Best Combat Ship in Star Citizen (Alpha 4.10.1): Fighters Ranked by Role

There is no single "best combat ship" in Star Citizen — there is a best ship for your budget, your crew, and your role in Alpha 4.10.1. Ship balance shifts almost every patch, and the correct answer to "what should I fly?" changes with it. This guide ranks the strongest fighters in the current live build by role, and — the part most guides skip — tells you plainly which ones you can actually buy in-game with aUEC versus which are locked behind the real-money pledge store.

Star Citizen is still in Alpha 4.10.1 (live since 2026-09-16), and this is a no-wipe patch, so anything you earn or buy in-game carries forward for now. Just remember aUEC is test currency: CIG can wipe it at any point with no reimbursement (starcitizen.tools/AUEC), so treat an expensive aUEC fighter as a loan, not an heirloom.

Quick answer: the best combat ship in Alpha 4.10.1 by role

  • Best budget fighter (aUEC): Drake Cutlass Black or Anvil Arrow — cheap, buyable in-game, forgiving to fly.
  • Best light fighter (aUEC): Aegis Gladius — the all-round dogfighter; Aegis Sabre if you want stealth.
  • Best heavy fighter (aUEC, 2 crew): RSI Scorpius or Aegis Vanguard Warden — durable, hard-hitting, best with a gunner.
  • Best "meta" pick you can't just buy: Anvil F7A Hornet Mk II — a top medium fighter, but it's a limited ship (Overdrive Initiative unlock), not on standard sale.
  • Newest fighter (pledge-only): Kruger S-65 Stingray — the flashy 4.10 medium fighter with a transforming airframe, but real-money only for now.

The single most useful filter: if you're free-to-play-minded and grinding aUEC, ignore the F7A Mk II, the F7C-M Super Hornet Mk II, and the S-65 Stingray — none of them are buyable with in-game credits in 4.10.1. Fly a Gladius, Sabre, Scorpius, Vanguard Warden, Arrow, or Cutlass Black instead.

What makes a "combat ship" good in Star Citizen?

Four things decide whether a fighter is worth your aUEC or your pledge dollars:

  • Weapon size and count. Bigger hardpoints (S3, S4, S5) hit harder; more of them means more sustained damage. A single S5 nose gun (Vanguard) plays very differently from six small energy repeaters.
  • Crew. Single-seat fighters are self-sufficient; two-crew heavies like the Scorpius and Vanguard trade solo convenience for a manned turret and far more firepower on target when you have a friend.
  • Survivability. Shields, armor and hull decide how many mistakes you get to make. Light fighters punish errors instantly; heavies let you trade.
  • How you get it. This is the one people forget. Some of the strongest fighters are not purchasable with aUEC — they're pledge-store ships or limited event unlocks. A "best ship" you can't obtain in your current build is not the best ship for you.

Below, every price is either an in-game aUEC figure (per starcitizen.tools, which drifts every balance patch — always confirm at an in-game terminal) or an approximate pledge-store USD figure (check the RSI store directly, as CIG rotates warbond and limited pricing).

Best combat ships you can buy with aUEC

These six are buyable in-game right now, which makes them the realistic picks for most players. aUEC prices are from starcitizen.tools and shift with balance patches.

  • Aegis Gladius (light fighter, 1 crew) — the classic all-rounder. Three S3 gun mounts, 12 missiles, ~226 m/s SCM, and it's forgiving enough for newer pilots while staying competitive. In-game price is roughly 2.3M aUEC. If you buy one combat ship with credits, start here.
  • Aegis Sabre (stealth light fighter, 1 crew) — lower emissions and a slippery profile make it the pick for pilots who want to open fights on their terms. Around 4.3M aUEC in-game.
  • RSI Scorpius (heavy fighter, 1–2 crew) — eight S3 gun hardpoints plus a four-gun remote turret and 16 S2 missiles at ~230 m/s SCM. A monster with a gunner, still strong solo. Roughly 5.2M aUEC.
  • Aegis Vanguard Warden (heavy fighter, 2 crew) — long-range bruiser with an S5 nose gun, four S2 guns, a turret and 24 missiles. Tanky, best crewed. Around 7.4M aUEC — the priciest fighter on this list, and it earns it.
  • Anvil Arrow (light fighter, 1 crew) — the budget interceptor: tiny, fast, cheap at about 2M aUEC. Fragile, so it rewards good flying and punishes mistakes hard.
  • Drake Cutlass Black (multi-role, 2–3 crew) — not a pure fighter, but a superb budget do-everything gunship with four S3 pilot guns and a manned turret. About 2M aUEC, and it doubles as a light hauler.

If you're building your aUEC balance to afford one of these, the fastest paths right now are covered in our Star Citizen best trade routes guide and the Alpha 4.10.1 mining guide.

RSI Scorpius heavy fighter in combat — the two-crew heavy pick in Alpha 4.10.1

Best combat ships that are pledge-only (real money)

These are strong — sometimes the strongest in class — but you cannot buy them with aUEC in Alpha 4.10.1. If a guide tells you to "grind aUEC for an F7A," it's wrong.

