Will TBC Anniversary Go to WotLK? What Blizzard Has Actually Said — and the Date to Watch After Zul'Aman

Short answer: nobody knows yet, because Blizzard has not said. As of October 20, 2026, there is no official announcement that the TBC Anniversary realms will move on to Wrath of the Lich King, stay on TBC permanently, or close. The last announced content is Phase 4, Fury of the Sunwell, and it still has no specific date beyond the roadmap's Autumn 2026 window.

What we do have is a track record. Blizzard has moved Classic realms from one expansion to the next several times since 2021, including the Anniversary realms themselves, and the process follows a recognisable pattern. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is rumored, lays out the three realistic outcomes, and shows the one date window worth watching after Zul'Aman opens on October 22.

TL;DR — Quick answer

  • Not confirmed. Blizzard has made no announcement about Wrath for the Anniversary realms. BlizzCon 2026 (September 12–13) revealed WoW: Forever and a retail Wrath Remix, but nothing about a Wrath Classic Anniversary.
  • Last announced content: Phase 3.5, Zul'Aman, on October 22, 2026 (Blizzard), then Phase 4, Fury of the Sunwell, listed for Autumn 2026 with no specific date (warcraft.wiki.gg).
  • Precedent says "progress": when the original TBC Classic ended, all Burning Crusade Classic servers moved to Wrath on August 30, 2022, with no TBC "era" realm left behind (warcraft.wiki.gg).
  • Precedent also says "you'll get warning": in 2022 Wrath Classic was announced on April 19, 26 days after Zul'Aman and 3 weeks before Sunwell. The same gap after October 22 lands around mid-November 2026.
  • What to do now: finish anything that has historically vanished at a Wrath pre-patch, starting with the Amani War Bear, which was removed in patch 3.0.2.

Has Blizzard confirmed WotLK for the TBC Anniversary realms?

No. Here is the full official record on where the Anniversary realms are heading:

???Wrath of the Lich King Classic Anniversary❌ Never announced

The wording that matters most is in Blizzard's TBC Anniversary launch article. It shows how Blizzard handled the last transition. Players who wanted to stay in Vanilla had to move to Classic Era before a deadline:

"After January 12, 2026, the transfer option will no longer be available, and you will not be able to transfer your Classic Anniversary characters to Classic Era realms. Any characters remaining on Classic Anniversary realms will continue to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary." — Blizzard, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition Now Live!

In other words, the default on Anniversary realms so far has been forward. No equivalent message about TBC → Wrath exists yet. Note the two precedents differ: the 2025 Anniversary transition had an opt-out window, while the 2022 TBC Classic → Wrath move had none. Blizzard has not said which model it would use.

What happened to TBC Classic the first time around?

The 2021–2022 run of TBC Classic is the closest model we have. Phase and transition dates come from warcraft.wiki.gg's Burning Crusade Classic page; the April 19, 2022 announcement and September 26 launch are from Blizzard Watch:

MilestoneOriginal TBC ClassicTBC Anniversary
Zul'Aman opensMar 24, 2022Oct 22, 2026
Wrath Classic announcedApr 19, 2022 (26 days after ZA)Not announced
Sunwell PlateauMay 10, 2022 (raid opened May 12)No date
Realms move to WrathAug 30, 2022 (pre-patch)—
Wrath launchSept 26, 2022—

Two things stand out.

1. Blizzard announced Wrath before Sunwell was even out. Players knew the next step about three weeks before the final TBC raid opened, and more than four months before their realm changed.

2. There was no "TBC Era" option. When Vanilla Classic moved to TBC in 2021, Blizzard offered a choice. Its official characters-and-realms article said players would choose "to progress to the Burning Crusade era along with the rest of the Horde and Alliance heroes on their realm, or to continue adventuring in the original WoW Classic content on all-new 'Classic Era' servers." When TBC Classic moved to Wrath in 2022, there was no such choice: every Burning Crusade Classic realm became a Wrath realm. Characters kept their levels, gold and items. Outland just stopped being the endgame.

