WoW Forever Beginner Guide: 15 Things New Players Need to Know on Day 1

Quick answer: WoW Forever launches November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST (23:00 UTC) and is included with any World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. As a new player: pick the Enhanced preset (quest markers and one combined bag), the Normal ruleset (no forced PvP), and agree on ruleset and faction with friends before you make a character, because you can only group inside the same pair. After that, the three things that trip up beginners most are: new spells do not auto-add to your action bars (open your spellbook after every trainer visit), there is no automatic dungeon finder (groups form through the Looking For Group listing and chat), and class training from 1 to 60 costs about 206-207 gold before you even think about a mount.

Last verified: Nov 4, 2026, 09:30 UTC, about 13 hours before launch. Sources: Blizzard's Return to Azeroth in World of Warcraft: Forever and WoW: Forever, What's New and What Feels Familiar (both published this week), plus community manager Kaivax's Development Notes, updated November 2.

WoW Forever is Blizzard's new take on original World of Warcraft: the same two continents, a level cap of 60, and a lot of new content on top. Before it had a name, players called the idea "Classic+" (we covered that rumor era in will WoW Classic+ be at BlizzCon 2026). This year's subreddits are full of first-timers asking where to start, returning players who last logged in years ago, and retail players wondering why their class feels different. This guide answers the questions in the order you'll hit them, from the login screen to your first dungeon.

1. What do you need to play WoW Forever?

You need an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. Blizzard's launch guide says access "is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time," so there's no separate box to buy. The paid editions are optional:

EditionPrice (US)What it adds for a beginner
Subscription onlymonthly subFull game, all original races and classes
Skyborne Heroic Pack$29.99Skyborne race and its Zephras Isle start, store mount, cosmetics
Skyborne Epic Pack$59.99Heroic contents plus more cosmetics and extra invites
Warcraft Forever Collection$79.99Epic contents plus Warcraft III: Reforged and Forsaken Kingdom (on sale through Jan 11, 2027)

You don't need any of the packs to have the full leveling experience. The full breakdown is in is WoW Forever free and Collector's Edition vs packs.

To install, open the Battle.net app, pick WoW: Forever under Game Version, and if you have more than one WoW account (WoW1, WoW2), choose the right one in the second dropdown. Picking the wrong account is a common cause of the WOW51900337 "valid access license" error; fixes are in our WoW Forever login errors guide.

2. When can you start playing?

Servers open November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST, which is 23:00 UTC and 00:00 CET on November 5. Blizzard has scheduled maintenance from 10:00 a.m. PST until launch, so the game is unavailable for the five hours before. Every timezone is listed in WoW Forever launch time, and if login looks stuck, check the live WoW Forever server status before you reinstall anything.

3. Classic or Enhanced preset: which should a new player pick?

The first time you log in, the game asks you to Choose Your Experience Preset, before you even pick a ruleset. Blizzard is clear that this only changes presentation: "The preset names describe defaults, not player skill."

  • Enhanced: quest points of interest and objective areas on the map, one combined bag, transmog on, strafe keys, centered UI, HD character models.
  • Classic: all of that off by default, camera-turning keys, the old screen layout, SD models.

Pick Enhanced if you're new. The quest markers alone save you hours of guessing where "east of the farm" is. You can switch later under Options, System, Preset, and you can still turn individual features on or off. A side-by-side look is in Classic vs Enhanced preset.

4. Which ruleset should a beginner choose?

There's no realm list. You pick a ruleset, and each one is its own large community:

RulesetWhat it meansBeginner fit
NormalPvP only when you choose to flagBest for first-timers
PvPOpposing players can attack you in most of the open world; one faction per accountOnly if you want the risk
RoleplayNaming and behavior rules for in-character playIf you want to roleplay
Roleplay-PvPRoleplay rules plus open-world PvPNiche
HardcoreOne death ends the characterNot at launch, "coming later"

The one rule that matters most: you can only group, join a guild, run dungeons and raid with players on the same ruleset and the same faction. Blizzard says to settle this with your friends before character creation. If you see "This faction is currently unavailable on this ruleset due to population imbalance," that's the PvP ruleset's balance system, explained in our faction unavailable guide. More detail on each option: WoW Forever servers and rulesets.

5. What race and class should you play first?

There are 56 race and class combinations, 28 per faction. New ones include Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman and Gnome Priest for the Alliance, and Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin for the Horde. The new Skyborne race (Heroic Pack or higher) can join either faction and starts on Zephras Isle for levels 1 to 12.

