WoW Forever Best Hunter Pet for Leveling: The Fastest Tames From Level 10 to 60

Sam Okonkwo
Sam Okonkwo
Table of the fastest WoW Forever hunter pets to tame while leveling, from Durotar Tiger to Broken Tooth, with level, zone and swing speed

Quick answer: The best hunter pet for leveling in WoW Forever is the fastest-swinging beast you can reach, and that is almost always a cat. Every Forever pet attacks every 2.0 seconds by default. An innate passive that each beast brings with it restores the speed it had in Classic, and a faster swing simply means more damage. Cats also carry the top family damage bonus (+10%, tied with raptors). Tame a Savannah Cub (1.2 sec, The Barrens), a Durotar Tiger (1.3, Durotar), a Moonstalker Runt (1.3, Darkshore) or the rare The Rake (1.2, Mulgore) first. Upgrade to a Starving Mountain Lion (1.2, Hillsbrad) in your 20s, then hunt Broken Tooth (1.0, Badlands, rare, level 37) and keep it to 60. Take a boar or bear only when you want a tank.

Last verified: Nov 4, 2026, 21:50 UTC (Nov 5, 00:50 MSK), shortly before the servers opened at 23:00 UTC. Pet rules come from Blizzard's Hunter class deep dive and the November 2 development notes. Family bonuses and speed passives come from the Forever game client (build 1.60.1.70790) as decoded by ForeverChanges. Beast levels and zones are Classic data, and the speeds match what beta players saw on their tames. We flag every number that has not been seen on live servers yet.

Why does attack speed decide the best leveling pet in WoW Forever?

Because in Forever a fast pet is not just a cosmetic pick, it is a damage pick. Here is how it works in the launch build:

  • Every tamed pet swings at 2.0 seconds. That is the base speed for all 18 families.
  • The beast brings its own speed with it. Each one carries a passive from Faster Attack I to VII (or Slower Attack II and III). Datamined values land exactly on the speeds the same beasts had in Classic: 1.0, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 or 1.7 seconds. ForeverChanges counts 503 tameable beasts, and 65 of them swing faster than 2.0.
  • Hits are not bigger on slow pets. Beta players found that a 2.0-second pet does not hit harder to make up for its slower swing, so a 1.2-second cat lands about 67% more attacks than a 2.0-second wolf with no per-hit penalty. Blizzard has not said whether that is intended, so treat it as a beta finding.

Blizzard confirmed in the November 2 development notes that these speed passives are real, and it fixed the trap that came with them:

"Hunter pets should no longer lose their innate Attack Speed passives when untraining them." (Kaivax, Development Notes, Updated November 2, official forums)

During the beta, untraining a fast pet reset it to 2.0 seconds. A player saw a Starving and a Feral Mountain Lion drop from 1.2 to 2.0 that way. The launch notes say that is fixed, but check the pet's speed on its tooltip after any untrain, at least in the first week.

Which pet family is best for leveling in WoW Forever?

Each family has a fixed passive that changes its damage, armor and health compared with a beast of no family. These are the client values:

FamilyDamageArmorHealthLeveling role
Cat+10%0%-2%Best damage, most fast tames
Raptor+10%+3%-5%Damage, Savage Rend bleed
Bat, Bird of Prey, Spider, Wind Serpent+7%0%0%Damage, no known fast tames
Gorilla+2%0%+4%Thunderstomp AoE
Wolf0%+5%0%Furious Howl for groups
Hyena, Carrion Bird, Fox0%+5%0%Utility
Tallstrider0%0%+5%Dust Cloud armor cut
Crocolisk0%+10%-5%Dismember (PvP)
Boar-10%+9%+4%Tank, Charge
Bear-9%+5%+8%Tank, Swipe hits 3
Crab-5%+13%-4%Tank
Scorpid-6%+10%0%Tank, Scorpid Poison
Turtle-10%+13%0%Tank, Shell Shield

For solo questing, damage wins. Cats combine +10% damage with the biggest pool of fast beasts: in the 412 classic beasts we parsed from that list, 48 of the 62 fast ones are cats. Raptors match the damage bonus, but no raptor in our data swings faster than 2.0, so a fast cat beats them.

Take a tank pet only if you pull several mobs at once. A bear's Swipe hits 3 targets, and boars charge and root. The cost is up to 10% less pet damage on every mob you kill.

What changed for hunter pets in WoW Forever?

