Quick answer: what is the Luminary ascendancy in PoE 3.29?
The Luminary is the new Scion ascendancy in Patch 3.29 (Curse of the Allflame), and its entire identity is one thing: it is the only class in Path of Exile that can hire a Mercenary of Trarthus permanently. Its starting node, Noble Blood, lets you keep up to three permanent Mercenaries at once — one active in combat, two reserved in your hideout — and freely swap their gear, effectively giving you a second character to equip. You then spend your remaining ascendancy points on nodes that either turn the Mercenary into your damage dealer (a merc-carry / aurabot playstyle) or turn it into a bodyguard that tanks hits while you deal damage. Like every class, you choose your ascendancy and earn your first ascendancy points by completing the Normal Labyrinth.
That is the whole class in one paragraph. The rest of this guide covers every ascendancy node, both playstyles, the link-skill system that powers merc-carry builds, how to gear your Mercenary, the 3.29.1 buffs that made the class stronger, and how to start a league as a Luminary. If you'd rather skip the leveling grind and get straight to endgame, our PoE boosting and carry services cover leveling, Labs and pinnacle bosses.
How does the Luminary work? The permanent Mercenary system
To understand the Luminary you first need the Mercenary system it is built on. Mercenaries of Trarthus are sword-for-hire allies who appear in your maps from Act 3 onward. Any character — not just a Luminary — can duel one, wager gold on a piece of its gear, win that item, and take the Mercenary along as an ally. The catch for a normal character is that the Mercenary only sticks around for a limited number of areas before leaving.
The Luminary flips that "limited" into "permanent." One important detail that makes the class pure upside: having a Mercenary along does not count as a party member, so your monster life, item quantity and item rarity are unaffected. Unlike the original Mercenaries of Trarthus league, the ally is bonus power with no scaling penalty attached.
We cover the duel-and-Warrant acquisition loop in depth in our companion PoE Mercenaries guide (3.29) — this article stays focused on the ascendancy itself.
What are all the Luminary ascendancy nodes?
The Luminary tree forces one choice early (permanent hiring) and then branches into support-focused or damage-focused directions. You have limited points, so you cannot take everything. Here is what each node does, verified against maxroll and mobalytics:
- Starting node — grants 15% increased damage to your Mercenary and their minions, plus 5% increased light radius. This is your baseline before you branch out.
- Noble Blood — the core of the class. It lets you permanently hire any Mercenary you find, keep up to three at once (1 active, 2 reserved in town/hideout), and freely swap their gear. You level this through your first ascendancy, leaving roughly six points to distribute afterward.
- Legendary Arms — by default a hired Mercenary cannot wear Unique items; this notable lets it equip unique weapons, shields and quivers and grants 8% more damage per unique item equipped. Note: unique body armour is still off the table, so the old Doryani's Prototype cheese setups do not work here.
- Legendary Item — a second unique-enabler node that widens the categories of unique gear your Mercenary can wear, feeding the same "fully-kitted-out merc" scaling.
- Oath of Fealty — makes Link skills less costly and gives them infinite attachment duration, and crucially, if your Mercenary dies the link owner no longer dies with it. This is the strongest support-path pick and a lifesaver in Hardcore.
- Golden Glory — increases and reductions to light radius also apply to the effect of your Link skill buffs on your Mercenary. Combined with the 5% base light radius, this opens light-radius stacking as a scaling vector.
- Loyal Bodyguard — a defensive node: 20% of hits are taken from your Mercenary's life first, and if your Mercenary's life is lower than yours, it recoups 40% of the damage as life. The heart of the bodyguard playstyle.
- Bestowed Knighthood — your Mercenary taunts on hit and gains increased effect of your non-curse auras. Pure defensive/utility layering.
Which Luminary playstyle should you pick?
The tree naturally splits into two build directions. Pick one before you spend your six free points:
1. Merc-Carry (aurabot playstyle). Your Mercenary does the killing; you are the support. You feed it auras, Link buffs and defensive layers, then Shield Charge around the map while it deletes packs. Priority nodes are Oath of Fealty and Golden Glory for permanent Link uptime and buff scaling, plus Legendary Arms so your merc can wear damage uniques. This is the flashier, higher-ceiling direction.
2. Bodyguard (self-damage playstyle). You do the killing; your Mercenary tanks for you. You run a strong self-damage skill while the Mercenary soaks hits through Loyal Bodyguard's damage diversion and Bestowed Knighthood's taunt, providing auras and utility on the side. This direction is more flexible across mapping and bossing and is friendlier to players who don't want to build two characters at once.
Because the Luminary is a normal ascendancy (not one of the restrictive corrupted setups), you can also slot Forbidden Flesh/Flame jewels to steal a notable from another ascendancy for extra scaling.
How do Link skills power a merc-carry Luminary?
Link skills are the engine of the merc-carry direction — they tether you to your Mercenary and transfer power to it. The key ones to know in 3.29:
- Flame Link — grants your Mercenary added fire damage equal to 5% of your maximum life. Pair it with a life-stacking Scion and almost any skill on the merc becomes viable.
- Destructive Link — gives your Mercenary critical strike chance equal to your main-hand weapon's crit. Run a high-crit weapon yourself and your merc inherits it.
- Soul Link — the link target takes less damage, with 30% of hits against it taken from your energy shield first. Built for ES-stacking aurabots.
- Protective Link — gives the link target block chance equal to your maximum block, for a near-unkillable merc.