If Blizzard repeats the 2022 pattern on Anniversary, an announcement would land roughly 26 days after October 22, so around mid-November 2026. That is not a leak or a prediction. It is the only real timeline we can measure against, and it happens to fall right after WoW: Forever launches on November 4.

Why are players worried Anniversary will stop at TBC?

Three things changed in 2026, and none of them existed in 2022.

WoW: Forever launches November 4. Blizzard's new level-60 branch is a separate game mode, not a continuation of your Anniversary realm. No transfer or copy from Anniversary into Forever has been announced, so expect a fresh start (see our WoW Forever explainer for TBC Anniversary players). But it competes for the same players. In a September r/classicwow thread asking Blizzard to clarify what happens after TBC, a couple of highly upvoted comments argued that launching Forever around the time Phase 4 should start shows Anniversary is not the priority.

A Wrath Remix is coming to retail. At BlizzCon, Blizzard closed the Midnight "What's Next" panel by teasing WoW Remix: Wrath of the Lich King for summer 2027 (warcraft.wiki.gg). That is a time-limited retail event, not Classic. In an October 19 thread about TBC as a standalone realm, one commenter, with others agreeing, read the Remix announcement as a sign that Anniversary would stay on TBC. That is speculation, not a Blizzard statement.

BlizzCon said nothing about Classic progression. Blizzard had said Classic clarity would come at BlizzCon 2026, after Black Temple. BlizzCon's Classic-adjacent news was Forever, which Blizzard says will run alongside its existing games. No Wrath Classic Anniversary, no Warlords of Draenor Classic for the Mists of Pandaria Classic realms, and no statement about what follows Sunwell.

⚠️ Rumored, not confirmed: in the same October 19 thread, one commenter referenced an older leaked roadmap image that placed a Wrath entry somewhere between Q4 2026 and Q1 2027. Blizzard has never confirmed that image. Treat any date built on it as unverified.

What are the three realistic outcomes after Sunwell?

None of these is confirmed. They are ranked by how well each matches what Blizzard has actually done before.

1. Anniversary moves on to Wrath (most consistent with precedent). Every Classic progression realm so far has kept going (Vanilla → TBC → Wrath → Cataclysm → Mists), and Anniversary itself already moved once. Expect an announcement and then a pre-patch. Whether there is an opt-out window (as in 2025) or none (as in 2022) is unknown. This is the outcome to plan around, because the realm will not wait for you.

2. TBC stays as a permanent realm (popular, but no precedent). A lot of players want a "TBC Era" realm, and commenters in the standalone-realm thread asked for TBC and Wrath Era realms. Blizzard has never kept an expansion-era realm open after a transition. It would be new policy. Possible, but don't plan around it until Blizzard says so.

3. Anniversary winds down after Sunwell (the pessimistic read). This is what players fear if Forever pulls most of the population. There is zero official signal for it. Blizzard has not announced closing a Classic progression realm before.

Whichever happens, the practical advice is the same: the content you can do today will not be "current" forever. Phase 3 + 3.5 is the window where Black Temple, Hyjal and Zul'Aman are the endgame and guilds are still raiding them.

What should you finish before Anniversary moves on?

Plan for outcome 1, because it is the one that removes things. On the original servers, the Wrath pre-patch changed what you could get, and some of it never came back.

The Amani War Bear. The Zul'Aman timed-run mount stopped being obtainable at patch 3.0.2 (October 14, 2008), the Wrath pre-patch, not at Sunwell (warcraft.wiki.gg), and players reported the same removal at the Wrath Classic pre-patch in August 2022. On Anniversary, it is available from October 22 for the rest of TBC. If a Wrath pre-patch is ever announced, that is your deadline. Our Zul'Aman loot ranking covers how the timed run and hostage chests work.

Black Temple and Hyjal while they're the endgame. Once a realm moves to Wrath, Northrend quest rewards replace much of your TBC raid gear on the way to 80. The Warglaives and Tier 6 matter now, not later. If your guild is thinning out, our Black Temple after WoW Forever breakdown shows how long a realistic raiding window lasts.