Blizzard lists the pet changes directly in the Hunter and Druid deep dive:

  • Pets scale with your gear. "Pets now get increased stats based on their Hunter's gear." Beta players measured the formula: 2 health per point of your Stamina, 30% of your armor, 10% of your highest attack power and all of your critical strike chance.
  • No player buffs. "Pets can no longer receive player buffs that increase their stats." A priest's Fortitude no longer lands on your cat, so your own gear is what powers it.
  • One unique ability per family. Every family learns either Bite or Claw and either Dive or Dash, plus one ability no other family has. Examples: Crocolisk Dismember cuts the target's healing received (50% in Blizzard's text, 25% on the rank 2 client tooltip), Bird of Prey (the old Owl) gets Mine!, which disarms, and Wolf Furious Howl now raises party melee attack power.
  • Foxes are a new family. Their ability, Trickster's Dance, "increases a pet's dodge chance and attack speed for 12 seconds."

Blizzard's November 3 launch preview sums it up: hunters' pets "gain definition through gear scaling and unique family abilities" (What's New and What Feels Familiar). Beta players also report that focus comes back at about 10 per second, roughly twice as fast as in Classic, and that happiness drops much more slowly. Both are player findings, not patch-note lines.

What a WoW Forever hunter pet inherits from your gear: 2 health per Stamina, 30% armor, 10% attack power, all your crit, and no player buffs

What is the best pet to tame at level 10 in each starting zone?

Your first tame should be the fastest beast close to your starting area. A beast a few levels below you still works: as in Classic, a pet earns experience and catches up to your level quickly. These are the best picks by starting zone (Classic levels and speeds, matched by the Forever client):

Starting zoneBest fast tameFamilyLevelSwing
The Barrens (Orc, Troll, Tauren)Savannah CubCat4-51.2 sec
Durotar (Orc, Troll)Durotar TigerCat7-81.3 sec
Mulgore (Tauren)The Rake (rare)Cat101.2 sec
Mulgore, backupPrairie Wolf AlphaWolf9-101.4 sec
Teldrassil (Night Elf)Nightsaber / Elder NightsaberCat5-91.4 sec
Darkshore (Night Elf, next zone)Moonstalker RuntCat10-111.3 sec
Elwynn Forest (Human)ProwlerWolf9-101.5 sec
Dun Morogh (Dwarf)No known fast tame, Ghostfang (rare, new) speed unreportedCat10?
Tirisfal Glades (Undead)Coldrasp (rare, new)Wolf121.5 sec
Zephras Isle (Skyborne)Ornery Galestrider (new)Tallstrider81.3 sec

A few notes for the newer combos:

  • Horde hunters have the best start: the Savannah Cub in the northern Barrens is a 1.2-second cat, as fast as The Rake and not a rare. It is level 4-5, so it needs a few kills to catch up with you.
  • Dwarf hunters have no fast beast in Dun Morogh in the data. Beta players found Ghostfang, a new rare blue cat near the Wetlands tunnel, but nobody reported its speed. Otherwise take a 2.0 pet and swap for a Moonstalker in Darkshore.
  • Human Hunter is one of Forever's six new race and class combos. Elwynn has no fast cat, so take a Prowler, then move to a Moonstalker in Darkshore or a Mist Howler in Ashenvale when your route allows.
  • Undead cannot be hunters in the launch race and class table, but Horde players leveling in Tirisfal can still meet Coldrasp, a Forever-added rare ghost wolf that beta players found with Furious Howl rank 1 and a 1.5-second swing.
  • Skyborne hunters start on Zephras Isle. The new Vuldren foxes there swing at 2.0 seconds, so they are a style pick, not a speed pick. The Ornery Galestrider, reported at 1.3 seconds, is the fast option. In the beta, pets tamed on Zephras Isle (the foxes and cranes) sometimes lost their abilities after a dismiss or relog. Players reported it as a bug, not a rule, so re-check your fox's spellbook after logging in.

Which fast pets should you tame from level 20 to 60?

After your first tame, upgrade whenever a faster beast appears on your route. These are the fast tames on the common leveling paths:

LevelBeastFamilyZoneSwingNote
14-20Moonstalker, Moonstalker Sire, Moonstalker MatriarchCatDarkshore1.3Alliance
15-17Savannah Patriarch, Ornery PlainstriderCat, TallstriderThe Barrens1.3Horde

30-35Young Stranglethorn Tiger, Kurzen War TigerCatStranglethorn Vale1.3
36-37Swamp JaguarCatSwamp of Sorrows1.2Knows Dash
37Broken Tooth (rare)CatBadlands1.0Fastest beast in the game
51Ravage (rare)HyenaBlasted Lands1.3
53Deathmaw (rare)WolfBurning Steppes1.2

Broken Tooth is the endgame of pet speed. It is the only 1.0-second beast in the dataset and the only "Faster Attack VII" passive. Because a pet levels with you, a Broken Tooth tamed at 37 stays your best damage pet all the way to 60. Expect heavy competition for the spawn in launch week.