- Intuitive Link — lets your supported spells trigger through your Mercenary; Oath of Fealty removes the usual "die when your link target dies" downside that made this risky.
You do not need to memorise all of these — you need to know that this is where a Luminary's power comes from, which is why Oath of Fealty and Golden Glory are so highly valued.

How do you gear a permanent Mercenary?
The gear slots on a permanent Mercenary work like a second character sheet, with one rule to remember: the item level of gear you can equip is capped by the area level where you first found that Mercenary. Higher-level zones produce better long-term allies, so it's worth re-hiring a strong Mercenary in a high-tier map rather than settling for an early-campaign one.
A few Uniques stand out as Mercenary enablers (all Legendary Arms / Legendary Item territory). The standout is The Hallowed Monarch helm, whose kill-a-rare effect grants your Mercenary a random slain rare's modifiers for 60 seconds — the community calls it "Headhunter for your merc." If you're chasing that snowball feeling on your main character instead, a real Headhunter belt does the same job for you directly. Kitting out a merc with several uniques adds up fast, and buying the pieces outright with PoE currency is far quicker than gambling drops.
What did 3.29.1 and 3.29.2 change for the Luminary?
The launch version of the class was strong, and the patches made it stronger. Verified against the official 3.29.1 patch notes (pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3991672):
- The permanent-Mercenary damage penalty now scales gradually and is negligible before level 45, so leveling a merc alongside you feels smooth rather than punishing.
- Infamous Mercenaries spawn 50–100% more often depending on map tier — more high-end recruits to choose from.
- Revived Mercenaries can rejoin areas, and permanently-hired Mercenaries now gain quantity and rarity buffs from Golden Lanterns collected in Charts and Voyages, tying the class directly into the league's money loop.
3.29.1 also added a dedicated Atlas notable for this archetype. As the official patch notes put it:
"Contract Killers — Allied Mercenaries in your Maps deal 100% more Damage against Mercenaries and Rogue Exiles."
That notable, combined with the Trarthan Scarab line and the Loot and Pillage Atlas passive (Mercenaries drop all their gear when defeated), makes farming Mercenaries and their Warrants a genuine currency strategy in its own right — one that slots neatly into a wider 3.29 currency-farming plan.
How should you start a league as a Luminary?
Going Luminary from level 1 is awkward because your ascendancy does nothing until you've found a good Mercenary, and early-campaign Mercenaries are weak. Two common solutions:
- Zoomancer, then respec. Start as a Scion Ascendant running a minion combo (Necromancer + Elementalist, e.g. Absolution) to clear the campaign, then respec into Luminary once you've found or bought a strong Mercenary. This is the safest league-start path.
- Trade for a Warrant. Because Warrants are tradable, you can buy the Warrant of a strong Mercenary and skip the RNG entirely — you'll still need enough gold and a working build to win the duel, so line that up first.
Either way, the guaranteed Mercenary spawn in the Act 3 Sceptre of God means you can technically have a permanent ally scaling with you from the campaign onward. If you'd rather hand the campaign grind to someone else and jump straight to a geared endgame character, that's exactly what a leveling or Lab carry service is for.
FAQ
Is the Luminary the only class that can keep a permanent Mercenary? Yes. Any character can temporarily hire a Mercenary of Trarthus for a limited number of areas, but only a Scion who has taken the Noble Blood node on the Luminary ascendancy can make them permanent, keep up to three, and freely swap their gear.
Do I have to swap Mercenaries between mapping and bossing? Not necessarily. Many players run one all-rounder rather than micromanaging swaps — a Mercenary with a strong clear setup plus a single-target option handles both. You can keep two extra Mercenaries in reserve in your hideout for specialised jobs, but a single well-geared all-rounder is the low-hassle default. Community discussion in the 3.29 build threads leans heavily toward "one good merc" over constant swapping.
Does having a Mercenary reduce my loot or make monsters tankier? No. Unlike the original Mercenaries of Trarthus league, a Luminary's Mercenary does not count as a party member, so monster life, item quantity and item rarity are unaffected. It is pure added power with no scaling penalty.
When do I get the Luminary ascendancy? Like every class, you pick your ascendancy and earn your first two ascendancy points by completing the Normal Labyrinth. You allocate Noble Blood there first, and after that baseline you have roughly six points to spend on the support or damage branch as you complete the harder Labs.
Can my Mercenary wear unique items? Only with the right nodes. By default a hired Mercenary cannot equip Uniques. Legendary Arms unlocks unique weapons, shields and quivers (and gives 8% more damage per unique equipped), and Legendary Item widens the categories further — but unique body armour stays off-limits, so a few classic cheese setups don't transfer.
Is the Luminary good for a league starter? It's strong but awkward to start cold because it needs a Mercenary online first. Most players either league-start as a minion Scion Ascendant and respec into Luminary once they've secured a good Mercenary, or trade for a Warrant to skip the RNG. After the 3.29.1 change that makes the merc damage penalty negligible before level 45, leveling one is much smoother than at launch.
The bottom line on the 3.29 Luminary
The Luminary is the most novel ascendancy Path of Exile has added in a long time: a class whose build is, quite literally, another character standing next to you. Noble Blood makes the Mercenary permanent; Legendary Arms and Legendary Item let you gear it; Oath of Fealty and Golden Glory turn it into a carry; Loyal Bodyguard and Bestowed Knighthood turn it into a tank. Decide which of those two jobs you want the Mercenary to do, spend your six free points accordingly, and you have one of the most flexible setups of the league.