Retail players should read this line from Blizzard twice:

"A familiar class name is a starting point, not a guarantee of the same build or combat rhythm you use in the modern game." (Blizzard, What's New and What Feels Familiar, Nov 3, 2026)

For a first character, pick a class that can kill things alone and survive mistakes. Hunters (pets tank for you), Warlocks (pets plus drain spells) and Paladins (heavy armor and self-healing) are the usual safe picks. Our best class for solo beginners ranks all nine, and every race and class combo has the full table.

Every character also gets a two-part name, like a first name and surname. The full combination has to be unique in your region, so have a backup ready.

6. Why aren't my new spells on my action bar?

This is the number one beginner trap at launch. In the November 2 development notes Blizzard changed it so that new spells no longer add themselves to your action bars, and new bags no longer equip themselves. So when you visit your class trainer and buy a new ability, nothing appears.

Fix: press P to open your spellbook after every trainer visit and drag the new spell onto your bar. When you loot a bag, right-click it to equip it.

Class trainers sell new spells and ranks as you level, and they cost money. Blizzard's notes put the total cost of class training from 1 to 60 at 206-207 gold for every class. That's the first big gold bill in the game, and it comes before your mount.

7. When do talents unlock, and can you reset them?

Talents start at level 10. Each class has three trees, with milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points plus a new milestone at 16 points. You can reset talents at a class trainer in a major city, and Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40, so you can keep one setup for questing and another for dungeons.

Don't overthink your first points. Put them into whatever makes you kill monsters faster, and plan properly at 40. You can try builds before you spend a point with the WoW Forever talent calculator, and our talents for every class guide covers the launch trees.

8. How fast is leveling, and how do you speed it up?

Slower than retail, and that's on purpose. One player in this week's r/wow new-player thread summed it up as a slow-paced RPG, and others pointed out that the open world is the point, not something to skip. The cap is level 60, with more than 1,000 new quests across the two continents.

The free ways to level faster:

  • Rested XP. Log out in an inn or a city, or sit at a campfire, and you build bonus XP for your next session. Blizzard says sitting briefly by a campfire makes you rested and gives you the camp's buffs.
  • Quest in a group. Kill quests go much faster in pairs.
  • Keep your gear current. The WoW Forever leveling and pre-raid BiS gear tool shows the upgrades worth chasing at each level range.
  • Mix in dungeons, but not only dungeons. Blizzard cut extra dungeon-quest XP by 50% in October, then raised dungeon mob XP by about 20%. Our dungeon leveling vs questing post runs the numbers.

Starting zones will also be busier than anything in beta. Kaivax wrote that respawn rates were raised so "players aren't hitting hard bottlenecks," and will be lowered "once the initial launch surge of low-level characters has settled down." If a quest mob is camped, group up with the people waiting for it.

If you want to skip part of the climb, timesaver.gg offers WoW Forever power leveling for any range from 1 to 60.

9. What is the campfire system?

Camping is new to Forever. A basic campfire is a Cooking item from skill 1, other professions add camp features around it, and sitting or crafting at a camp for at least a minute gives you the other features' buffs. Camp buffs don't stack with the matching class buff, and on PvP rulesets a camp can attract enemy players. Our camping guide lists every buff.

It's also the social hub. In an r/classicwow advice thread this week, one experienced player's top tip for retail converts was to start conversations at campfires, buff strangers and ask for help when you need it.

10. How dangerous is the world, really?

More than retail players expect. Blizzard's own beta numbers, from the October 30 WoW Weekly:

  • 8,862,354 characters were created during beta.
  • 1,157,204 deaths came from falling.
  • The deadliest creature was the Kobold Miner, a low-level starter-zone mob.
  • The deadliest dungeon was Hall of Thanes.

The lesson: pull one monster at a time, watch for wandering mobs, and don't jump off things. Death works as it did in Classic: you run back to your body as a ghost, or accept a Spirit Healer resurrection that costs extra durability. Repair at vendors so a bad fight doesn't leave you with broken armor.

11. How do you find a dungeon group?

There is no automatic Dungeon Finder and no teleport into the instance. Forever has a Looking For Group listing tool, the same kind of board Classic uses: you post a group or browse other listings, then everyone travels to the entrance. Meeting stones don't auto-summon.

