PoE2 Runeforging Guide: How Runes of Aldur Works & the Best Runes to Farm (0.5.4)

Runeforging is the crafting system at the heart of Path of Exile 2's Runes of Aldur league (patch 0.5 Return of the Ancients, currently 0.5.4), and it's also one of the most misunderstood. It quietly turns ordinary farming into a currency printer: every map you run spawns Verisium Remnants that drop Verisium and over 150 new runes, and the Verisium Anvil lets you bolt a fresh defensive layer — Runic Ward — onto your armour. Get the loop right and you fund Divines while gearing for the endgame at the same time.

This guide explains exactly how Runeforging and the Runes of Aldur mechanic work in 0.5.4, the fastest way to farm Verisium and runes, which runes are actually worth chasing, and where the real money is — so you can stop fumbling the recipe screen and start banking Divines.

Quick Answer (TL;DR)

  • Runeforging is unlocked early in Act 1 after you discover Verisium and talk to Farrow. It uses the town Verisium Anvil to grant Runic Ward to armour and to upgrade weapons, armour and Uniques.
  • Runic Ward is a new defensive layer that protects you from death; on gear at or below item level 55 it's added with no penalty to base defences, above that it costs some armour/evasion/energy shield.
  • Verisium is the crafting metal (stack size 1,000). It drops from the empowered monster waves at Verisium Remnants (a.k.a. Ezomyte Remnants) — runestones that appear in every area from Act 1 onward.
  • More rune slots = more reward. Each rune you slot into a Remnant's Runeshape recipe adds another empowered wave; high-slot Remnants (7+ slots) are the best Verisium and rune farms.
  • Best money runes to chase: Aldur's Legacy, Serle's Triumph and the Masterwork Rune — rare drops (Aldur's Legacy traded around 30+ Divine early league). Farm them from megaliths in maps.
  • The play: farm Remnants as you map → sell stacked Verisium and rare runes for Divine Orbs, or buy Verisium/Divines to skip the grind entirely.

Always check live prices on poe.ninja before you sell — the Runes of Aldur economy moves fast and rune values swing day to day.

What Is Runeforging in PoE2?

Runeforging is the Kalguuran crafting system introduced with the Runes of Aldur league. You unlock it in Act 1: once you find your first Verisium and meet Farrow, completing his quest opens the Verisium Anvil in town. As the official PoE2 wiki puts it: "Granting Runic Ward to a piece of armour protects its wearer from death."

At the Anvil you can do three core things:

  • Add Runic Ward to an armour piece — a new defensive buffer that absorbs incoming damage and saves you from a hit that would otherwise kill you.
  • Upgrade low-level weapons and armour (item level 55 and below) so an early base scales into the endgame.
  • Runeforge Uniques — a feature that unlocks deeper into the campaign (Act 3) and lets you reinforce or modify Unique items with Kalguuran power.

The whole system runs on Verisium, so the more you understand the Verisium economy, the more Runeforging does for you. (For the deep dive on the metal itself, see our PoE2 Verisium Farming Guide and the new Liquid Verisium Guide.)

How Do Verisium Remnants Work?

Verisium Remnants — large runestones with empty sockets, also widely called Ezomyte Remnants by the community — are the league mechanic you'll interact with the most. They spawn in campaign and endgame areas alike, and they're where both your Verisium and your runes come from.

Here's the loop:

  • Find a Remnant as you clear an area. It shows a set of empty rune slots and a Runeshape combination (a recipe).
  • Slot your own runes into the recipe. Each rune you add lights up another part of the combination and triggers an extra wave of empowered monsters.
  • Commit and fight. Detonating the Remnant applies the effect of a random slotted rune to the monsters in the explosion chain; clearing the waves drops Verisium, runes, and other currency.
  • Pick your reward from the Runic Recipe payout.

The single most important rule: slot count is everything. A Remnant that supports 7+ rune slots (some can roll 8–10) means more waves, more Verisium per Remnant, and better rune rewards. GGG even acknowledged the tier expectation in its own bug forum — a thread titled "verisium remnants have at least 7 rune slots does not guarantee 7 rune slots" — so prioritise the chunky Remnants and don't waste good runes on tiny ones.