Alts at 70. In 2022, TBC Classic characters kept their levels, gold and items when the realm moved to Wrath. A 70 is a head start in any Wrath scenario, and the most useful character in a permanent-TBC one. Our what-to-finish-before-Forever checklist has the full list.

Gold. Gold carried over when TBC Classic moved to Wrath in 2022, and Wrath brings new gold sinks such as Cold Weather Flying and the new Inscription profession. Gold earned now is not wasted in any of the three outcomes.

When will Blizzard announce what happens after TBC Anniversary?

There is no announced date for any announcement. Here are the moments worth watching, in order:

  • Zul'Aman launch, October 22, 2026. Phase 3.5 patch notes and blue posts are the first place a roadmap line could appear.
  • WoW: Forever launch, November 4, 2026. With Forever's launch two weeks out, silence before this date tells you very little.
  • Mid-November 2026. This is where the 2022 timing (announcement 26 days after Zul'Aman) would land.
  • Phase 4 announcement. Whenever Blizzard dates Fury of the Sunwell, look for what that article says, or leaves out, about what comes next. Our Phase 4 Fury of the Sunwell guide tracks what's confirmed.

Until one of those produces an official line, anyone quoting a firm Wrath Anniversary date is guessing.

Should you keep playing TBC Anniversary or switch to Forever?

You don't have to choose today. Forever is a fresh level-60 realm launching November 4. Your Anniversary characters stay where they are; no transfer into Forever has been announced. The cost of leaving now is mostly time-limited content: the first weeks of Zul'Aman, the Amani War Bear while groups are easy to find, and Black Temple while guilds still raid it. For the bigger picture, read is TBC Anniversary dead now that Forever is live.

Confirmed vs. rumored at a glance

  • Confirmed (Blizzard): Zul'Aman on October 22, 2026; Fury of the Sunwell is on the Autumn 2026 roadmap with no specific date; WoW: Forever launches November 4, 2026 as a separate realm; a retail Wrath Remix is teased for summer 2027; Anniversary realms moved forward once already, with an opt-out window.
  • Precedent (fact, but not a promise): TBC Classic realms all moved to Wrath on August 30, 2022 with no TBC Era option; Wrath Classic was announced 26 days after Zul'Aman.
  • Rumored / speculation: any Wrath Anniversary date, a leaked roadmap placing Wrath in Q4 2026–Q1 2027, a permanent TBC realm, Anniversary shutting down.

FAQ

Will TBC Anniversary go to WotLK? Blizzard has not announced it. The last announced content is Phase 4, Fury of the Sunwell, which has no date yet. Precedent points toward progression: the original TBC Classic realms all moved to Wrath on August 30, 2022.

Did Blizzard announce Wrath Classic Anniversary at BlizzCon 2026? No. BlizzCon 2026 revealed WoW: Forever (launching November 4, 2026) and teased a retail WoW Remix: Wrath of the Lich King for summer 2027. That Remix is a retail event, not a Classic Anniversary realm.

Will there be a permanent TBC Era realm? Not announced. Blizzard offered a Classic Era option when Vanilla moved to TBC, but when TBC Classic moved to Wrath in 2022 there was no TBC Era realm. A permanent TBC realm would be new policy.

Will my TBC Anniversary character transfer to WoW: Forever? No transfer has been announced. Forever is a separate, fresh level-60 realm, so expect to start over.

When is Sunwell coming to TBC Anniversary? Fury of the Sunwell (Phase 4) is on the roadmap for Autumn 2026 but has no specific date as of October 20, 2026.

Will the Amani War Bear be removed? On the original servers it was removed in patch 3.0.2, the Wrath pre-patch, on October 14, 2008, and players reported the same at the Wrath Classic pre-patch in 2022. On Anniversary it is available from October 22, 2026 until TBC ends. No removal date has been announced.
