level 20 | Mid-game; needs Ingots on top of Paldium |
| Hyper Sphere | 27 | Level 27 | Mid-game standard once Metal gear lands |
| Ultra Sphere | 33 | Level 35 | Late-game; reserve for rare or high-level targets |
| Legendary Sphere | 38 | Level 44 | Strongest craftable sphere; purple |
| Ancient Sphere | ~64 | Not crafted | 1.0 top tier; from expeditions, salvage, fishing & chests |
The unlock levels (Mega 14, Giga 20, Hyper 27, Ultra 35, Legendary 44) and the Legendary Sphere's Capture Power of 38 are confirmed on palworld.wiki.gg, which lists the Legendary as "the sixth tier of Pal Spheres." The Ancient Sphere sits above all of them at roughly 64 Capture Power per community capture-rate trackers — nearly double the Legendary — which is why it is the sphere you save for the hardest catches in the game and the one guides recommend for capturing Legendary Merchants and other high-resistance targets.
Do not craft spheres you have outleveled. Once you can make Hyper Spheres, the Mega and Giga recipes are mostly dead weight — the only reason to keep a stock of lower tiers is for cheap, low-level species you are farming for Capture Bonuses.
How do you increase Capture Power (and actually catch hard Pals)?
Sphere tier is the floor. These four levers raise your real catch rate on top of it, and three of them are free:
- Throw from behind the Pal. A sphere thrown at a Pal's back gets an increased capture chance — the single most-ignored free bonus in the game. Bait the Pal to face your mount or a base Pal, then flank it.
- Drop its HP into the red. The formula weights low HP heavily (full HP applies roughly a 0.77 factor; near-zero HP pushes it to 1.0). Whittle a tough Pal down before you start throwing — but do not one-shot it.
- Inflict a status effect. Sleep, poison, burn and the like add a status bonus multiplier to the throw. A sleep Pal in your party turns otherwise-impossible catches routine.
- Max your Capture Power permanently at a Statue of Power (next section).
Build a Statue of Power and farm Lifmunk Effigies
The Statue of Power is the best long-term catch investment in the game and it is cheap. It unlocks at Technology Level 9 and costs 20 Stone + 10 Paldium Fragments to build; you can also find pre-built ones in Abandoned Churches. Its job is to take Lifmunk Effigies — the green glowing collectibles scattered across the map — and convert them into permanent, account-wide Capture Power.
The effigy facts matter because 1.0 split effigies by Pal type and the wrong one is useless for catching:
- Lifmunk Effigy → Capture Power. This is the only effigy line that raises your catch rate. There are 605 Lifmunk Effigies across Palpagos Islands, and 353 of them fully max your Capture Power, per the official Lifmunk Effigy wiki page.
- Relaxaurus Effigy → EXP, not Capture Power. Do not confuse the two. There are only 4 Relaxaurus Effigies, each giving +12.5% EXP (+50% total) — a leveling buff, covered in our Palworld effigy locations guide.
Effigies glow green at night and are easy to spot from a flying mount, so make effigy runs part of your early map sweeps. One known launch bug: offering effigies sometimes doesn't visibly move the catch-rate number on screen even though the bonus is applied — trust the turn-in, not the reticle readout.
How do you catch Alpha Pals and field bosses?
Alpha Pals — the crowned, oversized field bosses — are both the best loot and, for most players, the hardest catches before endgame. Three rules:
- Bring the right tier. An Alpha ten or more levels above your sphere's Capture Power is a coin-flip at best. If you are catching a Lv.40+ Alpha, you want Hyper at minimum, Ultra or Legendary ideally.
- Fight it down first, then flank. Burn its HP to the red bar, land a status if you can, and throw from behind. The combined multipliers routinely turn a sub-5% reticle chance into a reliable catch.
- Capture, don't kill. Captured Alphas give the same loot plus the Pal itself, and catching counts toward the 5-stack Capture Bonus. Because capture XP is player-level-scaled, chaining Alpha catches is some of the densest XP in the game — which is exactly why catching is a leveling strategy, not just a collection one.
For specific marquee targets, the same mechanics apply with a bigger sphere: our Jetragon catch guide and Frostallion guide both come down to tier, HP, and a back-throw.

