TBC Anniversary Phase 3 Tank Tier List: Best Tanks for Black Temple and Mount Hyjal (and Who Can't Main-Tank Illidan)

Phase 3 landed on TBC Anniversary realms on August 27, 2026 at 3:00 pm PDT — one day ago — and it made the tank question genuinely interesting again. One new raid is a 32-wave AoE gauntlet. The other is nine single-target progression fights, one of which quietly excludes an entire tank spec from the main-tank slot.

Every tank spec gets a tier, a one-line verdict, and the encounters that justify it — plus the boss-by-boss assignment table your raid Discord is arguing about right now.

Quick answer: For TBC Anniversary Phase 3, Protection Paladin is the S-tier tank — Mount Hyjal's 32 trash waves and Black Temple's dense trash are built for Consecration and Holy Shield, and Phase 3 is wall-to-wall demons and undead. Feral Druid is A-tier: the biggest effective health pool in the game and the best single-target threat, which makes it the default Supremus Hateful Strike soaker (29,250–30,750 damage per hit). Protection Warrior is A-tier too, and is not optional — a Feral Druid cannot reach the uncrushable cap, so Feral cannot main-tank Illidan Stormrage through Shear, and Mother Shahraz needs three tanks stacked to split Saber Lash. The correct answer for a Phase 3 roster is not "the best tank" — it is one of each, with a Prot Warrior or Prot Paladin holding the Illidan main-tank slot.

What actually changed for tanks in Phase 3?

Blizzard's own launch post frames the tier bluntly: "Illidan Stormrage has claimed the Black Temple as his fortress and is amassing an army of fel warriors in his pursuit of power. Infiltrate the Black Temple and face the Betrayer!" (news.blizzard.com). Two raids opened at once, and they pull tank value in opposite directions.

The Battle for Mount Hyjal (Caverns of Time, Tanaris) is a wave-defence raid. Four of its five bosses — Rage Winterchill, Anetheron, Kaz'rogal and Azgalor — are each preceded by eight trash waves; only Archimonde spawns with none. That is roughly 32 waves of pull-and-AoE per clear, the single biggest structural change to tank value this phase.

Black Temple (Shadowmoon Valley) runs the other way: nine mostly single-target bosses — Naj'entus, Supremus, Shade of Akama, Teron Gorefiend, Gurtogg Bloodboil, Reliquary of Souls, Mother Shahraz, the Illidari Council and Illidan Stormrage (news.blizzard.com) — several of which make specific demands on a specific tank.

Both raids are still attunement-gated at launch, so if you are not in yet, our Phase 3 attunement checklist is the faster read.

The Phase 3 tank tier list

TBC has exactly three tank specs — Protection Warrior, Protection Paladin and Feral Druid. There is no Death Knight, no fourth option, and no retail-style tank rotation to slot in. Here is where they land for Black Temple and Mount Hyjal.

TierSpecOne-line verdict
SProtection PaladinOwns Hyjal's 32 waves and BT trash; Consecration and Holy Shield scale with spell power, and almost every Phase 3 mob is a demon or undead.
AFeral Druid (Bear)Highest effective health and best single-target threat — the Hateful Strike soaker and premier off-tank, but it can never be uncrushable.
AProtection WarriorLowest ceiling on threat, highest ceiling on "do not die": Shield Wall, Last Stand, Spell Reflection and Berserker Rage make it the mandatory Illidan and Archimonde main tank.
SituationalWarlock (Illidan Phase 4 only)Not a tank spec. Many raids still use a Shadow-Resistance-geared Warlock to hold Illidan's Demon Form; a strong-DPS raid with stacked Heroism can skip Phase 4 entirely.
SituationalRogue (Reliquary Phase 1 only)Not a tank spec. A Rogue with Evasion can absorb Reliquary of Souls' Phase 1 Enrage instead of burning a tank cooldown.
Not viableEverything elseShaman, Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Monk — none exist as tanks in TBC. Do not plan a comp around them.

The S/A gap here is narrow. Every serious Phase 3 raid brings three or four tanks, and it is close to mandatory that they are not all the same class. Method's TBC tank tier list puts it plainly — "The feral druid is the best 'boss' tank in TBC" — while still concluding that "you will just never want to run a raid in TBC without a Protection Paladin" (method.gg). Both are true at once, which is why this is a roster question, not a "best tank" question.

The five bosses of the Battle for Mount Hyjal — Rage Winterchill, Anetheron, Kaz'rogal, Azgalor and Archimonde — each fronted by eight trash waves.

Why is Protection Paladin S-tier in Phase 3?

Because Phase 3 is the most trash-dense content TBC Anniversary has shipped, and no other spec is close on AoE threat.

Consecration and Holy Shield both scale with spell power, and unlike Vanilla, TBC's Consecration scales hard — which is why a Prot Paladin can hold an entire Hyjal wave while the raid AoEs it down. Warcraft Tavern's Mount Hyjal guide recommends Paladin tanks specifically for the first two encounters, including the Towering Infernals on Anetheron, and on Rage Winterchill where a Paladin tank can cleanse Frost Armor's Chilled effect (warcrafttavern.com).