  • Anvil F7A Hornet Mk II — widely considered one of the best medium fighters in the game, but it's a limited edition that's no longer on standard sale. Civilians primarily unlocked it through the Overdrive Initiative event (which ended 2024-03-15); today it's a pledge/CCU-path ship, not something you buy at an in-game terminal. Per starcitizen.tools, its in-game status is "Buy: No / Rent: No."
  • Anvil F7C-M Super Hornet Mk II — the twin-seat civilian Super Hornet. Excellent, but sold only in periodic pledge-store windows (approx. $240 USD standalone), not with aUEC.
  • Kruger S-65 Stingray — the headline new fighter from Alpha 4.10 (flight-ready since 2026-08-26). A single-seat medium fighter with a three-state transforming airframe (flight, combat, landing) and a heavy loadout: per starcitizen.tools it carries 4× S2 laser repeaters, 2× S4 repeaters and 8× S2 missiles, with a ~218 m/s SCM speed. It's a pledge-store ship (about $175 USD standalone) and is not aUEC-buyable yet, so most players are watching it, not flying it.
  • RSI Polaris — worth naming only for scale: this is a crewed corvette-class capital (6–12 crew, 28 S10 torpedoes), not a fighter. It's pledge-only and enormous — a fleet centerpiece, not a solo combat ship.

Which fighter should a new player actually pick?

If you just bought a starter package and want to fight, the honest answer is: fly what you have, then buy a Gladius or Cutlass Black with aUEC as your first real combat ship. Both are cheap, buyable in-game, and forgiving. The Gladius teaches you dogfighting; the Cutlass earns its keep hauling between fights. Save the Sabre, Scorpius and Vanguard for when you have the credits and a wingman. (If you haven't picked a starter yet, see our best starter ship guide.)

Avoid the trap of chasing the "meta" fighter you can't obtain. The F7A Mk II and S-65 Stingray look great on tier lists, but if you can't buy them in your build, they don't help you win today.

Is there a Free Fly right now to test combat ships?

No. There is no active Free Fly window as of late September 2026 — the Ship Showdown 2956 Elite 8 trial ended on 2026-09-02. The next expected free-fly period is around November 2026 alongside the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE), though CIG has not officially confirmed the dates (startstarcitizen.com; IAE is historically CIG's biggest free-fly of the year). Until then, a Game Package is required to fly, and the IAE roster is the best chance to test dozens of fighters for free before committing.

What's the current combat context in Alpha 4.10.1?

Alpha 4.10 brought the return of Siege of Orison as an instanced 4-player FPS mission, and 4.10.1 layered on the Orison Relief Support event — time-limited contracts to rebuild Orison after the Nine Tails attack. Per the 4.10.1 patch notes:

"Crusader Industries' relief initiative is now live. In the wake of the Nine Tails attack, Orison needs rebuilding and its defenses need upgrading, and Crusader is paying anyone willing to help."

Those missions are FPS-and-mission focused rather than pure dogfighting, but they're a solid way to earn aUEC and blueprints toward one of the fighters above. For the full breakdown, see our Orison Relief Support guide and the Alpha 4.10 patch notes.

A note on "buying" ships and aUEC

You will see sites offering to sell you aUEC or ready-made accounts to skip the grind for an expensive fighter. Be careful: RSI's Terms of Service (Rules of Conduct §IV–V) explicitly prohibit gathering in-game resources for outside-game sale, paid power-leveling, and selling or transferring RSI accounts or "Game credits." Penalties are at RSI's discretion and can include account termination with no compensation. The safe way to a Gladius or Scorpius is to earn the aUEC in-game — and remember that aUEC can be wiped in a future patch regardless of how you got it.

FAQ

What is the best combat ship in Star Citizen Alpha 4.10.1? There's no single winner — it depends on budget and crew. For most players the best buyable-with-aUEC combat ship is the Aegis Gladius (all-round light fighter, ~2.3M aUEC). For a two-crew heavy, the RSI Scorpius or Aegis Vanguard Warden are the strongest in-game picks. The Anvil F7A Hornet Mk II is a top medium fighter but is limited and not aUEC-buyable.

What's the best fighter I can buy with aUEC? The Gladius is the best value all-rounder. If you have more credits, the Scorpius (~5.2M) and Vanguard Warden (~7.4M) hit harder, and the Sabre (~4.3M) adds stealth. All prices are per starcitizen.tools and drift every balance patch, so confirm at an in-game ship terminal.

Can I buy the Kruger S-65 Stingray with aUEC? Not in Alpha 4.10.1. The Stingray became flight-ready with Alpha 4.10 (2026-08-26) but is a pledge-store ship (real money, about $175 USD standalone) and is listed as "Buy: No" in-game per starcitizen.tools. Watch for a future patch to add it to in-game shops.

Is the F7A Hornet Mk II still obtainable? Not through normal in-game purchase. It's a limited-edition military variant, primarily unlocked by civilians during the Overdrive Initiative event that ended on 2024-03-15. Per starcitizen.tools it's "Buy: No / Rent: No" in-game, so it's effectively a pledge/CCU-path ship now.

Do I need a crew to fly the best combat ships? No, but it helps for the heavies. The Gladius, Sabre and Arrow are single-seat. The Scorpius and Vanguard Warden are far stronger with a second player manning the turret, though both can be flown solo.

Will my aUEC-bought fighter survive a wipe? Not guaranteed. Alpha 4.10 and 4.10.1 are no-wipe patches, so in-game-acquired ships and aUEC carry forward for now. But CIG states aUEC (and things bought with it) can be wiped at any time with no reimbursement — the last full wipe was Alpha 4.8 in May 2026. Pledged (real-money) ships are account-bound and are not wiped.