Do you have to catch Tower Bosses and Panthalus?
Tower Bosses are a different animal — they are scripted human-plus-Pal duels, not wild catches, so you do not throw spheres at the nine Tower Bosses. You defeat them for their Ancient Technology Points. That part is simple.
Panthalus is the exception that trips everyone. Panthalus is the new 1.0 World Tree gate boss, summoned via the Echoing Flute questline — and you must CAPTURE Panthalus, not kill it. You then need Panthalus in your active party at the World Tree terminal to drop the barrier. Kill it instead of catching it and you have to re-summon and re-fight the entire encounter. This is the number-one endgame mistake in Palworld 1.0, and it is purely a capture problem: bring high-tier spheres (Ancient Spheres if you have them), soften Panthalus, and throw. If you are on a dedicated server, update first — pre-1.0.2 builds disconnected players mid-Panthalus fight.
Palworld sphere tiers at a glance
| Situation | Sphere to use |
|---|---|
| Starting out, catching Lv.1–10 Pals | Pal Sphere |
| Early game, Capture-Bonus farming low-level species | Mega / Giga |
| Mid game, general catching | Hyper Sphere |
| Late game, rare or high-level targets | Ultra Sphere |
| Legendaries, high-level Alphas | Legendary Sphere |
| Hardest catches, Legendary Merchants, Panthalus | Ancient Sphere |
The current live build is 1.0.5 (console tag 1.102.999, September 2026), a texture and map-icon hotfix that left catch mechanics, the level-80 cap and the 287-Pal roster unchanged — so this tier list is accurate as of the latest patch.
FAQ
How many Pal Sphere tiers are there in Palworld 1.0? Seven: Pal Sphere, Mega, Giga, Hyper, Ultra and Legendary Sphere (all crafted via the Technology tree), plus the Ancient Sphere added in 1.0, which you obtain from expeditions, salvage, fishing and chests rather than crafting.
What is Capture Power in Palworld? It is the hidden stat that decides whether a throw sticks. The game subtracts the Pal's level from your sphere's Capture Power, and the resulting gap is raised to the ninth power — so even a few levels of difference swing your odds dramatically. Capture Power comes from the sphere tier, Lifmunk Effigies, Sphere Modules, critical throws and some party-Pal abilities.
What is the best Pal Sphere in Palworld? The Ancient Sphere, at roughly 64 Capture Power — nearly double the Legendary Sphere's 38. It is the 1.0 top tier and the sphere to save for the hardest catches, including Legendary Merchants and Panthalus. The strongest craftable sphere is the Legendary Sphere, unlocked at Technology Level 44.
How do I increase my catch rate in Palworld? Use a sphere whose Capture Power exceeds the Pal's level, throw from behind, drop the Pal's HP into the red, inflict a status effect like sleep, and permanently raise your Capture Power by turning in Lifmunk Effigies at a Statue of Power (353 effigies max it out).
How many catches do I need for the Capture Bonus? Five catches of the same species in Palworld 1.0 — reduced from twelve in early access. Each completed Capture Bonus awards a large, player-level-scaled chunk of XP, which is why catching is the fastest way to level.
Do you have to catch Panthalus in Palworld? Yes. Panthalus, the 1.0 World Tree gate boss, must be captured, not killed — you need it in your active party at the World Tree terminal to drop the barrier. Killing it forces you to re-summon and re-fight the encounter.
Where do you get the Ancient Sphere in Palworld? You do not craft it on the Technology tree. Ancient Spheres come from Expeditions, salvaging, fishing spots and rare treasure chests — stockpile them for high-resistance catches rather than using them on ordinary Pals.
The bottom line
Pal Spheres are not interchangeable — each tier is a Capture Power number, and throwing a tier you have outgrown just wastes crafting materials. Match the sphere to the target, stack the three free multipliers (back-throw, low HP, status), and sink your early Lifmunk Effigies into a Statue of Power for permanent gains. Then point all of it at the Pals that pay out: Alphas, Legendaries and the capture-only Panthalus gate. Every one of those catches is also a wall of XP, so a good sphere game and a fast level climb are the same project.