Nine new five-player dungeons run from level 13 to 60: Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron, Excavation Site, City of Dalaran, The Drowned City and Krol'dok Stronghold in the Eastern Kingdoms, and Alcaz Prison, Blackmaw Hold and Shaper's Terrace in Kalimdor. Before you go, check the WoW Forever dungeon loot tables so you know what drops. How the group tool works step by step: WoW Forever LFG tool.

12. Which professions should a beginner take?

You get two primary professions plus all three secondary ones: Cooking, First Aid and Fishing. The skill cap is 300. For a first character, two gathering professions (Herbalism, Mining or Skinning) are the simplest way to earn gold while you level, because everything you pick up sells. Cooking and First Aid are worth leveling on every character, and Cooking gives you the basic campfire. Our best professions to pick post compares the money each one makes.

13. How much gold will you need?

Gold is tight in Forever, and the big costs land at once. Rough budget from Blizzard's training figure and beta-client prices (re-check these once the live trainers are open):

CostGoldWhen
Class training, 1 to 60206-207gSpread across leveling
Apprentice Riding (includes one basic racial mount)100g (beta price)Level 40
Journeyman Riding1,000g (beta price)Level 60
Epic mount200g (beta price)Level 60

That's roughly 1,300 gold to reach 60 with riding trained, before talent resets, repairs and consumables. Beta data from Method shows that being Honored with your home faction cuts riding and racial mount prices by 10%. The full math is in WoW Forever mount cost, and the best early earners are in our gold farming guide.

If the level-40 mount bill catches you short, timesaver.gg sells WoW Forever gold on US and EU, delivered face-to-face or by mail.

14. What are Legacy Points and layers?

Legacy is an account-wide progression system. You earn Legacy Points from challenges (your first one usually comes at level 25) and spend them on perks in three trees: Adventure, Professions and Resourcefulness. Blizzard says each character can spend up to 16 points at launch, and "you can reach that spending cap on a single character; creating alternate characters isn't required." See Legacy system explained.

Layers (Blizzard calls them world instances) split busy zones into copies. If a friend in your party looks invisible, or you get a "refresh world" prompt after grouping, that's layering moving you together. Details: layering explained.

15. Do you need addons or a controller?

Neither. The base game with the Enhanced preset is enough for a first character, and Forever adds a built-in damage meter and Cooldown Manager under advanced options. If you want addons later, the common launch picks are a quest helper, bag sorting and an auction tool; our WoW Forever addons guide lists which ones have Forever versions.

Controller players are covered too. Gamepad support is in what Blizzard calls a beta state, works with XInput controllers, and still needs a keyboard for chat. Setup is in our controller guide.

Should a complete beginner play Forever or retail?

It depends what you want from your first MMO, and players split on it this week. In an r/wow thread from someone new to MMOs, some replies said retail is the friendlier start, while others argued that Forever's slower pace and bigger-feeling world are exactly what first-timers miss if they start in retail. You don't have to choose: Blizzard notes that one subscription or Game Time covers both.

Pick Forever if you want a slower, social game where reaching level 60 takes weeks and the world feels dangerous. Pick retail if you want fast leveling, automatic group queues and the newest story. Raids in Forever open on December 9, with Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia's Lair (40), so there's no rush to 60 on day one. The rest of the calendar is in our WoW Forever roadmap.

WoW Forever beginner FAQ

Is WoW Forever free with my WoW subscription? Yes. Access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. The Heroic, Epic and Collection packs are optional and mostly add the Skyborne race and cosmetics.

Is WoW Forever good for someone who has never played WoW? Yes, if you like a slower pace. Pick the Enhanced preset, the Normal ruleset and a self-sufficient class like Hunter or Warlock, and the first 20 levels teach you everything else.

Why didn't my new ability show up after I trained it? Since the November 2 build, new spells no longer auto-add to your action bars. Open the spellbook with P and drag the spell onto your bar.

Can I play with friends on a different ruleset? No. Grouping, guilds, dungeons and raids only work between characters on the same ruleset and the same faction, so agree on both before you create characters.

Is there a dungeon finder in WoW Forever? No. There's a Looking For Group listing board, but no automatic matchmaking and no teleport to the dungeon.

How long does it take to reach level 60? Blizzard hasn't published a target time. Expect it to take days of play time, not hours, for a first character, with rested XP and group questing as the main free speed-ups.