The second, less-discussed reason: Exorcism. It only works on undead and demons, and Phase 3 is almost entirely undead and demons — on those targets a Prot Paladin's single-target threat closes most of the gap to a Feral.

The catch is mana. Every Paladin tanking tool costs it, and Phase 3 contains two encounters engineered to take it away:

  • Kaz'rogal (Hyjal) applies Mark of Kaz'rogal, draining 600 mana per second for 5 seconds; if the debuff drops you to zero mana, you explode for 10,213–11,287 shadow damage to yourself and everyone nearby (wowpedia.fandom.com).
  • Reliquary of Souls Phase 2 runs Aura of Desire, which reduces every player's maximum mana by 5% every 8 seconds — after 160 seconds, mana users have zero maximum mana (icy-veins.com).

That is not a reason to bench the Paladin. It is a reason to have a second tank class on the roster for those two pulls.

Is Feral Druid tanking viable in Black Temple?

Very — with one hard exclusion.

The Feral bear brings the highest effective health pool in the game (Dire Bear Form plus Thick Hide), the highest single-target threat, and the best avoidance scaling from Agility. That makes it the natural answer to Supremus, whose Hateful Strike hits "a threatening target with the highest health within melee range" for 29,250 to 30,750 damage (warcraft.wiki.gg). You want the biggest health bar in melee eating that, and that is a bear. Ferals are also gear-efficient: bear and cat share most of a set, so the same player swaps to DPS on fights that only need two tanks.

The exclusion: a Feral Druid cannot be made uncrushable. Bears have no block, so they can never fill a boss's attack table the way a shield tank can. Against a level-73 raid boss you push crushing blows off the table by reaching 102.4% combined miss + dodge + parry + block (wowwiki-archive.fandom.com). Warriors get there trivially with Shield Block, Paladins with Holy Shield's block chance; bears never get there at all. On Phase 3's hardest-hitting bosses that means back-to-back crushes and deaths no amount of healing fixes.

One more Feral trap: Reliquary of Souls' Aura of Suffering in Phase 1 reduces armor by 100% and Defense skill by 500 (icy-veins.com). Armor is the bear's whole identity, and that phase deletes it — which is why tanks alternate on Fixate rather than one player holding it.

Why does Illidan require a Protection Warrior or Protection Paladin?

This is the single most important tank fact in Phase 3, and it is the reason "Prot Warrior is B-tier" gets guilds killed.

Illidan casts Shear on his main tank, and the standard answer is not a cooldown — it is being uncrushable. Warcraft Tavern's Illidan guide instructs the main tank to "Keep Shield Block / Holy Shield up at all times & make sure you have 101.8% combined block, dodge and parry to nullify Shear" (warcrafttavern.com). (Note the number is contested across sources — 102.4% is the commonly cited raid-boss avoidance cap and 101.8% appears in Illidan-specific guides; either way, the requirement is a block-capable tank, which means Warrior or Paladin.)

The same guide sets the roster floor: at least three tanks, one a Prot Warrior or Prot Paladin, plus two high-Fire-Resistance tanks for the Flames of Azzinoth in Phase 2 — with many raids also using a Shadow-Resistance Warlock to hold Illidan's Demon Form in Phase 4, which can be skipped by raids with enough damage and stacked Heroism/Bloodlust (warcrafttavern.com).

Warriors own two other awkward slots this tier. On Reliquary of Souls Phase 2, a Prot Warrior can Spell Reflect the boss's Deaden — a debuff that increases damage taken by 100% — back at it, actively raising raid DPS (icy-veins.com). And on Archimonde, the main tank needs a Fear break that does not depend on standing next to a Tremor Totem: Berserker Rage.

If you have read a tier list that buries Prot Warrior at the bottom, it is measuring threat per second. Phase 3 measures more than that.

Which tank should take which Phase 3 boss?

This is the table to screenshot for your raid Discord. Assignments are the common Phase 3 defaults, not the only workable answer.

EncounterBest main tankWhy
Hyjal trash waves (8 per boss, 4 bosses)Prot PaladinConsecration + Holy Shield hold entire waves for raid AoE
Rage WinterchillProt PaladinCan cleanse Frost Armor's Chilled effect off the tank
AnetheronProt Paladin (+ off-tank on Towering Infernals)Add pickup on a timer, away from Vampiric Aura

AzgalorAnyStraight tank-and-spank with Doom management
ArchimondeProt WarriorBerserker Rage is a self-contained Fear break for the tank
High Warlord Naj'entusAnySingle-target tank-and-spank; Impaling Spine is a raid job, not a tank job
Shade of AkamaProt PaladinConstant add stream and kiting — AoE threat carries the fight
Teron GorefiendAnyOne tank; the Shadow of Death constructs are handled by DPS
SupremusFeral DruidHateful Strike targets the highest-health melee — bring the biggest health bar
Gurtogg BloodboilTwo tanks, rotatingTanks swap to control Acidic Wound stacks; Fel Rage removes the threat table
Reliquary of SoulsProt Warrior (+ tank rotation P1)Spell Reflect on Deaden; P1 Fixate needs alternating tanks
Mother ShahrazThree tanks stackedSaber Lash splits between the tanks stacked in front of her
Illidari CouncilMultiple tanksFour bosses, split assignments
Illidan StormrageProt Warrior or Prot PaladinShear demands a block-capable, uncrushable tank — Feral cannot fill this slot