One honest caveat: Forever reworked parts of the old world and added zones such as the Riverglades, Mount Hyjal and Zephras Isle. Beast speeds in those new areas are mostly unreported, and a reworked zone can move or change a classic spawn. Once you reach level 24 you can learn Beast Lore, which shows a beast's abilities before you tame it, so check the beast in game before you trade your current pet for it.

Should you level with a pet at all in WoW Forever?

Most hunters should, but Marksmanship now has a real petless option. Blizzard's deep dive lists the new talents that decide it:

  • Lone Wolf (Marksmanship, new 11-point gold medal talent): "Grants the Hunter 20% increased damage with all attacks while the Hunter has no active pet."
  • Summon Hawk (Beast Mastery, new 16-point gold medal talent): instant damage plus a Hawk that attacks your target for 18 seconds, with up to 2 Hawks at once.
  • Focused Fire (Beast Mastery, new): increases all damage you and your pet deal while your pet is active (2% at 2/2 in our launch calculator).
  • Endurance Training now also includes the old Thick Hide, so one talent gives your pet both health and armor.

A pet also tanks for you while you shoot, which is why Beast Mastery stays the safer solo leveling spec. Lone Wolf suits players who group for dungeons or who level through PvP. You can compare both paths in our Beast Mastery hunter talent build, which uses the launch trees, and plan your weapons in the Beast Mastery leveling gear planner.

Race matters too. In the October 26 racial pass Blizzard re-added the Orc racial Command, which increases hunter pet damage by 5%. That makes Orc the pet-damage race for a Horde hunter. Our racial changes guide covers the other races.

How do you teach your pet new abilities in WoW Forever?

Training works as it did in Classic:

  • Stable your main pet, then tame a beast that knows the ability. Example: the Swamp Jaguar knows Dash rank 1, and the Mist Howler knows Furious Howl rank 1.
  • Fight with it until you learn the ability. The message is a single line of yellow text with no rank in it, so it is easy to miss.
  • Teach your main pet with Beast Training. Stable your main pet before taming the teacher. Once you learn the ability, abandon the teacher, take your main pet back from the Stable Master and teach it. Each ability costs training points.

Pet trainers sell general abilities such as Growl, Great Stamina, Natural Armor and the resistances. Loyalty limits training: your pet has to gain loyalty levels first, and beta players found loyalty rises slowly. On a fast pet, check the tooltip speed after any untrain until the November 2 fix is confirmed on live servers.

FAQ

What is the best hunter pet for leveling in WoW Forever? A fast cat. Cats have the highest family damage bonus (+10%, tied with raptors) and most of the fast beasts on leveling routes. Start with a Savannah Cub, Durotar Tiger, Moonstalker Runt or The Rake, upgrade to a 1.2-second mountain lion in your 20s, then tame Broken Tooth at 37.

Do pet attack speeds matter in WoW Forever? Yes. Every pet swings at 2.0 seconds by default, and an innate passive restores the beast's Classic speed. Beta players found that slow pets do not get bigger hits in return, so a faster pet deals more damage. Blizzard confirmed the speed passives in its November 2 development notes.

Does untraining a pet remove its attack speed in WoW Forever? It did in the beta. Blizzard's November 2 notes say pets "should no longer lose their innate Attack Speed passives when untraining them." Check your pet's tooltip after an untrain to be sure.

Is the fox a good pet in WoW Forever? The fox is the new family, with Trickster's Dance (dodge and attack speed for 12 seconds). The Vuldren foxes on Zephras Isle swing at 2.0 seconds, so they deal less damage than a fast cat. Pick one for style or for the new ability.

Do pets take buffs from other players in WoW Forever? No. Blizzard changed this: pets can no longer receive player buffs that increase their stats. They scale from your own gear instead.

Where is Broken Tooth in WoW Forever? In the Badlands, as in Classic. It is a level 37 rare cat with a 1.0-second swing, the fastest in the game. Its spawn is Classic data, so confirm it in game during launch week.