Standard5–6Steady Verisium while mapping
Large7+Best Verisium/hour, rare rune chances

How to Farm Verisium Fast (0.5.4)

Verisium farming is just disciplined mapping with the Remnant loop bolted on. The fastest, most consistent setup:

  • Run Remnants in every map — never skip one. The farm scales with how many (and how big) you complete.
  • Push high-slot Remnants. A single 8–10 slot Remnant out-earns several small ones. Carry a stock of cheap, common runes to fill slots so you can always max the recipe.
  • Stack map density. Mechanics that add monster packs (Breach, Expedition, Delirium) multiply your Remnant rewards. Pair Runeforging farming with your atlas strategy — our 0.5.4 Currency Farming Tier List ranks the best layouts.
  • Use the atlas tree. The 0.5.4 Runes of Aldur Atlas Passive Tree has nodes that boost Remnant frequency and rewards — spec into them. See the Expedition Atlas Passive Tree Guide for where to point your points.
  • Don't sit on Verisium. It spikes hard in the first 48–72 hours of any patch and then settles. If you're not crafting, sell into demand or convert to Divines.

Reality check on rates: Verisium per hour depends entirely on your map tier, density and Remnant size, so ignore any single "X per hour" number you see — it's setup-specific. The honest version: a clean high-tier map loop with maxed Remnants is one of the best passive currency streams in 0.5.4 because you're earning Verisium and rune drops and normal map loot at once.

Best Runes to Farm in Runes of Aldur

With 150+ runes in the pool, most are common filler — but a handful are genuine chase items that print Divines. These are the ones worth identifying on the ground and pulling out of your farm:

  • Aldur's Legacy — a Legacy Rune created by destroying Ezomyte/Kalguuran Unique items, socketable into Ezomyte gear. It traded around 30+ Divine early in the league and is the headline chase rune. Don't destroy every Unique to make one — only sacrifice low-value bases.
  • Serle's Triumph — another high-value rare rune surfaced through megalith farming.
  • Masterwork Rune — a top-tier rune that enables meta crafting and combinations; consistently one of the most valuable drops.

Where the rares come from: once you're mapping, prioritise megaliths — the in-map structures that gate the best rune drops. Remnants give you volume; megaliths give you the jackpots. Always confirm a rune's price on poe.ninja before you list it, because the top runes can swing by Divines within a day.

Is Runic Ward Worth It?

Yes — and the timing rule is simple. Below item level 55, add Runic Ward freely: it costs nothing off your base defences, so it's pure upside on a levelling or budget piece. Above level 55, Runic Ward starts eating into your armour/evasion/energy shield, so weigh it: on a defensive chest where survivability matters more than raw mitigation it's often still worth it; on a piece you're stacking pure defence on, it may not be.

Because Runic Ward "protects its wearer from death," it's a strong layer for hardcore and high-investment characters pushing pinnacle content — exactly the fights where a single buffer can save a build.

Where the Real Money Is

Runeforging is a two-sided economy, and you can win on either side:

  • Sell the metal and the rares. Stacked Verisium and chase runes (Aldur's Legacy, Masterwork) convert straight into Divine Orbs. This is the cleanest passive income in 0.5.4.
  • Buy in to skip the grind. If you'd rather spend your time on builds and bossing than running Remnants, buying Verisium or Divines outright is the fastest catch-up.

FAQ

How do you unlock Runeforging in PoE2? You unlock it in Act 1. After you find your first Verisium and meet Farrow, completing his quest grants access to the Verisium Anvil in town, where you apply Runic Ward and upgrades. Deeper Unique-upgrading options unlock later in the campaign.

What is Runic Ward and is it worth it? Runic Ward is a defensive layer added to armour at the Verisium Anvil that protects you from death. On gear at item level 55 or below it's added with no penalty to base defences, so it's almost always worth it there. Above level 55 it costs some armour/evasion/energy shield, so judge it per piece.

What's the difference between a Verisium Remnant and an Ezomyte Remnant? They're the same thing — the in-game object is the Verisium Remnant (also tied to "Runic Remnant" encounters), but the community commonly calls them Ezomyte Remnants. Both refer to the socketed runestones you slot runes into to farm Verisium and runes.

How do you farm Verisium fast in 0.5.4? Run a Remnant in every map, always prioritise high-slot (7+) Remnants, carry cheap runes to max each recipe, stack monster density, and spec the Runes of Aldur atlas nodes. The farm scales with how many big Remnants you complete per hour.

What are the best runes in Runes of Aldur? The standout chase runes are Aldur's Legacy (a Legacy Rune made by destroying Uniques, ~30+ Divine early league), Serle's Triumph, and the Masterwork Rune. Most of the 150+ runes are common filler — the rares come mainly from megaliths in maps.

Can you remove or replace a rune in PoE2? Socketing a new rune into an occupied Augment Socket overwrites the old one, and the replaced rune is destroyed — so plan your rune placements before committing your best runes to a piece.

Should I destroy Uniques to make Aldur's Legacy? Only low-value ones. Aldur's Legacy is valuable, but sacrificing an expensive Unique to make a rune worth less than the Unique is a net loss. Check both prices on poe.ninja first.