Mother Shahraz is the fight guilds fail on gear rather than skill: three tanks must stack in front of her to split Saber Lash (icy-veins.com), and the whole raid needs Shadow Resistance. 244 SR guarantees a partial resist on every Fatal Attraction tick; 174 does it with a Priest's Prayer of Shadow Protection. That is a second gear set your tanks pay for, on top of a Fire Resistance set for Illidan Phase 2.

What does Tier 6 and epic gems change for tanks?

Both raids drop Tier 6 tokens, and the tank sets are Onslaught Armor (Warrior), Lightbringer Armor (Paladin) and Thunderheart Harness (Druid). Getting to a 4-piece is what pushes shield tanks comfortably past the avoidance cap while still holding threat gear — the whole reason a Phase 2 tank felt like they were choosing between surviving and holding aggro.

Epic gems are the other half. A Solid Empyrean Sapphire is +15 Stamina, a straight upgrade over the rare Solid Star of Elune cut most tanks are running now — and every point is multiplied again by Blessing of Kings and Bear Form. Supply is raid-gated (mined in Hyjal at 375 Mining, or rare drops in Black Temple), so week-one prices are ugly — our epic gems breakdown covers what regemming actually costs.

Add it up and Phase 3 is the most expensive tier in the game to tank: a main set, a Shadow Resistance set, a Fire Resistance set, epic gems, and raid consumables every week.

Is it worth rerolling your tank for Phase 3?

Almost certainly not. The gap between S and A here is far smaller than the gap between a geared, attuned tank and a fresh one, and Phase 3 wants three or four tanks per raid anyway. If your guild already has a Prot Paladin, you are worth more as the Feral or the Warrior than as a second Paladin.

The exception is the roster hole. If your raid has no block-capable tank, you do not have an Illidan main tank — and that is a comp problem, not a gear problem you can heal through. Nine bosses in is a bad time to find out. If you would rather not spend six weeks of progression discovering it, a Black Temple carry is the pragmatic route, and the Warglaives drop rate explains how many Illidan kills that realistically means. FAQ

What is the best tank in TBC Anniversary Phase 3? Protection Paladin is the strongest single pick because Mount Hyjal's 32 trash waves and Black Temple's dense trash reward AoE threat above everything else, and nearly every Phase 3 mob is a demon or undead. But Phase 3 raids run three to four tanks, so the real answer is one Prot Paladin, one Feral Druid and one Protection Warrior rather than three of the best class.

Can a Feral Druid main-tank Illidan Stormrage? No. Illidan's Shear is answered by being uncrushable, which requires filling the boss's attack table with miss, dodge, parry and block — and bears have no block. Your Illidan main tank has to be a Protection Warrior or Protection Paladin. Ferals are still excellent on the Flames of Azzinoth and as the off-tank elsewhere in Black Temple.

Is Protection Warrior bad in Phase 3? It has the lowest threat ceiling of the three, which is why threat-focused tier lists rank it last, but it is not optional. Warriors hold the Illidan main-tank slot, break Archimonde's Fear with Berserker Rage without a Tremor Totem, and Spell Reflect Deaden on Reliquary of Souls Phase 2. Shield Wall and Last Stand also remain the strongest hard defensives in the game.

How many tanks do you need for Black Temple and Mount Hyjal? Plan for three to four. Mother Shahraz requires three tanks stacked to split Saber Lash, Illidan needs at least three (one block-capable main tank plus two Fire Resistance tanks), and the Illidari Council splits across multiple assignments. Hyjal's wave defence is far smoother with a dedicated AoE tank on top of the boss tanks.

What resistance gear do tanks need in Phase 3? Two sets. Shadow Resistance for Mother Shahraz — 244 SR guarantees a partial resist on every Fatal Attraction tick, or 174 with a Priest's Prayer of Shadow Protection — and Fire Resistance for the two tanks handling the Flames of Azzinoth in Illidan Phase 2. Budget for both; they are the hidden cost of tanking this tier.

Does Arena Season 3 change tank rankings? Not for raiding, and it is not live yet — Season 3 begins September 1, 2026 with regional weekly resets. Phase 3 raid tank rankings are driven by Black Temple and Mount Hyjal mechanics and Tier 6, not by arena gear.

Raid contents, boss lists and Arena Season 3 timing are sourced from Blizzard's official Black Temple Now Live post. Encounter mechanics and damage values are cross-checked against Warcraft Wiki, Icy Veins, Warcraft Tavern and Method; the exact avoidance figure required to nullify Shear is contested between sources (101.8% vs 102.4%) and should be verified against your own character sheet. Zul'Aman (Phase 3.5) and Fury of the Sunwell (Phase 4) are not live and remain "Autumn 2026" estimates.
